There’s something about the rise of an authoritarian dictatorship mimicking a banana republic that has turned Americans into book readers. Hillary Clinton released What Happened last year and she sold hundreds of thousands of hardcover copies domestically and internationally. Michael Wolff’s tabloid take on the first year of the Trump administration, Fire and Fury, has already broken 1.7 million in sales of digital and hard copies. And here’s my prediction: Michelle Obama’s memoir will be one of the biggest bestsellers of the year, if not of all time. MObama’s memoir will be called Becoming, and it’s due to hit bookshelves this coming November.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama announced the title of her hotly anticipated first memoir, Becoming, and it’s Nov. 13 release date—when it will be simultaneously published in 24 languages worldwide—in a statement to PEOPLE on Sunday. “Writing Becoming has been a deeply personal experience,” Obama says. “It has allowed me, for the very first time, the space to honestly reflect on the unexpected trajectory of my life … how a little girl from the South Side of Chicago found her voice and developed the strength to use it to empower others.”
In statement from Markus Dohle, CEO of Penguin Random House, the publisher of Obama’s upcoming book suggests that it will stretch the confines of a traditional former first-lady memoir the same way Obama’s official portrait for the Smithsonian did. “Becoming is an unusually intimate reckoning from a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations—and whose story inspires us to do the same,” the publisher said.
Obama, whose husband, former president Barack Obama is writing his presidential memoir (for an expected 2019 release), will promote Becoming on a U.S. and international book tour, the publisher said, adding that 1 million books will be donated in the Obamas’ name to the educational nonprofit program called First Book.
It will be interesting to see what kind of writer Michelle turns out to be – I think so highly of her husband’s writing style, both as a speechwriter (he wrote or cowrote many of his most memorable speeches) and as a memoirist. I suspect Michelle won’t be confessional as much as she will aim to be inspirational, like an expansive column for O Magazine. In any case, this is going to be good. Go back and look at the release date: November 13th. The midterm elections will be decided on Election Day – November 6th. My guess is that Michelle’s publisher will “ask” her to begin promoting the memoir about a month ahead of the release, and that means a book tour. A tour involving stops in many states where local politicians will need that final push ahead of the election? I see you, MO. And I like your style.

Yes! Me too 😢
Yep.
I can’t wait! I hope she comes to Dallas on her book tour so I can attend!
I have such a tug of war with my feelings for the Obamas. I wanna see them everyday and yet I don’t. Lol. It’s a reminder of our greatness and also how far we’ve fallen. These days, even when they’re giving an inspirational speech I just wanna sob.
Same. I want to know what wonderful things they are involved in, but at the same time, it breaks my heart to know they aren’t in the White House representing all Americans. Instead, we have an angry, dumb, vindictive, old man who has never really worked for any of the things he has in his life.
Please, please, please come do a forum/book signing at the JFK Library! Please! And have Caroline be the interviewer! Please!
