John Mayer appeared on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen and said a bunch of stuff that, when taken out of context, feeds beautifully into the still-obsessed-with-Katy-Perry vibe he gives off. I’m not arguing that John isn’t still hung up on Katy, my guess would be that he probably is. But when I watched the clip from WWHL his quotes were not half as incriminating. Quirky, yes – but not creepy. In John’s defense. I think he was trying for some level of decorum in his answers. Since I don’t usually hold that opinion of him, I wanted give him credit.
During an appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen Monday, John Mayer was asked if he tuned in for the four-day YouTube live-stream Katy Perry hosted in June to promote her fifth album, Witness. “Yeah, I did,” he said. Asked to comment further, he said, “I think you’d have to watch all 96 hours to get the final verdict. That’s her thing, man—to go big and bold. Yeah, I checked in with it. It’s definitely odd to watch your ex-girlfriend asleep.”
Mayer had no qualms about admitting he checked in on the “Swish Swish” singer. “The way I see things now, I call it ‘stand in the middle of the boat.’ If someone says, ‘I don’t watch that,’ it’s like, ‘Yes, you do.’ You know? It’s like, if you want to text someone…I texted Katy happy birthday. It was 4 in the morning. It was like a post-midnight, haven’t-gone-to-sleep-yet, it’s-technically-your-birthday send. Because how weird is it to be like, ‘I want to say happy birthday now, but I’m going to wait until tomorrow afternoon?'” the rocker argued. “Be a person, man!”
In short, Mayer said, “Watch when you want to watch it. Be human about it.”
Regarding Katy’s Witness footage, John just said that he watched part of it. When Andy wanted to know what he’d thought of it, John said that he thought someone should watch all 96 hours before they judge it, not that he had done that. It almost sounded like maybe he was bored and was trying to be polite with the deflection. However, regrading his 4AM text to Katy: I’ve confessed that I expect attention on my birthday but if you wake me at 4AM to give it to me – and you aren’t holding cake when you do it – we’re going to have an issue.
John also spoke to Andy about his Twitter flirtation with Nicki Minaj (it didn’t extend past Twitter) and what he finds as Andy’s most annoying habit (his cologne). However, when the inevitable “Katy said you were her best lover, who’s yours?” question came, John once again deflected by saying he was his own best lover. Not only a deft response but possibly a very accurate one as well.
I’ll close on John’s music. I think John is a very talented musician, even though I loathe some of his songs. This article’s premise (and headline) is that it’s time to reconsider him as a musician, specifically as a member of Dead & Co and I think the author makes a pretty good argument – but I’ll let you decide.

He is disgusting. I just can’t…
She should have his number blocked. Be smart Katy.
Rockers go to bed when other people are getting up. At least it was a Happy Birthday text, which is sweet, not a horny sexting situation with dick pics sent out of the blue. He’s still a weirdo for other reasons, but not a happy birthday text to an ex he has said he still loves in past interviews and songs.
I’ve lost track of all the people he has dated.
Well, that’s the problem. He IS a talented musician, which makes it even sadder that I can’t get past his being an awful person in order to listen to it. Can’t do it, won’t do it.
He sent a happy biryhday text. Big whoop
I’m such an old fuddy-duddy but if someone texts me at 4am someone better be dead
Someone remind me why we dislike him? This whole thing makes him sound harmless?
I don’t know why but I’m inclined to think they’re perfect for each other and should just get back together.
I think so, too. He’s had many…ermmm….lovers? But he seems to really be in love with her. Which is weird. I didn’t think there was much to Katy.
I wish I could remember why he’s horrible. I like his music. I’m old now tho.
