The Cambridges skipped out on a foundation meeting that the Sussexes attended

Eugenie Jack wedding Windsor

No surprise, several royal stories “broke” in the British tabloids late Friday and into Saturday. Weirdly, this weekend’s stories don’t seem like “Duchess Meghan is SUCH a diva” stories. It’s almost like the tabloids tried that for two weeks in a row to see if it would stick, so now they’re going in a slightly different direction. Obviously, I thought that some of the “leaks” about the Cambridges and Sussexes came from William, Kate, Carole Middleton and their associates. But I don’t know who is leaking this stuff, because it makes Will and Kate look lazy, petty and work-shy. Perhaps this is something from Meghan and Harry?

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge failed to attend a board meeting of the Royal Foundation this week amid rumours of a royal rift with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. William and Kate lead the foundation together with Harry and Meghan but while the Duke and Duchess of Sussex both attended the meeting, as well as a staff Christmas party afterwards, the other two members of the so-called Fab Four didn’t show up.

Kensington Palace insists that the Cambridges were not expected, but a source admitted that it ‘was a shame’ they didn’t attend the meeting or the subsequent party. Rumours of a rift between the Cambridges and the Sussexes have spread like wildfire following the announcement that Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37, are set to move away from Kensington Palace to Frogmore Cottage. And the latest chapter of the rumoured rivalry saw Harry and Meghan attend the board meeting alone.

A source revealed: ‘Not only were Harry and Meghan there, but they went to the staff Christmas party afterwards. It was a very jolly affair. It’s a shame that William and Catherine did not turn up.’

Kensington Palace insists that the Cambridges had not been expected. ‘Their Royal Highnesses attend these meetings in turn,’ a spokesman says. ‘This session was focused on programmes led by the Duke of Sussex.’

[From The Daily Mail]

See what I mean? Who looks bad here? And who benefits? Is Harry above calling up a reporter (or directing a staffer at the foundation to call up a reporter) to drop this piece of information? Anyway, I believe that Will and Kate probably weren’t scheduled for the meeting. But their absence adds to the overall intrigue, and Will and Kate would have known that too. Harry and Meghan are hard at work at foundation meetings, and they’re so down-to-earth that they have jolly Christmas parties with staffers. Meanwhile Will and Kate are – once again – too lazy to show up.

There is a story in the Fail saying that another one of her aides is resigning and calling Meghan “Duchess Difficult”, so yes, the diva stories continue.

    • Scal says:

A staff member that was only working for them temporarily after 20 years of service and then ALWAYS planned on retiring. She has 3 kids and always said she was leaving.

But now it’s oh Megan is making her leave? Obvious DM being obvious

      • Beach Dreams says:

Right. What makes this “story” even more eye roll worthy is that the reporter of this story (Roya Nikkhah) tweeted months ago that it was an interim position. These reporters are contradicting themselves in their efforts at a hit job.

  2. MM says:

Harry hadn’t been since 2014. It’s not a big deal.

  3. xdanix says:

Um, this story is actually wrong. The reporter later acknowledged in a tweet that Meghan wasn’t there either- Harry was the only one at the meeting, because the whole meeting was about his work for the next year.

    • Eliza says:

      Stop making the sense. Lol.

Every day these boys wake up and strategize how to make the other look bad by following their pre-announced work schedule and moving into bigger houses with a baby on the way. Andmaking staff that was supposed to leave, exit on time. The horror.

    • Beth says:

So there was no need for Kate and William to even be there in the first place. It’s just another story about the BRF being spun by a British tabloid into dramatic gossip to get people to believe there’s nonstop fighting and jealousy among the royals and keep the royals fans coming back everyday to read to read more stories on the Daily Mail? Hmmm. You’re definitely making sense

    • Eggnog says:

Exactly. This is just another attempt to create drama where there is none

    • notasugarhere says:

And both Harry and Meghan were at the staff and foundation after. Why is it W&K didn’t feel the need to acknowledge the hard work of the people who do everything for which they take credit?

The excuse was already put forward their daughter had a school event. As they would have known that months in advance, they could have had their foundation event changed. If they had had any intention of showing up and thanking the staff.

      • Megan says:

How do you know they have not thanked the staff in some other way?

      • notasugarhere says:

It is rude not to show up to the joint event to celebrate the staff. Not the first time W&K have failed to do so, not the first time their actions made the staff party worse (remembering the movie debacle from a few years ago).

      • Meganbot2000 says:

It’s a Christmas party, not an “event to celebrate staff.”

It’s weird for bosses to turn up to a staff Christmas party. Christmas parties are supposed to be for staff to let their hair down.

      • Nic919 says:

Every single staff Xmas party I have been to has had the “bosses” attend for at least part of it since they are paying for it. Work Christmas parties are work events in some form so it would be very foolish to go very crazy.

    • yogi bear says:

And the Cambridges have been all over the news with their events. The way the narratives are shaped by people who have absolutely no dog in this fight is unusual. It’s so silly when a platform essentially becomes the propagandist arm of one side of the BRF as if they have any influence over what’s unfolding but I guess shutting down dissenting opinions is the new way of doing business. So weird.

  4. Nan says:

They were never scheduled or expected to be there!

    • Beth says:

Exactly! It’s not like they were planning on going and didn’t mention they weren’t so the meeting was delayed while they sat waiting for the Cambridges

    • Enn says:

No no no, they were being lazy! Don’t start sensibly going off script!

      • Nan says:

I am sure Kate was too busy getting Botox and hair to show up to a meeting she wasn’t invited too.

    • Sharon Lea says:

Diana made a point to go to staff end of year/holiday parties. She knew it meant a lot to the staff who worked hard for her and Charles all year.

  5. WOW says:

I wish my life was as easy as these people.

    • Dali says:

      @wow,
      Me too 😉

    • Beth says:

Me too! A “job” that was going to a meeting once in a while, dressing up to go to parties, attending events for a couple of hours and cutting ribbons, all while dressed in expensive clothes I didn’t have to pay for sounds like easy “work ” I might enjoy

  6. roses says:

Some of the stories need to be taken with a grain of truth especially when coming from the DM and the Sun. As someone stated above, its been revealed Meghan was not even in attendence, it was just Harry there. These tabs would rather create drama based stories for clicks than just tell the truth.

  7. Becks1 says:

This is one of those stories that could be true with no malice or anything – Harry attended, William didn’t, not a big deal, they both don’t always go, etc – but given the timing it ends up looking bad for William.

  8. MM says:

It also bears mentioning that this meeting was the same day as Charlotte’s first nativity play.

    • notasugarhere says:

It is their foundation. They could have changed the date of the meeting if they’d had any intention of showing up.

      • Dessi says:

Did you not see how the others above pointed out that they weren’t supposed to attend and that even Megan herself did not attend. And that the journalist himself took it back.

      • Lady D says:

The point is, they should have been. It’s their staff and the party is to thank their staff. They could have easily put in an appearance for the staff’s sake. I really doubt the school play ran the same length of time the soiree did.

      • Sharon Lea says:

ITA Notasugarhere, very easy to move a date for a party, the staff bend over backwards for them all year, they would certainly move the party.

      • Meganbot2000 says:

Nonsense. Anyone who thinks a Christmas party is to “celebrate staff” has obviously never been to a Christmas party.

It’s borderline inappropriate for bosses to attend an employee party anyway. Only if the boss is very casual might that be okay. Who actually wants their boss at their office Christmas party? Who wants their boss to see them hammered on cheap wine, photocopying their bum, getting off with someone, and doing bad karaoke?

Forcing the staff to reschedule their party just to suit the Cambridges would be a horrible selfish thing to do, and certainly would have led to them being slammed in the press.

      • Nic919 says:

This is totally made up nonsense. I have been to several law firm parties from firms with over a hundred lawyers to firms with under ten and at all of them the partners, who are the bosses, show up for part of it. Suggesting they don’t need to show up at all is just a poor attempt at excusing rudeness.

    • Nic919 says:

A nativity play isn’t Hamlet. There would have been time to do both. Many regular parents balance more than that on a daily basis.

  9. Summer says:

Even if they were never scheduled to attend, it’s pretty crappy to miss the holiday party. These staffers work for the foundation all year long, the least they can do is share a toast and shake some hands for half an hour. And it’s good for morale!

  10. Karen says:

They should have stopped by the staff holiday party.

    • Nic919 says:

I agree. The meeting may have been just for Harry’s work, but not showing up to the party looks bad. And if there was a nativity play, they weren’t going to be at the school for hours. Those plays are also during the school day, since the kids are so young, so there would have been time for a quick appearance. Both events were scheduled months in advance and arrangements could be made. When they want to, they can make themselves available for more than one thing but they just didn’t prioritize the staff party.

  11. Princessk says:

There is no way these four are going to appear in public together before Xmas. Everybody will just have to wait for the church walk.

  12. AprilMay says:

This story came about from the Court Circular. Meghan and Harry were in it for these engagement and the Cambridges weren’t. The reporter then used that to make a story fitting the current “fued” stories.
Not surprising that Meghan didn’t attend the meeting part, as she doesn’t have any charities yet. No need for her to be there when she wouldn’t be a part of any discussion.

  13. Rosie says:

Most staff parties I’ve been to were better without the bosses.

  14. Vi says:

It’s fascinating how for some people Harry has become the textbook case of “hardworking royal”,whatever the word work means for them, when even with his tour, his numbers don’t equal his brother’s numbers, and his numbers are never been anything to brag about compared to his brother’s low numbers.
At least the brother, who is still the lazy one,is considerably stepping up.

    • Nic919 says:

As of last month there was a difference of about ten engagements between Harry and William. And in 2017, his first “full time” year, he didn’t do much more than in 2016.
William still needs to double his numbers to even get close to Anne, Andrew and Edward, who all rank well below him.

  15. Meganbot2000 says:

Occam’s Razor: The Cambridges were never scheduled to appear, there’s no drama, no one leaked anything to the press, the press simply noticed the Sussexes had attended a Royal Foundation event without the Cambridges and decided to spin it into a story.

The obsession with “leaking” is very weird. I worked in the press and now work in the entertainment industry with many people and on projects that get a lot of press coverage. An awful lot of negative press stories is simply made up, or sold by random underlings wanting to make a bit of cash. Actual “leaks” are rare. If anyone here was British or had worked for a British paper they’d know how unlikely it is either the Cambridges or the Sussexes are leaking these stories to the press themselves.

    • Shannon says:

^^^ this. I am honestly surprised how seriously this stuff gets taken.

    • KatV says:

You’re so right. Living in a monarchy myself (Denmark) there’s no chance in h… they would sell themselves out like this. Most stories are simply made up, and I’m not sure if Americans (ok, some might 😉 ) completely understand the role of royalty. They’re not celebrities, you know.

  16. Lizounette says:

I LOVE Kate’s look here. I don’t care who she’s “copying” she always looks great IMO! Granted, I’d like to see more photos of her shopping. Heh.
