Drew Barrymore’s new musical ad for Crocs: cringe-inducing or cute?

drewcrocs
Drew “rape victims should stay positive” Barrymore has a new ad for the shoe company Crocs. Crocs announced a partnership with Drew last year, and this is on brand for her, considering that Crocs peaked 12 years ago and are associated with mediocrity and wearing pajamas as outerwear. The ad is a musical number where Drew sings about being comfortable and doing your own thing. Given her really obnoxious comments on The Late Show it comes across more as a directive than a celebration of self. It’s like Drew is ordering people to be happy and carefree lest the cracks show and they realize they’re wearing rubber shoes and hate who they’ve become. Here’s the video:

In case you can’t or don’t want to listen to this, some of the lyrics include:

Comfortable is always and forever
Because when you’re being you and you don’t care what people think
You’ll find happiness in good or bad weather
You don’t have to be a model or look a certain way
Just come as you are and do the things that you will do
Just get comfortable in your own shoes

Many people will find this cute and think that Drew is a great choice for a Crocs spokesperson. I just think she’s deluded herself into being this fake down-to-earth happy creature because she believes every non-positive emotion is invalid and wrong, no matter the circumstances. She’s like a Hollywood Duggar telling everyone with dead eyes how great life is and how they should all be just like her. Perfect to advertise Crocs.

Drew has a ton of new interviews promoting that zombie comedy that’s so bad people aren’t streaming it free on Netflix, The Santa Clarita Diet. I couldn’t tolerate even more than one episode for Timothy Olyphant and I watched five seasons of Justified. On The James Corden Show Drew talked about the fact that she lost 25 pounds to get into character and then gained it back by resuming her normal eating habits. She told a questionable anecdote about about a woman at a restaurant assuming she was pregnant. Drew supposedly responded “no I’m just fat” and walked out. Isn’t that a little angry and rude for Drew? I mean couldn’t she just smile and say “Thank you! I’m just being me and am comfortable! Check out these comfy shoes I’m wearing. I put ‘love’ in script font on the heels with highlighter around it, aren’t they cute?”

I’m not exaggerating. These are the shoes I’m referring to.

    Is she broke?

  2. annabanana says:

She’s been through so much at such a young age, maybe that’s where her outlook is coming from and that’s what helped her cope?

    • Erinn says:

There are plenty of people who had horrible upbringings who manage to not be complete dumpster fires as adults. She’s FORTY THREE. This isn’t a 20 year old going through some shit. She’s a grown ass woman with kids of her own who has no issue belittling (more than once) victims.

So since she has no sympathy for victims of assault – I am not going to have sympathy for something that happened to Drew 30 years ago.

      • annabanana says:

Are you referring to the be positive and not too angry interview? I’m sorry, but just because she or anyone else for that matter says or reacts to something you don’t agree with or find acceptable doesn’t necessarily mean they have no sympathy. We all have different outlook in life and different reactions.

      • Erinn says:

That combined with the whole “oh, I was scrappy so I didn’t have a risk of being assaulted”. She’s all about the positive thoughts unless someone tells her to put her phone down then she thinks it’s acceptable to want to punch them in the face.

Drew has made it clear that she’s not a victim based on the merit of her scrapiness. Other women who were assaulted are just not scrappy enough. And women need to just be positive, work harder and not expect things to be handed to them. Because Drew has never had anything handed to her, clearly.

When someone tells a victim of sexual assault to not be so angry – but thinks it’s appropriate to feel enough rage to want to punch someone who’s told them to put their phone down and be present there’s something MAJORLY wrong with them as a human. When physical attacks and sexual assault are something she feels okay to police reactions on – but thinks she should be able to be as outraged as she wants over being told not to be so distracted by an effing cellphone there’s something incredibly wrong.

Yes…the new “agree with my stance totally and completely (and correctly) or else” attitude is really helpful…🙁

      • annabanana says:

        Not helpful and really scary…..

I personally love drew. I always have. She’s positive yes and it can be sugary sometimes but I don’t feel like she’s an agenda person.. I’m so tired of that. She promotes when she has a show/movie, flower beauty is great makeup and I adore the Netflix show. I think it’s very different. Otherwise I’m glad she’s still around, she doesn’t take herself seriously like all the other pompous asses in hollywood

Guns need te be banned – and Crocs do too.

    • Liberty says:

….except for medical professionals on their feet all day who need a wipe-clean comfort shoe like this (a friend of ours is a surgical nurse in San Francisco who wears them for work on occasion, but who would not be caught in them otherwise).

      • EMc says:

I wore them to work for quite a few years for the same reason, Liberty. I don’t care what they looked like. I did care that my feet didn’t hurt so bad after my 14 hour shift that I didn’t have to go home any cry.

  4. Maria F. says:

to think that i had shoes like these about 10 years ago? For the beach and dog walking though…

At the end they featured the shoes more, but for the first 40 second of the ad you did not even know what it was about. Not sure that is ad money well spent.

  5. Squirrel4Ever says:

Re the “I’m just fat” comment… i work with the public and am quite shocked what people will say to you. I’m 5’10” and a size 16/18/20 (depending on the clothes!) and have been asked several times if I’m pregnant or when I’m due. Last time about a year ago, a man laid his hand on my abdomen and asked when i was due. I smiled sweetly and said “About 14 years ago. Apparently I’m just fat.” It was fun to watch him backpeddle. She wasn’t out of line. Stop asking women if they’re pregnant. The rest of it? She’s wrong. No amount of positive thinking covers harassment and assault.

    • Snowflake says:

I learned my lesson about that. I congratulated a lady on her baby, when are you due? She said he’s a few weeks old. I was so mortified. She was really nice about it but I felt terrible. I was congratulated on my pregnancy once, too bad I wasn’t! So now I don’t take any chances and dont ask unless they look like they could give birth at any moment. I gain weight in my lower and upper belly, so I guess it gives a pregnant look if I’m too heavy.

  6. Richie Aprile says:

    Drew is no longer cute.

  7. Erinn says:

They really tidied her up for that ad. When she’s left to her own devices she kind of looks like a witch. But not in a fun way. Which honestly – doesn’t say much for her makeup brand. I’d tried an eye shadow and a lipstick from it – it was a big ol’ meh at best.

Crocs are horrible for your feet. There’s not enough support for the heal with causes your toes to do the gripping which can create or worsen existing foot problems. And if you get those suckers wet, watch out. Overall, people tend to trip and fall more often wearing these hideous things.

  8. boredblond says:

She’s never moved past being the cute little actress that everyone fawned over

  9. Runcmc says:

She reminds me of the cat in cloud land from the LEGO movie. You know, hide the bad feelings where you’ll “never ever EVER find them!”

  10. Aang says:

Fuzz lined crocs are amazing for winter dog walking. Keep the feet warm and dry. And I can slip in and out of them easily to take out the trash or run out to get the mail. In the summer Birkenstocks fill the easy on off role. Comfort is key for me. If you don’t like
my shoes, don’t look at them.

  11. damejudi says:

I am all for trying to embrace the bright side/silver lining, but I think we have a problem with how to deal with anger. I was raised to never be angry, then inevitably, those feeling bubbled up and boiled over into a Hulk-like rage.

Our country is reeling from the aftermath of repeated acts of gun violence, and the dark revelations of what the culture of sexual harassment has been. Maybe it’s time to say it’s okay to be angry-and here’s how to handle/process your anger. Don’t become a bully, learn how to express how you feel with words. Don’t turn your anger into destruction of yourself or anyone else. But there is such a thing as justifiable anger.

That being said, I did have Crocs for my son when he was small. Perfect summer shoes for playgrounds and the beach!

  12. HK9 says:

While Drew annoys me, I think it’s even more annoying that someone asked her if she was pregnant. Can we agree NEVER to ask a woman that question unless you’re her doctor??

  13. BitingPanda says:

This is all taking a surprisingly sad downhill turn.

  14. Bridget says:

Drew is a prime example that cuteness does not last. No grown woman should try to be cute.

  15. Renee says:

Her show Santa Clarita Diet is terrible. I love Olyphant, but can’t even watch it for him.

    • Bridget says:

Is it her? I’m having a hard time putting my finger on what makes the show so bad.

    • Sumodo1 says:

I was appalled that Santa Clarita Diet got a second season. I only made it through the first ep of Season 1. My Wal-Mart (Houston suburbs) no longer carries her Flower makeup line. Relevance this year for Drew means Crocs and Cannibalism. Ugh. I hope she takes a long-ass vacation

  16. Rocky says:

Watched both seasons of the show this weekend and thought it was great. But then, I like my crocs too.

    • nb says:

I started watching it over the weekend too. I’m to about episode 6 of the first season. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it. It definitely made me laugh at certain parts. It’s just kind of ridiculous and silly and that’s refreshing sometimes. It’s one of those shows I can throw on in the background while I paint my nails or finish laundry and I don’t care if I miss a few parts.

    • Ange says:

I didn’t like the first three or four episodes as Drew was really awful in them. She does improve a lot though and I enjoyed the second season.

  17. Onerous says:

Wait. What? They aren’t even giving her the cute Crocs to shill? They exist – check out their whole range. I thought she’d be promoting those… but… classic Crocs? Un, nope.

  18. meh says:

“this is on brand for her, considering that Crocs peaked 12 years ago and are associated with mediocrity and wearing pajamas as outerwear”

omg this is deliciously bitchy, I love it.
