The Rock thanks The Razzies for recognizing Baywatch

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood. Johnson is charismatic, handsome and puts butts in seats. That does not mean that he is above the occasional bomb. Last year, Johnson’s miss was Baywatch. It was so bad, in fact, that The Razzies, who acknowledge the worst in Hollywood right before the Oscars, created a new category just for it: “So Rotten You Loved It.” In recognition of this honor, Johnson filmed an acceptance speech and posted it to his Instagram:

I love that he’s trying to turn this into a teachable moment. Bless his heart for saying maybe he’ll receive an Oscar one day. Watch the video when you get a chance, his giggling about how poorly the film was received is worth it alone.

But how have The Razzies not had a So Rotten You Loved It category before now? Egregious oversight aside, that is exactly the award Baywatch deserved. I decided to go see it with the clear understanding that it was crap. Whether it was basement-level expectations or lack of taste, I enjoyed myself. This was not a “good film,” but it was a good film for chilling with my friend after a glass of wine, quesadillas and gossiping. The movie ended up grossing $50+ million over production and marketing costs. I don’t think anyone will lose sleep over Baywatch.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, I was wholly opposed to Johnson’s remake of Jumanji and that movie was not only a blast to watch, it’s a good, cohesive movie with some unexpected plot choices.

Unfortunately, Johnson’s weekend started off poorly. Johnson posted a video thanking 911, paramedics and the ER doctors and nurses who helped him with a “scary incident” that involved his baby girl Jasmine Saturday night. He doesn’t give many details, only the important one that Jasmine is fine now:

That is so scary and yes, emergencies happen all the time. Oh, the stories some of us could share! I’m glad to hear Jasmine and her folks are okay.

Having children is scary, and it’s bern a nasty cold and flu season, hope his little girl is alright. I had my first ER yrip with my five year old late last fall. She seemed like she just had a cold and then suddenly she was incoherent and wouldn’t drink or take medicine. It turned out she had pneumonia, it was so scary

It’s so scary when it’s little ones! My 5 month old just got over a bout of bronchitis. Listening to her wheeze and hack was horrific, and getting medicine into her was almost impossible.

It’s the worst, and when they start school they catch everything. My daughter rarely ever got a cold until she started full time kindergarten, now it feels like it’s something new every few weeks.

Haven’t seen this movie, but saw clips of Priyanka (my current girl crush)……even that tiny bit was hilariously bad. I look forward to seeing the full thing.

I won’t pay big money to see these kind of movies in a theater but I will definitely watch The Rock in Baywatch when it hits Netflix. What a guy who graciously accepts a razzie

I often wonder whether a Razzie category could be bought. Like at Nickelodeon’s you can have some one off things and it smells like something a pr company bought. This Razzie “it’s so bad it’s good” sounds not like a burn at all but something pandering to the Rock.

The Rock has always been quite eloquent and I do appreciate his small video thanking the emergency crews.

His “stay calm” resonates with me too.

When I was a new mom, I got easily frazzled and it had been a very bumpy pregnancy and post-natal. One day I just snapped when someone told me to keep calm. I was, “how dare you tell me to keep calm, that’s my baby hurting over there!” My baby was hysterical like it was the end of the world.
    “You’re upsetting your baby!”

I realized that sometimes my baby did get hysterical only because mom was hysterical, and not because of whatever ailment was plaguing that tiny body.

My doula was a godsend. She helped me learn to be more patient, calmer, and accepting of help.

I’m glad little Jasmine is OK. He looks so good, esp in a suit. Will he be my baby daddy? Oh that’s right, not having kids.

I watched Baywatch on Netflix this weekend. It was completely terrible, but I am not at all ashamed to admit that I LOVED it. Perfect award for it, even if they had to make it up.

….who got the razzie for worst male lead…that was so deserved too….

Baywatch was so much fun to watch. The script was a mess, and please dont bring up Pam Anderson and Michael H. but the rest was a great popcorn movie.
