Let’s soothe ourselves with the glorious, giant hats of Royal Ascot

Royal Ascot 2018 - Day 1

The royals have come out for Royal Ascot today, and we’ll have those photos in a separate post. I was looking through the photos of just the regular-person attendees though, and I was enchanted by all the hats. Royal Ascot tends to come at a lazy time for celebrity gossip, so maybe we should just sit back and soothe ourselves with fantastic hats? I’m game. We’ll start with the header image: lovely black ladies in red and coral, with hats. These ladies were really working the sh-t out of their Royal Ascot looks too. I love it.

This one is a huge NOPE.

Royal Ascot 2018 - Day 1

I actually love this hat/flower fascinator thing. I wish I had the face to pull this off, because I would love to wear a giant-ass flower on my head all the time.

Royal Ascot 2018 - Day 1

This looks like it was made of real flowers on some kind of vine or branch? It’s pretty cool, and I could totally see this being a bridal look too.

Royal Ascot 2018 - Day 1

This reminds me of My Fair Lady and how I haven’t watched My Fair Lady in years. I need to watch it again.

Royal Ascot 2018 - Day 1

Lord help me, I love this hat too. Yes, I would wear a giant pink flower on my head too.

Royal Ascot 2018 - Day 1

This is one I do not enjoy. I feel like this is some kind of political statement, or maybe I’ve just written the word “cage” too many times in the past 72 hours.

Royal Ascot 2018 - Day 1

Coordinated lady hats and dresses! I feel like this is vaguely Pride Month-ish.

Royal Ascot 2018 - Day 1

More coordinated looks! I’m fascinated by this – you decide to go to Royal Ascot as a group, and then you decide to all coordinate your looks based on pastels? Is that how it works?

This was a good little chuckle after reading the Trump posts. It almost made me forget the horribleness going on in my southern neighbors country.

    • OriginalLala says:

we need something like this in Canada – I could use an excuse to wear a frothy dress and a giant flower on my head while I drink profusely

      • DM2 says:

There’s the Queen’s Plate coming up on the 30th…giant hats and dresses galore!

      • sass says:

Princess Eugenie has been serving looks and it will be fun to discuss her pre wedding looks.

  2. Becks1 says:

Those hats are fun. Even the ones I don’t like I still think – “oh she went all out, good for her” lol. I wonder how heavy some of them are?

    • AnnaKist says:

Same here, Becks1. I assume the hats are made of very light fabrics, but the weight adds up when you consider the amount of fabric, the (usually) wire armature and all the embellishments. I don’t have the face for hats at all, but even if this were not the case, can see myself constantly adjusting the hat, re-balancing, over balancing, until it or I or both, fell, terribly unladylike, into a puddle of mud.

I love those co-ordinated ladies – all of them. The Pastels must be special; they have name tags, whereas The Rainbows don’t. I wonder what that’s about? They really do look like fun, and I’d also love one of those giant flowers on my head! Siiiigh…

I wish I had the face of that white lady in red too. She’s gorgeous.

I’ve never been much of a hat fan, but the idea is starting to grow on me. This was a fun post.

    • Josephine says:

I like hats on men, too. My grandfather always wore a hat and he looked so handsome in them. I would love to see the return of hats, but they often require a more formal way of dressing, and I can’t see us returning to that.

I find it interesting that I love several of the hats but almost universally hate the dresses.

  5. Jess says:

Needed this! Love all the groups of ladies in complementary hats and outfits.

  6. Laura says:

Yes!! Thank you for this post and I would happily look at dozens of other crazy hat pictures.

(I’d also wear any of the flower hats. I love them!!)

  7. Lightpurple says:

This was fun! And that glorious giant lily hat is gorgeous as is the woman wearing it

  8. Contessa says:

Love the My Fair Lady hat!

  9. minx says:

I’m not a hat person but this was wonderful!

  10. Snazzy says:

I need a life where I can go out in such glorious hats.

  11. Little Red says:

I love hats and wish I had a life where I had opportunities to wear such glorious ones on a regular basis.

    • Other Renee says:

Little Red, I agree! I wish hats were a “thing” where I live. I’m in southern CA so the only hats you see people wear are baseball caps to shield them from the sun.

These hats are fantastic and fun. And all the ladies look lovely. Better than all the drunken tacky women passed out on the lawn that the DM publishes regularly. I don’t know if that is from Ascot or some other race.

  12. HelloSunshine says:

I need an excuse, any excuse, to wear a hat like this! I can only hope I look this fabulous and confident doing so lol

  13. Hazel says:

That giant hat with the plumage! Yes, I’ll take that

  14. Ladykeller says:

Wipes away tears after reading after about Nazi America and their kiddie internment camps. Ooh, look at the pretty hats.

And back to the crying and rage.

  15. JennyJenny says:

I once went to the Kentucky Derby.
And choosing the hat and wearing it was more fun than I can even describe!
These photos are such a palate cleanser after the Trump stories…

  16. Green Is Good says:

The woman in the third photo wearing the fascinator: cheekbones for miles! So jealous!❤️

  17. Harryg says:

    Fun! Like marshmallow and frosting!

  18. DebbieDoo says:

I saw a picture of the ladies in the stripy skirts on Twitter and understand they are an ensemble called the Tootsie Rollers jazz band.

I agree with everybody else, after the sheer bang my head against the wall horror of what’s happening in America this week** a post about big hats is just the ticket

**Can’t criticise too much as I’m from the UK and some of what’s going on here doesn’t exactly cover us in glory 🙁

  19. Katebush says:

I love the My Fair Lady hat and the giant orchid hat soo much fun!

  20. Eden75 says:

I love hats and I need the My Fair Lady hat in my life. It’ll fit with the rest of them, no one will notice a new one….
