Kim Cattrall’s ‘Sex & the City 3’ storyline involved Miranda’s teenage son

'Tell Me A Story' Premiere

I guess Sarah Jessica Parker has really given up the ghost about making the third Sex and the City movie, because details about the script have been leaking out in a steady stream the past few weeks. Last week, we heard about the big Carrie-centric plotline, which would have involved killing off Mr. Big with a heart attack, and then focusing the movie on Carrie’s grief and widowhood. That alone made me understand why Kim Cattrall declined to do SATC 3 after she read the script. But apparently, there was a lot more – Samantha’s plotline would have involves Miranda’s teenage son Brady.

The plot thickens as new details emerge about the canceled Sex and the City 3 movie. A source close to the project is revealing to E! News what led to the demise of the highly-anticipated third installment.

According to the insider, it wasn’t just Big’s all-consuming death that discouraged Kim Cattrall from signing on for the third movie, but pay disparities and the script as a whole. “Kim never wanted to really do the movie to begin with,” the source reveals. “It was a combination of not great money and a bad storyline for Samantha.”

“It was a bad script,” the source puts it simply. What made the script so bad you may ask? Well, for starters, Samantha’s “main storyline” revolved around her and Miranda’s 14-year-old son Brady.

[From E! News]

E! News goes on to say that Brady gets “caught” jerking off, presumably by Samantha (?) and then he sends d-ck pics to Samantha. If Samantha’s storyline involved her grooming or educating a 14-year-old boy, then that’s yet another reason I’m thankful that Cattrall walked away. We don’t need to see a Dateline Predator storyline somehow get glamorized. And seriously, this was the “beautiful” script that SJP kept referring to? A script where a beloved character gets killed off and Samantha’s storyline is wrapped up in a 14-year-old boy???

I’m truly shocked this thing continues to appear in headlines.

    • I agree!! says:

Agreed!!! All of it’s taking away from what was once a great franchise!!! It’s embarrassing now.

    • lucy2 says:

It is insane. Like I said in the last post about this, they need to LET IT GO. Move on already.

If SJP or whoever thinks putting these details out is going to make people mad at Kim for ruining “what could have been” they are seriously overestimating themselves. This all sounds horrid.

  2. Patty says:

Just no. So glad this dumpster fire of a movie will never see the light of day. SPJ can take all the seats. Ridiculous.

    • Coco says:

This movie sounds awful and I’m glad Kim said no. I remember how horribly she was treated last year by SJP and others in the cast, especially after her brother died, because she didn’t want to do the movie or reprise the character. I think even less of them all now that they weren’t grossed out by Samantha’s storyline with a 14 year old Brady. Beautiful script? Riiiiiight.

  3. Gigi La Moore says:

That’s just gross. Samantha was a freewheeling woman but she had character and standards. That storyline is beneath both character and actress.

    • Tiffany says:

Agreed. If they had a talk about the birds and the bees ( that is something in character for her), that would be different, but it does not seem where it was going.

Samantha was never a gross or shock value character. Amazing how that changed with Parker at the helm.

    • Char says:

SJP, as a producer, would make the choice to paint Samantha as a sexual predator? And was bitchy about Kim not wanting to be on it? Each day we get more evidence she is Carrie, in the worst way possible.

      • Tiffany says:

Not just Parker, Michael Patrick King has always been problematic on…. well everything. *looking at you 2 Broke Girls*

      • Char says:

Let’s not forget that Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis were very on board for this shit.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

The plot lines seem designed to humiliate KC as much as possible in the end of the show and the two films. The story about her weight gain was awful in the way it was handled.

  4. Anna says:

Yikes! Glad we are never seeing this. It keep getting worst.

  5. Darla says:

omg. I am so glad Kim said no. This is gross and wrong and awful

  6. isadora says:

I never watched Sex & The City. But i knew enough about the premise and the characters that it wasn’t for me. It might’ve worked that time but then everyone moved on and SJP gets stuck in her head that she needs to have that former glory back. Just leave it be and move on. No one is asking for a comeback.

  7. launicaangelina says:

Nope. That’s awful. I love Samantha/Kim and this is unacceptable. I just finished rewatching the series on Amazon. Kim is a hero for stopping this travesty.

  8. ChillyWilly says:

Ewwww! Kim AND Samantha deserve better than that. I can’t stand SJP. Kim is a better actress and miles more attractive than SJP and I think that’s why they always gave Samantha the shaft as far as storylines. Good for Kim saying no to this drivel.

  9. Jay says:

Is that Kim in the header?! I almost didn’t recognize her! And I’m so so glad she was like yeah HARD PASS on this garbage. Gross, gross, gross.

  10. Laura says:

Super, super, super gross. I watched the show on and off & completely forgot that there was even a second movie. Please, let this show die!

  11. Murphy says:

Thank you for saving us from this Kim.

  12. Lilly says:

    Samantha/Kim for president! lol

  13. Sash says:

Kim Cattrall has self-worth and everyone attacking her just proves her point over and over. They really were doing everything to embarrass her.

  14. Sam the Pink says:

Well, I can’t imagine why a woman would turn down a role that would require her to portray a sexual predator. I mean, unless it was assured to win an Oscar. Which….somehow, I don’t think this was.

  15. Kim says:

And here I thought Samantha on the casket with the priest at Big’s funeral for the “comic relief” moment would be the worst case scenario.
I should have known better. Jesus, how creepy.

  16. Jenns says:

This is actually making me angry. You have four women all over 40, staring in a popular TV/movie series, and this is the best sh*t you can come up with?!? The fact that they all didn’t demand better is infuriating. I can’t believe any of the actors whining about this movie being made would defend this garbage.

  17. greenmonster says:

Where does this say anything about Samantha grooming Brady? If a boy sends her d*ck pics, that’s on him and has nothing to do with her grooming him. I think it would make sense for a boy Brady’s age to have a crush on someone like Samantha and misreading her simply being understanding. So in that way, this storyline would have made sense. It still is an awful storyline to act for the boy portraying Brady. And a boring storyline for Samantha to be honest. She is an amazing character – do something with her. She deserves much more than just being the desire of a 14 year old boy.

    • perplexed says:

Nothing about this storyline makes sense. Would a 14 year old really have a crush on a 60 year old? (no matter how pretty Kim Cattrall is?). The only thing I can figure is that Samantha the character might encourage him to some degree ….resulting in the photos being sent….I can see a 14 year old having a crush on a 25 year old or a 30 year old …MAYBE (and even then I’m not sure) a 40 year old, but a 60 year old??? Huh. No. This makes no sense. Maybe that’s where the presumption of grooming is coming from — how could he possibly get that idea on his own? Even Emmanuel Macron’s wife was “only 39” when he as a 15 year old started crushing on her (and even that’s confusing to me).

When I was 14, I’m pretty sure I thought 40 was super ancient and could never picture myself as that age. Sure, I thought Robert Redford was a handsome 60 year old, but anyone other than that…he was my one exception…and even then I was probably re-picturing 60 year old Robert Redford as the younger version everyone else saw of him in old glamorous photos from previous eras.

I really can’t wrap my head around this storyline.

Maybe SJP really wanted the Samantha character to look bad.

    • Lex says:

Like her character must be nearly 60. This whole thing is gross and weird and needs to DIE forever.

They’re ruining whatever little good will the original series had (which is very little considering how racist, homophobic, classist, transphobic, generally irritating etc etc etc it was)

  18. Winnie Cooper's Mom says:

Shut down this SATC train once and for all, and give Kim her own show where she’s the leading lady.. the confident, beautiful, um non-predator, sexy 60-something that she is! I would watch that.

    • minx says:

I would too. She is wonderful.

    • Michel says:

Have you seen Sensitive Skin? It’s a Canadian show (on Netflix, I think). It lasted two seasons. A really great how that showcases Kim’s acting and emotions. Try it!

      • Lady2Lazy says:

Thanks for the comment. I have it saved on Netflix to watch! I have always enjoyed KC since I watched Mannequin!

    • Anna says:

Thanks @Michel for the suggestion! I’ll definitely check this show out. And I love the idea of Kim having her own show. SATC but just her and very sex positive. Look at Grace and Frankie with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. It’s not the same kind of plot at all but it’s wonderful to see such positive, non-stereotypical roles for women in the 70s and the comedic genius of those two. Plus, they start a vibrator company for older women which is awesome (and there is talk of it becoming a real product, not sure if that was just hype for the show but shit, I’d buy it lol)

    • LahdidahBaby says:

      Ditto!

  19. Roc says:

Kim is a much better actress than this crap. In fact, she did a movie called Meet Monica Velour where her character has to deal with a teen who is obsessed with her (he’s 18) and her character handles it MUCH BETTER than what I assume the SaTC folks would’ve had this crap movie ever been made.

  20. SM says:

So SJP has no problem portraing a woman of her own age as complitely dependant on a partner, as she would yet again would play a woman whose story is defined by a man, or as a sexual predator, the role Kim was supposed to play? She really is stuck in a tim Sex amd the City first aired on TV. We do not need this crap in 2018.

  21. KBeth says:

    Yuck.

  22. SJhere says:

    What’s the matter with SJP?
She’s got more money than she’ll ever be able to spend, why is she still beating this dead horse of SATC? Woman, please move on!
If she is able to be a producer .. Well go ahead and do that. Stop this ugliness.
    Yuck +100%

More power and good job to KC for saying no.
    You are correct Kim. 🙂

Oh, and I agree with the Boo to 2 Broke Girls, how that idiot T & A show ever got on the air is a mystery to me. Set comedy back to the 50’s.

  23. bonobochick says:

    Yikes.

No wonder KC was like “no thanks” to a third movie (among other reasons previously stated by her).

  24. Xtrology says:

It’s really hard to get this famous. SJP should really be thankful Kim killed this script. It sounds like a nightmare.

  25. Lizzie says:

As much as I love Miranda – Samantha has the most desirable life on the show. She is a high powered successful entrepreneur, she lives by her own rules, fiercely protects the friends that are her family, has consensual, personally fulfilling sexual relationships and two true love stories and is a cancer survivor who used her connections to help others. Making her a caricature was the mistake that ruined the movies. While Carrie and Miranda got to be “real” they had Samantha and Charlotte acting like goofy twits completely against who they were on the show. I’d rather be her than broke, neurotic carrie or rich neurotic charlotte or smart neurotic miranda.

    • BBeauty says:

Depends what you consider desirable. Her characters life is not for everyone. Some people would find Charlottes life desirable. Or Mirandas career driven life desirable. Depends on what you want out of life, I suppose.

      • Lizzie says:

maybe you missed that it was my opinion? you write your post on yours.

IMHO – Samantha also had a career driven lifestyle. she was a top PR person who owned her own NYC firm.

    • Sue Denim says:

I so agree with you Lizzie. Samantha was my favorite character on the show. I always thought she was the most generous, most fully realized, original and independent one of the 4, the way she took care of her friends, her career, herself and had relationships on her own terms was novel. The sexual lifestyle wouldn’t have been my choice but it was hers, and hers to make and she lived it honestly and I think with integrity. Why the writers et al lost that so completely in the movies is just weird…and sad… We could use more original characters like that, whether we actually want their lives or not, if only as an example of alternatives to the usual tired tropes.

  26. Christine Stephens says:

the 2nd move was a travesty and it sounds like the 3rd movie was heading down the same path

    • BrutalEthyl says:

It’s more like the second ,one was swirling toilet water and the third one would have been the cesspool that overflowed, backed up and stunk up movie theaters and people’s homes.

  27. holly hobby says:

That storyline is so full of ew considering we have Roy Moore. How is that even appropriate SJP?

  28. Pandy says:

The only thing “beautiful” about this hot mess was SJP emoting her widow grief (she thinks) …. sounds terrible!

  29. BrutalEthyl says:

That outfit KC’s wearing is, um, not good. Not good at all. But she looks good, and not just “good for her age.” She’s beautiful and natural. And when she dresses up (the other pictures) she’s the most glamorous one of the four. Keep being you, KC!

  30. BBeauty says:

Gross. I truIy hope this is not accurate and that the writers and whoever would not have actually done a storyline that involves Kim doing sexual things with a teenage boy. That is appalling and not funny. Good for her for walking away.

  31. Molly says:

Yikes. SJP is out of touch. Kim was absolutely right to walk away.

  32. Kibble says:

You just know SJP continued to try to sideline the other characters in boring storylines so Carrie won’t be so unappealing – in vain.

  33. DesertReal says:

    Sooo…
    All good points.

But seriously wtf is going on with Kristen Davis’ neck/head situation in that picture? Oh my goodness…I feel like it made me lose my train of thought,

  34. whybother says:

of course, it was beautiful in sjp’s mind
she got to be the center as a grieving widow
who cares about what other characters do anyway
carrie is at the center, carrie is beautiful~
    //s

  35. Morrissey says:

SJP’s veil continues to drop. Her BFF is misogynistic trash Bravo Andy whatshisname. Her husband is toxic masculinity too. She has spoken out against Feminism. And her “beautiful, soulful” character, Carrie, that she continues to defend and push, is awful.

The remainder of nostalgic love I felt for her, for the ‘80s and ‘90s movies of my childhood, has run dry.
