Time Magazine has announced their Person of the Year. I thought for sure it would be the frontline workers, the doctors and nurses who have been working through a deadly pandemic. But no, they chose Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Time usually gives their POTY honor to the person who just won the American presidency – Obama, Trump, Bush all got POTY when they were elected too. It’s slightly different because of Kamala’s inclusion – usually it’s just the incoming president, but clearly, Kamala Harris’s candidacy on a national ticket, and the fact that she’s the first woman to hold national office in America, makes her POTY as well. Here’s an excerpt from Time’s lengthy POTY profile:
As Biden sees it, trusting his instincts and tuning out the naysayers is a big reason why he’s going to be the next Commander in Chief. They said he was too old, too unsteady, too boring. That his pledge to restore the “soul of the nation” felt like antiquated hokum at a moment when Hurricane Trump was tearing through America, ripping through institutions, chewing up norms and spitting them out. “I got widely criticized,” Biden recalls, for “saying that we had to not greet Trump with a clenched fist but with more of an open hand. That we weren’t going to respond to hate with hate.” To him, it wasn’t about fighting Trump with righteous vengeance, or probing any deeper rot that might have contributed to his ascent. Biden believed most voters simply wanted reconciliation after four years of combat, that they craved decency, dignity, experience and competence. “What I got most criticized for was, I said we had to unite America,” he says. “I never came off that message.”
I love my dude Joe and I agree that Americans were hungry for the simplicity of Biden’s message and candidacy – the consistency, the decency, even the wonky work ethic. It’s been a fascist soap opera for four years and people were burned out. That being said, I don’t think the takeaway from the success of the Biden-Harris ticket is that everyone needs to find common ground with these f–king Nazis now. And if there is common ground, those Nazis are the ones who need to do the soul-searching and coming to Jesus. THEY are the ones who need to make changes.
You can read the rest of Time’s piece here. Other Time POTYs: LeBron James (athlete of the year), BTS (entertainers of the year), Anthony Fauci & frontline medical staffs (guardians of the year) along with racial-justice organizers Assa Traoré in Paris and Porche Bennett-Bey in Kenosha, Wisconsin (guardians of the year).

Remember all the fake Time magazine covers Trump printed with his face on the cover and plastered all over his office? He’s going to be so pissed by this and I love it.
Ha! I remember the bogus covers, and I am thinking how this will be stinging the orange lump of loser. Everything that takes away a bit more of that piece of schitt’s foundation is alright by me.
This is absolutely the best, he must be raging. It is a pity that the health workers didn’t get it, but “the worst ever candidate” and a (fill in the derogatory comment) black woman wining must be even more hard for him to digest – so a big thumbs up from me. Hopefully the health workers and research scientists will get it next year, once the pandemic has been stopped.
My first thought was “Woo-hoo! Someone’s throwing a bigly tantrum right now!” To know he was in the running for person of the year and that we was knocked off the cover by the person who whupped his ass at the ballot box, AND a blisteringly intelligent, motivated, fearless, outspoken WOC? I’m in heaven.
Yes. This cover was made for exactly one person to see, and I love it.
Germany’s “Der Spiegel” named him “Loser of the Year”. He can frame that cover for his office.
I love it!
I believe the frontline workers should have been person of the year.
Joe also said he wanted to beat trump up behind the barn or something? I can’t recall the exact words but he definitely said it. So, it wasn’t all open hands, but okay. And no I’m not extending my hand to these crazies, it’s not happening. I wish him luck, I do think the country needs to be more united, but I am not the peacemaker in the scenario, and also, I don’t think it can happen. We’re off the rails and the train isn’t coming back. IMO.
I agree it should have been the frontline workers.
Gosh. I think it should’ve been essential workers, including teachers. Joe and Kamala would’ve been a better choice for next year.
That being said, I thoroughly appreciate the angst this undoubtedly gives Trump. And they did defeat him, which is the beginning of the end of our long national (honesty: worldwide) nightmare.
+1
I’m glad they got the cover, even more so because you know it p*sses off Trump. And yes, reconciliation is not a bad goal, but it’s on the Trump supporters to take a long hard look at themselves first. I cannot and will not try to find “common ground” with people who think black and brown lives matter less than white ones.
Yes, reconciliation has to come from BOTH sides, they need to look at their attitudes, it’s not just that we need to forget how awful they were/are.
Should’ve been the healthcare worker.
They went from being heralded to jeered all while keeping their noses to the grind to ensure our safety and health.
Definitely agree with others that it should have been essential workers but I am happy about the rage this probably gives the orange one
And Texas just filed a lawsuit with SCOTUS to overturn these results. Zodiac Killer Rafael “call me Ted” Cruz has offered to argue the case.
Don’t blobfishes expire when they’re out of water? Any volunteers to return this particular specimen to the briny deeps?
+1 to everyone who said it should have been the healthcare workers. Not that I dislike Joe and Kamala and don’t think they deserve it but healthcare workers have pretty much put their life on the line during this pandemic and often, being underpaid to boot
And they’re still doing it, day after day after day, to the detriment of their own health and sanity. Heroes, and far too often unsung.
I thought it should have been Fauci and the healthcare workers. But, I do think Biden and Harris together was a good pick.
I do get what Biden is saying and its one of the reasons why I did think he was going to win – people are just TIRED. the suburban moms that Trump wanted to vote for him? We’re effing TIRED. This year has been awful and Trump’s stupid tweets just make it more awful. Even people I know who voted for him 2016 were just like “man, stop.” and didn’t vote for him this year.
But I don’t think being tired of the divide and being over the negativity and wanting a return to some political normalcy means we have to meet them in the middle. It just means I don’t want to worry about our president starting a nuclear war on twitter.
I thought it would be healthcare workers but I think they did this to troll trump and I’m ok with it.
I love Biden and Harris, but frontline workers are the POTY to me.
Cue in 1-2-3: Trump meltdown – Biden + Kamala + LeBron + Fauci !!! This is just going to enrage him. Of course you’d think he has better stuff to do but given that he’s given up any pretense of actually doing his job as President, I predict this will be his focus in the next hours… sigh.
Frontline workers and Dr Fauci were named Guardian(s) of the Year, which is completely appropriate considering Time specifically defines Person of the Year as not necessarily a good thing – it’s not supposed to be an honor. Person of the Year is quantitative, Guardian of the Year is qualitative. To me, Guardian of the Year appropriately reflects the selfless nature of the work healthcare workers have done this year and the gratitude they deserve.
Fauci has his own cover and everything, which you know made trump even madder than he was at joe and kamala in the first place.
I also did a quick search and found that Time did five covers of frontline workers for April, along with coverage in depth.
When I saw this my first thought is “ohnthebTweet storm is coming.” The. I realized in just a few more weeks we won’t have to worry about this anymore!!! 👏👏👏👏👏🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾
I love them. I voted for them. But i believe POTY should have gone to the unsung heroes of the pandemic, the store emoloyees, cashiers, housekeepers and janitors, bus drivers, fast food employees, stock people, delivery drivers.
Agreed
I like to pretend that they included Trump on that list of nominees to troll him and make him lose another thing to Biden and Kamala 🙂
👏👏
Agree with most here. Frontline workers, scientists and essential unsung heroes that work in stores etc. would have been great. Have a brother that is a Dr, sister in law a nurse and my Godfather came out of retirement to go back into medicine for Covid pro bono. And they all have sacrificed I have seen it, as so many wonderful others have too. Their lives have been hell but they do it. So yes, they are all wonderful. But not gonna lie, I love Joe and Kamala and am happy they got it. Joe is on now, speaking about more appointees. Man, this guy is what we need right now. (And yes, Trump and Ivanka too are very displeased with this choice, we know it 🙂 GOOD. Hang in there everybody, love ya all.
Love it… bag of popcorn and start watching trumps favourite social media platform.. for just a bit, no use wasting anymore time on him..
