I fear we are soon going to live in a world where all movie titles include “2” or “3.” Yes, we are rapidly approaching sequel overload, but this news is sure to make some fans of a beloved YA franchise very happy.
On Thursday night’s Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, we discovered what a fawning fangirl Jimmy could be as he gushed over guest Alexis Bledel’s work on Gilmore Girls and in the 2005 movie Sisters of the Traveling Pants. When Jimmy brought up the possibility of a third movie, asking, “Can there be another one?” Alexis replied, “I really hope so. I would love it. It would be the best thing.” She went on to say that a script for a follow up to the original movie and its 2008 sequel has been pitched to the studio.
Alexis wasn’t the only “sister” to talk about the proposed film. Amber Tamblyn took to Twitter with news about the movie that was “not enough to break the internet, but certainly could crack it.“ She later shared, “Alexis is right. We’ve been pitching and there is a script. A good one. It’s up to a studio now to make the film. So far, no luck. So keep your fingers crossed, or, knock down their doors with jeans emojis.”
Sorry for that delay, my daughter needed me. Where was I? Oh yes. Alexis is right. We’ve been pitching and there is a script. A good one. It’s up to a studio now to make the film. So far, no luck. So keep your fingers crossed, or, knock down their doors with jeans emojis.

Last but not least, Blake Lively talked SoTP 3 with Entertainment Tonight at CinemaCon last Thursday, saying of the new move that, ”I think it could really happen.” She went on to add that, “I think that people who love the movie want to see it. So, I mean, fans have gotten bigger movies made.” She cited hubby Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool as a film made “thanks to the fans” and asserted, “So I’m saying we’ll do it.”
Ryan took a playful jab at his wife’s movie in a recent trailer for Deadpool 2, uttering the line, “Doing the right thing is messy, but if you want to fight for what’s right, sometimes you have to fight dirty, and that’s why ‘Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants’ is straight-up pornography.”
If this third movie does happen, it will have been a long time coming. Back in 2014, Variety reported that a third film was in the works, claiming the script would come from author Ann Brashares’ fifth and final novel in the Traveling Pants series, Sisterhood Everlasting. The film would check in with the four friends – Amber, Alexis, Blake and America Ferrera – who were the center of the first two films in their 30s, reuniting after losing touch over the years. Ken Kwapis, who directed the first film (but not the second), was set to direct and the screenplay was to be drafted by Dawson’s Creek’s Liz Garcia.
In sequel world, I don’t mind this news. If they could incorporate Deadpool into the proceedings, I’d definitely buy a ticket for this new film.

Meh about that movie somehow. But, I love her work from GG to Mad Men, so I would buy a ticket.
To me she was a revelation in Handmaid’s Tale.
I’d prefer this then another season of GG. There’s a story to check in on here. If they all should live to have long careers I hope this franchise goes into their golden years
I’d see it.
Me too. I read the first 3-4 books when I was in college and really enjoyed them. And I’m a ways down for girl friendship movies.
I’d watch this if/when it gets released, just not on the big screen.
I love the two other sisterhood movies so even though I would feel really old going to see a YA film now, I’d totally be into this!
The fifth book which people overwhelmingly hated? Sure why not?
And considering I can barely stand Amber at this point Its a no from me.
What about Amber don’t you like? I feel like I may have missed something.
@gameofscones there are many reasons to dislike Amber but the most recent would be her response to Asia Argento and Thandie Newton saying they felt excluded from the #metoo movement
^^this
Thanks, it’s so hard to keep up with who’s done or said something shitty/racist/misogynist lately.
*no sarcasm intended
No I feel you
Could be good. Alexis looks like there’s no life left in her tho.
Yaaay!
But the third book is kinda sad though.
Ain’t nobody even fit in them damn traveling pants anymore though! Lol
But seriously, no.
I only saw Alexis Biedel interviewed one other time with the cast about the more recent GG (which I thought Biedel as Rory and Graham as Lorelai seemed uncomfortable in the roles or else it was the writing/plot – I too only recently binge watched the original and really liked it). She seems uncomfortable both times being interviewed .. I wonder why that is. Most ‘stars’ who start out young, they always seem so confident. Here Kimmel is so happy about everything she is doing but it almost embarrasses her. I have not seen Handmaid’s Tale but I am glad she is doing well and so acclaimed. Maybe it should be refreshing that she is not so uber polished.. I guess somewhere in the middle would be good.
She has always been a little shy and awkward. And modest, which is refreshing given the regular onslaught from gargantuan celebrity egos.
Do you mean fallon?
I freaking LOVED these books. I remember buying the third one while camping with my family back in 2006 (yeah, kinda dumb to start with the third one, but that’s 11-year-old me for you guys) and I went on to read the other three and I would frequently re-read them during the summers in the following years. It kinda felt like I was growing up with these characters.
And then the fifth book came out when I was graduating high school. It broke my heart, but I loved it anyway (someone here said it was hated by a lot of people? I’d be down to watch a movie based on the final book in a heartbeat!
The first came out when I was in highschool and I watched it with all my friends. I would totally be down for a 3rd for nostalgic reasons.
I’m in! For sure.
I never read the books and kinda hate watched the movies even though I think it was a bit too young for me when they came out (I am 28 now and had a friend who wasn’t allowed to watch M movies hhaha) but I would totally watch #3. Probably a girls trip to the cinema!
