Jennifer Garner’s April Fool’s joke is a memoir called Bless Your Heart

The Art of Elysium's 12th Annual Celebration - Heaven
Yesterday, on April Fool’s Day, Jennifer Garner announced that she has a memoir out called Bless Your Heart. The fact that it has such a jokey name and that she announced it April first made a lot of people assume it was a prank and not real. In a video accompanying the book she says “it’s a real labor of love and I go places that I never thought that I would. I just want to thank everyone who was part of helping me write and create this book.” She did update the post with the news that it was an April Fool’s joke, which was given away by the fact that the top of the fake book cover said “Foreward by therapist.”

She kind of gave it away with that video before she even wrote the update but it was a cute idea. I wonder if she’s testing the waters though. I don’t peg her for a tell-all author but I bet she could write a parenting book full of anecdotes and ideas. She’s into crafting and we know she loves baking and cooking. I wouldn’t be surprised if she put out a cookbook either. She can pretty much write whatever she wants and have it be successful and she knows that. Fame is a platform for whatever you want to do.

As for the title, this is what she told Vanity Fair when she was asked about Ben’s giant phoenix back tattoo. She said “bless his heart”, which is southern for “f-k you” (my words but a lot of people agree). This is before Ben claimed it was fake (it wasn’t but he never admitted he lied about it). I imagine there are a quite a few topics to which Garner would respond “bless your heart.”

this one got me and I was sad it wasn’t real haha.

    • Jerusha says:

She fooled almost everyone, including a lot of her famous friends, going by her IG.

Me too. There aren’t too many autobiographies of celebs I’d want to read these days (although I am always hoping and praying Nigella Lawson will write one), but I would definitely pick up Jennifer Garner’s. I was bummed this was a joke.

  2. Agenbiter says:

    Better characterization:
‘to express to someone that they are an idiot without saying such harsh words’

  3. Mia4s says:

OK April Fools Day is 99.99% garbage, but this is pretty funny. Props to Garner for this one.

  4. LT says:

Total props to her for this – clever joke and great use of a funny Southern expression.

I agree with Agenbiter on the translation – though it’s used less frequently to tell someone to their face that they are an idiot than it is used to tell someone ELSE that someone is an idiot, without actually saying that.

  5. Lisa says:

This was funny and I wish it had been real.

  6. Lena says:

She actually got a lot of people who know her who thought it was real -even given the date and jokey title. Reese Witherspoon, Sara foster, Juliette Lewis etc. I for one would read a memoir of hers, but I’m sure she and old Ben have a divorce agreement not to go there.

” I imagine there are quite a few topics to which Garner would respond ” bless ,your heart.”
OMG so true! And what a polite yet great way of phasing it!
I take that phrase to mean that you are stupid or otherwise impaired but God bless you, you can’t help it. It is a way of trying to stay nice &not wanting to sound mean & ugly.
Maybe when their children are all grown, she would write a book. One thing for sure, it would probably make for some reading!

  8. Case says:

I thought it was real! I assume most people DON’T play April Fool’s pranks and took it at face value, especially since her famous friends congratulated her, lol. Good one.

  9. Jb says:

I wish she would! I figured it was a joke but hoped she’d spill the dirt. I know she annoys a lot of ppl on here but I like her and hoping she finds happiness sans Ben. She’ll always be Sydney Bristow to me …

  10. My3cents says:

That’s actually a pretty great title, too bad she used it as a joke. Judging from all the positive responses I’m guessing it will happen.

  11. Mumbles says:

She and Reese should have a Southern-off. (“I do declare!” “Fiddle dee Dee, would you like some sweet tea?”) It’s a little much.

    • Lena says:

Nothing wrong with being from the south. As it is non southerners should stay away from bless your heart so as not to use it inappropriately. And It sometimes is used sincerely as in “My car broke down and I got fired today” Answer: “Oh, bless your heart!”

    • Kebbie says:

It’s kind of like when people say a woman is acting like she’s the first person to ever be pregnant, Reese is a little like the first person to ever be southern. Whiskey in a teacup and sundresses and towels that say y’all, it’s all a little much. Jennifer is more genuine, though that’s probably because she’s not trying to commercialize it.

  12. Dora says:

Her black and white photo on the cover is gorgeous. I think her life story would been an interesting novel.

  13. Kebbie says:

Joining Instagram is the best thing she ever did. I don’t follow her or anything but when I do occasionally see her stuff, she’s very likable. She used to get on my nerves but I actually like her now.
