Cardi B, fiscal conservative, wants to know where her tax money is going

Cardi B poses outside of the Alexander Wang Fashion Show

Cardi B has been famous for years, but she didn’t start making big-time money until 2017. That’s when “Bodak Yellow” became a massive hit and suddenly Cardi became A-list. Remember her New York Magazine profile, where she talked about buying herself a $240K Bentley “even though she doesn’t drive,” plus she bought herself a Patek Philippe watch, but she lost it on the road. The point is, I was actually concerned about Cardi’s money management skills. Today she’s on top of the world, and tomorrow her Bentley could be repossessed, you know? But I shouldn’t have worried. Cardi pays her taxes. You can tell that she pays her taxes because she’s now in the higher tax bracket and she’s stunned to find out how much she needs to pay in taxes. This video is extremely NSFW because of language:

Cardi B, fiscal conservative? Perhaps. Or maybe she’s just like everybody else: okay with cutting a big check to the IRS just as long as you can hold on to the belief that your tax money is going to pay for, like, wounded veterans and roads without potholes. But as she says, she can’t SEE where her tax money is going:

“So you know the government is taking 40 percent of my taxes and Uncle Sam, I want to f—king know what you’re doing with my f—king tax money! When you donate, like, to a kid from a foreign country, they give you updates of what they’re doing with your donation. I want updates on my tax money! I’m from New York and the streets is always dirty, we was voted the dirtiest city in America…there’s still rats in the trains. I know you’re not spending it in the damn prison…”

Now I’m picturing Cardi in the local H&R Block office, yelling at her poor tax preparer about why the Bentley was a work expense. Perhaps it was a work expensive? You never know. It definitely feels like something is in the air: between Cynthia Nixon and Cardi B, it seems like there are a lot of women in New York especially who are ready to take it to the proverbial man.

    LOL I love this.

  2. Runcmc says:

And we KNOW they’re not spending it in the subway system- the MTA has gotten progressively worse over the years to the point where if I commute and DONT have a delay, it’s noteworthy. And we pay city and state taxes in NYC as well as federal income tax.

I’m with Cardi B. Where’s our money going? Because I look around every day and I don’t see it.

      Foreign Wars.

      It’s the same in UK.

    • holly hobby says:

It went into the pockets of millionaires (I guess she’s not among the elite yet) and to build the f—g s—y wall. Oh yeah to pay for a $31K dining room table at HUD and all those first class airfare and private jets from the crooked Cabinet.

  3. Neelyo says:

The music industry is littered with performers who didn’t save at their peak and ended up broke. I feel like she’s going down that path. Like it’s great to buy stuff for your relatives and all once you hit it big, but if it was me, I’d wait a few years at least before I splurged and bought an extravagance like a Bentley.

And her tax money is going to the $30 million military parade.

    • Jayna says:

One of my favorite bands, whose heyday was from ’83 to early ’90, said exactly that. He is the songwriter of the band, so is financially set because his songs are still used by others to this day. He has a manse in England and a home in California. He’s not hurting and is wealthy, but he’s not Bono rich nor mega touring stars. He said if he could change anything it was how much money he blew during their peak period when money was coming in hand over fist. He said in your 20s you don’t realize that isn’t going to stay like that. And their manager committed fraud on them also.

If young artists made sure to put away a certain amount, not blowing all of it on toys or hanger-ons or bad investments, they wouldn’t have to resort to some of the things you see with those like you said who are broke and live gig to gig or take demeaning gigs to make money, their glory days over.

ya….she seems semi smart and probably knows you can dip it low for only so long…she probably has a CPA.

I’m not a millionaire, but I have one.

      • Peeking in says:

Cardi has said that she has a business manager and a financial adviser. She may have blown some “mad money” at first just to blow off steam and get use to the idea of having loads of cash. She’s not stupid, she was a stripper, and was smart enough not to get involved in drugs and blow her money that way.

    • Elkie says:

At $3 million a round, no less. A large portion of which goes directly into his pocket, and probably one of the few “great deals” he’s ever made.

Although that does pale in comparison to the third of a TRILLION unaudited(!) dollars that the US military gets every year, which is more than the rest of the top ten spenders put together (including Russia & China).

      • holly hobby says:

Claw it all back when he is indicted for financial crimes. It is easier to set him up the creek on financial rather than treason. Although that’s what I would have liked for his traitorous a##.

A quick Google search will provide answers.

  6. Squirt says:

She raises a point. Does anyone know, are there itemized type lists of where the money is going? Beyond 1.3 billion for military or whatever. Detailed breakdowns? Really, how have things gotten so damn shady in this country? Laziness?

    P.s.- I really like Cardi.

  7. Jay says:

I just hope she doesn’t become one of those 1%ers (I know she’s not – but let’s say, one of those very rich people) that starts acting like they should pay less in taxes. Her points as I understand them are valid: spend money on infrastructure and things we as a society need. But rich/wealthy people not paying more in taxes is one of the many things contributing to so many problems in America. But by all means, go Cardi, keep talking about how our taxes shouldn’t fund the mass industrial complex and should be spent on infrastructure, transportation, etc! Add your influential voice!!

  8. LIONOHHHH86 says:

Does she really care about those things or does she just not want to hand over that money because she wants more for herself?

  9. Erinn says:

“When you donate, like, to a kid from a foreign country, they give you updates of what they’re doing with your donation. I want updates on my tax money!”

I mean, some of those organizations are completely bsing you with their updates. But I kind of get it.

That being said – you can google this information, can you not? Unless she means a SUPER specific list of items. I know my taxes are going to elder benefits like old age security and income supplements. Employment insurance premiums for those needing to draw unemployment. Benefits for children like child tax benefit and child care benefits. Low income and modest income families are getting GST credits – something I got pre-marriage/fresh out of college but no longer qualify for. Funding healthcare, post-secondary educations, social assistance, etc etc. It’s all broken down to different percentages – and I was just looking at the first link I clicked, but it was from 2011 or so. I’m going to guess it’s released yearly if you look for it.

This also reminded me that I had hit save on my taxes and not actually finished them yet, so thanks for the reminder Cardi.

    • Silent Star says:

Umm…Yeah, the information is out there. Just because it’s not delivered in an itemized list to your door doesn’t mean it’s not available, geez. 90% of the population would never pay attention to or understand such a list anyway.

My guess is she’s just never paid attention to how government works. Hopefully now that she’s “investing” more of her money in government she will take a greater interest and learn more and get more involved. She’d make a great activist!

I was surprised to hear she pays 40% — is that income tax? That’s like socialist levels of taxation. If Uncle Sam takes that much, the country would be better off if it went to social programs.

  10. Ayra. says:

I mean shoot, if I was paying 40% of my income, or any percent for that matter, and my city was still a mess, I’d like to know where my money is going too.
We’ve seen tax dollars be wasted on unnecessary things before. If anyone remembers the millions spent on outfits by the Pentagon, that didn’t even camouflage like it was meant to.

  11. Justme says:

She can find out with a quick Google search. https://www.cbpp.org/research/federal-budget/policy-basics-where-do-our-federal-tax-dollars-go
Only 16% goes to Defense. Most goes to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, other Safety net programs and interest on debt. NYC collects its own taxes and those should be going to the subway etc. I’m always amazed by people who don’t realize that the Federal govt. is not the ONLY government. States and cities are responsible for different things than the Feds (Education for instance is funded almost entirely locally.)

  12. HK9 says:

It’s always good to know where you tax dollars go-it keeps everyone in line! And if she’s gonna be checking people out, that should also include what her man is doing in his spare time since things are getting messy on that front.

  13. NeoCleo says:

If she is paying 40% of her income in taxes, then she’s got a VERY bad CPA. One of my biggest complaints about our tax system is the fact that the very wealthy ultimately pay a much lower percentage of their income in tax than the middle and lower classes. So, either she is not very money savvy or someone is giving her bad advice.

  14. Christina S. says:

Billions of it goes to the military and you guessed it more guns. Smh. I wish we got a say in what our taxes pay.

    • holly hobby says:

You do have a say if your elected pol actually represented you instead of the big money interests. However, we know some of these jerks are the NRA’s and Banks’ lap dogs. Vote them out.

    • Justme says:

As I said above 16% goes to Defense. Most of the rest goes to social Security, Medicare, Medicaid etc. and of course interest on the National Debt. Do you think we don’t need Defense? We do have enemies and they spend plenty on defense. We are not angels you know. And neither are our enemies.

    • Nick2 says:

Please remember that not all of the money the military receives goes to war. The military is comprised of people, most have families. Funds are used for schools both on US bases and overseas bases, military hospitals, pensions and salaries (for both civilians and personnel), healthcare for dependents and retired military (spouses continue to receive military healthcare benefits even after the former military member dies) and so much more. I get where people are coming from when they get mad about military spending but they forget that there are over 2 million people serving in our military and slashing funding would screw a lot of people.

  15. shockedandappalled says:

I frankly dislike the anti-tax, essentially anti-government rhetoric.

Government pays for ALL KINDS of everyday things we rely on. The list includes but is not limited to:
    – Roads/highways, public transportation
    – public schools/universities,
    – medical research and development, other types of scientific research,
    – all sorts of law enforcement including labour laws/workplace safety, banking/financial regulations, environmental (pollution) laws, air travel safety, car safety, product safety, gun control, food and drug safety, water quality,
    – firefighting, ambulance, police/law enforcement, courts/jails,
    – disaster response,
    – in many countries medical care – in the US it is Medicare and Medicaid and certain prescription drug programs,
    – And yes, the diplomatic service and military.
    ETC, ETC, ETC.

You can quibble over what taxes pay for, and how well it is done. To me, it is shameful how much the US spends on the military, nuclear weapons, and foreign wars and does not provide public healthcare/medications, better public schools/universities, etc. But have n doubt, government does a lot.

As someone who used to work for a consumer advocacy organization, I can say for sure that it was in fact a long-term corporate campaign to convince people that taxes, debt and government regulation and spending is bad and wasteful that has led to these types of attitudes. And we are all suffering for it.

And, yeah, the wealthiest pay a lot in terms of dollar amounts in taxes. That is as it should be. To whom much is given, much is expected. And the rich tend to be really good at avoiding taxes, and the middle and lower classes don’t get the same tax breaks, plus the tax hit is felt the most with them. Cry me a river Cardi B about your tax bill. Suck it up. You’re in the top 1% now, pay your fair share.

    • justme says:

Yes of course. However why is it shameful that the United States spends 16% of its budget on defense? Defending its people is the first duty of all governments ( – see “establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity -preamble of the Constitution.)

Do people really think we need no defense? And don’t give me European countries who don’t spend much on their defense. The US is their backup defense and has been since WWII.

It would be lovely if all humankind could live together in a love feast, but it is an unlikely prospect. So we need to defend ourselves, or all your other government programs are for nothing.

    • Sunny says:

I pay taxes willingly. But Cardi B has a great point. NY state is a “donor state”. So NY state residents as a whole, and likely mostly NYC residents pay out Waaaay more to Uncle Sam than they get back. A 53 Billion shortfall as a matter of fact. New York residents pay out 250 billion in federal income tax and only get 197 billion in federal money. That 53 billion goes to Alaska, Alabama, Montana, South Dakota and other “recipient states” who have the better highways and infrastructure and deride donor states like NY and CA and HI. For example CA gets less money back from the Feds for our state infrastructure that needs repair. We have to institute local bond measures ( more taxes) to pay for repair while our money is going to republican states. West coast and New England states pay much more in income tax than they receive. It’s bullshit. Yes I know those who have it should pay more but the shit of it is those recipients states don’t even admit what we pay for In their state. They vote republican and act like they’re intrinsically better while sucking money from democratic states. Those recipient states (welfare states imho) are mostly republican states with low income and therefore they pay much less income taxes.
