Madonna opened her 2009 Sticky and Sweet Tour Saturday night at 02 Arena in London, where Michael Jackson would have begun his 50 concert residency on July 13. She paid tribute to her fallen comrade through a Michael Jackson impersonator who did some of his signature moves to “Wanna Be Starting Something.” Madonna then asked the crowd to “Give it up for one of the greatest artists the world has ever known,” adding “Long live the King.”
For all you can say about Madonna, she’s still bringing it at 50 and putting on incredible performances. It’s just sad that Jackson didn’t get to show the world that the music never left him either.
We may get a chance to see more of the moves Jackson was reinventing in his last days. MSNBC reports that rehearsal footage exists of “practically every minute” he prepared for his comeback shows:
The video AEG released from Michael Jackson’s final rehearsal, which took place 48 hours before his sudden death, is just one of many that exist.
“Practically every minute of every rehearsal, since they began in March, was videotaped,” according to a well-placed source inside the “This Is It” tour production. “After Michael died everything was turned over to AEG.”
Also, the source verifies that the tape that’s already been released is indeed from Jackson’s last rehearsal.
“Some people are saying that because he wasn’t performing to 110 percent it must be from an old rehearsal. That’s ridiculous — it’s the last rehearsal. You can tell he’s totally on, that is just how an artist rehearses. When it’s a real show, that’s when you go all out.”

AEG is likely to release some kind of DVD set. They’ve got to recoop the immense concert costs somehow. They were only insured for 10 out of 50 concerts.

I think it’s fascinating to compare the way Madonna and Michael Jackson aged.
Both trying to maintain their youth through plastic surgery. Both trying to maintain their relevance working with younger, hipper artists (Michael was reportedly working with Will I. Am when he died). Both with two divorces, and seemingly unable to find a suitable life partner. Both the children of large Midwestern families, and both raising patchwork families of bio/adopted/surrogate children – and by most accounts, doing a pretty good job as parents. Both trying to push their bodies to youthful performance levels at age 50.
Michael’s death must scare the hell out of Madonna.
Incidentally, she also reportedly suffers from terrible insomnia.
I have to say, I have no love for Madonna and never had any for Michael (well, his music and his post-surgery appearance and craziness anyway) but this… this moved me. It was a very sweet, succinct way to pay tribute to him and his undeniable legacy. Whoddathunk Madge could be this nice about anyone beside herself? Sure it’s a publicity boosting stunt, but it is still sweet.
The crowd seemed to love it.
She must have won them round, since she kept them waiting over an hour before coming on to the stage to boos.
That was a great way to honor, probably the only male counterpart who could be considered her equal, even without a hit album on the charts. Madonna is very aware of the immense love that the world has for MJ, especially the brits. The impersonator was a sight for sore eyes, even if he was a bit wild in sticking the moves. I loved his ending.
Kudo to Madonna and “Long Live Michael”.
She only tries to get a free ride and keep herself in the news by using poor Michael Jackson’s tragedy. When he was alive, she made fun of him and called him a weirdo. What a self centered self serving bitch.
