Would you even want to buy this $500 Jennifer Lopez-for-Coach purse?

jlo coach1

Jennifer Lopez has been under contract with Coach for a year now. She’s the global face of Coach, and while I don’t really associate her with the label immediately, it’s not a bad fit at all. Coach is, to me, neither low-end or high-end. They make good-quality products which are somewhat affordable. I guarantee that more than half of us have a Coach purse in our collection. My current favorite purse is a large black leather Coach shopper/tote with shoulder straps.

Anyway, Jennifer was not content to simply be the face of Coach. No, she also got to design a purse in association with the brand. And can I just say? I HATE IT!! It pains me to say that! I was a big fan of Jennifer’s Kohls collection because she did have a knack for making lots of cute, affordable mass market pieces. I guess this purse was supposed to be slightly more higher-end, but it really doesn’t look like a Coach piece, nor does it look like a cute purse.

One year after becoming the global face of Coach, Jennifer Lopez is launching her very first design collaboration with the brand: a color-blocked cross-body handbag. Billed as “a bag that can keep up with her (and you),” the Coach x Jennifer Lopez “Hutton” bag ($495) features snakeskin trim, a gold chain strap and rivets and a hang tag inscribed with the 51-year-old superstar’s signature.

“Designing my first bag with Coach was a great experience,” Lopez said in a press release. “I really wanted the Coach x Jennifer Lopez ‘Hutton’ to feel like me. The color-block leather and polished hardware details are really my style. It’s a bag that makes me look pulled together and ready for anything, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

[From Page Six]

$500 for that mess? No thanks. I just don’t get the mix of materials and fabrics, and the gold chain strap is tacky AF. I think Jennifer was like “I want it to be A Lady Who Lunches, But She’s Coming In From the Bronx.” It’s just bad.

If it was a tote style or a full on structured bag for me to use during my day, then yes.

It is too small. I can barely fit what I truly think of Casino and his ilk into the bag, that is how small it is.

    • Yup, Me says:

I don’t feel anything about the bag, but if I ever see JLo in public I WILL roar in her direction “F*ck you and those disrespectful baby hairs!”

    • Plus says:

Sorry to say, but it’s an “old lady” purse, and I don’t mean Vintage Riot Old Lady, I mean, dowdy. And…the 90s styling cropped tee & Groove is in the Heart styling is…sad.

  2. Zapp Brannigan says:

It looks like a bag you would buy on AliExpress, and later berate yourself for paying $8.99 for it, with free shipping.

  3. HeyThere! says:

Exactly. Looks trendy and at that price tag it should be timeless(for me). I’m sure people who have money to spend on it will. Not my style, someone else might love it.

  4. snappyfish says:

No. Not even if it was free. With that said the Coach x Jean Michel Basquiat Rogue bag (795) is actually quite lovely

    • Darla says:

Yes, the Basquiat line is stunning, but I couldn’t bring myself. It’s like when Mercedes used Janice Joplin’s “Oh lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz” in their ads. I mean, completely wooosh on what the art stands for. I don’t like that.

      • SomeChick says:

Yeah they are merching the hell out of Basquiat these days. Distasteful. Totally SAMO (as he used to tag… same-o same-o).

      • Plus says:

Basquiat as an Puerto Rican artist…wow…that demeans.

    • BayTampaBay says:

I liked the simple tote bag in Meghan’s capsule collection for SmartWorks much more.

  5. Renee says:

Why does she always do the half mouth open pose????

    • kimberlu says:

thank you!!! that pose is hilarious!!!! and can we acknowledge the make up is too heavy she looks really bad

      • BayTampaBay says:

IMPO. her hair looks better than normal in the picture where she is wearing the pink outfit .

    • Jules says:

Lol right? The try-hard posing and “sexy” open mouth (eye roll) is getting to look so out-dated.

    • Dragon Wise says:

“Your allergies are killing you, but make it fashion!”

    • Stacy Dresden says:

It’s like she really can’t help herself. Very Melania even though I know J Lo did it first.

      • Elena says:

Wow, you said it right, it is very Melania. I would like their photo side by side with their open mouth. Wait till a fly or a bee gets inside their mouth. That would be hilarious!
JLo is another celeb who does everything to be in the news.

    • stormyshay says:

Ugh. I know. I came here to mention the same thing. The mouth open pose is ridiculous, something I would expect from one of these twenty something Instagram influencers. Not a good look for a mature woman as beautiful as her.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

The first pic looks like she is having a madonna moment…GIVE ME MOAR ATTENTION

  6. minx says:

No, looks like it’s from Rue 21.

  7. Lizzieb says:

Nope…and I like Coach bags. I need something useful and classic. Coach is good quality. This bag is too trendy for me…and the fact that it is celebrity adjacent makes it less attractive to me. Hard pass.

    • Liz version 700 says:

I like Coach bags too. I have 4 shoulder bags from the Coach Outlet that added all together do not equal the cost of this lipstick carrying case. My glasses case is almost this big. But put me in front of a Red or black $99 outlet bag and I’m all over it. No bedazzling please as this looks like what I did to my T shirts at age 12

    • minx says:

I have a simple black shoulder strap Coach City bag that I got over 20 years ago. It still
looks good, I passed it on to my daughter and she loves it.

  8. MerlinsMom1018 says:

I have never ever owned a purse that hasn’t come from Wal-Mart (your girl is broke y’all) and THEIR purses look waaaay better than whatever THAT’S supposed to be
Also. Not a fan of Jennifer Lopez

    • SomeChick says:

Love my Coach bags – from Goodwill, every one (ok one was a gift and I think came from ebay). I used to live near a really good Goodwill! The best part is I never buy purses any more unless I find another used Coach. That said, I wouldn’t buy this one, even at Goodwill.

      • MerlinsMom1018 says:

        @SomeChick:
I have friends that have Coach bags, and I think they’re classics, but that one? Not so much.
Also the closest Goodwill to me wouldn’t carry anything even remotely close to classic Coach but I could see THAT one showing up eventually

    • shanaynay says:

With ya on the not being a fan of hers either.

  9. Leah says:

I like the coach bags that I have. Her bag with pink and purple with gold hardware…pass.

  10. whatWHAT? says:

looks like it belongs in her Kohl’s collection.

and I HATE HATE HATE metal chain straps. they make noise, they aren’t comfortable on your shoulder, they get hot/cold, they’re heavy…

    • vertes says:

Agree!! Chain straps just add unwanted weight. I avoid bags with any extra metal enhancements – giant buckles, big connector loops, studs, etc. Studs are sharp & snag clothing.

    • Mads says:

You know that chain is a functional depilatory! If girlfriend was really using her “meh” purse, she would be bald on her favored purse carrying side. Chain ful of hair, people. Chain full of hair.

  11. EMc says:

I hope the snakeskin is faux. Are we seriously still doing this??

    • Jules says:

Right? People say they are worried about climate change but have no problem killing animals for fashion.

  12. sa says:

I guess I’m tacky, because I like the strap, just not the rest of the bag. Coach has a few bags with that strap that can be crossbody, or doubled over to be a shoulder bag, I just haven’t found one yet with that strap where I also like the bag.

I got my first Coach bag from a Coach outlet the summer before I started college. I loved it and I still have it somewhere. This year, they’ve been bringing back older styles, including my bag, but in brighter colors. Apparently I’m now old enough that something I bought new is now vintage. 😉

    • kimberlu says:

curious if the outlet bag you bought years ago was legit coach or made for the outlet? I stopped buying from the outlet because I noticed the serial numbers never were legit coach and all cheaper end made for the outlet

      • sa says:

I have no idea if it was made specifically for the outlet. This is the bag (I’m sure I saw it earlier this year in more colors): https://www.coach.com/turnlock-pouch/2905.html?dwvar_color=B4RA1.

Unfortunately, what I liked about the bag also was its downfall. It’s shape doesn’t allow the piping to go all the way around, so it wears at the bottom corners and there’s nothing they can do to repair it – usually they replace the worn piping.

This was the first major(ish) purchase that my mom bought for me where she hated what I picked out, but said that I was old enough to know what I liked and it wasn’t her place to second guess me. Probably why I’ve never been able to bring myself to donate the bag even though I haven’t used it since college.

      • Maxime duCamp says:

From what I understand ALL the stuff in ALL outlet stores are basically secondary lines made for the outlet. I still have my one and only Coach bag and honestly it’s still in good nick after 30+ years (yes I’m old). There were decades that it didn’t get much use because it’s on the small side (can fit a paperback and a small wallet though so not tiny) and I tend to carry around a fair bit of stuff.

      • Becks1 says:

I think outlets, once upon a time, used to be the cast-offs, last season, etc. Now everything is designed for the outlet from the get-go. But, some outlets do still have the “real” thing – we have a Brooks Brothers outlet near us and while the majority of the store was made for the outlet, there’s always one rack with “real” BB items – not a great selection obviously, but if you check it frequently you can get some good deals (my mom drives by a lot and just stops in and checks the rack.)

      • Melissa says:

Outlet bags are ‘legit’ Coach bags, they just aren’t the ‘designer’ Coach bags. They are cheaper knock offs of their designer lines. Still decent bags, just thinner lesser quality leather, fewer pockets, cheaper zippers and pretty plain without the hardware.
The majority of Coach bags you see women carry are the outlet version. Same with the Michael Kors explosion – most of those come from Ross or TJ Maxx.

Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger also have clothing lines that are strictly for their outlet stores and have little to do with their actual designer lines outside of seasonal colors.

  13. Yoyoma says:

    Xuck Jennifer Lopez

  14. kimberlu says:

jlo is a pretty woman, she ain’t no model….i laughed so hard I spit on my phone screen😂😂😂

  15. Lady Baden-Baden says:

Yes the bag is awful but “I guarantee that more than half of us have a Coach purse in our collection” – is this true?! Wow – I’m such a cheap skate in comparison to so many of you, then! Never spent more than £30 (about $39) on a purse!

    • Melissa says:

I think it’s a pretty true statement — with the caveat that most are the outlet versions and not the designer line. Considering they hand you a 50% off coupon when you walk in the door, many are under $100. I have a large tote (like can be a weekend bag large) that was like $80.

  16. Seraphina says:

It was half that price MAYBE. And I dislike those bulky chains. So uncomfortable.

  17. Leskat says:

Coach bags are tacky, at least they are in my city. And I used to be such a big fan! And I wouldn’t be caught dead with this bag of J.Lo’s.

  18. BarbN says:

Nope, nope, nope. I buy all my purses at the Goodwill. Never pay more than $10, and I have found some lovely ones there. They might not be in pristine condition, but I don’t care.
Jennifer Lopez’s name on something doesn’t mean shit to me.

    • Blueskies says:

I’m a dedicated thrifter and love seeing what I can find second-hand first and that includes purses and bags. My current purse is new, though, and cost me $20. It’s canvas and utilitarian, great for all seasons. I remember when really fancy designer bags started appearing, the odd shapes and metal accents, they just looked bizarre to me.

Jennifer’s bag looks dated (and not in a good, retro way) and cheap. Huge no on the snakeskin, too, if it’s real.

  19. detritus says:

Ahahaha omg the fanny pack way.

It’s a very specific bag for a very specific style, but uhhhh it’s a bit dated. Looks circa butt patting on a yacht. Or Jessica Simpson 2002

  20. Sasha says:

Coach has done a really good job with their comeback. But! This purse sucks!

  21. Jaded says:

I buy second hand purses from a great consignment shop. I’ve found some amazing deals for under $40, some even had the original (and way more expensive) price tags on them.

The only Coach I have is a pair of black loafers I’ve had for ages and got for less than half price at Winners. The quality is great, I’ve worn those puppies for a decade and they show no wear and tear.

J-Lo’s purse is fugly and for the love of God will somebody tell her to stop with the mouth-open sexy face!!!

  22. Mee says:

JLo disinfected her skin with Dior and Chanel lotion after letting something so middle class touch her. I don’t buy JLo being the face of Coach because she doesn’t wear Coach!!! Her kids, who are still growing, wear DIOR as casual wear!!! Chloe Moretz was a good fit, a bit young but still worked. You can’t put “I only drive around in white Bentley” JLo as the face for this brand.

  23. megs283 says:

Well, I like it, but I wouldn’t buy it. 🙂

I love my Coach bags, they’re workhorses. I have a black side satchel that my mom bought for me in 2002 and it still holds up and looks good.

  24. Mette says:

She looks constipated. Is this supposed to be sexy? Says who?

    • shanaynay says:

      LMAO!

    • Jules says:

lol, well the miley cyrus loving social justice feminist warriors be like- it’s feminism y’all. she can sit on a toilet and even be a cannabalist if she wants.
as they watch cuties on netflix…

  25. holly hobby says:

Oh my. That’s one ugly purse. Maybe we will see it heavily discounted at the factory store one day.

  26. Amando says:

I don’t like the strap, but I like the bag itself. I won’t be buying it though. I personally love Coach, their bags are great quality!

    • Veronica S. says:

I bought my mom one a few years back since they were the only ones that had this deep, rich teal color my mother loved at the time. I have to give that thing credit for lasting a good five years through my mother’s abuse. She beat the sh*t out of that thing, and it really only started to fall apart around the shoulder strap toward the end.

  27. kelleybelle says:

I’m not much for cross-body bags but I do love the Felix the Cat Coach bag that Chloe Grace Moretz carries.

  28. Stef says:

Coach is so dated to me. I stopped buying coach bags about 8 years ago when everyone and their mom had one.

Kate Spade is so much better!

    • AMA1977 says:

I got a bag that I LOVED from Kate’s new line after she sold Kate Spade to Liz Claiborne (Frances Valentine) and I was SO disappointed in the quality! The stitching started coming loose after less than a month and the binding on the straps started peeling away, too.

I’ve got several Coach bags that have held up well; the only one I have that didn’t had suede and patent floral appliques and the suede looks pretty bedraggled, but the “regular” leather bags will hold up forever and Coach will recondition for shipping costs.

I do not like this bag, but I am more concerned about her dusty mauve culottes…are the LEATHER?? Is that why they’re bunching like that? Whose style choice was that? Very strange.

  29. Mirage says:

I can find the same pouch for £5 at my local market. So why pay for more?

  30. curachel20 says:

Former handbag buyer/designer here. This style was very popular about 6-7 years ago. We designed and sold a lot-in both leather, pu(which is fake leather) and other materials-some mixed media. The chain strap on a mini bag is pretty common because then it can be a shoulder bag or a crossbody. Basically, this bag would have been very popular 5ish years ago. Also, I loathe Coach. If I was going to buy a designer, it would be something less mass designer. Something nice-I like the color combo they chose 🤷🏻‍♀️

  31. Ann says:

I worked in a factory with mostly men, and my lunchbox looked pretty similar to that “thing”.

  32. Veronica S. says:

I don’t mind it since I’m a fan of the colorblock look, albeit the snakeskin print isn’t my favorite. It is very JLo to me, though.

The adwork is downright amateurish to me. Like damn, did Brooklyn Beckham shoot this or something?

  33. Bellah says:

WTHF is up with the attempted baby hair and Bantu knots hairstyle????😂
    Those look more like “graduated-from-college-getting-my-first-apartment-hair”

  34. Joanna says:

    I like the bag *shrug*

  35. L4frimaire says:

It’s a cute bag. A bit pricey or the size, and should have an interchangeable leather strap to go with the chain.

  36. Natasha says:

I love Coach. I would not buy that bag,it looks like it came from Walmart

  37. Kimberly says:

NO!! It’s ugly and sorry it looks very cheap for something that is supposed to be expensive, high fashion material.

And someone mentioned that JLo’s baby hair style is part of her culture. OH PLEASE.
She’s known for imitating black women with their fashion trends. And also ripping them off by utilizing their vocals for her mediocre singing ability & music. Ashanti is 1 of MANY examples/ victims used by shady men in the music industry in favour of JLo (a pawn in this game) to advance her hustle & career.

  38. duchess of hazard says:

No. Besides, you know JLo is outchere with her birkins. That bag looks uncomfortable to wear.

  39. Minorbird says:

    no, thanks.
