Saoirse Ronan covers the August issue of Vogue. Ronan is a bit of a surprising choice in some ways, mostly because she seems so low-key and like she doesn’t really enjoy sitting down for fashion-magazine profiles. But on the other hand, she arguably the best actress of her generation and a beautiful young woman, so of course Vogue wants her. The interview takes place entirely in Ireland during the Irish referendum campaign on abortion, a campaign which was successful in legalizing abortion in the country. Saoirse took part in the campaign and she was thrilled that people voted to legalize it. You can read the full Vogue piece here. Some highlights:
She remembers gay marriage being legalized in Ireland in 2015: “Driving through north Dublin, and everyone had the flags out. They were having street parties. It felt as though we had moved into a new stage. It was like we had woken up.”
Whether she was worried about backlash for supporting abortion rights: “I just felt like that wasn’t important. I know people who had to travel abroad in order to get an abortion, and that’s when I knew I would speak out…. I wouldn’t say I grew up politically minded, but the older I get, the more in touch I am with what activists are doing—and the more I want to help them.”
When Ireland voted for abortion: “[I’m] so proud to see family and friends, and people I wouldn’t have expected to vote yes, choose to give Irishwomen their rights.”
When she gets recognized: “I still get completely shocked that anyone knows who I am… But I’m not . . . famous. I just genuinely don’t think I am. Selena Gomez is famous.”
She’s not interested in her public image: “I just get so anxious whenever I watch anything that I’m in… I’m fine with the way I look now. But I wouldn’t necessarily be looking at photographs of myself all day. I don’t want to become too consumed by the image of myself.”
She hasn’t done any superhero movies: “I mean, I haven’t been offered any! If a script came along that was strong, interesting, original, I would take it. A good script is a good script.”
She’s single: “When I’m working, I can’t really do anything else. I can’t go out, I can’t meet up with anyone, I don’t read anything. Someone said to me, ‘You’re monogamous when it comes to your work,’ and it’s so true. You can only commit to one thing at a time.”
She just seems like a normal person. It doesn’t feel like an affectation to me at all, like Jennifer Lawrence can seem sometimes with her “I’m so normal” shtick. Like, I truly believe that Saoirse just hangs out at her mom’s house and she doesn’t have a Google Alert set on her name and she’s not interested in the superficial stuff of being a “celebrity.” I love that she was campaigning for the abortion rights referendum too.
Here’s her “73 Questions With…” feature.

She seems real and grounded
OMG I love her. Such a good actress
She’s so natural when she’s acting. Just saw Brooklyn for the first time recently and she’s wonderful in it. The whole movie is wonderful.
Thank you Saoirse! So very brave.
She’s such a talented actress. I may not like all her movies, but I like her in them. Speaking of Jennifer, when I saw Saoirse in that Hanna movie long ago, my first thought was she would make an excellent Katniss. I know everyone raved about Jennifer in that role but I still think she would have been better.
I agree about Katniss. She has more depth as an actress.
The pro-life talk scene in Lady Bird is hilarious. Love that she’s commited to this IRL. Here in Argentina, we’re less than a month away from getting it (I hope). The Higher House of Congress has already voted for Yes. Lower House is next.
THAT COVER THO 😍. She lost that role to Jennifer but yea she is the better actress all around.
I would love to know where the 73 questions were filmed. Love the look of the house !
Love her.
Excuuuuuse me what do you mean she hasnt played a super hero!?!?!? Have you seen her in HANNA?????
she is marvel & dc combined… they ain ready for her skills
