Angelina Jolie makes UN goodwill trip to Kenya, talks cholera

angelina1
On Saturday, Angelina Jolie made a day-long trip to the world’s largest refugee camp, the Dadaab camp on the Kenyan side of the Kenyan-Somali border. The camp is made up of 285,000 Somali refugees that have been streaming across the border since the 1990s, when Somalia became, in effect, a failed state, or a terrorist haven/narco-kleptocracy, whatever we’re calling it these days.

The Dadaab refugeee camp is actually three large, conjoined camps that host approximately 90,000 people each. Angelina toured all three, speaking with refugees and calling attention to issues like access to fresh, clean water and waste disposal, where the lack of both is enabling cholera to run rampant. Jolie noted, “The toilets are already overflowing. There is not even enough space for trash dumps so people are living amongst the garbage… with up to 7,000 refugees arriving from Somalia each month and rain on the horizon, they say it will be hard to contain the next outbreak.”

Jolie’s visit comes one month after the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres visited the camp and made an appeal for additional funding to improve the sanitation issues, and to help care for the thousands of refugees arriving every week. My guess is that Guterres’ visit didn’t make the kind of headlines needed to jump-start a donor-drive, so they sent Angelina:

12 September 2009 – Visiting the world’s largest refugee camp, housing refugees from Somalia, on the Horn of Africa nation’s border with Kenya, Academy award-winning actress and Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations refugee agency Angelina Jolie today characterized the site as “one of the most dire” she has ever seen.

“If this is the better solution, then what must it be like in Somalia?” Ms. Jolie asked during her day-long visit to Dabaab, one of three camps that together were designed for 90,000 people but now host some 285,000 refugees.

Children ran to greet her as she made her way to the new arrivals area, where she met a young women with three small children with distended stomachs and streaming noses who just reached the camp in Kenya after walking for days to flee Somalia, where half the population – or some 3.8 million people – are in need of aid.

The Goodwill Ambassador saw first-hand the daily reality of life in Dabaab, where women and children line up for hours every day at water taps which are turned off for hours.

“The the toilets are already overflowing,” she observed. “There is not even enough space for trash dumps so people are living amongst the garbage.”

Ms. Jolie was told of a cholera outbreak earlier this year by staff from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at the camp, where some families who have made their homes there for years are hosting newly-arrived refugees.

“What is amazing is that as more and more people come into the camp, the Somali families continue to be generous with what little they have, even if that means having one eighth of the water they need and their children suffering from dehydration,” she said.

At the end of her visit, Ms. Jolie noted that “the Somali families I met today are full of warmth and affection. I wish more people could meet them [because] then they would have a stronger desire to help.”

When he visited Dabaab last month, High Commissioner António Guterres was assured by the Kenyan Government that it understood the urgency of granting additional land to alleviate overcrowding at the site.

Mr. Guterres, who called Dabaab the “most difficult camp situation in the world,” pledged UNHCR’s support in the interim to boost the refugees’ living conditions by upgrading the aging water and sanitation systems, increasing health services and providing adequate shelter and nutrition.

He also committed an additional $20 million for refugees and the host community in Dabaab, calling for massive international donor support.

UNHCR has recently begun moving 12,000 refugees to the Kakuma camp in northern Kenya as an emergency measure for new arrivals.

[From the United Nations News Service]

I didn’t know the Dadaab refugee camp was the largest refugee camp in the world – I really thought (and still think) there are probably larger camps in Pakistan (housing hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees) and Chad (housing the more than one million Sudanese refugees). Perhaps the Afghan and Sudanese refugees haven’t been placed in one centralized camp, though? That could be it, a technicality.

I know there are a lot of people who think Angelina just makes the goodwill trips for her own publicity reasons, but I disagree. She became a UNHCR goodwill ambassador back in 2001, which is a long time to stick with something this depressing if your heart’s not in it. Plus, at this point, I don’t think Angelina is even choosing where she goes on most of her visits. I think the trips have been planned to the last detail, and the UNHCR simply knows how to use their most public, headline-making representative, and they ask her to go to specific, targeted regions or camps when they have a political, financial and/or humanitarian agenda to push at a certain time.

I applaud her work for the UN. She does need to eat though, my lord she’s skinny.

  2. Anak says:

    So thin as the refugees…

  3. DonnaInMichigan says:

It’s pretty ironic that those refugee’s look more healthy then that multi-millionaire UN Ambassador!

  4. cee says:

I think she is doing good work and it surprises me the hostility from some people. People who actually know Angelina seem to have wonderful opinions of her and of Brad and their beautiful families. Is that what everyone is jealous of? Kepp up the good works Brad and Angie.

  5. Randy says:

Brad sleeps with a bag of bones. Yuck!

  6. ziek says:

she is doing it for good pr. her people back then said it would be good for you if you do this for your public image, so she did. it is somewhere on the internet, i don’t remember if it was a written article or a interview. Look it up, i don’t have the time now to look it up.

And she needs to eat!!! The refugees look better then her!!!!!

  7. Beth says:

I wish the haters would get new insults. The “she’s too thin” attacks are old and boring. Even when a pre-Brad photo is posted the haters say she’s too thin, probably not realizing the photo was old. The only time I felt she was too thin was 2007. I’m sure there will be tons of “she’s only there for the publicity” posts which I don’t understand. She’s done this way too long and writing a check is a lot easier and will get the same amount of publicity. Plus going to refugee camps so often must be hard emotionally. Angelina could just go to all of those charity dinners, auctions, races instead.

  8. Randy says:

The “she’s too thin” attacks are not old – they’re true therefore it’s an ongoing (and serious health) problem. Eat Angelina, please!

  9. lola says:

    love you angi…go girl!!!!!

  10. sarah says:

So, her PR people have been telling her for 8 years to do this charity work? The United Nations, one of the world’s most respected organizations, is in on the PR stunt? #6, it seems like all you do with your time is scan websites looking to throw more insults at her. So, please, when you make a claim like that, back it up. By the way, Jennifer doesn’t love you any more when you chastize Angelina. I don’t think she’s calling you up for coffee.

  11. jules says:

putting in a couple of days through the year for a few photo ops (while being flown in first class and treated like visiting royalty) does not a humanitarian make… people who are on the ground 365 days a year in dirty, sick conditions giving vaccines and delivering supplies are the real heros. to try and claim that title with a few pampered visits a year is dishonorable to say the least.

  12. Praise St. Angie! says:

    she IS too thin.

it has nothing to do with “attacking” her…for crying out loud, just look at the pictures! Bony arms, bony shoulders…she doesn’t look healthy.

I think what she does for the UN is admirable, and a wonderful thing, but that doesn’t mean I’ll overlook what I perceive to be an unhealthy weight for this woman.

Christ, you brangeloonies need to get OVER yourselves. yes, she does good work. and yes, she looks too thin. one is not exclusive of the other.

  13. H says:

Funny, I never seen any quotes from Angelina were she declared herself humanitarian of the year or anything. She goes where they ask her to go. If you read the article, the UN high commissioner had been there first but in our celebrity obsessed culture that wasn’t really reported on. They sent her to get attention and it worked. I imagine she would agree that the people who work 24/7 are the real heros. And before I get called a Brangeloonie, I’m not, I’ve never even commented on one of their threads before but the vitrol just is getting ridiculous.

  14. Anna P. says:

Dear Jules, #11, warmest thanks from a former aid worker!

  15. Ana says:

I am a big fan, but I still think she is too thing. She has lost her fabulous breasts! She is still beautiful and amazing.

  16. Diane says:

Her appearance seems to direct fianancial aid from the UN, so it serves a purpose.

(Neither martyr or heroine, just another person with a directed interest = )

  17. Lady Jane says:

Does anyone else think it is weird that she chose to wear a black see-through t-shirt that just hangs off her and exposes her collar bones, accentuating her gauntness? I mean, I think she WANTS to look this bone-thin, whatever the reason. I am convinced that nothing this woman does in an accident – she is a mastermind of her own PR. And how well she does it…

  18. jules says:

Why are there always cameras following her to record her visits to these refugees? Is it PR for the refugees’ cause or PR for Angelina herself??? It’s a bit suspicious to me, many people/celebrities do good works and it is not publicized on a regular basis.

  19. Mairead says:

Jules, it’s the United Nations that arranges the cameras for their publicity. If you notice the photocredits on each image, they all include UNHCR. The images are often used on their own website. So it’s not her own private posse of press or random paps or even local news media. They’re not sending her out there because they’re bored and she wants good press – it’s part of the UNHCR’s marketing, for the want of a better word.

And I understand the frustration of (former) aid workers. Ideally there shouldn’t be a cause to work with in the first place. But it must put those on the ground out that in any charity, the workers are ignored for a celeb that turns up, says a few prepared words, pouts with a charity mug or whatever, and their efforts are made to feel nought.

Unfortunately, especially with provincial media, dollybirds make the papers far more often, and to meet a launch deadline than when it suits the paper to fill up space.

On the weight issue, I actually think there are other actresses out there as thin as her, and she did used to be much thinner. But I agree with the Antilinas that she does look too thin for her – being that skinny doesn’t suit her face and makes her look unhealthy. She looks fabulous when she’s a little bigger.

  20. kim says:

Congrats Angie on being named Guinness Book of World Records most powerful actress for the second year in a row. She doesn’t need to go to refugee camps over 35 in over 20 countries for PR. The cameras are with her to publicize the plight of the refugees. Jules, The cameras follow Drew Barrymore, Nicole Kidman, Salma, Lucy Liu, Clooney and every other celeb UN ambassador. Do you criticize them too I doubt it?That’s their job to promote awareness to their causes.Congrats IB cast and crew, IB has grossed $204 million worlwide.

  21. lrm says:

it’s not for PR for her,but for the cause. which is why she will agree to certain trips,IF they will generate alot of publicity-ie,she has to pick and choose, and receives alot of invitations.
Also, she’s an ambassador for the UN,so I’m sure they take precedence.

I lived in kenya for a couple of years, and got a coule of friends jobs at an organization that processes refugee apps there. They actually had to live at dadaab for months for part of the gig! NOT a pretty place-even for the workers, who admittedly have slightly better digs. But it’s not great, just a step above camping, with locust swarms and all the disease that comes with camp life with no formal facilities.
Still, the stories of people walking days to get there with diseases unimaginable-is far worse.
And,let’s not get started on the treatment of women, and the rapes that occur in these camps.
i dont knwo what good AJ’s publicity will do-b/c the situation has been this way for so long. [my dates mentioned are from the mid 90’s]…but,maybe the awareness will do some good.

Don’t know what, exactly, when the US supplied somalia with their arms, and inf act are responsible for that underground network of weaponry there.
What kind of weapons do you think the somalis used against the US? well, american made,of course!
back when we armed them for the big bad fight against russia.
Just like we are now doing with sudan in protection against china-which is an economic threat mor ethan anything.

you have to wonder if these policies are ever really thought out in terms of long term effect,or if history is studied?

  22. Josephina says:

I see that my earlier post was “unde moderation,” but it has pretty much the same message as Irm and Mairead, that there are extremely disadvantaged persons living under extreme conditions, unlike anything in the U.S. Angie’s role is bring attention to the denial of basic human righs that we as Americans take for granted. And she does a great job using her celebrity status and status as an Ambassador to get some of us to become affected enough to make a change or a difference if not in the refugees’ lives, then maybe somewhere closer to home.

  23. Maritza says:

She is risking her health by going to sites where there is so many sick people with contagious diseases.

  24. whatever says:

I agree Jules, it’s not fair to have the celeb swoop in. But, it’s a celeb-obsessed world. So, they are able to drum up the attention, or “goodwill” the ordinary folks can’t. It’s the system that should be blamed here.

As for Angelina, she’s done this for 10 yrs, I believe? Each time she goes, it’s a risk to her life. In addition, she donates money, so that also adds to her efforts.

Most other celebs seem content to write a minor check, show up to a charity ball in fancy clothes schmoozing with other celebs, or shoot a 20 second commercial. If that’s what passes as being “charitable” in Hollywood, then what Angie does is admirable, by comparison.

  25. Shanny says:

“She’s too thin” is not an insult it is a fact. She needs to get help.

Yes her people did tell her to do humaitarian work to change her imagine, it is also a fact, angie actually said it with her own mouth in an interview. I read the article, more than once.

there are so many other celeb un aide workers, charlize theron mike douglas….Angie seems to be the only one that brings her own photog and distibutes her visits nationally for PR, the others keep it quiet.

  26. Shanny says:

“She’s too thin” is not an isult it is a fact. She needs to get help.

Yes, her people did tell her to do humanitarian work to change her image, it is also a fact, angie said it with her own mouth in an interview, Iread the article.

There are so many other celeb aide workers, they just don’t go around bringing their personal photogs and distributing the pics everywhere, the keep it low key, probably because they are doing it from the heart and not for other reasons…

  27. Shanny says:

Just wanted to add if angie really cared sooo much about these people she should have had some respect in her attire, this see thru shirt, with her arms exposed and her bra showing is not acceptable for their culture, angie doesn’t seem to respect their culture.

  28. kim says:

She can stand to gain 15 lbs , I can stand to lose 15 lbs. That’s life. As for her attire, did you critisize Salma with her breasts hanging out while on a UN trip in Sierre Leone? Should she have worn that tight low cut white t shirt

  29. 4Real says:

Leave Salma alone she actually helped a desperate refugee mom by breast-feeding her child.

  30. Cecilia says:

She must be feeling guilty over the fact that all of those people are starving, whilst she herself has the oppurtunity to live in abundance. It’s just like any other mother that would rather see herself starve instead of her own children.

That’s most likely why she has dropped weight during these kind of missions.

I really hope she get’s a bit more healty now though. Seeing as she has dropped to that weight once again. She wont be helping herself, her children or anyone for the matter in such a prolonged sickly state.
