Lindsay Lohan got an actual acting job, on a Netflix Christmas romcom

I’ve been seeing tweets excited about a Lohanaissance after this news, to which I say “wait a minute.” We haven’t heard much about Lindsay Lohan since she got sued by Harper Collins last fall for accepting a $365k advance on a book she never delivered. Lindsay has been trying different money-making schemes, like Cameo, NFTs, making music and getting sponsors. Now she’s going to go back to acting. Lindsay got a bonafide acting gig in a Netflix Christmas movie. Did they not review her long record of costing productions money and running businesses into the ground before hiring her? Lindsay said in January of last year that she was planning to move back to the states to act again and that sounds like it’s working out. She was in Dubai just last week though so we’ll see.

Lindsay Lohan, who has largely foregone acting in recent years, will soon star in a yet-to-be-titled Netflix holiday rom-com. The streamer has made a robust business out of Christmas fare, and its original movies such as “Jingle Jangle,” “A Christmas Prince,” “The Christmas Chronicles” and “The Princess Switch” (inspired by Lohan’s “The Parent Trap”) have become instant (and repeatable) holiday classics.

In this new movie, Lohan will play a “newly engaged, spoiled hotel heiress” (according to the logline), who gets amnesia after a skiing accident and “finds herself in the care of a handsome, blue-collar lodge owner and his precocious daughter in the days leading up to Christmas.” The rest of the cast has not yet been announced.

[From Variety]

If this actually gets made I would watch it! I like Christmas romance movies and Netflix has some decent ones including the ones mentioned in the article like The Knight Before Christmas, The Princess Switch, The Holiday Calendar and Operation Christmas Drop. Holidate, with Emma Roberts, was pretty good and seemed like a film that could get a theater release. I don’t think Lohan’s movie is going to be on that level though. This sounds more like Christmas Inheritance, which was still highly watchable I enjoyed it. This is Lohan though, she’s going to cost twice as much in production because she’s unprofessional and late when she shows up at all. I hope they have good insurance.

It looks like they’re filming now although this could just be a photoshoot.

    Good for her I guess.

    • Renata says:

Yeah. Considering the number of male divas/addicts who still get work, let Lindsay get her shot.

  2. Case says:

Once upon a time she was a pretty decent actress. Hope she doesn’t blow this opportunity – a good experience with Netflix could open more doors for her.

I am NOT a Christmas romcom person but me and my friend do watch them so we can make fun of the silliness they provide. 😂 I quite liked Midnight at the Magnolia; that was our most recent virtual watch.

  3. Bess says:

Has any person ever received as many “second” chances as Lindsay Lohan?

  4. Oh_Hey says:

As a millennial fan of Lindsay from the old days I’ve been rooting for her to get off drugs and fake European accents for decades. I’m going to watch this movie if it ever gets made and keep my fingers crossed.

    • Tom says:

Already planning the snacks menu for my watching party. Greek, Russian, and Abu Dhabi munchies and a pitcher of Morgue Duty, a custom craft cocktail

    • JennyF says:

Me too. I cannot explain why after all this time, I still have a soft spot for her.

  5. Von Wilcher II says:

So basically “Overboard” during Christmas…..sign me up!

    • Ann says:

Exactly what I was thinking. But I liked Overboard and I like these Xmas movies so it sounds fun. And she is a good actress, when she chooses to be, so hopefully they’ll pull it off.

    • Bettyrose says:

Yep. Except Overboard didn’t age well at all. High maintenance woman tamed and relegated to domestic servitude. Twist? She loves it!

    • lucy2 says:

I thought of that as well. Kind of amazing anyone would attempt that type of story again, considering now everyone realizes how problematic it was, and the remake from a few years ago tanked.

While I’m sure she will cause problems, delays, etc, it’s probably a good move for Netflix. They probably offered her very low pay and have good insurance, and will get a ton of free publicity just by attaching her name. Reviewers will race to skewer it, and viewers will tune in to see how messy it is.

  6. Atti says:

She is a mess but also a very good actress. I will 100% watch this movie.

  7. Cait says:

Wow Bennifer and Lindsay Lohan stories in one day – is it 2003 again? That’d be great. Erase these last few years and start over with some vintage gossip.

  8. RN says:

I wouldn’t bother watching her – she’s become quite wooden over time. I want my holiday movies to be escapist and LL is a sobering reminder of what addiction does to the body, mind and spirit.

  9. Mia4s says:

“ Lindsay Lohan, who has largely foregone acting in recent years”

I love how this sentence makes it sound like it was her choice. Like she’s been working for Doctors Without Borders or something. Give me a break. 🙄

Thoughts and prayers in advance to the male lead.

    • Renata says:

There are too many B to Z movies for you to genuinely believe this. If she wanted to work, she could. It may be for Russian money laundering VoD productions like Eric Roberts or guest appearances in Asian soap operas but she could get work if she wanted. People seem to think that the only acting work available is in top tier Hollywood.

  10. Bettyrose says:

    She was so beautiful.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Her filler face is weirding me out.

      • bettyrose says:

I guess we’ll never know what might have been and if she would have transitioned successfully into adult roles, but I was a fan and I like to think the version of Lindsay that starred in Mean Girls would have grown into a badass adult actress with stunning red hair and a trademark husky voice.

      • JennyF says:

I think in the photo with the duck face she looks more natural, like her old self somewhat, again?

      • bettyrose says:

She looks fresh-faced and un-tweaked in that photo. Not sure what to make of it.

  11. Amelie says:

I won’t hold my breath she will actually be in it and won’t be replaced by the likes of Emma Stone but the premise sounds wonderfully cheesy and Hallmarky and I’m all for it!

    • Normades says:

Yeah I’d bet money that this either never gets made or she’s replaced. She’s blown every one of her hundreds of second chances.

Also I disagree that she’s a good actress. She had lots of charisma when she was a kid, but even in mean girls she was totally upstaged by the other actresses. Rachel and Amanda are far superior actors who put in the work and had successful careers.

  12. nicegirl says:

I hope she pulls through her addictions. I will watch this Netflix movie.

  13. ce says:

Can’t wait for the inevitable stories about her showing up late, not showing up at all to set, causing an unprofessional ruckus, people quitting, budget not covering her tardiness… guess it was more fun to read about before I thought about all the people getting hurt behind the scenes

  14. Snuffles says:

I’m a sucker for a Netflix holiday rom com, so I will probably watch. And I still religiously watch Mean Girls to this day. Lindsay was a decent actress back in the day. She might have had a similar career to Scarlet Johansson if it wasn’t for her terrible parents screwing her up.

She’s still a hot mess but I wish no ill will. Good luck to her.

Oh, and while I’m here, I will recount my personal encounter with her when I live in LA. I was at a very small club/live performances venue which was packed to the gills that night. I was standing against a wall and she was sitting at the table next to me. LA has a no smoking inside rule but she was secretly trying to smoke and kept dropping her arm to hide her cigarette right next to my pants. Eventually got fed up, tapped her on the shoulder and politely asked her to put it out before she set me on fire. She looked completely shocked that I asked her to. She was like “Are you serious!?” I said yes, and I would get the manager if she didn’t. Then she acquiesced and apologized. Then later that evening she ran over a paparazzi after she left the club.

    • BeanieBean says:

Oh, my! That’s exactly the kind of encounter I would have expected! Your final sentence was the perfect ending. Thanks for sharing.

    • FHMom says:

      Great encounter. Thanks for sharing.

  15. Eleonor says:

I think she is the new Courtney Love.

    • Meg says:

      Whew spot on

    • MerlinsMom1018 says:

Nah. Courtney at her absolute messiest was nowhere near the train wreck Lohan was/may still be, and Courtney was/may still be messy…
As an aside, I loved Courtney’s band Hole and still do. The song Celebrity Skin is on my playlist and on.a continuous loop.

  16. Plums says:

It’s sad how much of an absolute mess she became. She was a talented actress who could have had a really solid career if she wasn’t such a human disaster. Hopefully she was able to work through whatever issues she had because if she hasn’t, I don’t foresee any career comeback for her, no matter how many chances Hollywood gives her to be a sympathetic, rehabilitated former child star.

    • Meg says:

I dont believe she has worked through her entitlement issues. If so ill believe it when i see it

    • jwoolman says:

Maybe she wasn’t ever going to progress as an actor as she became an adult and was so much less easily directable. Much less is expected of children, the ability to cry on command is the most important thing. This happens to many child actors.

She was the weakest member of the cast in Mean Girls and was pretty awful in her movie with Herbie the Volkswagen when she was about 18 or 19. Yes, the car was a better actor.

I remember the promos for a tv movie a few years later where she was playing Elizabeth Taylor and she was absolutely horrible. Not even high school play level. Saw her in late night skits, and she was so bad it was painful watching her. Saw her in a tv sitcom and she was likewise unbelievable.

Reviews of her work in that London play much later were stunned that she did actually religiously show up for rehearsals and for the performances, but she was wooden. She had trouble remembering her lines and also showed no responsiveness when the focus was on another actor. She may not have understood the script very well. And yet it was clear that she was really trying very hard that time.

So although hope springs eternal, even if she does show up regularly for this TV movie – she may not have the real acting ability to be successful. The director will have to be a genius to get a decent performance out of her, I’m afraid. If the director has experience working with young children, that will be an asset. I’m just not convinced that her drug use was her only problem as an actor, if it were then she would have done much better in the London play. She may have just never had the real goods and was successful only in very carefully chosen roles, as is the case for child actors in general but might also be so for adults. But adults are expected to understand scripts much better than children, who can be coached scene by scene by a skilled director.

Even if Lindsey were playing a side character rather than a lead – having a really poor actor in a movie does hit such a false note that it badly affects the whole movie. I saw this happen when Lindsay’s younger sister (who was always a terrible wooden actor) was pushed into a speaking role in a kid tv movie – everyone else was fine, but she dragged it down. Her casting made no sense. She never would have won the role in an open audition, they were trying to capitalize on her sister’s fame. But acting was definitely not in her skill set, not even at child actor level.

And when Drew Barrymore insisted on doing the voice of the main character in the animated Olive the Other Reindeer (which was her project), she dragged that down also because she is a very poor voice actor. Again, the rest of the cast was fine. I remember thinking that Olive’s role should be revoiced by a real voice actor if they intended to run it again. Drew was really that bad. But it was her project and nobody could say no to her. Voice acting is a skill that some live actors have but many don’t. It’s not like reading a book to your kids.

      • Normades says:

Jwoolman – perfect summary. I said the same above that I really don’t think she was a good actress to begin with. She just got lucky to have snagged iconic roles when she was young because she was plucky and charismatic (interesting side note she won the parent trap role over ScarJo).

So even if she wasn’t a complete train wreck of a person I don’t think she would have had an A list career because she didn’t/doesn’t have the talent.

And yes, she was the weakest link in mean girls.

  17. Ariel says:

Production doesn’t start until November, so i guess it is for Christmas 2022?
Let’s not put any money on that.
    Bless her heart.

  18. Coco says:

Prince Charles funded a secret campaign to get her hired, because Lohan is the only person alive who could bring down Netflix…from the inside!

  19. Mia says:

I guess Netflix can afford to pay actor insurance *shrug*

  20. Dierski says:

‘Lohanaissance’ made me giggle, but all I can really think is: Return of The Cracken!

    Crackenaissance??

Really though, good for her booking some real work. I hope it sticks and she does well!

  21. lemontwist says:

Hellll no thank you. I never really had a connection with her early work and then she just became a mess and has done/said some things that really didn’t sit right, i.e. her chiming in out of nowhere with support for Harvey Weinstein because “He’s never harmed me or did anything to me.” Most of all, that awful video where she accosted the refugee family who were sleeping outside, then followed them (as they were forced to move to try to get away from her) and finally tried to grab one of their children. Like, go watch that video again; her behavior towards that family is chilling (and telling).

I feel sorry for her as a human being; that she had messed up parents and clearly had/has addiction and mental health issues. But for decades she’s been given so many opportunities to ‘come back’, and has consistently shown her personality to be selfish and destructive, with little regard for other people. At this point she’s made her own bed and doesn’t seem at all likely to change. Hard pass.
