The Sussexes ‘sent their congratulations privately’ to Eugenie & Jack

Princess Eugenie wedding

Princess Eugenie and Prince Harry have always been pretty close. They’re close in age and they have many friends in common, and Eugenie was one of the first people in the family to meet Meghan. It was also widely believed that Eugenie was dying to announce her engagement before Harry announced his, but she was told to wait and let Harry and Meghan go first. Then, on Eugenie’s wedding day, Meghan told people – including the family – at the reception that she was expecting. Finding Freedom made that detail a parenthetical. Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand wrote: “It did not go down particularly well with Eugenie, who a source said told friends she felt the couple should have waited to share the news.” I mean… as I said, I understand Harry & Meghan’s perspective, that it is what it is. But I also understand why Eugenie was mad about it. It was thunder-stealing on someone else’s wedding day. Anyway, now Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank are expecting. Are Harry and Meghan going to steal this baby’s thunder too??

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are sharing in his cousin Princess Eugenie’s baby joy from across the pond. A source tells PEOPLE that Harry and Meghan — who relocated to California earlier this year after stepping down from their senior roles within the royal family — have “sent their congratulations privately” to Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank after their announcement on Friday that they are expecting their first child.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex publicly announced their own baby news — that they were expecting son Archie, born in May 2019 — three days after Princess Eugenie and Jack’s wedding in October 2018.

[From People]

I think that was probably the best way to do all of this? Like, if Harry and Meghan had issued an actual statement congratulating Eugenie and Jack, they would have made it all about “the Sussexes are issuing a statement, those thunder-stealers!!” And if they said nothing publicly, they would have been accused of being rude to Harry’s beloved cousin. So instead, *someone* told People Magazine that private congratulations were given.

Even though Harry & Meghan are trying not to steal Eugenie’s thunder this time, the Daily Mail commenters can’t help but make Eugenie’s bun in the oven ALL about Meghan. Woof.

LOL at People mag. Did any other royal publicly congratulate her? (besides the queen?) I didn’t see Charles or the Cambridges post anything.

    • equality says:

Clarence House posted on Instagram and Twitter.

    • VS says:

Didn’t the cambridges post pictures of their kids that same day? I can’t really recall

Had H&M done the same thing, hell would have blown over….this tells everything anyone needs to know

      • equality says:

The pictures were a couple of days later. They didn’t post anything on the day of Eugenie’s announcement.

  2. JT says:

I don’t think FF should be taken as gospel, like many biographies, some details have been false. In Meg’s lawsuit with the daily mail, her lawyer pointed out a number of inaccuracies in the book. These things happen and it doesn’t mean Omid should be slammed or anything. Mike Tindall already stated that the family was informed via WhatsApp before the wedding. Plus H&M as well as Eugenie and Jack vacationed together at the Clooneys after the wedding, so I doubt there were hard feelings.

    • Sid says:

Same JT. For whatever reason people seem to be glossing over Mike Tindall’s comment and still running with the “Meghan ruined Eugenie’s wedding” angle. I guess some folks just want her to be a villain no matter what. I still remember the hundreds of comments on that post here about the FF excerpt claiming the pregnancy was announced at the wedding. The lurkers apparently couldn’t wait to bring the knives out.

BTW, Eugenie is pretty much the only family member who was making a point of showing public support via her SM, what with her personal posts welcoming the Sussexes to IG, congratulating them on Archie’s birth, and comments on their posts. And some of this was after her wedding.

    • Nic919 says:

Exactly. Mike Tindall was pretty clear that all the cousins knew through what’s App before the wedding. FF was pretty sloppy here because the wedding was probably the first time most of them saw her in person since the announcement on what’s app.

      • Athyrmose says:

This. Also very likely that guests not in on the group chat were probably outright *asking* her. The coat she wore was a giveaway to everyone, and you know people are nosy when they think someone is expecting.

    • Amy Bee says:

I agree. Finding Freedom was great at humanising Harry and Meghan but a lot of the material for the book was just taken from the tabloids. The authors were able to verify or refute some of the stories and the others were imagined or as Harry and Meghan’s lawyers have stated, creative license was used. I tend to believe the Mike Tindall version of events.

  3. heygingersnaps says:

I don’t get this thunder stealing. If it was a normal family affair, I certainly wouldn’t mind another family member announcing good news but of course these people are different. 😒🙄

    • Becks1 says:

I honestly think the “thunder stealing” came when they publicly announced it a few days later. I think the Yorks were expecting a week long newscycle about Eugenie’s wedding (which was never going to happen) and the wedding stopped being mentioned the instant the pregnancy was announced. The wedding was never going to be the big deal in the news that the Yorks wanted it, in general, and with the start of the Australia/south pacific tour, it was going to get knocked off that much faster. The pregnancy was just the icing on the cake in terms of the newscycle. But I think Andrew and Fergie thought the wedding was going to be this huge deal in the british papers and it wasn’t. They got some good PR from it, Eugenie looked lovely, etc – and that was it.

But I think Yorks blame Meghan and the pregnancy for why there wasn’t more buzz after the fact.

      • JT says:

People don’t care about the Yorks that much. My God. Were they really expecting weeks and months of coverage like Sussexes and the Cambridges? The pregnancy announcement barely got coverage, and people are already trying to connect it to Meghan. Which, incidentally, is giving her announcement more play than it deserves.

      • Becks1 says:

I feel like at this point people only care about the Yorks in terms of Andrew being a criminal, but I don’t think they know that.

      • Merricat says:

Yes. The Yorks think those princesses are going to save their reputation, but it’s not going to happen. People are not interested.

      • ArtHistorian says:

Andrew has always had an overinflated perception of his own importance and influence – so I bet that he expected tons of coverage of E’s wedding and was mighty peeved that it didn’t. Even without the pregnancy news, Harry and Meghan’s tour was going to knock E’s wedding off the news cycle.

      • windyriver says:

Pretty sure I remember seeing pictures right after Eugenie’s wedding with background details – close ups of flower arrangements, possibly something about the cake – because I recall thinking they were going to milk that weekend as much as they could. I assume the original pictures were on Instagram, but would have been noted in an article elsewhere for me to have seen them.

By then of course the Sussexes were in Australia and made their baby announcement. So that tanked any additional PR the Yorks hoped from releasing more wedding info.

    • Myra says:

I don’t get it either. The bride has received all the oohs and aahs at the ceremony, especially when she first walked in. At the reception, it’s a more relaxed time and people are generally gossiping and talking about personal stuff. The only thunder stealing, I can think of is a proposal at the reception or an argument/fight breaking out. The weddings I have attended, have had good news of one family member or another shared, congratulations given and topic of conversation changed to something else.

      • JT says:

I mean damn, people barely care that Andrew is an alleged pedophile. That’s how insignificant the Yorks are. Let it go. People are still up in arms in the comments here about this. The Yorks Will never and have never garnered much attention. There were always people who got more attention like Diana, Harry, William, Kate, and now Meghan.

  4. Sofia says:

I don’t blame Eugenie for feeling a certain way – no matter how it went down but considering how she made a post on Instagram with the captions “welcome cousins” with a picture of them both, (yes cousins as in plural) and made a comment on Archie’s birth announcement saying “we’re so happy for you” says to me that she got over however she felt – or at least is happy to let people publicly know she supports them.

    • Mumbles says:

It might mean that even though she has garbage parents, she might actually be a nice person. (Lazy, but nice).

And while it is true that the Sussexes’ lawyers did assert that FF had errors, they cited some as examples, and this detail wasn’t one of them.

      • Sofia says:

I didn’t say it wasn’t true. I literally said “no matter how it went down”.

My whole point was that even if she did feel like shit about it, she’s happy to at least support them both publicly. But considering your comments in the past @Mumbles, you’ll take my comment however you like.

      • Sofia says:

        delete

      • Nic919 says:

Mike Tindall already had stated to the media the cousins knew prior to the wedding. The lawyers not commenting on this doesn’t mean it’s true. It means that it was irrelevant to the issues about the letter which are what is being litigated in court. Eugenie or really Andrew’s hurt feelings on this have no legal merit in a court case about copyright.

    • equality says:

Fergie has also made statements supporting Meghan. I think the drama was only created by the media as usual.

      • Sofia says:

Like I said, I don’t blame Eugenie (and the family) a certain way about it but judging by Eugenie’s behavior and Fergie’s apparent comments (which I have no idea about btw), it seems they’re okay to publicly support them at the very minimum.

    • BnLurkN4eva says:

I always suspected that any upset over people congratulating Meghan at the wedding about her pregnancy came from Andrew, (note: H/M didn’t announce anything at the wedding, just accept congratulations and I suspect that was directed at Harry who has been yearning to be a father more so than Meghan.)

  5. Carol says:

The Windsors are an awful family. What kind of Bridezilla cares is someone is pregnant and it is announced at the wedding? In my family, we would be happy for any good news that effected us as a family. None of this type of thunder stealing makes any sense to me.

  6. ABritGuest says:

Eugenie’s wedding press cycle was always going to be very short & over taken by the Oceana tour even if there was no baby announcement. Look at Beatrice-most of the attention was based on her wearing the Queen’s old dress& jibes about her father. The York girls just don’t have the interest.

Even Eugenie’s pregnancy announcement was still overshadowed by the royal finances report (nice try BP) and many of the reports on her pregnancy included random references to the Sussexes& Archie.

The married-ins have BEEN attracting more interest then the born royals for a while. So many people can barely tell difference between Eugenie and Beatrice and William & Harry attract more attention because of being Diana’s sons.

    • ABritGuest says:

I mean the BBC turned covering it, Andrew was out there begging networks to show it and did that random interview to drive interest. That and the wedding carriage with erm limited crowds shows there was minimum interest in the wedding. but she had a lovely autumn sunny day, married her long term love, still got a carriage ride, other royals looked happy at her wedding, Trump congratulated her (😜) and I know so many who favour her dress& tiara over other royal brides so think she still won.

  7. Jean says:

What if Harry and Meghan are expecting another child? What if said child is born spring 2021 will this cause another problem?

  8. What eating you says:

Well the Sussex’s don’t need to make a show of it. They don’t use social media anymore so they do not need to go out of there way to congratulate Eugenie and Jack, as long as they have there congrats then it not a big deal.

  9. Ainsley7 says:

It was only a problem because all the York women were merching. Eugenie’s second dress, Fergie’s outfits and Beatrice’s were all free. They’re not working Royals. So, they weren’t breaking any rules. However, people stop giving you free stuff if you can’t bring in enough attention. So, even announcing 3 days later was enough to cause issues. The York women have always relied heavily on getting free stuff. It’s why they get “caught” by the paps so often. They’re always the ones who called them.

  10. Nanea says:

Didn’t Mike Tindall say the close family had heard about Meghan being pregnant via some sort of Royal Family group chat days before Eugenie and Jack got married?

And then someone else said the wedding was the first time they saw Meghan and Harry, and were able to congratulate them in person?

I mean, there had been speculation about Meghan being possibly pregnant some time before, and it was obvious even to onlookers at E&J’s wedding that she was expecting.

So I have no idea why people are still acting all brand new now, nearly two years after it happened…

  11. Snuffles says:

I am SO sick of this “stole Eugenie’s thunder” narrative. At worst it was just unfortunate timing. But Eugenie was NEVER going to get to media attention her parents wanted. They were deluding themselves that they would get the same level of press as the Cambridge’s or the Sussex’s.

And even if the Sussex’s didn’t announce it, the press would have been speculating like crazy because 1) Meghan was starting to show 2) She had to skip a number of events because she was pregnant and in a Zika virus zone.

There was literally no way they could have kept it a secret.

  12. bluemoonhorse says:

Time for people to get a grip. This sounds so Bridezilla to me. If Eugenia was upset because a pregnant woman showed up at her wedding time to get over it. If Meghan danced on top of a reception table, touching her pregnant belly, and screamed to the guest she was impregnated, show me photos or video.

  13. Mariane says:

People mag is not a credible source. Yes Meghan’s friends used them to correct uk tabloids lies but since then they’ve done everything from respreading daily fail lies to outright printing speculation and fiction. That said its likely that they privately congratulated them. My question is why didnt the keenbridges who have public platform do this??
