Sam Elliott on his first Oscar nomination: It’s about f’ing time

I saw A Star is Born a couple of days ago. The movie is disjointed with a vague timeline, I didn’t connect with the characters and didn’t find the romance believable. There were moments that were supposed to be serious which made me laugh out loud (like this one). I fail to see how it got a Best Picture nomination. If you liked it I’m sorry! It’s “not like a horrible movie that made me want to die” to quote Kaiser’s mediocre take on Green Book. There were definitely moving scenes that stood out, like one in which Allie first sings to Jack and almost every scene with Jack’s brother, Bobby, played by Sam Elliott.

Elliott, 74, definitely deserved his Oscar nomination. (Sidenote: how is Sam Elliott 74? I thought he was ten years younger than that at least.) He thinks so too! This is Elliott’s first Oscar nomination and he joked to Deadline about how it’s been a long time coming.

“I think the thing off the top of my head might be, ‘It’s about f*cking time,’” jokes Sam Elliott, in the wake of his first ever Oscar nomination this morning for his supporting role in Warner Bros’ A Star Is Born. “Beyond that, it’s really about the work; it’s just about the creative process. It’s great to be recognized for that, that’s really all it’s about.”

Asked why he felt A Star is Born – this is its fourth incarnation – resonated so strongly with so many, Elliott said, “I just think it has a number of universal themes that a lot of people can tap into. The music’s one thing, that stands alone on some level, but it’s also an intricate part of the story. The love story, the love and loss. Then beyond that, it’s the addiction theme. I don’t know anybody that hasn’t had some connection, either directly or indirectly, someone in their family, or someone they love, with alcoholism or addiction. It’s just one one of the things we live with today. I think the combination of all those factors is what people have responded to.”

[From Deadline via People]

Deadline mentions Elliott’s very long history in film, from 1969’s Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid to The Big Lebowski and TV roles on Justified and Grace and Frankie. (How was he not on Deadwood?!) He’s just so recognizable and iconic that it’s hard to believe this is his first nomination.

Elliott made a good point on the addiction theme in the movie. I was really confused by how the scenes were haphazardly put together. My boyfriend’s theory is that Cooper structured ASIB to show how the lead character’s addiction made everything chaotic, similar to how Oliver Stone structured The Doors, but not as well done. As an alcoholic, parts were hard to watch as they did nail so many aspects of alcoholism. I felt disgusted by how Jack was pissing everything away, so on that level it worked.

Elliott, by playing the brother of Cooper’s character and genuinely caring for him, made us care for him too. The entire movie may not have hung together for me, but Elliott’s character was a standout. He deserves this Oscar, although I wouldn’t be mad if Mahershala Ali won it either. Also, can we get some photos of Regina King posing with Elliott at the Oscars please?

    Yeah Sam!!!

  2. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Haven’t seen it yet because I’ll probably feel like Kaiser. I know I will lol.

Have to add he def deserves recognition. Way overdue.

  3. H says:

He does deserve that Oscar. He’s my mom’s favorite actor, so I’ve probably seen every movie and television show he’s ever been in. And if you didn’t see him on Grace and Frankie the man still looks fine at 74 with his shirt off. (Yes, I’m totally being shallow).

    • BengalCat😻 says:

I first noticed him in Roadhouse and seeing him and John Doe (from X) perform together turned my teenage loins to jelly, rowr!

  4. Tiffany says:

The lack of award recognition for Road House still bothers me.

    I said what I said.

    • H says:

@Tiffany, Sam was a long, tall glass of water in that movie. While I adore Patrick Swayze, I watched Roadhouse for Sam Elliott.

    • meh says:

God, he was sexy in that movie. I actually just saw it on AMC this week for the 1st time.

    • Usedtobe says:

Haven’t seen it in years. I am now actively searching where I can watch it.

    • brutalethyl says:

I’ve been absolutely in love (or lust lol) with Sam Elliot for probably 40 years now, but I couldn’t ever sit through Roadhouse. I thought it was one of the worst movies Sam Elliot’s ever been in. It’s right next to the one where he played a life guard for crappy Sam movies, IMO.

      Let the hazing begin! 🙂

      • KidV says:

LOL! It’s not a great movie but I still have to watch it if I come across it flipping through channels. Sam Elliott makes it better.

I remember seeing Sam in all sorts of TV shows growing up, but it wasn’t until Mask that it finally clicked on how gorgeous he was. And that voice! I was only 22 and that was the first time I was attracted an older man. He’s the same age as my dad.

    • dumbledork says:

      You’re so right.

  5. French girl says:

    Glorious mustache

    • Steff says:

And strong eyebrow game. Do you think he dyes them? Of course not!

    • AMAyson1977 says:

He looks like my dad, down to the white hair and mustache and the dark eyebrows. (Dad also enjoys his denim, which contributes too, I think!) I adore him and hope he wins, although I had/have no desire to see ASIB. He elevates everything he’s in, and I’m glad to know that he is a wonderful human being in addition to being a compelling performer.

  6. CROWHOOD says:

I have A real gross out tic with moustaches. Like I cant Look at them without physically feeling sick. Somehow, I want To makeout dramatically with him and his stache!!!!

    • brutalethyl says:

I can’t think of a better way to get over your mustache thing than having a hot night with Sam Elliot. 🙂

  7. xdanix says:

He absolutely deserves to win, though I think the fact that his role is small (and genuinely “supporting” rather than someone like Ali who is ABSOLUTELY a co-lead and committing pretty egregious category fraud right there) will hurt his chances. I wish he had been in ASIB more- he and BCoop were fantastic together and I would really have liked to see their complicated relationship explored more, I thought it was one of the most interesting dynamics in the movie.

  8. Lala11_7 says:

The REAL love story in the movie…is between Bradley and Sam…THAT’S where all the chemistry and real emotions are…

    • a reader says:

Agreed. The ‘romantic’ relationship was toxic but the brotherly love…. Sam broke my heart in that movie and I am so glad he got nominated.

  9. Usedtobe says:

Thank you for your review of ASIB.
I thought it was great but since the Golden Globes something about it has been bothering me and yesterday it came to me, the love story seemed so forced and unreal. I didn’t find it a believable ‘once in a lifetime’ or ‘love of my love’ sort of love story. I can’t believe it took me 2 months to realize this but that’s what it came down to. The singing and the performing were wonderful but that love story did nothing for me.

    • Amelie says:

Yeah same here. I get Jackson had to meet Ally somehow but to just randomly go to a bar on the side of the highway (?) and see her sing at a drag queen bar and just fall head over heels for her just from watching her sing and barely knowing her… Also Ally just going along with the weird guy who says weird things just because he punched another guy on her behalf. The whole thing was really unbelievable. I haven’t watched the other ASIB versions so I don’t know if the previous incarnations had more believable first encounters for the characters. The whole setup was not great. I liked the movie for what it was but I do not feel it is Oscar worthy apart from the music (that first song during the intro really made me feel like I was a rock concert!).

  10. Dttimes2 says:

Yes i would still Sam…anywhere anytime. God he is like a fine wine gets better with time and ticks all my cowboy fantasy boxes. ❤

    • Still_Sarah says:

I agree with Kaiser : How was he not on Deadwood?! I remember seeing him in Buffalo Girls with Anjelica Huston and thinking he was MADE for westerns. That being said, I’ve been a fan of his since Lifeguard (1976) – I was young but I had good taste!

  11. Rosie says:

He had been married to Katherine Ross for 35 years!! I hope he wins.

    • Tiffany says:

Whatever happened to Katherine Ross. How is it her career did not blow up after The Graduate.

    • holly hobby says:

Yes I was going to say he’s married to THE Katerine Ross. I do remember her from the Dynasty spin off – the Colbys.

    • Steff says:

Katherine is so beautiful. The last time I saw her in a movie was Donnie Darko.

    • North of Boston says:

Yes! She and he are both fantastic, and they are even more fantastic because they are together!

One thing that makes following his career difficult: he is so good, and so desirable, that he keeps getting hired for projects so his characters get killed off on his previous projects.
Or maybe that’s just been my luck watching a few things where his character gets killed off, only to find that he’s popped up somewhere new. (I won’t say where his characters die, just in case it might spoil someone)

  12. Specialp says:

    I swoon for Sam Elliot!!

  13. Michel says:

    Sexiest voice ever!! 😍😍😍

  14. Dee says:

I’ll admit, I had absolutely no interest in this movie, but I also did not know Sam Elliot was in it! So I guess I’ll have to watch. And I don’t care how old he is, this man is DAMN fine, and I so would in a different lifetime.

All that said, I ended up watching the first season of the god awful Ranch show with Ashton Kutcher. Sam was the only bearable part of the show, but wasn’t worth watching after finding out about Danny Masterson’s rapey ways. *Shudder*.

  15. Marianne says:

He did not “definitely” deserve his nomination. He did not transform that role. He just sounds and acts like himself in ASIB.

  16. paddingtonjr says:

Give this man an Oscar, if only so we can hear his wonderfully sexy, gravelly voice while gazing at that hunk of a man and his gorgeous hair! Seriously, he is a great, underrated actor who makes everything he’s in better. I’ve had a bit of a crush on him since Mask in 1985 while my contemporaries were mooning over Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe. He even made this long-time vegetarian look forward to his “Beef – It’s What’s for Dinner” commercials” 😉

I saw ASIB when it first came out and thought it was an okay remake, not the best but certainly not horrible. I didn’t care for the chaotic pacing, but I get what BCoop was going for. Lady Gaga was okay; the romance, however, was forced and unbelievable. I would have liked to see more Sam Elliott (note to directors: more Sam Elliott is never a bad thing!!).

Happy Friday everyone! Enjoy these pictures of young/old, mustache/no mustache Sam:

  17. Bahare says:

Love Sam Elliot but when I first saw the picture of the 3 of them my first thought was what is Barry Manilow doing with gaga and Sam? Never thought Bradley Cooper was that hot but had a certain low level bad boy vibe. But look how much hotter Sam is letting himself age naturally. All of these fillers and lasers do make you look less wrinkled but they Don’t make you look better.

    • Still_Sarah says:

Yes, Barry Manilow about sums up Cooper’s look in that photo. I wasn’t sure who it was either when I first saw it!

  18. Snowflake says:

Love Lady Gaga’s coat! It is about time for Sam, he’s a phenomenal actor

  19. Shabs says:

Is it just me that’s totally unimpressed with his acting? Thought he was roetty terrible in A Star is born and a non entity in grace and frankie

  20. Anna says:

I won’t be watching this because Gaga is cancelled in my book due to her work with R.Kelly but that said, I absolutely adore Sam Elliott! So amazing in everything he does. Remembering the interview Regina King did on Jimmy Kimmel when she gushed about meeting him!

  21. Silent Star says:

Why is Liberace standing with Sam and Lady Gaga in the first picture?

  22. Sonia says:

Oh Sam-he was delicious in Mask *sigh*

  23. launicaangelina says:

I love Sam Elliott! I have no dog in this race, but I’d like to see him win.

  24. vava says:

He is a great guy. He has a house up here in Oregon and we see him around and about from time to time. He’s always very friendly with people. I’ve met him and he’s so kind.

  25. Mustang Sally says:

He was also glorious in “Fatal Beauty” opposite Whoopi Goldberg. Moustache, cool car & gravelly voice…I am smitten to this day!
