Nancy Pelosi’s ‘coat of righteousness’ is being reissued by Max Mara

Schumer and Pelosi Meet Press at the White House

On Tuesday, Nancy Pelosi burned Donald Trump and walked out of the White House like a boss. Pelosi was badass in the Oval Office meeting with Trump, and then she continued to own him in interviews following the meeting. Pelosi’s White House exit strut became a hilarious meme about her righteousness and general badassery. It was a perfect storm, really: after so men turned into spineless cowards in Trump’s presence, there was a 78-year-old woman who defied him openly and called him out on his bullsh-t.

Of course wanted to know the designer ID for her Autumnal Coat of Righteousness. It was part of the meme – Nancy Pelosi strutting out of the White House in her heels and her funnel-neck coat. Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins was even writing love letters to/about the coat. As it turns out, the Max Mara coat has been in Pelosi’s closet for a while – the coat is from the 2013 collection. And after the coat became a viral sensation, Max Mara has decided to reissue it!!! OMG.

The Times was also one of the first to correctly identify the maker of the coat: Max Mara. This wasn’t fresh-off-the-runway, just-hit-stores Max Mara, though—Pelosi’s burnt-red style dates back to 2013. In order to authentically get the House Minority look, you’d have to dig deep into the resale market, scouring the eBay’s, Tradesy’s, and TheRealReal’s of the world to buy the Glamis coat.

Except that late Wednesday afternoon, the Italian fashion house sent out a press release that not only confirmed the origins of Pelosi’s coat but also announced that Max Mara would be reinstating the Glamis into its outerwear collection in 2019. “In a variety of colorways,” no less! A spokesperson for the brand confirmed to Glamour that the decision to bring it back was inspired by Pelosi.

Ian Griffiths, the creative director of Max Mara, issued a statement on the Pelosi sighting too: “You develop an emotional relationship with a coat like nothing else in your wardrobe. I can imagine why Ms. Pelosi chose to wear it for this important moment, and I’m honored.”

The year is 2018 and the fashion world changed directions on a dime because a powerful and righteous 78-year-old woman owned a fascist and then walked away in a fabulous coat.

Sometimes I love 2018, because of this:

I’m really loving this, and the memes were great.

I’ve been a Nancy Pelosi apologist for years. So glad I can finally come out of the closet. She is intelligent, poised and always well prepared. Love her.

    • Relli80 says:

Me too… I always tell me husband she is exactly that kind of older woman I want to be.

    • Nicnack says:

She definitely gets a bad rap. I have seen her in conferences. She is beyond formidable and her style is always on point. The newbies should study at her knee before she retires. Her in CA she is all about grooming women. They should take note.

  5. Busyann says:

    I AM buying this coat.
Does anyone have an ID on her sunnies?

  6. Lara says:

Now I know what to get my mother for Christmas next year

  8. bettyrose says:

Can we talk about her sunglasses, tho? She’s like ‘excuse me while I shield my eyes from that burn.’

  9. minx says:

    She always looks fabulous.

I’m so glad that Pelosi could school the incoming freshman congresswoman on how it’s done. She’s been having to fight a building narrative that she’s was an” old school partisan politician” that’s seen better times.
Ha! Pelosi is exactly the kind of Boss we need to take down Trump. I predict history is going look very favorably on her leadership in field of very few that could stand up to the moronic, wanna be dictator.

    • Lilly (with the double L) says:

I agree and it’s so ingrained in me to respect my elders that I get uncomfortable with elder bashing, purely based on newer is better. Any woman with the endurance and knowledge she has is my idol for strength and not giving up. I’m glad there’s new blood, of course, and I hope they make time to learn from mentors.

Max mara coats are pure beauty.
I have two and a trench coat. They are worth every single penny.
I think I will ask to be buried in one of them.

    • Dara says:

I have yearned for a Max Mara coat for a very long time.

    • Nibbi says:

I have wanted one for a long time as well. They have the most beautiful colors and a consistently low-key, classy, understated elegance that I like.

  12. Jay says:

I dislike following celeb fashion trends and almost never have (except Mindy Kaling wore a great yellow pea coat once and I bought it immediately and loved it), but…..I will buy this coat.

  13. MarcelMarcel says:

I wish we weren’t having to deal with this dystopia. However I am grateful that a professional woman is being praised so highly that her outerwear is being reissued. Especially since Trump treats women like trophies and is too stupid to see their worth. He definitely isn’t inspiring major designers to rerelease anything.

That funnel neck is the best! It is a great coat.

” Red is the color of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire, and love. Red is a very emotionally intense color. ” she probably wore it to send a message. I believe she did.

That was the first thing that stood out when I read the news. That fabulous coat! Who needs SJP and her show when you have Nancy P?
