Mary-Kate Olsen & Olivier Sarkozy are divorcing & it’s already a big mess

B7294_201710_13_094908_0022

Back when Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were just little kids, I never would have predicted that they would turn out to be such eccentric and private adults. They were blonde and cute – they loved fashion. They could have ended up making mall clothes for the rest of their lives. They could have been falling out of clubs and ripping through A-list and B-list boyfriends. Instead, they seemed to find inspiration from, like, Miss Havisham. They walk red carpets like creepy hobo ghosts. They are respected designers and creators of several major, quality fashion lines. MK is the one who got married – Ashley is single (and she has quietly dated some actors). MK settled down with Olivier Sarkozy, brother to the former French president. Olivier is seventeen years older than Mary-Kate. I never even got much of a vibe one way or the other from then. And I never will, because they’re getting a divorce! Huh.

Mary-Kate Olsen wants to get divorced, but she’s hit a major roadblock — coronavirus, so now she wants an emergency court order to speed things along. Mary-Kate says her attorneys got an email from her husband, Pierre Olivier Sarkozy’s attorneys this week giving her a May 18 deadline to get her stuff out of their NYC apartment. She claims Pierre is trying to force her out, because he terminated their lease without her knowledge.

She says she’s been asking Pierre to give her until May 30, but claims he hasn’t responded.

In the docs, obtained by TMZ, she says she can’t meet the deadline — this coming Monday — because of quarantine guidelines in the city. Mary-Kate says the only way she can protect her property is if she’s to file a divorce petition. That would trigger an automatic court order preventing him from disposing of her property.

Mary-Kate says she signed a petition for divorce back on April 17, but was informed NY courts were not accepting divorce filings — other than emergencies — due to the COVID-19 pandemic that was raging in the city. She’s requesting an emergency order to allow her to file the divorce. She’s included her divorce petition in the filing, and in those docs, she requests their prenuptial agreement be enforced.

Olivier, a French banker, and Mary-Kate tied the knot in November 2015 in an intimate Manhattan ceremony. They started dating in 2012. They don’t have any kids together — Olivier has 2 from his first marriage. This was Mary-Kate’s marriage … and now her first divorce.

[From TMZ]

Oh, I bet she HATES that this much information is out there. Both twins are so private and this is SO MESSY. From what I understand, Mary-Kate wanted to file for divorce a month ago but the NY courts wouldn’t let her because of the lockdown. So then Olivier decided to screw over his soon-to-be estranged wife by ordering her out of the New York home they shared (and likely split costs?). And MK is the one with a motherf–king prenup, people. I have no doubt that Olivier is rich (he’s always described as a “banker”), but MK has major assets and I’m proud of her for protecting those assets with a prenup. I would also imagine that this apartment is not the only property she owns in New York? Update: okay, yes, this was a leased property, but they have owned property together, and MK has owned property on her own, sorry about the confusion. But that doesn’t matter – no one should be bitchily forcing their spouse out of a cohabitation situation during a pandemic. Merde!

This only reinforces my perception of men who date/marry much younger women. They are tall children with low voices.

    • Erinn says:

“tall children with low voices” got me. I honestly have to agree!

    • Tuntmore says:

I’d caveat that with “younger women under age 35.” Once you hit your mid-30s and early 40s, a big age difference doesn’t really mean much.

Older men who prefer much younger women tend to go for women in their 20s. A man who’s confident enough in himself to have a relationship with a peri-menopausal woman who’s lost her filter and doesn’t put up with BS is worlds apart from a man looking for a young, compliant partner.

      • SusieQ says:

I agree with your caveat. My boyfriend is 10 years older than I am, but I’m 34. It’s really not a big deal by this point.

      • Sid says:

The age difference issues can pop up again when the older partner hits their senior years and the younger partner is still middle-aged. With Mary Kate she would have potentially been in her 50s with a husband in his 70s. Modern 70-somethings might be more active than in previous generations, but after a certain age each additional year can feel a lot different than the last, just like how one year can bring big changes in kids and teens.

      • Starkiller says:

So now women are considered “peri-menopausal” at age 35? Jesus H. Christ, what a world.

    • yellow says:

even worse they can turn out to have major control issues, ala narcissist or even worse.

  2. minx says:

And I thought it would last forever, said no one.

    • Lilly (with the double-L) says:

I don’t reply as often as your comments make me laugh. But, thank you, @minx.

    • Bettyrose says:

Seriously. This could have been the divorce no one cared about…but for this unnecessary drama. I agree with above comments that he just seems like a controlling dbag with stunted maturity. No need for any of this when they both have other residences, never need to see each other, and can easily afford to maintain the lease on this place as a temporary storage unit. Does make one think about what hell it must be for normal people getting divorced right now though.

    • Snappyfish says:

I knew it was doomed when descriptions of the wedding reception included the phrase “Bowls full of cigarettes”

  3. T says:

I shouldn’t know this, but the photo for this article from the homepage is Ashley not Mary Kate!

    • Hel says:

Glad I’m not the only one who noticed!

    • Kaiser says:

I honestly can’t tell them apart and this photo was labeled Mary-Kate! I will change it

    • Léna says:

Good eyes! I have a lot of twins around me (my dad and his twin, cousins, friends) and I always can tell them apart, even in pictures when they are like 1 year old haha. But with Ashley and Mary Kate, I can tell them apart only when they are on the same picture, but never when there’s only one lol

      • Abby says:

It’s the eyes. The twins looked extremely alike up until around 2012, that’s when MK’s looks began to change. She used to have large, round eyes, like Ashley. Now they are very narrow and she also looks so gaunt.

    • PlainJane says:

I am HERE for that header photo. Mr. Not Within His Therapeutic Window out for walkies with his pre-teen daughter. And papa does not approve of his daughter’s taste in shoes.

  4. Lara says:

When I read the excerpt, I read “baker” and thought “huh, that’s unusual but cool,” then read further and saw it was “banker” and thought “of fucking course.”

    • AnnaKist says:

      I still think I’d rather have a baker… 🧁 🍰 🍪 🥖 🍞 🥯 🥨 🥧

  5. Esmom says:

At first my eyes saw French baker instead of French banker and I had to blink a couple times. Team MK, of course. Hopefully she can move out safely and lock the prenup terms down.

  6. Yoyo says:

If he terminated the lease, they don’t own the apartment.

  7. PhD gossip says:

    1. Apt they shared in Gramercy Park is a rental and they are fighting over termination of rent on it.
    2. They are fighting over possessions in apartment
    3. His lawyer is no name young guy 10 years out of law school; her lawyer is high priced divorce lawyer so you know who is the moneyed partner.

This match always struck me as a super strange even by Hollywood standards.

    • Erinn says:

The lawyer part is strange. Why would he get someone so young? I mean, I guess it’s possible the guy is just really good. But it seems like a weird situation … with the kind of money I assume they have I would have figured we’d see two high powered attorney’s with huge track records.

It was always a strange match, you’re right. I feel like some of that is because she genuinely seems to be private and more reserved. It probably was comfortable dating someone else who’s wealthy, but not out promoting things constantly or trying to bring attention to them. Where he was an older guy, he probably wasn’t as interested in going out partying – I’m sure their kinds of parties would be more like fancy dinners and drinks and things like that, so that probably worked well for them.

I think we’re going to see more couples splitting just because they’re not used to spending so much time together.

I am so glad she has a prenup though. I’m actually quite proud of her. She’s handling this incredibly well so far.

    • Lucy2 says:

Ooh Gramercy Park is so pretty.
I never realize they actually got married. I must’ve forgotten that. Since the apartment is a lease, and she must surely own property elsewhere, this seems more like a legal battle that a practical one of not having anywhere else to go.

      • VKES says:

Their wedding had crystal bowls full of cigarettes on the tables. That famous detail is the only reason I remember they got married.

    • Flamingo says:

As someone 10 years out of law school, I’d argue that you can be a pretty decent attorney with 10 years of practice. It’s not like he graduated yesterday.

      • KL says:

Also a lawyer… I thought the 10 year comment was odd as well. I don’t know what his practice has been like, but if he’s been hardcore litigating for 10 years, that’s like a lifetime.

      • Liz version 700 says:

Yeah I mean I am 15 years out of law school and that is a lot of time practicing. How old do people want their divorce lawyers to be?

      • Lightpurple says:

Right?? He would be in his mid-30s with probably 10 years of litigation experience that probably focuses on divorces and property distribution in divorces. He could also just be signing some motions while a more senior partner is supervising the thing.

A former colleague, whom I despise, is married to a guy who has been out 10 years. He clerked for two different appeals court judges and started at a big law firm but now, he works for a firm that only handles “society divorces” down in Palm Beach, Florida. His sole focus is going after the money. The senior partner handles meeting with the client and all other court appearances. Ten years is plenty of experience and far from being a “baby lawyer.”

      • Flamingo says:

I got curious since I know that a lot of people put weight into an attorney’s pedigree and neither of their attorneys have what I would consider to be a show stopping education. His attorney went to New York Law (T100+). Hers went to Miami (T50+).

To me it doesn’t matter. I work daily with a fantastic attorney who went to a horrible law school with like a 50% bar passage rate. She is an amazing litigator, but we have had clients request a change to another partner who went somewhere more prestigious, so they can tell their friends that they’re paying the big bucks for someone who went to Yale.

      • bettyrose says:

The one time I was on a jury, the ADA was easily 25-30 years younger than the public defender, probably no more than 3-5 years out of a law school. She was smart, intense, and well prepared. The much older public defender couldn’t give a crap about the case and had job burn out written all over him. I realize that’s more a statement about the challenges of being a public defender than age, but for what someone only 10 years out of law school lacks in experience they probably more than make up for in energy and drive to build a reputation.

      • Miffy says:

I’m from another country so not US based but had the utmost privilege of witnessing my ‘baby’ lawyer (I mean, not even 5 years in to his career) wipe the floor with my ex’s extremely senior partner of a very well established firm. I’m not sure about in the US but here family and divorce law is constantly being updated and the ‘old boys’ just don’t have the interest in updating their knowledge. Here it’s definitely an advantage getting the new blood to represent you with their up to date skills.

      • Kate says:

Lol yes that is often partner status so not sure what that’s regarded as so lowly.

    • Tiffany :) says:

From what I understand, you can’t make changes to things like insurance and standards of living during divorce proceedings. It seems super shady of him to try and evict her after she was told she couldn’t file for divorce because pandemic.

    • Scal says:

That’s what I was reading as well, that the divorce filing protects her items in the home otherwise the landlord can chuck them all out since the lease was canceled.

Apparently she’s having a hard time finding movers during the pandemic, and there’s debate as to who owns what. Just sheer spite and meanness on his part.

  8. Stephanie says:

I’m more surprised they were apparently renting their home and her name isn’t on the lease so she can’t appeal to the landlord?

    • Aang says:

Name on lease or no if she lives there she can’t be evicted without due process.
And the landlord has to hold her stuff for 30 days before disposal if she is evicted. At least that is the law in NY outside of the city. The city might have even stricter laws. But that isn’t stopping her husband from kicking her stuff to the curb. Side note: he is way too tall for her. They look bizarre together. I know it’s superficial but I don’t think I could be comfortable with a person that is 50% larger than myself.

      • holly hobby says:

Doesn’t NY have a no eviction law in place during the crisis? I know where I live you can’t evict someone now.

    • Mia4s says:

The rental thing surprised me the most too! (Not so much the divorce thing. 😂). I know NYC is unique but given her resources and the fact that as I understood it she and her sister have been NYC based for years, I’m just surprised she doesn’t own?

I was going to say this could all get very interesting but unfortunately for us gossips, she’s proven herself to value privacy. My guess is ultimately this ends very quietly.

      • Goldie says:

This is just a random guess, but I’m thinking that Mary-Kate probably owns her own apartment. But her husband did not want to live there, because it’s her place and his name wouldn’t be on the deed. So he rented this apartment for them to live in together. And now, apparently he’s terminated the lease.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Given that she is much wealthier than he is, even thou he is a banker, I can bet that he will go after some of her assets esp if he is anything like his half brother.

      • SamC says:

I wondered if it was his apartment and she moved in since he has kids and/or they thought they might end up moving to France at some point. She probably owns a place and leases it out.

    • OriginalLara says:

They were renting this property but they have a bought a townhouse together in Turtle Bay a few years ago. Not sure if they still own the TB property but I wouldn’t be surprised if the East village apartment was just a side property, so to speak. That would explain why only his name is on the deeds.

  9. Kathgal says:

The only thing I ever remember about them as a couple was MK saying in an interview that she was a step mom now. And that at their wedding their guest favors were big bowls all around of cigarettes. That doesn’t mean anything in regards to this article, but every time I would see their picture I would just think about those big bowls.

    • Lucy2 says:

Oh geez, I just posted that I didn’t remember they got married, but the bowl of cigarettes jogged my memory! Ew.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

Seriously anytime I see their picture all I think about are those disgusting bowls of cigarettes. Big yuck.

    • Eugh says:

First thing I thought of also!

  10. babsjohnson says:

What a vicious bitch. Sarkozy of course.

  11. Sofia says:

Divorcing in the middle of a pandemic? I suspect things got quite bad, especially with how he’s told her to get her things out of the apartment ASAP

  12. Lisa says:

Glad she has a prenup and hope the divorce goes through smoothly. He is a jerk.

  13. smee says:

That first photo – I would definitely think it was a man and his daughter if I saw them out. And it’s not the height difference either….

  14. FC says:

This whole union was creepy from the get-go.

  15. Summergirl says:

This is such a creepy match. I feel I read years ago that she had a serious prescription drug problem, and that their union was built on that co-dependence. Maybe it was a blind item on Lainey? Does anyone remember this?

    • FHMom says:

I thought eating disorder, or maybe it was her sister.

    • Red Dog says:

Wasn’t there speculation that she was Patrick Verona’s dealer?

And yes, MK was the one who was horrifically thin even next to her sister for a while there.

      • VKES says:

I don’t know who Patrick Verona is but Heath Ledger’s bodyguard called MK before he called the police when he was found dead. It’s speculated she had supplied Heath the drugs that killed him.

      • Red Dog says:

Ding ding ding… *insert something about beer-flavored nipples here*

      • Murphy says:

Patrick Verona is Heath Ledger’s character in 10 Things. She was trying to keep his name out of it.

  16. manda says:

I just wish she would brush or do something with her hair. I can’t get past that

    • kellebelle says:

I’ll never understand putting on nice clothes, a pricey handbag, nice shoes, and leaving the hair looking like they just got out of the shower. Not becoming. They’re 33 years old and insist on looking like crones in their early 50s. The hideous posture, everything. I never thought they were cute, ever.

    • Meg says:

theyre in fashion too, its like theyll tell others how to dress but theyre above caring? I cant help but feel like this is a hipster move for them

  17. Valiantly Varnished says:

I can see why she’s divorcing him…who tries to force their ex-spouse out of their home during a pandemic where the entire city is in lockdown??

  18. Winnie Cooper’s Mom says:

I’m selfishly bummed the twins took this route in life. I’m the same age as them and was always excited for their movies and tv shows as a teen. When they kind of fell off the map, I did not get it. I get wanting privacy, but turning into ghostly, hobo-looking individuals was odd IMO. They were so cute and now look at MK- she looks half dead. It makes me sad.

    • MissMR says:

I kinda get it. I’m old enough to remember when they were teenagers making kids movies. There were a lot of creepy dudes sexualizing them and making comments about waiting for them to be “legal” when they turned 18. It was so gross. I don’t blame them for getting out of the spotlight and wearing huge baggy clothing that hides their form.

      • Jules says:

Yea, I respect their desire for privacy and how they style themselves. Not my style, but they did not succumb to Hollywood pressure of looking a certain way, or over-sexualizing their image.

    • holly hobby says:

It’s so weird they are related to Elizabeth Olson. She’s well adjusted. Granted their father left the twins’ mother and started a new family that produced Elizabeth but still. I do think the broken family probably attributed to why the twins ended up looking like they do or being eccentric.

      • Thea says:

Elizabeth is their full sibling, not half. Their dad left and started another family after Lizzie was born.

    • Otaku fairy says:

I appreciate the fact that even though they have their own style and are modest for themselves, you don’t hear about them being awful or disrespectful about other women for differing from them in that area. They easily could go that route and be applauded, as there’s a lot of pressure on women from puberty onward to lean into that us vs. them mentality like it’s the answer to women’s problems rather than one of the causes, but some girls do know better than that. Just goes to show that it can easily be done. Hopefully she’s healthy and safe in this divorce.

  19. TyrantDestroyed says:

There such an odd couple. I remember the rumors of their cigarette themed wedding. I think this divorce will get messy in the beginning but will go super quiet after MK gets in control. As Kaiser mentioned the 3 sisters are super private.

  20. lobstah says:

I wonder if he’s found someone new, hence the hasty ending of the lease?

  21. Foile says:

Couldn’t she just lease the apartment herself? Surely landlords would struggle leasing out a property at this time, so she could just take over the lease?

    • Penguinmama says:

That is exactly what I was thinking! She could just extend the lease so she can have time to get her things out. Though I understand her not wanting to live there anymore!

  22. Severine says:

In the first pic it looks like a daddy taking his little girl’s hand and leading her somewhere. Creeps me out.

  23. Lucy says:

I know she’ll be fine in the end, but still, UGH. He sounds like a tool.

  24. agnes says:

Who could have guessed that a brother of Ncolas Sarkozy would be petty?

  25. Andrew’s Nemesis says:

What a horribly stressful situation for her, and even worse that it’s been made so public. I really do feel for her.

  26. Amelie says:

Not surprised they are divorcing but what awful timing. Also it’s even more bizarre that her husband is trying to evict her from a rental property. MK probably owns her own place somewhere in the city, I’m just surprised she’d agree to live in a rental with her husband. Legally I don’t even know if he or the landlord could enforce the eviction during the pandemic, I thought Cuomo had temporarily halted all evictions in the city for 60 days? It’s still a horribly shitty thing to do on Sarkozy’s part. He definitely was trying to kick her out so he could claim ownership of commonly owned belongings, no doubt. He should have known better than to screw with an Olsen. Of course she has a prenup and of course she is going to have the best divorce lawyer out there.

I’ve also heard rumors of her substance abuse issues and every time I remember that she was involved in the direct aftermath of Heath Ledger’s death when the housekeeper found the body and called Mary-Kate. My guess is their relationship was based on drugs, but I would not be surprised if they had been casually hooking up too.

  27. L4frimaire says:

Good for her. She’s young enough to move on and reset. The Sarkozys really punching above their weight with their wives. I don’t see the appeal of them at all.

  28. LunaSF says:

The Olsen twins are around the same age as me and I loved them growing up and watched all their shows and movies. I’ve always had a soft spot for them because they had such an odd life and had their own struggles (I can’t remember which one had the eating disorder that was covered heavily by the tabloids). My husband is 11 and a half years older than me (I met him at 27 while I was going through a divorce and he was 39) and I never thought I would be with someone that much older but here we are (with a baby now). I’ve softened my stance on age gaps but something about this marriage seemed so odd to me. They never looked happy or playful. Getting divorce sucks but being divorced is great!

    • Queen Meghan's Hand says:

      Congratulations!
And HA @ “getting divorced sucks but being divorced is great!”

  29. Awkward symphony says:

The guy is creepy.I dont know what she found in him! Good luck MK

  30. SURFCHICK says:

You love who you love. Talking about their age difference is shallow. He is being juvenile. Tried to get rid of their home without telling her? Just leave dude. Bye.

  31. Natasha says:

I’m a landlord so let’s get a couple things straight:
—if the lease is a yearly lease then the landlord cannot just break it and kick people out. Landlord can not take MK off the lease without her consent.
—if the lease is month to month (or if they originally had a yearly lease and that ended but they didn’t sign a new lease but stayed= that turns into month to month) then the landlord can give 30 day notice to vacate for all residents. And mk can be evicted if she refused to leave and the courts are open (they’re not right now).

I am not in NY but as far as I know real estate is “essential business” so MK can find a new rental. She can obviously afford to buy. And although finding movers will be hard, it is not impossible right now. All the divorce drama is unnecessary. And mk could seriously just stay in the apt without consequence until courts open, landlords cannot physically force anyone out or change the locks

  32. Ashley says:

The biggest surprise in this story is that someone as rich as her leases. Why would you?
