Saturday Night Live won Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, which had only one other nominee, A Black Lady Sketch Show. A lot of people were hoping this was Robin Thede’s year, her show was nominated last year as well, but the Emmy went to SNL for the umpteenth time. I looked it up and SNL has 76 Emmys and 306 nominations, the most of any show. I know we needed SNL during this insane year but give an hilarious show a chance! Here’s that video queued up to Thede’s reaction. She was faux fuming and Issa had to comfort her!
Robin was in a sea foam green Jason Wu embroidered gown with a ribbon belt. I love the bottom half of this gown but the ruffles at the necklace are a little frou frou for me. Her hair and makeup look amazing.
Issa Rae glowed in a metallic net Aliette gown. She looks gorgeous but I wish this wasn’t see through.
Presenter Taraji P. Henson slayed in a gorgeous black and white Elie Saab sequin gown with a deep v-neck. The gown is sheer and has pockets!

Agree on the tulle or whatever that is at the neck of Robin’s dress. However, the color is amazing on her, and her eyes!!! OMG GORGEOUS.
Issa’s look would be perfection (to me!) if it wasn’t see through. Styling was amazing, and she looked beautiful.
Taraji got it right: neck slit OR thigh slit…not both in one dress. I like that she let the fabric “do the talking” and didn’t do statement earrings/necklace. She looked sultry, sexy, and comfortable. And ALWAYS YES to pockets! 😊

It reminds me of when Bily Eichner was nominated for Billy on the Street (once it made it to TV) against SNL, and he went on a late show and said something like “Oh, SNL doesn’t need to win again. We all know its great. Its like giving an award to Pizza! ‘Oh yay pizza!’ Everyone already knows and likes pizza, its great, WE GET IT”.
Agreed. At this point SNL winning is just lazy voters.
I haven’t missed an episode of either SNL or A Black Lady Sketch Show — my existence has been very TV-oriented for the past year and a half — and SNL’s win is baffling. I guess voters just vote for the show they’ve heard of.

Good lord Robin Thede looks amazing. The color! The cut! I’m also a fan of the frou-frou chiffon explosion, since it lends a really nice softness and balance to the angles of her face and the straight vertical lines of the dress and hair. And I like that it reaches all the way to her throat, like a mermaid’s cravat. Since the bodice is doing the work of a bib necklace I don’t think the dress really needed any additional jewelry, but I do love how all the jewelry matches the sash *perfectly*. The Emmys are a comedy writer’s Oscars, so I love this.
+1! I love Robin’s look, for all the reasons you mentioned. I also love that the bottom half is a shade darker to really set off against the rest of the dress. She looks so beautiful.
What’s the point of the Emmys nominating any others show when they’re just going to give it to SNL .
