Mike Richards, the executive producer of Jeopardy, hired himself to replace the late Alex Trebek as Jeopardy host after a months-long search. He’s the Dick Cheney of Jeopardy, basically. He’ll share the job with Mayim Bialik. [Dlisted]

ugh. Did not like him. Probably will stop watching unless he improves

    • Pinellas Pixie says:

I didn’t like him and I cannot forget that he started off by lying to us. He said he was only filling in due to scheduling conflicts caused by the COVID, all the while he knew he was going to hire himself for the job. I’m tired of being lied to. That seems to be the new American past time and I don’t appreciate it. I think I’m done with Jeopardy and that makes me sad.

    • Still_Sarah says:

The man is like a bland sixties Ken doll. He looks like he belongs on the set of Mad Men. i will not watch. Why not have Mayim do all the shows?

    • BothSidesNow says:

I would boycott for the fact that he was investigated TWICE for sexual misconduct years ago, though no charges were filed but given that this was b4 #MeeToo movement, it could have turned out differently. Also, he is a dick Cheney kind of guy….

  2. Lola says:

I’m more irked by her hosting than him hosting, actually. I find her whole brand more cringey than anyone else. To me she is in the same over-sharing bucket as Tori Spelling, Jana Kramer and Dax Shepherd. To the point where I genuinely have secondhand embarrassment. It’s great to share and relate but I really don’t need to know THAT much about her attachment parenting, emotional turmoils, relationship struggles, and so on. Also, she is so unsufferably moralistic and preachy. I probably share a lot of the same views that she has, but the moralistic tone grates so so badly. She also seems to be doing the same “adorkable” thing as Zooey Deschanel and it equally makes me want to change the channel. She seems to be everywhere and I’ve had way more than enough of her at the moment…

    • tealily says:

And doesn’t she have an anti-vax tilt to her? I agree about being preachy. Not a fan.

      • North of Boston says:

She says she’s skeptical of big Pharma, and her position on vaccines has apparently evolved since the anti-vax quotes that have resurfaced from years ago.

She and her family have all gotten the COVID vax.

Apparently there are some Facebook posts going around that misrepresent where she stands, painting her as completely antivax.

(Note, the extent of my limited knowledge on this is from one quick read of a fact-check.org posting about her vaccine stance)

      • tealily says:

Ah, that’s good to know at least. I haven’t paid attention to anything she’s had to say in recent years. She rubbed me the wrong way sooo badly when her comments first came out. And I have big problems with anyone dictating how others should dress (despite being a pretty modest dresser myself). She strikes me as awfully self-righteous.

      • Lady D says:

She wants to be seen as a paragon of virtue, it just doesn’t feel or come across as sincere. jmo

    • Beth says:

She was *awful*! I can’t believe they hired her. She talked about herself and articulated/gestured like she was speaking down to children. The word smug came to mind so many times during her 2 weeks.

That’s not even touching on the fact that she had significant delays in her responses which slowed down gameplay and made it very clear she had no idea what the answers were. She is not a smart woman, as evidenced by her statements on vaccinations, women’s dress & sexual harassment.

      • Wiglet Watcher says:

She has often come off a bit smug imo because while she is academically intelligent she lacks charisma.
He is just a bore that o can’t figure out why I dislike him.

No one can fill Trebek’s shoes. It’s not something another host can replicate because He was the whole role. Just himself. And there isn’t another one like him.

I’m boycotting jeopardy. Very sad, but the show I enjoyed died with the host.

      • Becks1 says:

If she mentioned that she had a ph.D in neuroscience one more time……

    • paranormalgirl says:

Something about her rubs me completely wrong. I just don’t like her. I will probably not be watching Jeopardy anymore.

  3. Kelly says:

That’s a great photo of Mayim.

  4. Mireille says:

Mike Richards comes off stiff as a board. No warmth or sincere engagement with contestants, not like Alex. And, as much as I respect Mayim Bialik (PhD in Neuroscience), not thrilled about her either. I’d much prefer LeVar Burton as the host.

  5. You Know Me says:

The two losers they chose to host the show — been better if the show died when Alex did. I’m hoping the elderly folks stop watching & the show DIVES

  6. steph says:

This was probably his plan all along.
I had my fingers crossed for Levar Burton. He’s the only one I liked.

    • North of Boston says:

Since he lied about the REAL reason he “stepped in” to guest host, it seems like it was his plan after all.

I’m sure there are some people who will continue watching on autopilot, but I’m not one of them. He’s absolutely not an interesting host and the way he went about inserting himself into this process and trying to cover it up leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. Why go through the sham tryouts?
(Yeah, I know why – ratings and money, but it would be like if American Idol when through their first round and then decided dump all the contestants and have the judges complete for the rest of the season. If all the judges were bland, uncharismatic and could only sing OK.

      • Becks1 says:

That’s what gets me. No, not everyone guest hosting was actually trying out for the job. I feel like Savannah Guthrie is pretty happy where she is (although maybe she did really want it lol.) But some did think it was an actual try out, and the fans certainly thought so. So why go through all that with the guest hosts if he was just going to be the host all along? take a two month break after Trebek passed, and then just start up again with Richards. The sham process feels insulting.

      • Jais says:

That’s how I feel too Becks1. The sham feels maddening. Richards comes across as smarmy. Maybe he’s not but this sham process does not help him seem any less smarmy. It’s a huge let down and feels like a betrayal to the audience.

  7. Tiffany says:

Mark Harris brought up a good point on the Twitter.

The show should not have interacted with social media on who the next host should be ( everyone and I mean everyone was on the LaVar Burton train and I made sure I lived watched his week) when their decision was already made and they deserve the smoke they are getting.

It is definitely gonna be interesting to see how this turns out ratings wise. And Richards is toxic from his work on Price is Right and the internet is forever.

    • DeeSea says:

100% this. Mayim Bialik is extremely problematic as well. I deleted my years-long DVR series recording for Jeopardy yesterday. I’m grateful for all of the good years with Alex Trebek at the helm, and now I’m done watching/supporting. I was rooting for Ken Jennings, LeVar Burton, or (long shot because she has other commitments) my fav Robin Roberts. What a let-down.

  8. Case says:

Casting the producer is so duplicitous and tone deaf. No thanks, won’t be watching.

  9. Northerngirl says:

This Lil Nas X clip is AWESOME!!!

    • MoonTheLoon says:

Agreed. The art direction was on point! He seems to have a good instinct for it and makes sure to surround himself with equally talented individuals that help carry his visions forward. Watching his career is gonna be a long and enjoyable ride. I’m here for it!

    • DeeSea says:

I so agree! I can’t get enough of it! He’s amazing, and I’m here for anything and everything that he chooses to bless the world with.

    • Golly Gee says:

I love his sense of humor too.

  10. lelbit says:

I thought Mike Richards was great and I loved Mayim and some are irritated that she keeps pushing phd/neuro accomplishments but I see it as a way to encourage young girls/women in a role/degree where it needs encouragement. I wish they would have picked a female for once but it’s the big wigs who decide -that’s the ways the world goes, no matter what, where. they wanted people who would last 20 years and Levar wouldn’t. I really don’t think he did well and rather have had Buzz. No one is going to be Alex so we need to get over that and move on. I have not watched the show the last few weeks and really dont have any interest anymore.

    • Aphra says:

To all the young girls out there watching, you too can be #2 to a mediocre white male! Aim high(ish)! Be Best! *eye roll*

      • North of Boston says:

A mediocre white male who looked around, saw a bunch of candidates with experience in the public eye, on camera, as participants on this show, several of who had captivated the public’s imagination, then paused, looked in the mirror and said:

“nah… I my not have any on camera or public speaking experience, but obviously I’M the best person for this job”

  11. MoonTheLoon says:

Well, they got the ratings they were after, with this “guest host” audition caper. Mayim was allright. I liked Levar, but think he fell a little short considering the aggressive campaign he mounted for the role. Ken Jennings would have been good, but he’s got other gigs. He seemed happy to fill in, but it’s clear he’s moved on. I’m gonna just wave goodbye to the show now. Jeopardy WAS Alex Trebek. It’s time for the executives to come up with their own competitive version. Exercise that originality so many of them seem to be missing lately.

  12. Robyn says:

Thank you for the James McAvoy palate cleanser! Yum!

  13. Pix says:

I am so disappointed and can’t state it enough. This guy is a terrible choice — the worst.
I really think there will be a lost generation of Jeopardy viewers because they were so short sighted on this pick. Unfortunately old people will continue to watch along with Wheel of Fortune as long as Pat Sajak and Vanna White are around.

  14. Merricat says:

Jeopardy is the only trivia knowledge-based game show I know. People who stop watching it are probably not into it anyway. I remember when my granny was sad because Trebek took over for Art Fleming. If the new hosts don’t work, they’ll trade them for others.

    • North of Boston says:

Or maybe they are “into it” and don’t think this guy is a good choice and aren’t really “into” supporting projects run by liars.

    • DeeSea says:

Watching Jeopardy has been a regular part of my life for years, and I was looking forward to them picking a worthy and interesting new host. They picked the worst possible new host(s), IMO, and I am choosing to not watch anymore. And I was very “into it.”

    • Merricat says:

Lol. I’ve watched the show my whole life. The host is not as important or as interesting to me as the game itself. But everyone has different priorities.

  15. Keats says:

I thought Dick Cheneying is when you shoot your friend in the face

    • Merricat says:

      Good point.

    • Zut Alors says:

Apparently there are different levels of a$$holery that can apply to Dick Cheneying.

      • North of Boston says:

And that’s before you even get anywhere near the “conspired to launch a deadly war based on blatant lies, manipulation, with a ginormous side of military industrial war profiteering”

      • Golly Gee says:

        North of Boston
        +1

    • Anne Call says:

Cheney famously was in charge of Bush’s Vice President search and then at the end suggested himself for the VP slot. That’s what they’re referring to.

      • Keats says:

Oh yes i know 🙂 but every day is a good day to remind people that dick cheney is the kinda guy who shoots his friends in the face

    • original_kellybean says:

That is the only reason I clicked on this post. I don’t watch Jeopardy but was so interested to read about this guy shooting a friend. So much disappointment on my part.

  16. J ferber says:

So all the guest hosting was a sham– boy hand-picked himself for the job from the get-go. Slimy. Lever Burton is a perfect pick for the job, but selfish, duplicitous douche bro snatches it for himself. So very Trumpian. So very disappointing. Don’t play the game straight and win. Sucks.

  17. mellie says:

Obviously many of the guests hosts weren’t going to be permanent hosts (i.e. Aaron Rodgers, Savannah Guthrie…), I thought Mayim did a really good job, but I really thought Ken Jennings did the best job of all the hosts. He epitomizes trivia games and I think he should have been strongly considered. I don’t think this is a good fit for Levar Burton, I watched a couple episodes with him at the helm and I wasn’t taken by him. I like him, but at the end of the day, I think Ken Jennings should have gotten the job, not the this Mike guy…talk about nepotism. Thank God Dr. Oz wasn’t in the conversation though…..

    • equality says:

I think Ken said he didn’t want to take it. He has a job behind the scenes at Jeopardy and an on-screen job on the Chase.

    • AnnaC says:

A lot of the Levar commentary I’ve read has noted they wish had had 2 weeks to guest host as all of the others did because 2 while he wasn’t great the first few days he seemed to greatly improve by the end and thought he would have been fantastic by week 2.

I liked Mayim Bialik as host and in general like her.

    • Jennifer Romans says:

I agree that Ken Jennings was the best of all the guest hosts, he just seems like a natural fit.
I really don’t understand why the producers pretended that the viewers had any input.

    • Becks1 says:

My husband is still watching this week (I’ve stopped bc I find that Matt guy so annoying lol) and he says that Joe Buck is actually his favorite guest host out of all of them. We weren’t the biggest Burton fans but I think if he had the full two weeks he would have been a lot better. It seems unfair to compare someone who had a week with guest hosts who had the full two weeks.

  18. The Recluse says:

Keith Olbermann had nothing good to say about this guy on Twitter. So now I’m waiting to see if his past conduct will blow up and end his little power grab.

  19. myjobistoprincess says:

Clown trend might have been inspired by Kate middleton. Not sure if because of the behavior (she has an extra grin for smile on command even when things arent doing well), or becuase she loves clown ruffles (she had a fuschia polka dot dress with exactly that.)

  20. Krug Stillo says:

Cheney comparison is a good one. Hadn’t occurred to me. When I heard of Richards’ slimy move I thought he was like Kevin Spacey in HORRIBLE BOSSES. His character runs his employee ragged by dangling the possibility of a promotion and raise, only to take the job and extra money himself.
That said, I am so glad they didn’t go with Anderson Cooper. He was terrible and imbecilic. Imbeciles don’t belong on Jeopardy!
