Gwen Stefani is Elle Magazine’s July cover girl, and the excerpts from her interview are pretty funny. Long gone is the hardcore chick who could play with the big boys – Gwen seems to feel strongly that her marriage to Gavin Rossdale and her two sons, Kingston and Zuma, take ultimate precedence over anything No Doubt could offer. Gwen acknowledges that she could no longer have “that relationship with them [No Doubt bandmates] anymore.” Except that she’s on tour with No Doubt right now. Oh, well. I’m sure they’re sick of her bitching too.
As for Gavin and the kids, Gwen sounds a little harried with the whole ordeal of having a family, saying “I got married and had two human beings come out of my body — plus two albums and two clothing lines that were born during the same period. I’m still nursing! I’m a little sucked dry.” She also has a funny line about how she hopes Kingston doesn’t turn into “a freak”:
On being a mother: “It’s one thing when you have an infant, but when you have this two-or three-year-old going, ‘Mommy, what’s the deal?’ it’s harder. Kingston’s whole thing is, ‘I need, I need.’ He is insane right now. We’re just hoping for the best and that he’s not going to turn out to be a freak, but we’ll see.”
On celebrity: “Obviously, I’m not anything more than I am. I’m just, like, totally normal. The fact that any of this has happened, that we’re sitting here at the Beverly Hills Hotel just gets me going, like, What?”
On leaving No Doubt: “Everybody’s making it like there’s all this new tension, you know, like I stepped away from the band and now they’re jealous of me, and look, maybe there is a little bit of that.”
On how her priorities changed from band to family: “I wasn’t even married. Now I’m a wife and a mother of two. It’s a really different role. I always referred to No Doubt as a marriage, because that’s what it’s like to be together for so long and go through what we’ve been through. I can’t really have that relationship with them anymore. My priorities are always going to be my husband and my family now. That’s a huge, huge thing.”
On her future: “I might never be able to write another song. Who knows? I did try. So here we are, going on a tour without a new record. But, then I think, what I’ve gone through is major, right? Like maybe once I sleep through the night, maybe I’ll be able to write a song. That’s where I’m at.”
I can just imagine Gwen saying that “freak” line. In her defense, she was totally joking. If she was serious, I might say Kingston’s got a lifetime of therapy awaiting him. But he’ll probably turn out fine. Good enough for Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, in any case. You know what’s weird? My mother absolutely adores Gwen Stefani. She doesn’t listen to No Doubt, couldn’t name one song of Gwen’s, but she just thinks the world of Gwen. I think my mom just likes her because she thinks Kingston is such a little cutie. I have to admit, that cute little freak Kingston made me like Gwen more, too.

I think it’s an odd thing for a mother to say that she hopes her child doesn’t turn out to be a “freak”.
In regards to her bandmates being jealous,maybe they are,as Gwen has had huge success as a solo artist,as well as with her L.A.M.B clothing line.
However,for her to admit this in an interview,shows that she has quite the ego,and I’m sure the band will not be happy when they hear about it.
Maybe Gwen Stefani said certain things on purpose,because I get the impression this is the last tour she is going to do with the band.Doesnt even sound like they are going to do another album together.
Another thing,I think Gwen has great style,but she is in dire need of a makeover.The blonde hair,the red lipstick(which she overdraws above her natural lipline),she’s had this look since the 90’s.
I’d luv to see her as a brunette,and just to see one pic of her with her family when she is actually not wearing makeup.
As Gwen states in one of her songs “Cha ching,cha ching,I’m loaded and I’m not going to blow it…”
Yes,she cares about money,maybe a little too much.
She’s rich enough,where she would never have to do another album again,with the band,or solo.
And what is up with hubby Gavin Rossdale? The dude does not work,and hasn’t for years,several years!

How about you stop whoring him out to the paps there as your latest fashion accessory, dying and styling a kids hair like he’s 19 and dressing him by a stylist then!
I totally understand what she means about the “freak” thing. At that age, their moods can be near psychotic when they don’t get what they want NOW.
We sometimes worry what’s down the road, but often times it’s just ages and stages.
As far as Gavin, I think he was on tour promoting the album he put out last year. Oddly, I haven’t seen any recent pics of them together. No wedding band either. And she was one to wear hers.

Candi- it’s not odd for a mother of a toddler to make that sort of comment…at least the mothers I know (and I’m one of them!) When the child hits that phase all you can do is wait for it to be over and hope for the best! I’m going through it right now- it’s sh*tty.

You know, I really didn’t want to say this but…
Upon reading her interview the first time, I thought she seemed a little bit full of herself but now that I re-read it, she kind of makes sense. There’s nothing wrong with putting your family above your career.
But I have to agree that if she wants her children to grow up normal, she should stop involving them in the media until they can make the choice if they want to. Constantly showing them off can be really traumatic for young children, especially when people are generally critical…and age doesn’t protect you from that, either.
