I always thought that Cate Blanchett’s style would gracefully transition into more classic looks, moving into more “establishment” gowns from Armani and those kinds of designers. It’s sort of remarkable how wrong I was – if anything, Cate’s style is getting crazier every year. Cate wore this rather *interesting* Gucci dress to last night’s Thor: Ragnarok premiere in LA. Cate plays the villain, the first female villain in a Marvel movie, and Cate came to play. It’s actually really smart and fun – Marvel movies can be total sausage parties, and the handful of women involved are usually total bores when it comes to premiere fashion. Not Cate. Cate came to the red carpet to take all of the attention. Good for her. As for the actual dress… it’s unique! Special.
Since I can’t go five minutes this week without writing the name “Harvey Weinstein,” here you go: Cate Blanchett issued a statement about Harvey Weinstein. Cate was never billed as “the First Lady of Miramax” like Gwyneth Paltrow, but Weinstein did produce and promote many of Cate’s movies, like Carol, The Aviator (where she won an Oscar), The Talented Mr. Ripley and more. Cate doesn’t get personal, doesn’t say whether she had any knowledge of or first-hand experience with Weinstein’s perversions and predations. This is her statement:
“Any man in a position of power or authority who thinks it’s his prerogative to threaten, intimidate or sexually assault any woman he encounters or works alongside needs to be called to account. It is never easy for a woman to come forward in such situations and I wholeheartedly support those who have.”
At this point, we’re getting more boilerplate statements of support from celebrity men and women, and this is pretty much the least she could do or say in her position. I don’t judge her for that, and I don’t expect her to share what she knew or what she saw. It’s become pretty clear that Harvey’s predatory behavior knew no bounds and it’s every woman’s right to speak or not speak about what happened or didn’t happen.
I’m also including photos of Chris Hemsworth, Elsa Pataky and Tessa Thompson. Tessa’s dress is Schiaparelli Haute Couture.

As much as I’m a fan of Cate, it’s slightly rich to give a statement about this when she worked with Woody Allen and even reportedly named her son after Roman Polanski
I agree.
On Jimmy Kimmel in 2015 on her reasons for giving her kids their names, she said: ‘Roman was, I don’t know, Polanski, you know, but it’s also the French word for book.’

Umm, Kate-
Roman = novel
Livre = book.
Know your French if you’re going to toss it around.
I was just thinking the same thing. But let’s give her a chance to grow as a person. I mean we heard what Dona Karan said yesterday. That way of thinking is so backwards to many of us, but I’ll be the first to say that 10 years ago I thought the same sort of way. It took a lot of reading on my part to realize that that way of thinking is wrong. The whole, “I never saw him abuse anyone so it’s not true” thing doesn’t really work anymore. I think she needs to grow more as a person and realize that all these men who abuse are not good people and she should never work and support people like that. She needs to be, how do you you say it, woke?
Cate’s dress is very bright gold and sparkly. It’s not a look that I would choose, but let’s face it, Cate Blanchett would look good in a burlap sack, LOL! And by all accounts her villain Hela is a scene stealer in Thor: Ragnarok — I FLOVE the Antler headdress that Hela sports in the movie.
Her and Tessa seem to have coordinated in going with bright, bold colors. I love it!
The movie has been getting excellent critic reviews on social media, which makes me excited even more to see it. And by all accounts, all of the character work is being hailed, but especially Tessa and her Valkryie. I’m thrilled for her!
They did coordinate. In a red carpet interview, they said they called each other about what they were going to wear and wanted to be in the same color range. And Cate pointed out that Tessa’s mother went along with it and wore orange. They both seemed to be having lots of fun.
Tessa looks like a goddess. The dress is perfect for her.
Chris Hemsworth loves a blue suit. Looks good on him!!
I actually like the dress alot. What I don’t care for is those shoes, if they are black. If they are blue velvet shoes, I will give her points for being the crazy, rich cate lady she yearns to be.
Tessa looks pretty and I like the dress.
At first glance I thought, “ew, no Cate no,” but the more I look at it the more I like it. I bet it was really pretty in person too.
Cate is gorgeous in whatever she wears. Her face and talent are the draw. I’m actually excited to see a comic book movie.
Tessa looks gorgeous. Dress, hair, makeup look stunning on her.
I need sunglasses.
The dress reminds me of something from the 80s. I usually like her style but now and again she just misses the mark. Sad. I came to this post hoping for something to help wish the nasty off from all the HW stuff.
I love her dress. It has a subtle 1960s “exotica” vibe with the lined bell sleeves and slits on the side… The only things that are slightly off – not sure if that color gold looks great with her current hair color and I’m not 100% sure about the necklace. I think she always looks interesting and I’d love to see this dress in person.
You’re right, actresses have a choice to speak or not speak on Weinstein, or issue denials about what they knew, or a boilerplate “this is wrong” statement. The public also has the right to read these statements and feel that their words ring hollow. Especially considering that the people putting out these statements are known to put up with abuse and willingly work with abusers such as Roman Polanski, Woody Allen, David O. Russell, and more. A lot of these actresses have accepted sexism and violence against women for so long in their careers that they don’t even know when a predator is staring them right in the face. It’s sad, but sure, it is their choice and they have made millions off of that choice. So be it.
I like it. I hope Cate never stops playing with fashion. It’s one of the few things I like about her anymore. I’m really here for Tessa Thompson who looks gorgeous. I’m also glad to hear Ragnarok is getting good reviews. Can’t wait to see it.
I think that dress is gorgeous and totally works on her…until you get below the waist.
It’s like the designer started at the top, made a very interesting design, then as they worked their way down were just like…IDK? A bow sashy thing and then…
“You finish darling!”
Assistant looks up from clipboard and latte, hears “…finish…” thinks the piece is done and whisks it away.
I do like the shoes if they are, in fact, blue velvet.
She usually looks so svelte and amazing, but this gathering just smothers from top to bottom.
