There has been a lot of recent discussion about which stars can still open a movie. It seems like studios are relying on franchises/genres rather than actors for a film’s success. So, where have all the “movie stars” gone? There’s at least one still on the theaters – Dwayne The Rock Johnson. Dwayne’s latest offering is Rampage, a huge action film based on the 1986 arcade game. The film was not expected to do well because of the Video Game Movie Curse plus most critics don’t like it. Then how did it end up ranking #1 at the box office, overtaking Certified Fresh A Quiet Place? Variety argues it’s all because of The Rock.
After back and forth projections showed “Rampage” wrestling with “A Quiet Place” to see who would come out on top at the box office last weekend, there is one main reason the video game adaptation secured the crown: Dwayne Johnson.
“It’s good old star power at work here,” box office analyst Jeff Bock said. “There’s not that many people in this day and age who can pull this off.”
Did Johnson break the video game adaptation curse? Probably not. Did his sheer star power push “Rampage” to the No. 1 spot at the worldwide box office? It seems likely.
“Rampage” bowed with $34.5 million in North America, along with an impressive $114 million overseas for a global total of $148.6 million. In China alone, the sci-fi fantasy made $55 million.
“If it’s anybody else in this film, it would tank. It would be lucky to get to $20 million if Dwayne Johnson wasn’t in in,” Bock said. “It gives you an idea of his power at the box office.”
It’s been a while since a tried and true movie star’s name has landed a movie alone. “That used to be reserved for Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone,” Bock said.
That’s where Johnson steps in.
“He’s a global draw unlike anybody else today,” Jeff Goldstein, head of domestic distribution at Warner Bros., said.
Johnson’s massive overseas following definitely plays a big part in the global success of his films.
“Domestic is important, but not as important as it once was,” Bock said. “That number out of China is outstanding. $55 million? You combine Dwayne Johnson and giant monsters — that’s exactly why the film was greenlit, for China.”
Who could get you to go to a theater? The article cites other actors like Leonardo Di Caprio, Melissa McCarthy and Robert Downey, Jr. as people who can open a movie but I’m not sure even they can. Obviously, as the article said, this movie’s success was relying on the overseas market – and they got it. But something Jeff Bock said in the article is that part of the reason we still flock to The Rock’s movies is because, “He owns every good movie and every bad movie. Audiences like that.” I think that’s a big part of it. He is wholly committed to entertaining us and in turn, gives us permission to be entertained by some really base stuff.
Can you imagine what it will mean for Dwayne’s asking price is he’s the last Movie Star standing? And this is very important, to me at least, because the article closes with a quote from Bock in which he said about Dwayne, “He could easily win the presidency as well. That’s easy. Being a true blockbuster movie star, that’s difficult.” I think Bock was joking but we can all see the underlying truth there. So let’s hope Dwayne’s not willing to take the pay cut if he did take the job.
The photos are from the film’s London premiere. Here are DJ, Naomie Harris, Malin Akerman and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. I love Naomie’s pants but nothing else really does anything for me.

I’m taking my kiddos to see it Friday since it’s a PA day. My youngest loves “the Jumanji guy.” I love me some Dwayne!
Jeffrey Dean Morgan. You do whatever you want (no spoilers here) to Neegan, but leave Jeffrey alone. He’s getting better looking with time. I imagine you guys that hate Norman Reedus aren’t a fan of Jeffrey’s looks either, so I will just take him. My husband says it’s ok.
AGREEEEE!!! Also I’d like to think he has something to do with the movie success people love JDM.
Robert Downey Jr???
Only as Iron Man.
Nobody else could be Iron Man but RDJ.
But that doesn’t make him a bankable movie star, anymore than Chris Hemsworth or the rest of them.
It just makes him a good Iron Man.
But if Iron Man would’ve been a flop, we wouldn’t have had the MCU as it is today. It set the tone to the whole thing so it’s not something to write off.
Before he only did Marvel movies back to back, he also had BO success with the Sherlock Holmes movies and Due Date. They did well in the foreign markets without the push of the Chinese BO (the Sherlock Holmes movies made a billion combined or something). It was before the time a movie could make it or break it solely with the help of China. So he was bankable outside Marvel. The only other movie he did in recent times outside Marvel was The Judge, but it’s not like that movie would have ever attracted huge crowds.
I guess it really doesn’t matter if you have acting skills or not.
Lol. Exactky. He doesn’t do anything for me. In fact, I think this good guy image he’s cultivated so well is fake. It’s all about his brand. Kevin Hart is the same.
Let’s not forget that he attended the Republican presidential convention in 2000.
In all fairness, one doesn’t go to his movies for the acting skills.
Unfortunately. The Rock has never done much for me. Appearance wise or acting wise. But neither did Vin, Stallone, Arnold or Willis…
I love Dwayne! If I ever hear anything bad about it, it will break my heart…so don’t tell me! 😛
He reminds me a bit of Tom Cruise (minus the occasional awards bait).
I’ve always felt I can go see any Tom Cruise movie, and it might not be great or even particularly good, but it will be perfectly watchable, partly because Cruise never phones it in. There’s just an energy there that makes even stupid films or boring films feel decently entertaining in the moment.
I won’t rush out to see a Cruise film, or a Johnson film, but when I want to see something and nothing’s jumping out, they can get me consider films I’d usually disregard entirely.
@Jussie
Very good comparison! I finally got around to seeing “Edge of tomorrow” I think it was called and it was excellent and in large part because of Cruise. I wouldn’t necessarily want to see a Tom Cruise movie but I always enjoy it when I do!
Johnson has the advantage of not making me adverse to his movies because of his personal life. His smile, charm, and humor makes him a draw because I like WHO he is.
This just makes me sad for the movie industry tbh.
I think it also has to do with his social media presence. On IG he’s got millions of followers from all over the world and he knows exactly what he’s doing. I follow him and I remember seeing that he won some social media awards as well.
Those are some RDJ booties on Jeffrey.
I adore him but, my goodness, it seems like he’s been everywhere the last couple years. Am I the only one feeling some over saturation despite him only being in a couple movies per year? He’s popped up seemingly every week with a new film announced–There are twelve upcoming on his IMDb page. Jumanji 2, San Andreas 2, Suicide Squad 2, a movie based on the Jungle Cruise ride, a Fast and Furious spin-off, etc etc etc. Sometimes less is more.
No, you’re not the only one, Evie. Dude with the fake smile is everyehere.
I can’t say I blame him; his last movie (Baywatch) tanked. So if I were him, I’d take everything right now and get as much cash as possible. That was a rare miss for him, but it could be a sign of oversaturation and weariness.
Oh I agree. Less is more. At this point its all about quantity and not quality.
He can’t be the last bankable star…just can’t..
I guess I’m in the minority – Not a Rock fan. Not a Dwayne Johnson fan. I find him annoying and fake.
He also works harder at getting the fans to come in than any other actor because he shows how much he appreciates them. His IG is all about working out, doing work, fans and his family. I think he and his ex wife have created the right formula that keeps him in the public eye and in the right light.
