Kid from Kid ‘N Play is selling suits

Sometimes life can be so sad. You try to put a good spin on it, but once in a while, you see something so depressing you just can’t get over it. Today’s overdramatic example: Kid from Kid ‘N Play is now hawking suits for what looks to be the cheapest, tackiest piece of crap store I’ve seen in a long time. And I live in Brooklyn. I’ve seen cheap ass stores. And what’s worse (though certainly not surprising), the commercial has landed on YouTube and is super awkward. You can’t even laugh or chuckle because you just feel so mortified for the guy. I had to look away at several points.

Christopher “Kid” Reid of Kid ‘n Play and awesome hi-top fade fame has a new improved hustle: hawking 2-for-1 suits on television. Yes, this is real. Also, yes, this is simultaneously the funniest and most pathetic thing in a minute.

“I’m here to tell you something,” explains the self-proclaimed actor and stand-up comedian. “It’s not always about that hip-hop house party stuff. Sometimes you gotta get clean. You’re trying to take your lady out, take your mother out, one of your homeboys got shot…You got things to do, and you can’t wear shorts and flip-flops.”

Besides that homeboy line falling somewhere between a collar-tugging joke and just plain atrocious, the bit is simply so bad it’s sort of amazing. Also, who is wearing shorts and flip-flops on a date? Come on, Kid, keep it reasonable at least.

“Come in looking like a bum, and leave looking like me,” he offers and then points off camera. “Oh yeah, excuse me, I got women over there. Don’t hate!”

Sorry, Mr. Reid. In one minute, you’ve given us at least a day’s worth of material to hate on. Good work, though.

Ack, the discomfort! There is seriously not one single second that isn’t awkward and embarrassing. On the one hand, you feel really badly for the guy. I mean his life cannot be going even a little bit okay if he’s doing this. On the other hand, it’s hard not to disrespect Kid for being involved in the project, whatever the reason. At every possible turn they went for the dumbest lines, the cheesiest acting… the whole thing is a mess. I feel badly for the guy but come on, anything’s better than this.

    At least he’s working.

  2. Dorothy says:

It is not that bad and maybe he is friends with the owner!

  3. Legend says:

i love that line: “and i live in brooklyn”. can’t fault him for making an honest living — it beats the reality show circuit.

  4. gooniegirl says:

Funny he still says “from Kid N Play” 🙂 I guess when you had something successful you may as well milk it to the end! When’s the last time they even did anything as a group? Speaking of…what ever happened to ‘Play’?

I do agree though – at least he’s making an honest living. That alone gives him a few extra respect points!

I get the impression that those who work outside the entertainment industry (whether it’s by choice or not) after any length of time are treated like pariahs or convicted felons.

  6. Sudini says:

I think it took guts for him to do that. It couldn’t have been easy for him to take such a low budge offer, and he had to know people would see it and compare it to his former success. I say good for him – and I agree Legend 🙂 At least he’s not doing reality tv!

  7. Shelly Shellz says:

@ Gooniegirl – “Play” became a born-again Christian, and devoted his time to working on Christian-based hip-hop music projects. He also founded HP4Digital Works, a multimedia production company.

I didn’t think it was that bad. I chuckled a few times too. I think Kid looks great and sounds good too. Good for him for having a job and maybe all the buzz about this commercial – good or bad – will get him some other work.

I thought it was pretty well done and also kinda humorous,,,now on to the ass crackin (my favorite part). Brother has some small ass hands. Not that means anything,,,probably means he has small feet too. WINK WINK NUDGE Anybody remember his tune Ain’t gonna hurt nobody? I always thought that was a snappy song and still to this day I will sing it around the crib. (hey, it ain’t gonna hurt nobody). He may need to check and see if he has that skin disease that MJ claimed to have though. I think that their last album was around 91 so brother gotta make a living somehow. Maybe next year he can move up to Men’s Warehouse,,,I guarantee it!

No way am I going to knock the guy for doing an honest job. I like him for doing it. I LOVE him for not exploiting some personal issue or his family members on the reality circuit.

  11. Aspie says:

LOL! It wasn’t that bad at all, it was very funny in fact because of his self-deprecating humor about the whole situation. He’s in on the “joke”. He even tell viewers at the beginning of the commercial “you’re probably wondering what I’m doing here…”

The guys is a comedian and he knows what he’s doing. At least he’s doing something constructive with his time.

Its not uncomfortable– its a standup routine. 🙂
Kudos for being real, relatable, down to earth and not trying to live an illusion…

oh, ouch. that was really rough. it’s like when you see your brother get shot down by a girl, then try to recover by saying something lame like, “yea i wasn’t really serious anyway!” or like when you see someone “wave back” to someone who wasn’t really waving at them, and then they realize it. damn, i hate that feeling of being embarrassed for someone. i need to shower or something.

Can’t wait to hear more from the other guy from Kid and Play (other than Reid). He was ofter seen as being the more impressive character. He had the right touches on styls, a smooth delivery and was in touch with the general public, rather than a side show. If this guy becomes a major feature, both would get great exposure. He might be able to stand alone as well.
