Vanessa Hudgens on fitness: ‘Try new things. One thing will resonate with you’

Since I’ve been using YouTube to find celebrity interviews there are two channels I’m consistently impressed with. One is of course Busy Tonight which is sadly leaving E! after this season but will hopefully be picked up by another network. The other is Access Live with Kit Hoover and Scott Evans. Somehow they always get good quotes from guests and just like Busy they’re so enthusiastic it’s contagious. Plus they’re fun to watch. They have a new interview with Vanessa Hudgens promoting her partnerships with Propel Water and Avia. She talks about her fitness approach and makes it sound kind of attainable but then you see her body. She’s young and peppy but she’s also committed. She had some good advice about working out with your friends too.

Are you a runner, what do you do to work out?
I’m tried and true with my Soulcycle, pilates and yoga. I know what works for me. I just keep that up constantly.

What is [one fitness tip you would give]?
Try new things. There’s so many types of fitness for everyone. One thing will resonate with you. Then find a group of friends to do it with. That’s my favorite thing, getting my girlfriends together and going and doing a class together. Then you have someone to hold you accountable. Enjoy it. It can be a fun thing.

Also another fun thing for working out is get fitness clothes, althleisure that you’re into. I designed [a collection] for Avia. It’s so amazing when you put on fitness clothes.

She’s busting her butt, she’s not messing around. She’s previously said that her diet alternates between intermittent fasting and keto, which sounds punishing actually but that’s what works for her. As for working out with other people, I love going to Zumba classes and I’ve gotten close some of the women there as we’ve been working out together for years. I can tell them anything and there’s a real camaraderie in class. Some people don’t going to classes at the gym though, they can definitely be loud and crowded. It’s hard enough for me to find one friend who will show up and work out with me, so I don’t know if I could find a group other than at a class already but that would be awesome. I also like what she said about finding what works for you. Too many people think of workouts as punishment or a chore and make excuses. I get that it’s not everyone’s thing, but it doesn’t have to be boring or tedious. That’s why I love dance fitness particularly.

Here’s her interview. She’s so adorable, I feel like I’ve watched her grow up.

Oh and she had a Lord of The Rings-themed 30th birthday party last December. She also said she’s into Game of Thrones too but isn’t caught up. Kit and Scott said the last couple of episodes were horrible so she shouldn’t bother. As I said I like them!

Kit was on the first ever season of MTV’s Road Rules back in the day (like, waaaaay back) and I’ve loved her ever since. She is so genuine and enthusiastic; it’s contagious.

She is SO right-finding something you love and getting a good understanding of it, as well as having fun fitness clothes, makes you want to work out. Most of my fitness clothes are either Hufflepuff or feminist themed, but they make me feel good!

I LOVE lifting interspersed with cardio-I started with HIIT and MetCon and very structured classes and have moved out on my own, using the moves and processes I learned to design workouts that I enjoy and can use to destress-I find myself spending more and more time working out because it feels great. I am pushing myself harder and finding muscles I didn’t know existed (my tricep has started popping lately and I’m stoked!).
I’ll probably never be thin, but I’m so much healthier than I was two years ago (my fit-versary is in two days), and hauling my 65 lb kiddo up the stairs if he falls asleep is no longer a challenge that leaves me gasping for air.

It’s much easier to stick to an exercise regime when your focus isn’t appearance, or so I’ve found!

I stick to things like dance and farm chores because I truly enjoy them, I love how I can express myself creatively with dance (and costumes!!) and I love being around rescued animals and the outdoors so lugging around giant bales of hay and heavy buckets of water is actually something I look forward to doing

That’s so true!! The minute the thought “I’m not really losing like I’d like, my thighs could be smaller…” I switch the focus back to focusing on my running goals, increasing speed, having better form in lifting, end getting in 10k steps every day by walking to the store, running around and playing tag with my 4 year old, gardening, and make sure I never laze out on dragging the refuse bins around. I move every chance I get and feel SO good and strong! No gym member ship either, just do what I can work resistance bands and hand weights at home with early morning runs before the husband goes to work.

I’m happier and healthier than I think I’ve ever been!

The fact that she had a Lord of the Rings birthday party makes me REALLY like her, lol. That’s so cool.

It’s very true that you need to find what works for you in order to enjoy exercise. And some cute workout outfits!

I do hot yoga and I love it but I don’t want to be around friends for it and feel kind of grinchy for not being more friendly in class but it’s my time to completely check out from life and just focus on me. I don’t really want to share that with anyone else no matter how much I like them.

Friends will say let’s do a yoga class together and I’m yeah, no lol.

I like going with friends because it makes me more likely to show up. Sometimes if it is just me – i will find an excuse to bail.

When I show up solo, I don’t LOVE chit chatting with strangers before class. Sometimes I’m just in the zone too

She is a terrible judge on So You Think You Can Dance but hearing what Harvey Weinstein did to her when she was still just a kid made me feel very bad for her. (Still wish she’d be better on SYTYCD tho!)

She is SO RIGHT about having cute workout clothes to inspire you. If you have a Plato’s Closet or Style Encore around you, check there first! Racks and racks of brand-name athleisure all sorted by size, and they only buy clothes in great condition so there’s no trash!
