Last week, major events began to get cancelled, and major sports started suspending their seasons. I tweeted then that I didn’t see how the Met Gala could still remain on the schedule – the gala is always held on the first Monday in May, and May is coming up quickly. Few people think that anyone will have a handle on the coronavirus in six weeks’ time, and even if we do have a handle on it (we won’t), it won’t be the time to play dress up and such. So Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour said the obvious in her April editor’s letter. The Met Gala is being postponed until further notice. And Wintour is endorsing Joe Biden.
Like everyone else, I have been experiencing this COVID-19 crisis as a series of hurtling developments, where one never knows quite what each new day will bring. Through it all one fact, however, remains stubbornly unchanged: President Trump. I, like so many of us, have been appalled by how he has responded to the pandemic—the optimistic and fact-free assurances that all will be fine, the chaotic implementation of travel bans and claims about a “foreign virus,” the narcissistic ease with which he has passed blame to others, his dishonesty with the American people, and worst of all, his shocking lack of empathy and compassion for those who are suffering and fearful. Meanwhile, his administration has been unforgivably slow to provide testing, and to mobilize treatment to all who will need it. These weeks have been a reminder—as if we needed a reminder—that America must choose a new president.
And it is my belief that we should choose Vice President Joe Biden. I have been impressed with the wider field of Democratic candidates this primary season, but after Biden’s decisive victories on Super Tuesday, I, like so many Americans, made up my mind to rally behind the Vice President. He is unmistakably a man of character and has so many qualities that we are in desperately short supply of in Washington right now: decency, honor, compassion, trustworthiness, and best of all experience. I know that we will get through COVID-19, but on the other side more challenges await—not the least of which is grappling with our ongoing climate crisis. We must choose a president who is ready to govern, who understands how to get results out of Congress, and who can set this country on a path to sustainability. And what a relief it will be to have a president who puts the well-being of others before his own, who doesn’t constantly think of himself first. For all these reasons, I look forward to casting my ballot in November for Joe Biden—together with whatever running mate he chooses (and he has wisely committed to choosing a woman). I am confident she will be qualified and equipped with the experience that Biden knows—as well as anyone—is required for the job. Election day cannot come soon enough.
One day that will not arrive on schedule will be the opening of the Costume Institute’s exhibition, About Time. Due to the unavoidable and responsible decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will not take place on the date scheduled. In the meantime, we will give you a preview of this extraordinary exhibition in our forthcoming May issue.
I like everything Wintour says here, and how she framed this – if she had made a bigger deal about canceling or postposing the gala, people would have been like “not now, Anna, we have other concerns.” She struck the right tone, is what I’m saying. And I agree with her about Biden too – the coronavirus pandemic has underlined the urgent need to get Donald Trump the f–k out of office, by any means necessary.
Also: Anna has been working from home as of last week, and Conde Nast and Hearst apparently told employees at all of their magazines that they can work from home during this time. Which is a great thing.

75% of my office is working from home for the foreseeable future but my boss says I have to come in. I’m considered a “frontline employee” so she’s insisting and said we’ll revisit it next week.
We’ve at least had very good communication & quick action in our Province but still bloody nervous. Hope all my fellow CBers stay safe!!
I’m a mandatory employee at my job and will be going in. I’m doing my best to stay home otherwise. I work with a vulnerable population and it would be pretty devastating if the virus shows up there.
Be careful and stay safe Juliette and Ashipper!
I work in health care, and our memo said yesterday “no time off will be granted for the foreseeable future”. Even though I’m administration, and have 7 weeks of vacation time this year, I can’t use any. Finally they have put very strict screening processes in place, but I take public transportation to work every day and could do a lot of work from home. To me, it would be much smarter to have me do so, but they make the rules. Who knows who I’m sitting beside on the bus…I hope I don’t get infected and put others at risk. Scary times!
I work for a municipality and not only are they making us come to work, we are still open to the public for foot traffic.
I found myself nodding along. Very well put.
Conde Nast should make work from home mandatory. New York has been hard hit by coronavirus.
I wish I could be confident that this is the end of the Ego In Chief but sadly it won’t be. I actually saw a group of about twenty older folks carrying pro Trump signs on a street corner a few days ago. I couldn’t believe it. I am in SoCal, not Trumpland. Denial runs deep for too many people. Once this all ends, people will have selective memory and conveniently forget how he bungled this catastrophic situation. November is still quite a few months away.
They’re going to blame the democrats. How do I know? Because that’s all I’ve heard from my dad since this debacle started. He’s a hardline trump supporter and nothing will change their minds. Everything is either a conspiracy or blown out of proportion. They just want someone to blame for everything. Nothing else matters to them.
Last night we learned my son’s school has extended it’s closing until April 10. Some are saying longer, but officially it’s the 10th. And all Staars testing has been cancelled. Honestly, I think it’s kinda great how everyone in both sectors have been in the same page regarding social distancing. It’s obviously not because of anything orange fart has done. I like everything she says here and that the gala was an insert at the end. Nicely done.
Anna’s statement is extra delicious because Donny’s deepest desire (besides Ivanka) is to be accepted by the NYC and Hollywood elite. He’s definitely going to tweet-rage about this.
She is still a sad person in my book, even a stopped clock is correct twice a day.
I just can’t care that she thinks and things are getting crazier by the day in LA.
I am the only one going into work on my floor..given my role in my company …so 5,000 sf of empty office space seems like good social distancing. It’s probably temporarily and I will be working from home soon as I expect SoCal will follow NorCal In forcing all non-social services companies to close soon.
Anna Wintour isn’t someone I’d turn to for political guidance. Vogue put Melania on the cover in the mid-2000s and they did a puff piece on Ivanka the year before the election, years after Trump had started his birthism campaign against Obama.
I’m a mandatory employee. Those of you who can work from home, please do. Stay home, do not go out unless necessary. We need people to stay away while we don’t have the privilege of doing the same.
I am working in absolutely non essential store as interior designer. We are open. Business as usual. Not provided with hand sanitizers or wipes. And people are so fucking stupid. Stupid bored brainless housewives coming to pick colours and look at wallpapers! At the time when the whole Europe shuts. The company management HAS a choice to close to the public and just do orders over the phone and no contact deliveries yet CHOSE not to!!! And received email from hr asking about my situation and was told of course the highest priority is health and safety of our staff (my arse) but yeah come to work
Death from a thousand cuts continues for the Trumps. They care nothing about the rest of the world, but they are utterly craven for approval from someone like Wintour.
Speaking of elections, ours in Louisiana have been postponed until June (originally April 4th).
I wonder what will happen if this thing hasn’t blown over by November.
A bunch of states already have, or have been increasing , vote by mail. That’s what should happen. Everyone should vote by mail. I think it’s actually less expensive, and turnout would be HUGE.
Stupid gov in Illinois refused to postpone. Eff him. He lectured the morons going out Saturday to celebrate paddy’s day, but sees nothing wrong with people going out to vote today. Then when the election judges and volunteers started to bail, and rightfully so, he tried to encourage young people to step up. So if you’re young, who cares if you get infected. What a sack of shit.
I love her 💖👑
I’ve never been the biggest fan of Anna Wintour, but this, this knocked it out of the park. That was awesome.
Can someone tell me why it’s white privilege to think that Trump and Biden are the same?
It’s not. It’s rich white privilege to think that they are any different.
Ann Wintour. A real friend of the working class that one.
Hee.
