Zoey Deutch: ‘I actually feel like my superpower is my anxiety’

Nov-digital-cover_FINAL
Actress Zoey Deutch is currently starring on Netflix’s The Politician and in the just-released Zombieland: Double Tap. She is the daughter of Back to the Future‘s Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch (Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful). Zoey is on the cover of the November issue of Cosmopolitan. She spent an afternoon with reporter Kate Williams, and they seemed to have an easy rapport. Zoey also did a fun photoshoot in a grocery store. She talked about her love of dogs, the fact that her parents didn’t give her any advice for working in show business, living with anxiety, and more. The article was a fun read (as is the video of Zoey trying to guess which out of a pair of items is the more expensive one). Here are some highlights:

On her pitbull, Maybelle, whom she adopted four years ago, and has honored with two tattoos and a necklace:
“It was literally love at first sight. I saw her and I was like, This is God in dog form. I’ve never seen anything so good in my life. We do not deserve this creature . . .”

On being a “wreck”:
“Oh my god, I’m a wreck . . . . I was like, Get your shit together and look like a decent human being . . . . Don’t be late. Pee before. Get your hair done.”

On her anxiety:
“I came into this world with anxiety . . . . I used to hold my breath from anxiety when I was a baby and it would make me faint. There are times when it’s debilitating, and there are times when it makes me laugh, like in the car today when I lost the plot entirely. But I actually feel like my superpower is my anxiety. It’s one of my key motivators, and it’s at the center of my ambition.”

On her fear of a quarter-life crisis:
“I think I’m nearing it…or in it. . . . There’s nothing I can do. I just have to ride the wave. I fully have existential thoughts. What does it all mean? How are we here? What were we put on this earth to do? Then I’m like, ‘Zoey, just stop.'”

[From Cosmopolitan]

I admit that I didn’t know much about Zoey before this, but she seems charming, and she’s been steadily working since she was 15; she’ll turn 25 next month. The reporter notes that she’s had 14 roles in the past two-and-a-half-years alone. Her Zombieland: Double Tap co-stars Woody Harrelson and Jessica Lange both have great things to say about her and how impressed they were with her acting and professionalism. Midway through the interview, Zoey started asking Kate Williams questions, and it’s apparent that she was genuinely interested in the answers. She also read at least one of the reporter’s previous articles, too. Zoey seems to take her work as an actress seriously, and she also puts time and effort into interviews. Williams wrote that “Zoey is about to go from next big thing to big thing,” and I’m looking forward to it.

Judge me all you want but I have loved her since watching Vampire Academy. A truly deeply terrible movie that everyone should watch.

  2. My3cents says:

She was pretty insufferable in “The politician ”
I don’t know if it’s bad acting or writing but it was hard to watch.

    • Cindy says:

The Politician as a whole was insufferable to watch in general. I like Ryan Murphy and his sense of humor, but that show just failed for me. It tried to be smart and funny and failed at both. It was just cringey.

Like Scream Queens, I felt the show could’ve been a fine movie, but it wasn’t interesting enough to stretch it into a whole series.

I know people crippled by anxiety, where intrusive thoughts seem to hold them hostage and rob them of joy. It’s extremely interesting to me that she can give her anxiety a positive spin, that it motivates her toward success. Maybe she is a very positively-oriented person, trying to see the good in various situations. Anyway, I like the photo shoot and love her fashions in it.

I have very intense anxiety and it has spurred me to overachieve to an extreme degree, driving me to work harder and harder out of fear that I might lose my job (I’m the primary breadwinner). It put me in the hospital at one point from migraines and exhaustion, and all my fears finally spilled out, a fear of losing my job, our house, everything we had worked for… and I thought my husband was going to die. He would have laughed if it hadn’t been so serious. My husband has managed our finances (at my insistence, he was in finance) and I truly had no idea how financially stable that hard work had made us, and he had no idea that his constant facetious bitching about “we’re broke, stop buying shoes” had given me extreme anxiety about our financial situation.

So now, I pay close attention to our balance sheet, and he’s more careful about the bitching, but I also have a much more realistic view of my professional reputation as a workhorse, and that 18 hour days are not necessary to maintain a good and successful reputation and career. Anxiety can be be a spur to drive harder, but if it’s not managed properly, it can take years off your life and ruin the things you love.

This is everyone’s daily PSA to drink your water, eat some fuel, take a walk, and if you need them, take your meds.

        I’m legit happy for you.

I finally spoke up about my anxiety, and then my husband couldn’t be there for me. He couldn’t hold it up. So, now we’re splitting. After over a decade. ugh. Sorry to be Debbie Downer!

If we’d gone to therapy sooner it might have worked out. Or it might not have. But I do wish we would have.

Oh Some Chick, I’m so sorry!

My anxiety used to be a motivator, I joked with my aunt (who also has anxiety) that it keeps us sharp. However, once I had kids, I would have intrusive thoughts constantly and it was robbing me of joy. I’m on sertraline now and it’s great. It’s not for everyone and I know some people have to try other medications before finding one that works for them, but if anyone is considering speaking with their doctor about it, I encourage it. I’m still me, just without intrusive thoughts.

      • ThEHufflepuffLizLemon says:

Yes! I worried about not being me, but I am still me, just without all the baggage. I had to try a couple meds, but I have a daily and an emergency script, and I’m SO much happier.

She was absolutely luminous and amazing in Set It Up and had great chemistry with Glen Powell. I’d say she’s one of the better actresses of her generation.

    • Lizzie says:

i agree. she is a great actress and she just has – IT. she sparkles. she’s so charming it is almost impossible. those two should keep doing movies together. they sincerely remind me of old school movie duos like myrna loy and william powell or spencer tracy and katherine hepburn.

    • Tiffany says:

Yes. She was great in that film. The whole thing was so cute.

  5. Lala11_7 says:

I LOVE her Mama!!!! And she’s giving me Tea Leoni/Kate Beckinsale vibes…BIG TIME!

  6. Lucy says:

Vampire Academy was a total sh*tfest, but she was very charming in it. She vaguely resembles Halsey, doesn’t she?

  7. Mumbles says:

What terrible editorial for the photo spread. “Let’s do a ‘wasting food’ theme.”

  8. savu says:

I love this shoot. Not many women would really go for it like that. She genuinely looks like she’s having a blast.
I got a huuuuge crush on her in Set It Up. She’s one of those charming people whose sparkle comes through on screen, but doesn’t really get typecast. More Zoey!

  9. Mee says:

She’s cute but no one would be talking or hiring her if she wasn’t his/her daughter.

  10. Elizabeth says:

I now know who she reminds me of: Rose Byrne.
