Dr. Jill Biden covers Vogue: ‘I feel as though people can breathe again’

Vogue did right by Dr. Jill Biden. Better than they did with Kamala Harris, frankly. It probably helped the magazine that Annie Leibovitz could take beautiful, scenic photos inside the White House. The cover is especially good, and Leibovitz also did some portraits of Jill and Joe Biden together, and some photos of the Bidens in the gardens of the White House – you can see Vogue’s full editorial here, along with the fantastic profile of Dr. Biden. Both President Biden and Dr. Biden come across like normal people here, “just folks” who happen to be good, decent, hardworking people. Joe even made me tear up a little bit when he joined Jill for part of the interview and he talked about how much he misses her because she’s always working and traveling around to help him out. Some highlights from the piece:

No one thought she could keep teaching as FLOTUS. “I heard that all the time during the campaign. Like, ‘No. You’re not going to be able to teach as first lady.’ And I said, ‘Why not? You make things happen, right?’”

Things feel more relaxed now that the Bidens are in office: “During the campaign, I felt so much anxiety from people; they were scared. When I travel around the country now, I feel as though people can breathe again. I think that’s part of the reason Joe was elected. People wanted someone to come in and heal this nation, not just from the pandemic, which I feel Joe did by, you know, getting shots in everybody’s arms. But also…he’s just a calmer president. He lowers the temperature.”

She taught a creative writing class for mostly men last semester: “Maybe two months ago they said, ‘Hey, Dr. B…. Can we ask you a question?’  ” I said yeah. They said, ‘When we write in our journals, can we curse?’ I don’t know what they thought! We never said the words first lady ever. So I said, ‘Yes, you can curse.’ Because I tell them they can write anything. And here they are, these young men, like, ‘Yes! We can curse!’ I loved that. After that class, I felt…good. I’ve achieved what I wanted to achieve: They see me as their English teacher.”

There is so much to do: “When I became second lady—and there was so much I wanted to do—I always said, ‘I will never waste this platform.’  And now I have a bigger platform and I feel every day, like….What could I give up? That I would want to give up? Nothing. If anything, I feel like adding more things, but I know it’s not possible, because you want to stay centered, because you want to do things well. And there’s so much to do. There is…so. Much. To. Do.”

Joe Biden on how the presidency has affected their marriage: “I miss her. I’m really proud of her. But it’s not like we can just go off like we used to. When we were living in Delaware and married, once a month we’d just go up to a local bed-and-breakfast by ourselves, to make sure we had a romantic time to just get away and hang out with each other.”

She’s wearing a lot of young, emerging, and diverse designers. “I think that’s important: You try to lift up other people. I like to choose from a diverse group of designers. When I was planning my Inauguration outfits, that’s one of the things I considered.”

She references the dogs too, because Champ was still alive when they did this interview, and she explained that Major just gets overexcited with all of the new people coming in and out. Both the president and first lady speak at length about how neither of them were really interested in the trappings of the presidency, the White House or the security or all the fuss. They reminisce about their old lives in Wilmington, going to the beach on the weekends or throwing parties and cookouts and such. They basically gave all that up to serve the nation and heal America after Trump. Anyway, she’s amazing and I love her.

Not to mention sleep without worry about the five disasters before lunchtime.

    • TEALIEF says:

+1 on this. Getting up each morning without worrying about what he who shall not be named had bubbled up in hell’s burrows to unleash on the country and world is a relief.

  2. Merricat says:

    I love Dr. Jill.
I guess this demonstrates the difference between a First/Second Lady and a keen duchess/ffqc.
Breathing and sleeping is easier, for sure.

  3. Lightpurple says:

I love this woman and I love that dress.

    • Seaflower says:

      +1

    • Kate says:

Also love this dress! I like what she says about choosing clothes in a way to uplift other people, although I also thought that her office stated they wouldn’t be giving designer credits. I wonder if they walked back on that in order to be able to support designers or if they just assume that people will figure it out on their own.

  4. Trillion says:

Biden was near the bottom of my list of potential candidates, but I must admit, he is impressing me so far and I’m pleasantly surprised.

  5. Normades says:

Haha, Dr. Jill got the cover Trump bigly wanted for Melania

    • MF1 says:

That was my first thought. Somewhere in Florida, Trump and Melania are crying big sad racist tears over this magazine cover.

    • Lightpurple says:

It’s Melania’s own fault she didn’t get the cover. The First Lady issue always includes an in-depth interview with the reporter spending several days shadowing the First Lady and Melania refused to grant any interview at all. No interview, no cover. When the pictures of Dr Biden’s cover were released a few weeks ago, lying Lara Trump was shooting her lying mouth off complaining and was put back in her place: Melania refused to do the interview and the rest of the Trump women are of no significance to merit covers either.

Although I am still healing from the past 4 years, it is has been such a weight lifted that 45 is no longer in Office. I love how “regular” the Bidens are.

And you know Melania is furious that Jill got a Vogue cover.

    Heehee

  7. Murphy says:

Hey if we can have a first lady who NEVER works, why can’t we have one that works double?

  8. lucy2 says:

I have so much respect and admiration for her. We’re very, very lucky to have her.
    Beautiful cover too.

I now go days without thinking about politics, the administration, or any of it. It’s such a relief. I still care and worry about the world and all that, but competency, expertise, and most important decency have returned.

    • Seaflower says:

      +1

    • Anne Call says:

I’m grateful but really scared about 2022. Very good chance that repubs will take back the house and maybe the senate. They are so insane that I really worry for this country and the Biden’s and Kamala and Doug.

      • Saucy&Sassy says:

I worry about the same thing, Anne. I just think we all may have to help out. Whether driving cross country to help people get to the polls or whatever is needed.

      • Soupie says:

I love Jill Biden and the President too. I worry about 2022 also. We have to fight back against voter suppression. So far it feels like they are winning and it’s not a good feeling. I just hope that things will come together so that voters will realize how much better off we are now. And Jill Biden is definitely part of that process. She’s such a class act.

  9. MF1 says:

I’m really, really, really happy we have a first lady who’s a good role model. It was hard to go from Michelle (a brilliant human being and total rockstar) to Melania. Dr. Biden seems like a good, kind, intelligent woman. And she looks gorgeous in that dress.

  10. Emily H says:

Beautiful cover for a beautiful woman, inside and out. I also love how Joe respects her and talks about her – and he always looks at her with such love. It is such a refreshing change from the Trump fake marriage and having to look at two of the most unintelligent, mean, nasty, soulless people. Every. Damn. Day.

She is right about what she says in the article, we all feel like we can breathe again.

    Bravo, DR. Biden!

And it is so wonderful and admirable that she is a woman of means, yet she chose and chooses to work and do something with her life, besides shop all day and get her nails done.

  11. MerlinsMom1018 says:

I stan FLOTUS Dr. Biden!!!! 💖
(Oh and her husband ain’t half bad either 😎)

  12. Ann says:

I married a man who loved and lost his first wife to cancer when she was 40. We met 5 years later. He’s a wonderful husband, and I love how Joe loves and respects Jill so much while loving the memory of his first wife too.

  13. JanetDR says:

Seeing her smiling face is such a delight!

  14. Marie says:

Beautiful cover. Love the dress – would wear.

  15. Margo says:

Why is it a status symbol for powerful women to be featured on Vogue? It’s a fashion magazine that doesn’t showcase influential men on the cover. Don’t get me wrong, I like fashion and powerful women, but I just don’t understand why a Vogue cover is that isn’t seen as sexist and pandering to women.

  16. april says:

The woman is 70 and looks gorgeous! She doesn’t appear to have had cosmetic surgery either. She’s doing something, though, and she looks fantastic. Her figure is great for her age also.

  17. Thirtynine says:

I didn’t know much about her but she sounds wonderful and the perfect person to have as First Lady right now. I’m really happy for you.

  18. Christine says:

I love the Bidens so much, and I don’t think I will ever be able to express in a real way, that makes sense, how much better I felt on January 20 than January 19. The photos are GORGEOUS!

  19. Ry says:

She’s very likable. Good energy and aura. People are more comfortable now, although Trump was like slowing down the car and watching a car wreck; you hated it but you had to look
We deserve some peace and proper reactions.
The last commander in orange was pure destruction which might have been entertaining if it didn’t ruin lives.
Maybe I lax on the news a little more these days but it’s like falling asleep in the car when you know there’s a decent driver.
