Sandra Oh & Andy Samberg preview their hosting gig for Sunday’s Golden Globes

Mitt Romney Gathering on Primary Eve

How big of a deal is it that Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh are cohosting the Emmys? I was pleased with the news, and I appreciate the fact that an Asian woman is going to be front and center at arguably the second biggest Hollywood awards show. But I also appreciate the fact that most people didn’t make Oh’s race an issue, or that they didn’t even see it as notable – Sandra Oh is extremely talented and funny, and no one feels like this is tokenism whatsoever. Anyway, Sandra and Andy cover the latest issue of The Hollywood Reporter, and this is just a preview for Sunday night’s activities. Yes, the Globes are happening on Sunday. WAKE UP! We’re going to have fun. You can read the THR piece here. Some highlights:

On the liquor-fueled partying at the Globes:
Oh:
They’re just drinking, they’re not eating. They’re just drinking. I feel like people want to get to the party more quickly at the Globes.

Samberg: A lot of people get to the party at the Globes. Which is nice. It makes for a looser atmosphere. My hope is that you have so much goodwill that we’re just going to skate by. And I will be your lapdog.

Oh on politics & hosting: “Yeah, and the job of being a host, it’s really to be there to support all the nominees and those who take that platform to say whatever they want. I don’t really think that [getting political] is for the hosts necessarily. You make it an open and safe place for whoever wants to use that platform to speak.

On Oprah & Meryl:
Samberg:
The most memorable moments from the last two years of the Globes have been the DeMille speeches, Meryl Streep and Oprah Winfrey.

Oh: Oh, so good. So good, so good. Those two women really understand the power of that platform and took it and opened up a lot. That’s who deserves that kind of award, not only for the work that they’ve done but how they display themselves and their character.

Oh doesn’t want to get into detailed political comedy: “No, I don’t think I could do that. I don’t think it’s shallow to 1) have fun and 2) be honestly celebratory. Just the fact that I’m f–king up there is crazy-pants in a great way. And I’m not interested in [talking about Trump] at all. What I’m interested in is pointing to actual real change. I want to focus on that ’cause people can pooh-pooh Hollywood all they want — and there is a lot to pooh-pooh, sure — but we also make culture. How many gazillions of people have seen Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians? That changes things. Just speaking for my own community, people cried a lot in [Crazy Rich Asians], and it’s not only because it’s a great story and a classic romantic comedy — it is because seeing yourself reflected onscreen is really emotional when you don’t even know that you’re carrying so much grief of never being seen.

I forgot that the best parts of the past two Globes ceremonies were Meryl and Oprah. Remember Meryl’s speech? It was so good that Trump had a meltdown on Twitter about it the next morning. And Oprah’s speech last year was incredible. As for Sandra and Andy… I hope they’re cute together. This joint interview was cute, but we’ll see.

I love Sandra (and Andy’s pretty great too) so I really wish I still had any interest in watching awards shows! 😁

Basically I watch the red carpet on mute to see the fashion (or follow the photos online) and then go to bed. The next day I catch any highlight clips on replay. I just can’t sit through watching phony, meaningless awards being taken seriously for 3 or 4 hours anymore. Sigh…I’m getting older…or maybe just wiser. 😉

Same, I can’t devote hours to these shows. I dip in and out, see who the winners are online and the fashion postmortem the next day. I do think the Golden Globes are more fun, It’s the first big awards show of the season. And it’s a twofer, awarding television too. I never watch the Oscars anymore, just don’t care that much.

They also save the big awards until the last thing at night, which may be OK if you are on California time, but tough for East Coasters to maintain interest that late! I usually go to bed and wait a day to read who won, and see the outfits on the internet. (Celebitchy!)

Minx, my comment above was about the Oscars, sorry!
