Another CGI mess.
And they STOLE the opening scene of the trailer from the movie Prince of Persia. It is the exact same scene where Jake Gyllenhall evades his captors in the marketplace. I have that movie on DVD and have watched it many times. Aladdin is using the same scene exactly.
@Still_sarah no, they didn’t. They followed the market chase sequence of the animated Aladdin…
That’s the classic opening scene of the original Aladdin.
totally agree. why overdo everything so much that it becomes ridiculous. Some old -school movie-making magic with less computer input is truly welcome every now and again.
I miss Robin.
The CGI looks awful, considering Disney has Lucas Films, Marvel, Pixar at their disposal, why is it so bad?
i thought the same thing about ready player one. i think it is b/c it is a bunch of old dudes who can’t be edited or critiqued get free rein
And the Autotune. Good lord, the Autotune!
As much as Disney nails the crowd pleasers, they are touch and go on special effects. Jungle Book looked incredible, Rogue One too, but for example as wonderful a film as Black Panther was (and beautifully designed), the CGI rendering was mostly terrible! Disney is not consistent on this aspect at all.
The same reason for the disparity between Black Panther’s and Infinity War’s VE. People and money get spent/assigned elsewhere when you have 3+ VE intensive films to put out each year.
Leaving aside that the original is set in China, is this the only story we can tell about Arabic, North African, or Persian people? Is there nothing else in the literary cannon? [sarcasm]
Wow, Kim Kardashian is really committing to being a part of prison reform and rehabilitation. No snark, even if it’s for publicity she’s making a real difference for that man.
OOF. Hard pass.
It lost me at Will Smith.
He plays the same over the top character in almost everything. Takes you right out of the movie.
Yup. No no no no no. Aladdin was my all time favorite in 1991. This looks horrible.
Looks terrible.
Why did it need to be made? I don’t think it looks good at all. Will Smith can only do Will Smith in the parts he picks, with only a few exceptions to that rule.
Will Smith as Fresh Prince! Fresh Prince shoots Aliens! Fresh Prince shoots aliens again! Fresh Prince gives dating advice! Fresh Prince as a fish! Fresh Prince combats crime! Fresh Prince commits the crimes! Fresh Prince as Genie!
Blue Will Smith still looks really questionable. Which I find so strange…I find the CGI and motion capture in Marvel films to be quite well done at this point. Marvel is part of Disney. How is there such a discrepancy?
Aladdin and Jasmine look and sound great, at least.
Aladdin’s singing voice was much weaker than Jasmine’s.
I don’t know why they decided to only make Will blue sometimes, but I like it.
#NotmyAladdin
It’s so cheap and bad looking. It looks like something like a B-grade TV movie from the 90’s with “exotic” pseudo Arab/Indian mishmash.
It’s cringe worthy.
HARD PASS.
+1
I actually think this looks so much better than the teaser trailer made it look. Some of the jokes were funny. I am open to this
We might need a table for two because I agree with you even though we seem to be in the minority. I think it looks pretty good.
no thanks
I don’t like the guy that plays Aladdin. Aladdin is way cuter BUT the opening sequence for the trailer reminds me of the old Nintendo game. So I’m sold. Already. Not sure how they’re gonna get the younger crowd interested. if I had a kid I would be watching cartoon Aladdin to get them familiar because we would be going opening weekend for the live action.
I don’t have high hopes because Guy Ritchie directed it.
Exactly. He’s an awful, terrible director. UNCLE, King Arthur, and Sherlock Holmes had his usual awful stylistic elements. But the film doesn’t look as bad as expected and he’d have gotten a lot of “handholding” from producers as it’s a Disney film.
It doesn’t look as bad as expected but Will Smith is jarring as usual with his constant homie act. The songs sound exactly the same. Why didn’t they switch them up a bit or include some new songs? Lazy and playing it safe!
It’s a virtually unknown cast and then BAM…Will Smith. Looks better than what I expected, but it’s just….meh.
It is all over the place because of the director… Guy’s movies have been like that for years now. Terrible. Blue Will Smith? OK…
IDK I don’t think it looks terrible?
I don’t think it looks terrible, but if Guy Ritchie does one of those “People explain the plan, while the action takes place” shots again after filling King Arthur with them, I may just walk out of the theater.
After the William’s performance, I really can’t blame Will Smith for playing it straight. Sure, it’s basically his charming “Will Smith” performance, but the role really doesn’t call for much more if your not going the William’s route. I enjoyed Naomi Scott in Power Rangers and I’d be shocked if her career doesn’t take off more after this. She’s visually stunning and a good enough actor that the right prominent role in a good enough movie would catapult her into the limelight. She could also probably use the cred and insert herself somewhere in one of Disney’s many franchises. The next phase of the MCU/Star Wars more than likely has a leading lady role she could fit into.
Edit: Spoke too soon. Scott has the reboot of Charlie’s Angels coming out this year. Her team needs to try to line up some indie/studio awards contender roles for her while the iron is hot.
Also, thank goodness that they didn’t autotune them to death like they did Emma Watson. That was tragic.
Oh Dear! …….I’m sure I’ve seen dozens of movies just like (probably better than) this made in the 40’s and 50’s…… Perhaps they should just digitize up a copy of ‘The Thief of Bagdad’ and release it theatres instead. Maybe a double bill with ‘The Son of Ali Baba’
The American accents are death to the movie, so very jarring. #aladdinisnotamerican
Meh. I really don’t like the live action Disney movies. I guess they’re for older kids? One thing that is a huge relief to me is that kids will be raised on Disney movies like Brave, Frozen, Moana, Coco, etc. instead of Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast… I hope we live in an era one day where princess cleavage is out. Sorry, but young boys and girls so do not need these harmful ‘only boys are heroes’ and overtly sexualized ‘damsel in distress’ narratives and visuals in films. It feels really dated to re-make these movies to me? I thought Disney was trying to evolve some. The CGI looks cheesy to me.
