Duchess Meghan & Serena Williams attended Prince Harry’s polo game

Saturday was the first day of pre-tournament interviews at Wimbledon. Serena Williams, who has won the singles title at Wimbledon seven times, was scheduled to sit down for a 10-15 minute press availability. She canceled at the last minute. As it turns out, Serena was invited to go to Ascot, England to watch a polo match with her friend the Duchess of Sussex. Yes, peeps, this is really happening. This isn’t a dream that I’m having about how cool it would be if royal gossip joined with tennis gossip to create the best gossip story in the world. The only thing that would make this story better is if Prince Harry’s polo pony pooped on Maria Sharapova.

Of course we knew that Meghan and Serena were and are friends. Meghan has been a high-profile guest at Serena’s matches before at the US Open and Wimbledon. I have high hopes that Meghan attends some of Serena’s matches this Wimbledon fortnight too. And Serena obviously attended Meghan’s wedding – Serena actually skipped the tournament in Rome to attend Meg’s wedding. And now, Serena is putting her own tennis obligations aside for a few hours to support her friend’s new husband during his polo match. Alexis Ohanian was there too. You can see the photos at the link:

Fashion note: Meghan’s breezy summer dress in those photos is by Shoshanna. It retails for about $350, but it’s sold out now, apparently. I don’t know what designer Serena is wearing in those photos, but I feel pretty confident saying that Serena doesn’t know how to dress for a summer polo match. A high-neck black dress and a jacket? No. But I hope Serena had fun. And I hope she buckles down and goes far at Wimbledon!

“The only thing that would make this story better is if Prince Harry’s polo pony pooped on Maria Sharapova.” hahahahahaha *deep breath* hahahahahaha

  2. Millennial says:

The Polo outfit does Harry a lot of favors, is all I’ve got to say.

    • CommentingBunny says:

Yeah, what is is about polo that makes every man playing look swoon-worthy? Even William looks hot playing polo!

    • Bella DuPont says:

      @ Millenial

It does, doesn’t it? All that oiled leather……he looks positively yum! 😀😋

(Harry, not Will, sorry CommentingBunny. Will is unsalvageable 😁)

    • Harla says:

Harry has definitely gotten better looking as he’s gotten older!!!

      • minx says:

He still married up, as far as looks go.

      • Bella Dupont says:

        @ Minx

Ha! There was ZERO possibility of him marrying down looks wise. Can you just imagine the absolute uproar that would have caused?

      • minx says:

Bella, right? He’s very fortunate to have gotten such a beautiful, smart wife.

    • Lilly says:

The first two comments are fire today.

  3. Melania says:

I love a good friendship! Meghan’s dress was great.

    • Bella DuPont says:

      Yup.

I absolutely *adore* how effortless, relaxed and accessible Meghan looks here. I was getting really fed up of the hyper expensive, yet ill fitting, nouveau riche looks from the last few weeks.

      Long may this continue! 👍😘

      • Jessica says:

You must be the Queen of backhanded compliments.

      • minx says:

How is that a backhanded compliment? Sounds pretty straightforward.

      • Bella Dupont says:

Backhanded compliment?! lol…..its not meant like that at all. This is the ONE single thing I’ve complained (consistently) about Meghan because it’s a major achilles heel for her. I love everything else about her.

Should I be hiding my discomfort a bit more?

      • Jessica says:

        Pretty obvious

Correspondingly, a backhanded (or left-handed) compliment, or asteism, is an insult that is disguised as, or accompanied by, a compliment, especially in situations where the belittling or condescension is intentional.

      • minx says:

Yes, I understand the term. I’m saying, I don’t think there was anything in the comment that was backhanded.

      • Bella Dupont says:

        @ Jessica

Yeah……you’re entitled to think what you want. But as the Author of the comment, I can confirm that it was NOT meant as an insult – more a balanced appreciation of the evolution of her fashion choices.

If I had intended to deliver an insult, believe me, there would be nothing back-handed about it.

        😉

      • Jessica says:

        Pretty simple. You insulted her…

I was getting really fed up of the hyper expensive, yet ill fitting, nouveau riche looks from the last few weeks.

But prefixed it with a compliment.

      • minx says:

What comment did I make where I insulted her?

      • Bella Dupont says:

You can take the comment however you like, Jessica, it’s a free world. 😉

    • minx says:

      Very cute, head to toe.

    • Lilly says:

Okay, first three comments are spot on. Clearly when she doesn’t have to do an official occasion her clothing choices are better. That’s why I haven’t hated her dresses so far, they’re right for the occasion, but not as great as her pre-wedding fashion

      • Dazeem, Adele says:

Check out her skinny jeans and white shirt combo for today…that is the old Meghan fashion we love!

    • still_sarah says:

@ Melania : “I love a good friendship”. But I saw Serena’s outfit and I thought “Hmmm, maybe Meghan isn’t really your friend because a true friend would never have allowed you to show up at a polo match dressed like that. A true friend would have stopped you before you left your hotel”. All you need to do is watch “Pretty Woman” and see Julia Roberts dressed for the polo match with Richard Gere. Still I love a good friendship too 🙂

      • magnoliarose says:

I highly doubt ANYONE can tell Serena Williams what to wear and that includes her husband. lol

  4. Senaber says:

Ugh I hate going to the daily mail for photos. I understand why but… ugh.

  5. Digital Unicorn says:

I’d much prefer to be bestie’s with Serena than Federer any day.

Also Daddy dearest is still whining to the press about all he wants to do is see his daughter – says all he wants to know is if they are coming to visit or if he can go visit them, someone is desperate for something to sell to the press. Also the vile stepsister is apparently being courted for Celebrity Big Brother, god i hope not.

    • RBC says:

I still have my doubts that Daddy Dearest actually had serious enough health issues to require surgery and miss the wedding. They are disgusting. When TMZ and other tabloids turn on them it will be epic.

      • minx says:

I hope this is the end, that Meghan ghosts him and lives her life. I think she has already ghosted the rest of that good for nothing clan. If TM visits them or MM visits him he won’t be able to resist selling photos and information. MM’s only loyalty should be to her husband, her mother and her good friends. She owes nothing more to this person, she’s done enough for him and he has betrayed her.

      • still_sarah says:

@ Minx : I would agree. MM has made a decent effort but her father is not putting her interests first and that is sad. I have no doubt that if MM and Harry came to see him or had Markle Sr. visit them, he would sell them out to the press with interviews, stories, etc. and maybe set it up so that the paparazzi were there to get the photos. I said it before that I view the Thomas Markle Sr. episode as a youthful mistake of Doria’s who then went on to raise MM the best way possible with little interference from the Markle clan. I still love Doria.

      • CooCooCatchoo says:

I had my doubts about Daddy Dearest’s “heart emergency” all around. It was probably like an excuse that any ordinary person might give to skip out on an uncomfortable social event, except x100.

    • Masamf says:

I don’t believe this for one second. BB requires an individual to be able bodied so they can participate in the challenges that make the game the competition it is. Vonnie has a disability that automatically disqualifies her from participating in BB.

      • Peg says:

They will make a special exemption for Samatha, put her corner with a bullseye over a dunking tank, and use cricket balls to hit the bullseye.

      • Argonaut says:

where is “Vonnie” coming from? Her name is Samantha and we all know her as Samantha, even if she went by Yvonne at one point that’s still not “Vonnie”

      • Masamf says:

@Argonaut, her family calls her Vonnie. 😉😉 You can call her Samantha and I call her Vonnie, they both are her name’s. Just like Rachel is Meghan’s name and people call her either Rachel or Meghan. And I’m sure none of them minds either name.

      • Peg says:

        @Argonaut
Samatha Grant Markle was born as Yvonne Marie Grant.
All her family call her by her given name (Y) Vonnie.
When she was acting/modeling she went by Samatha Grant, then Meghan met Harry and she started going by Samatha Markle. (Google)
Rachel is really Meghan’s first name Samatha is a name change, not sure if she changed it legally.

      • Lady D says:

I couldn’t figure out why she was called Vonnie, either. Thanks for the info, Masamf.

      • magnoliarose says:

So what if people call her Vonnie? As if she deserves the respect of her full name. How about Vonshameless or whatever?
That name has become public because SHE has worked her way without decency into the public eye. so if some choose to use it so what.

      • Amelie says:

Pretty sure no one calls Meghan Rachel? The only time we heard her called that was for the wedding and that was the formal reading of their names. Otherwise the British pastor dude (Reverend?) called her Meghan throughout the ceremony. A lot of American people tend to go by their middle names, it’s kind of a Southern thing (even if Meghan is from CA). She professionally went by Meghan Markle, not Rachel. I had no idea her name was Rachel until I think I saw the document with the Queen’s approval (forgot the official name).

I remember the first time I saw Vonnie and was so confused hahaha. Apparently people like to troll Samantha Grant/Markle whatever her name is on social media with that nickname.

    • whatever says:

“I’d much prefer to be bestie’s with Serena than Federer any day”

Can’t resist a dig at Kate and the Middleton’s can you?

But I think you’ll find most ardent tennis fan’s would sell their grandmother’s to be friends with Federer. He’s has done so much to improve the popularity of the sport and when he is on fire its like watching a magician at work.

      • Masamf says:

@Whatever, I’m confused why is Digital Unicorn’s preference of friendship with Serena over that with Roger a dig at Kate and the Middletons? My goodness, this is giving me a bad headache.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

@Masamf, its because the Middletons are very good friends with Federer – he was at Pippa’s wedding.

Also @Whatever, my comment actually had nothing to do with them and more to do with the fact that I think Serena is a pretty awesome person who has done far more, not just for the sport, but also for the women’s game than many other people inc Federer. Plus I think her husband is a pretty interesting and cool guy. They are interesting people that if i could, would love to know them. Federer is not someone i generally pay attention to – I just don’t find him interesting, on or off the court. Now if we’re talking about Murray or Djokovic then that would be different, both seem like they’d be good company.

  6. magnoliarose says:

🙂 I love that MM is friends with Serena and that they are being friends while watching Harry play polo. My close girlfriends are very important to me so I like seeing that she is keeping hers’ close and in her life. I can’t imagine life without them.

    • Skylark says:

I love that too, and that Meghan has good, true, all-weather friends in her corner and is nurturing them and making them a solid part of her new life. I couldn’t do without mine either. They add such vital texture to my life. I also love that Serena plainly puts comfort over occasion and just dresses to please herself!

Anyone know how Meghan and Serena met? And how they became friends?

      • Laur says:

Not sure about comfort, the UK is having a bit of a heatwave atm! But maybe she just feels the cold more than others? Looking forward to seeing her at Wimbledon though, and always love a bit of polo.

      • Skylark says:

I’m in London. It’s sweltering! I did think that, actually, that Serena’s heat tolerance is very probably a lot higher than us ordinary mortals. She’s demonstrated that numerous times on court, not least in the blistering Melbourne heat of Jan 2009.

      • Masamf says:

Serena might also be “conditioning” her body for the Wimbledon heat.

      • Nic919 says:

She also lives in Florida so what’s called a heat wave in the UK is normal summer for her and most residents of the southern US.

      • Mego says:

Serena is a queen. Totally unpretentious comfortable outfit, ignoring the Wimbleton press bs and enjoying a day with her husband and friends. ❤️

      • still_sarah says:

@ Mego : I love Serena too but I think she could have found a comfortable outfit that was a bit more suitable for the event. Love the shoes though. Seriously – that is comfort.

    • Jamie says:

I can speak from personal experience when I say that, when your blood relatives are a trainwreck, your chosen family is an incredible support in your life. I think it’s wonderful to see Meghan being supported by her “sister” Serena.

  7. Snowflake says:

I love Megan’s dress. A lot of her outfits are something I would wear. She looks so happy and sweet, to me she seems really genuine.

    • Harla says:

I agree on all counts. Even though her clothes and accessories are way out of my price range I’ve discovered that I can find similar items in my closet and put together my own Meghan inspired outfits, I love shopping my closet! She does seem genuine doesn’t she? And I’m really liking the fact that she has lots of girlfriends, as someone who has never made friends easily I’m really in awe of that.

      • Snowflake says:

        @Marla
Me too. I envy other’s natural ability to mingle and make friends. I wish I had a lot of girlfriends like that.

      • Gemma says:

@Harla. Me too. She seems to have strong female friendships, which is a blessing. The ability to make friends easily is the one thing I envy in other people lives.

  8. Betsy says:

She’s serving up a flavor of Pretty Woman polo match realness here! Cute!

And yes, polo pants are very well cut.

  9. Redgrl says:

This outfit is really nice! Looks like a beautiful day too.

    • Becks says:

It is a great outfit! I actually have that hat, it’s by Madewell. It’s my go to in the summer.

      • Redgrl says:

Thanks, Becks! I need a good summer hat – it is sunny and 35 degrees (44 with humidex) here in eastern Ontario…spending the day in the water…

  10. TheOriginalMia says:

She looks very cool and comfortable. Serena does not, but I love that she and Alexis came. Friendship goals! I seriously hope we see Meghan in Serena’s box and not the royal box. Support your friend, Meghan!

    • minx says:

It has been so hot where I live that I reacted physically to Serena’s clothes, they make ME feel hot. Meghan looks cool, pretty and stylish.

      • Maria says:

@minx I live in Ontario and it’s 45c with the humidity. Thank goodness for A/C.

  11. Masamf says:

I have noticed that Meghan hasn’t done many staged pap strolls since engagement. I guess she is learning fast that the paps are not one’s friend. With all the negative articles about her being printed left and right, I just hope the Windsor brothers’ media loathing doesn’t rub off too much on her.

    • Peg says:

It will be hard not to rub off on her, they were down right all the isms to her.
It’s a good thing she ‘stopped reading stories about herself’ with her father and half-siblings doing the most damage, what room is left for strangers.

  12. Katydid20 says:

The polka dots didn’t help…….she looked a little too much like Julia Roberts in pretty woman :/

    • formerly known as Amy says:

Thats not polka dot that’s patterned. I know that doesn’t fit your narrative your trying to sell here but it’s what it is.

    • Masamf says:

Sorry I don’t get the snark, why is it bad to look like Julia Roberts?
One thing I don’t get is people claiming how this and that person is COPYING this and that person. Like, c’mon, that person did not invent no fashion!! Like people claim Meghan is copied Kate’s hair, buttons, etc. How is she copying Kate is she wore this hair and/or buttons years before she met Harry? Now Meghan is copying Julia Roberts and the other day Angelina Jolie was copying Megha etc, which of these women invented fashion or the dress design the other woman is being accused of copying? Can’t women just wear their clothes without having people tear them.down? I just can’t with these outrageous claims.

      • minx says:

It’s not bad at all to look like JR in that sequence, she looked drop dead gorgeous. I don’t really see the similarity, as I said upthread I think the hat is making some people think of the movie. JR’s hat was slightly different but, yeah, I guess I get it.

      • Peg says:

In Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts character I could be wrong, but I think she was a call girl.
Megan wore that hat to Wimbledon and when she touring Spain with her suppose matchmaker.

      • Masamf says:

Oh I get it. Meghan “channelled Julia Roberts” not because she looked anything like her at all but she’s likened to JR role in the movie! Got it now. Pretty subtle there I missed it. Silly me was going like “I don’t see any similarities at all”!! Wow!

      • Bella Dupont says:

        @ Peg

Yes, her character was a call girl in the scene, but as Minx has said several times she looked drop dead gorgeous, nothing like a call girl at all. I included a link with a picture above. Here’s a video (the quality is atrocious, but its the best i could find):

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CnnaiJ823I

      • inthekitchen says:

The snark is because Julia Roberts was playing a hooker! It’s just another way for people to take a dig at Meghan by likening her to a (fictional) prostitute. People just cannot stop otherizing Meghan. It’s gross and not a compliment in any way, IMO.

Especially because – and I just googled the movie dress – the dresses look NOTHING alike except possibly the length. The movie one is dark brown with white polka dots and a crew neck and made of some silky material. She’s wearing white shoes and a white “boater hat” with a ribbon the same as the dress fabric/pattern.

Meghan’s dress is white with light brown checks, made of lightweight cotton. She has a v-neck and a collar, plus it has buttons down the front so there’s a small slit. She’s got sandals on and a panama hat. The outfits look NOTHING alike.

      • Lizabeth says:

I don’t think the dress looks much like JR’s dress in Pretty Woman. But even with the story line (hooker and all) I’d rather be accused of channeling JR in that movie than channeling Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby when showing off my newborn son! And people seemed to think it was a compliment to say Kate’s dress at the Ascot last year brought to mind Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady and certain hats Kate has worn resembled her as Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The latter two fictional women had iffy pasts too! So I’m not sure if mentions of movie resemblances always have evil intents or are just an indication of the power of Hollywood images.

      • minx says:

No one is implying Meghan is a call girl, for heaven’s sake. JR’s look in that sequence was iconic and copied endlessly.

      • notasugarhere says:

minx, there are plenty of people all over forums and sites who have been claiming Meghan is a call girl. They’ve been promoting this lie since their relationship became public, claiming Meghan was “working” at Soho House. The latest round comparing her to JR’s movie role has that deliberate subtext on many sites.

      • OneLumpOrTwo says:

Saying she’s channeling Julia Roberts with her dress is in no way a dig at her. The brown polka dot dress was an iconic look that if I remember correctly spurred a trend during that time. Both dresses are similar in style, long with a full skirt and patterned with no sleeves. I can see why someone would make that comparison. Meghan’s outfit was a little more casual though and Julia wore heels, so she was definitely more dressed up. Both beautiful dresses and beautiful women though!

    • notasugarhere says:

This is a checkered outfit, no? If you look at photos from the PW movie, there’s no similarity beyond 1) they are both dresses and 2) white hat but of different shapes.

    • KiddV says:

Not a great movie but I did like that dress. I like Meghan’s too. Is there a close-up of her shoes anywhere?

      • minx says:

Glamour.com has a full length pic. They are brown leather gladiator sandals that are perfect with the dress.

    • MAF says:

LOL Some of you are just over the top with this. Not a single person was calling a Meghan a hooker/call girl because they mentioned the movie. They are comparing the looks ffs. The scene they are referring took place at a polo match and at first glance Meghan’s dress resembles the character’s dress in the scene. Anything beyond that is the rest of you reaching.

      • notasugarhere says:

At first glance, the dresses look nothing alike. It is a common rant among the worst anti-Meghan crowd, who have been claiming Meghan was a paid escort at Soho House. They’ve been spreading that lie for 18 months now.

      • MAF says:

I have not seen that here. Either way, this whole thread has become ridiculous from both the pro and con Meghan to the pro and con Kate camps. People can’t even make a simple observation without people jumping down each other throats. And it’s like this all the time.

      • spargel says:

MAF I agree. I was just coming down here to say that this is possibly one of the silliest threads I’ve ever seen on CB.

      • OneLumpOrTwo says:

        – MAF yes, the taking up of sides per meghan and kate is really out of hand. This is not the cafeteria and we don’t have to line up on different sides behind our choice for prom queen. When I read some of these comments that are so over the top, the word unhinged comes to mind.

    • magnoliarose says:

The dresses aren’t alike at all. So that seems like a stretch comparison though I guess I don’t think anyone means any harm by it. Maybe just two women looking cute and engaged at a polo match with pretty dresses?

  13. homeslice says:

She looked just like Pippa here!
Like Kate, her casual looks are sooooo much better than the formal ones…

    • formerly known as Amy says:

      She looks like Pippa’s daughter.

    • Masamf says:

She doesn’t look like Pippa nor does she look like anyone, she just looks like Meghan, period. Yes she is a WOC and can very well look like herself and still look gorgeous. I just hate that every time she looks good she is liked to some white girl, so nnoying.

    • notasugarhere says:

Pippa looks like Wallis, much squarer jaw and different face shape from Meghan.

  14. aquarius64 says:

Meghan will be in the royal box to convey she is royal. Not in Serena’s. It will be another round of negative headlines. Is the protocol if a royal is in the royal box the players have to bow and curtsey? And if Serena is playing against a British or Commonwealth player Meghan has to be neutral. Although royal politics come into play that could affect future royal engagements.

    • Nic919 says:

If none of these concerns applied to Kate and the Middletons supporting Swiss tennis player Roger Federer while sitting in the royal box I don’t see why it would matter any more for Meghan.

    • Dixiebells says:

This is ridiculous. This royal no politics thing has gotten out of hand. First of all American players do NOT have to curtsy to anyone. And unless people are still locked up in the Tower of London for insulting the royal family neither do British ones. It’s etiquette. You can either participate in it or not. Also Meghan hasn’t stopped being an American by birth or friends with Serena. I’m quite confident she can root for her American friend from the royal box without the world coming to an end.

      • inthekitchen says:

I agree that Americans (or players from other countries) do not have to curtsy, but I do think Serena has curtsied to the royal box before though. I have some vague memory of it…will see if I can find a pic. (Maybe it was just for a finals though…)

        Yes, here it is: https://tinyurl.com/yce48cna

        https://i.pinimg.com/originals/77/2c/4f/772c4fb00cb41237195c8570ab2bfecc.jpg

      • Dixiebells says:

Yep I know she did. But I think the point still stands you can choose to do it or not. Even if British. I’m sure there’s some more cultural weight to it if British but you won’t be arrested or something. The royal family’s own etiquette guide on their website outlines curtsying and bowing but its all under the category of suggested. I remember Andy Murray was going to play in front of the queen at one of her first visits in years and there was some back and forth beforehand about what he would do. I think there was an element of Scottish rebel to him being so blasé but his tone in interviews was over it. I think he sort of bare minimum bowed if I remember correctly. I’m more concerned about the idea that the royal family is never political (which we’ve explored on this website is demonstrably false) to the point that Meghan can’t root for her American friend while representing the Royal Family. I just don’t think that’s true or that anyone would care that much. She’s not going to show up to the royal box in an American flag mini skirt with a beer helmet on her head.

    • Masamf says:

Oh please, this is just bull crap. How many times has Kate rooted (yes publicly) for Roger Federer? Yes even when Roger is paying against Andy Murray.

  15. homeslice says:

No mention that Serena was gushing over Kate, calling her a number one badass woman??

    • minx says:

Kate, as in Kate Middleton? What did she say?
—Just went to read it. Huh.

    • KeWest says:

The daily fail has an article where Serena was impressed with how well Kate’s post pregnancy is.

      • Peg says:

Living in the US, you get use to staying the hospital a few days after having a baby it use to be longer, but Insurance Companies put a stop to that unless you have a C-Section.
Once I was in England and relative had a baby and was home in a few hrs, said she would’ve been home sooner, but the paper work was the holdup.
In The Netherlands I’m not sure, if most births are at home, and you get a mid-wife to help for a couple of weeks.
In the Medical field, Insurance for Ob-Gyn are the highest, so many Drs. stopped delivering babies due to lawsuits.

      • minx says:

I had my kids in the nineties and stayed two, two and a half days in the hospital. My insurance let the doctor make the call, so she asked me how long I wanted to stay (should have said a month😂). My mother had her children during the baby boom and stayed at least a week, even for uneventful births. Times change.

      • Masamf says:

Serena voted Kate for “facing the world in heels a day post giving birth”. The emphasis was on “in heels a day post birth”. She voted Beyonce as “badass 1” and Rihanna “badass 2”. Then Kate was “badass 3” and the one asking the questions was surprised that Kate was voted and asked Serena why Kate was a choice. Serena explained that she thought “facing the world in high heels a day post baby” is badass. Make what you may of her choices.

      • MeghanNotMarkle says:

New mothers really should be kept longer to check for signs of eclampsia or other postnatal problems. We have such a high maternal-fetal mortality rate here in the US, which is sad for a developed nation. I haven’t looked into other developed countries’ numbers in relation to length of hospital stay but I do know that this country in particular ignores new mothers’ health almost completely.

    • notasugarhere says:

Put in context it doesn’t mean much.

LB: OK. Since this is our first-ever Badass Women issue, who do you think is badass?

SW: Well, obviously Beyoncé. That goes unsaid. Rihanna goes unsaid. Kate Middleton!

LB: Could you imagine having a baby and then, right after, you put on makeup and go out to greet the public?

SW: No. And she was …  standing!

LB: I would be scared something would go … awry.

SW: [laughs] Me too! So she’s officially No. 1.

They’re joking she’s a badass because she walked out of the hospital in full hair-and-makeup (with help from her glam team) after giving birth. In an article where they again focus on how much medical trouble SW had after her daughter’s delivery.

      • minx says:

So, are you going to tell Serena her pick is wrong?

      • notasugarhere says:

I’m saying when you read it in context it doesn’t mean SW thinks Kate is the most amazing woman in the world. It is related to her own enormous health problems after delivery, and far less to do with Kate’s desire to always be made up to the 9s.

      • MM says:

Nota, it’s so amazing that you have a direct line to KP AND Serena! Wow.

      • notasugarhere says:

Nope just putting the full quote up so people can read and decide for themselves. Context matters.

SW isn’t saying Kate’s a badass for working hard, accomplishing things, or making a difference in the world by leveraging her unearned position. When you read the full article, to me the context has to do with SW’s own much-discussed health problems after birth. “And she was … standing” isn’t much of an amazing compliment, now is it?

      • xena says:

Here in Germany I actually found articles that I didn’t consider to be that wrong because women who had given birth just said how annoying it was that Kate stood there dressed up in Heels (and she wasn’t forced to do wear them). This pictures of high profile women who seem to effortlessy deliver their kids and look like models afterwards do give a very wrong perception of what giving birth means in reality. Some of them had vaginal births and just said, they couldn’t even leave their beds for several days, peeing was a nightmare. And this were complicationless births. We are still living in a patriarchial world where female pain issues are being belittled and this pictures do net help breaking the circle.

    • Masamf says:

Gushing? She applauded Kate for “facing the world in high heels after giving birth the previous day”, is that gushing? That’s what everyone her has been saying, non? She thought Kate was badass for wearing heels post baby, right?
And please help me understand, because Meghan and Serena hhangedbout together and it was mentioned you think Serena mention of Kate should get a thread too? Sorry I’m just trying to understand this!

      • homeslice says:

        Don’t hurt yourself…

      • notasugarhere says:

masamf, it was the interviewer who was going on about that. SW’s response was “And she was … standing”.

      • Masamf says:

@Homeslice, are you kidding me? Why exactly would I harm myself, because of Kate Middleton? You think Kate Middleton is worth all that and a bag of chips? You think I live my life for these Kate Middleton or for Meghan? SMH!!

    • Natalie S. says:

Jeez, it’s like little kids at a birthday party who also want a present. Serena said something nice about Kate. No mention of that?

But if it’s negative, then anyone bringing up Kate is a big meanie.

    • Sage says:

LOL at people arguing over who Serena likes more.

      • morrigan01 says:

@Sage IKR? Like somehow Serena thinking Kate is “badass” for standing in heals after giving birth means she doesn’t like Meghan – her friend for at least six years AND fellow California girl – anymore, or likes Kate better than her.

Serena was giving a compliment to her friend’s sister-in-law. Nothing more about it. Doesn’t mean Serena will be running off to hang out with Kate over Meghan anytime soon. Or ever at all

      • Redgrl says:

@sage & @morrigan1 – I know – this thread is getting ridiculous. Serena says something somewhat nice about Kate and all the Meghan superfans come rushing to say that “it wasn’t THAT nice” or “that’s not what she meant!” God forbid anyone should say anything nice about anything Middleton ever at all in here, apparently. For all the chatter about not pitting women against each other, some people on here are the utter worst for that. And I don’t think ANYONE here was suggesting Meghan was a call girl – and the main person who kept posting about it and what a terrible lie it was was her most staunch defender on here – which is kind of an odd way to defend someone – keep posting and commenting about a lie most people here have never heard of and giving it air. I initially enjoyed this thread the other day but all this foolishness has spoiled it. It was a beautiful day, Meghan looked lovely with her good friend. The end.

      • notasugarhere says:

You may not think that is what some were implying, redgrl, but that implication and straight out accusation has been thrown at her all over forums and sites since November 2016. Pointing that out is a way of letting the tumblr and DM leakers on here *know* we see them and know what they’re peddling.

      • Redgrl says:

@nota – are you for real? Please reread the last bit of what you just wrote. Who has time for that – monitoring comments and surmising about who are “leakers” and saying nasty things about Meghan. You obviously take all this very seriously, when at the end of the day neither Meghan nor Kate read this site, I’m sure, and don’t care about what any of us write or say on here whether it’s good, bad or indifferent.

      • notasugarhere says:

redgrl, I find it useful to shut down trolls who are seeking to derail what has been a highly-enjoyable forum up til now. There are few places online that are relatively middle of the road when it comes to royals; this has been a nice refuge.

      • Redgrl says:

@nota – that sentiment I can understand for sure.

  16. notasugarhere says:

IMO Serena should have been more professional and rescheduled her press meeting. It was only 10-15 minutes; she could have made room for that.

    • whatever says:

Its most likely she was avoiding the press because she was going to be asked/grilled about that drug test she refused to take (news about that came out this week). If she did however cancel the extremely short press conference just to go to the polo then that is unprofessional.

      • Coz says:

Well she didn’t refuse to take the test. The guy came outside the agreed schedule.

      • whatever says:

        @Coz

Unscheduled testing is still something the players have to do. She should have just done the test i’m flabbergasted she didn’t. By refusing, she has given the impression she has something to hide. It also count’s as a ‘missed test’, 2 more missed tests in a 12 month period and she get’s slapped with a ban.

Her PR team are probably ripping their hair out over this.

      • inthekitchen says:

@whatever, Coz is correct. There was a time that the tester was supposed to show up at her house. The tester came late and Serena had left already. That is a big difference (to me anyway) than stating “she refused to take a drug test.”

      • whatever says:

        @inthekitchen

From what i have read the tester came outside her requested time-slot which counts as an unscheduled test. The only way an unscheduled test would not count as a missed test is if the drug testers show up at a players home/hotel room/ other place they have detailed on there whereabouts profile and the player wasn’t there . Serena’s assistant made the mistake of inviting them in when meant they were able to wait for her to arrive home. The moment she arrived home and refused to do the test it counted as a missed test. The mistake is with her assistant. The assistant should have just said she wasn’t in and told the tester to go .That was the truth and that explanation would have sufficed.

For a player who has been dogged for years by rumours that she has an unfair advantage over other players and takes steroids and other PED’s, refusing to do a drug test is an incredibly dumb thing to do. If I was in her position I would have just done the test because let be honest it doesn’t require much effort to pee in a cup does it?

      • Coz says:

@Whatever Let’s not talk about the fact that she’s been testing 5 TIMES since January. No other American WTA player had been tested that much.

      • Masamf says:

@Whatever, you are confusing the facts. Serena did NOT REFUSE to be tested, the tester REFUSED to leave and INSISTED on waiting till Serena got back from wherever she was at.
@Nota Serena rescheduled the press conf for Sunday and it did go ahead as planned. And she was asked about and DID address the testing incident which she is being accused of trying to evade.

    • windyriver says:

She cancelled and rescheduled the press for today. See the Twitter snip above, a few lines before the link to the DM photos.

  17. Electric Tuba says:

This entire article was completely enjoyable for a Sunday morning read ✌️😁❤️

  18. Joannie says:

That top pic is most unfortunate and funny. Obvious lip plumping happened at some point.

    • inthekitchen says:

Lol, stop, Joannie. Meghan has naturally full lips. Look back at any of her childhood pictures. Her lips are pursed in the picture, sure, since she’s clearly in the act of speaking…but nope, no artifical lip plumping! Meghan has no need for any injections, unlike your girl Kate whose upper lip is not nearly as nonexistent as it once was.

      • morrigan01 says:

I’ll be blunt: most people who are of African decent don’t need lip injections because (for the majority of us) our lips are NATURALLY full. In fact, being called “big lipped” is one of the known racist insults used against African-Americans here in the states because of this fact. (And yes, that normally goes for biracial people like Meghan as well).

Having full lips didn’t even become a beauty standard until around the 90s.

So yeah, I half side-eyes at Joannie’s comment, given the history of all of that, not just for the fact that Meghan has had that full lip trait since she was born, and you can see in all the pictures and videos of her as a little girl.

    • Sophia's side eye says:

Is this what some naturally thin lipped people need to tell themselves? Some women have naturally full lips, I do. *shrugs* My bff has thin lips and she’s absolutely stunning in every way. But whatever makes one feel better, I guess.

  19. anonymousss says:

They are in Henley, not Ascot. Looking forward to going there in a few weeks for the Regatta. Anyway, Meghan is copying Kate here.. from the outfit, right down to the careless, relaxed, happy pap pic poses lol.

    • Sam says:

      *massive eyeroll*

    • homeslice says:

Yes, two days out in a row papped at polo matches…I guess she is feeling very jealous of Kate, LMAO.

      • whatever says:

        LOL! 🙂

      • Masamf says:

Naahh, even a blind person can tell that pics this grainy are non staged. Just like Kate Middleton’s south of France pics weren’t staged, neither were these.

    • Jessica says:

      Girl bye!

    • MAF says:

      LOL Get off it.

    • Mego says:

She doesn’t look like she’s acting at all. I think she is a naturally positive person who is feeling a lot of joy and it’s lovely to see.

    • anonymousss says:

Lmaooo, you guys are hilarious!! It’s not that serious. Btw, yes these grainy pap pics are pre-approved…. Just like Kate’s were. That’s what I was trying to point out because there are similarities.

  20. Brandy Alexander says:

I guess I’m the only one who hates the dress. It makes her look so boxy, belted coats and dresses are not her friend. I prefer the looks she’s been wearing to the royal events, buttons and all.

  21. Mego says:

Some of the recent stories made up about her are really terrible. The one about Harry refusing to hold her hand caught on like wildfire yet the video to me showed no evidence that she was even trying to hold his hand.

The New York post has one about how being a duchess has turned her into a fashion frump and then there was a huge fuss about her shoes. Don’t get me started on the endless breaking, protocol nitpicking. Poor Meghan does not in anyway deserve this.

    • Sage says:

Just shows the silliness of a royal family.

      • Mego says:

Perhaps yet I think the royal family would be very patient with her around protocal missteps – and they have been trivial indeed. It’s the public who are having kittens about it and nitpicking about every little thing.

    • magnoliarose says:

New York Post is a conservative rag. Pure yellow journalism and no one really takes what they say seriously. They are America’s DM.

  22. PrincessK says:

I am in my tent queueing overnight to get on to Centre Court tomorrow. I am both a huge Federer and Serena fan but I don’t like the way it seems both of them are being distracted by royalty. Last year Roger went to KP during the middle of a tournament on a play date with his kids and he then crashed out the tournament. Serena is usually so focused so she had better not crash out.
I don’t like the comparison between Meghan and the Pretty Womab character.

  23. morrigan01 says:

Honestly, it’s been pretty clear to me from the get-go that Meghan would have a “work” look and an “not at work” look. Most working women do. I have clothes I wear when I have to go into a professional work setting, and then the clothes I wear around the house, or when I’m hanging out with friends. The two looks are quite different, though still “me” in how they are.

So Meghan will have different clothes she wears to Royal Engagements from the clothes she wears to things like this. I bet if the goes to Wimbledon, we wont see her in her “royal” look at all, but in her normal style (which is very laid back California).

  24. OneLumpOrTwo says:

I love this dress on Meghan! It is the perfect dress for this casual event and she looks comfortable and stylish. Shoshanna is a great brand, they make very pretty and feminine dresses. It’s still unaffordable for most people, but it’s not over the top expensive. I would definitely buy their dresses, but I don’t see them in stores where I live very often and I hate ordering online. Her sandals are cute too. Her makeup from afar looks very fresh, she looks like she is happy and having a great time.

  25. Ravine says:

I love how Will was at this match too, but no one cares. Oh, Will…
