Dina Lohan has finally come to the defense of her daughter while Lindsay is being investigated for the theft of $400,000 of jewelry from an Elle photoshoot. She says that the rumors got out of hand after the police questioned the over 20 people who were on the set at the time – including Lindsay – and that everyone unfairly jumped to the conclusion that it was Lindsay’s fault. However, it’s not as if this would be the first time Lindsay had been accused of theft. Lauren Hastings claims that Lindsay hauled off $10,000 of designer duds from her closet, and Lindsay also swiped a fur coat from a club coatroom after openly admiring it.

Dina is also angry that her daughter’s phone was hacked again, and someone posted on Twitter under her account. But, as JayBird points out, Lindsay’s phone has been hacked so many times that it’s becoming like the boy who cried wolf. Still, Dina continues to believe that her daughter is infallible.

Forget the missing London jewels for a moment: Lindsay Lohan’s mom worries her daughter has been robbed of her peace of mind.

“Last month her personal cell was posted online and now her phone messages have been hacked,” Dina Lohan tells PEOPLE. “This must stop. She is a 22-year-old girl who needs to live her life in peace. The tabloids need to leave her alone with all the lies and reporting with no proof.”

Specifically, Dina says any suggestion her daughter is involved in the theft of jewelry during a recent photo shoot for British Elle is “defamatory, false and unfair.” Lindsay is one of some 20 people at the shoot who are being questioned by police and has never been called a suspect. What’s more, “Elle made a public statement backing Lindsay,” Dina says.

Whether or not Lindsay is at fault for the theft, she can’t seem to stay away from trouble. At some point, people actually felt bad for her – she had grown up in the spotlight, she was surrounded by yes men, there was no one there (including her family) telling her right from wrong, etc. But now it’s just getting to be a little out of control. You can’t complain about the public being interested in your life when you tweet about your breakup, and you can’t be irritated that people would accuse you of stealing when you have a history of theft. Someone needs to sit mother and daughter down and explain to them that all actions have consequences.
