Princess Beatrice named her daughter Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi

Official Wedding Photograph of Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi

Princess Beatrice welcomed her daughter on September 18th, a Saturday. Buckingham Palace sat on the news for 48 hours and then announced the news on Monday. I thought it was nice that Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi got time with the baby and got to leave the hospital before anything was announced, especially since there seemed to be much different “protocols” applied to Meghan and Harry in 2019. Beatrice and Edo kept the name under wraps for nearly two full weeks. The theory was that they would announce the name after Prince Andrew returned to London/Windsor and met his first granddaughter. Sure enough, that’s what happened. Beatrice announced the name with this tweet:

Wolfie is Edo’s son from his previous relationship with Dara Huang. Beatrice has put a lot of emphasis into being Wolfie’s stepmother, and I like that she included him in the baby name announcement. As for the name… I like it? Sienna is a pretty name. I don’t think it was at the top of anyone’s guess list, but it makes sense. It has an Italian origin – it’s the name of an Italian city – and Edo is Italian nobility. But it’s also a very popular girl’s name in the UK and other English-speaking countries. “Sienna” doesn’t have a royal history but it’s not far off the beaten path either. I’m just glad Beatrice and Edo didn’t go with a name popular in the Victorian era. As for the middle name… so many royal women use “Elizabeth” as their girls’ middle name. I was expecting it. We should all expect it at this point.

I like sienna. Its a pretty name. But every time a royal birth is announced the hypocrisy towards harry and meghan just doesn’t escape me

The press was furious that archies birth was announced a few hours after he was born instead of immediately. They have been salivating over pictures of lili. People were upset at archies name, then at lili’s. Beatrice’s and Eugenie’s birth announcements were greeted with nothing but joy. But harry and meghans received contempt

    • Amy Bee says:

@Pao: I think we know the real reason for the contempt for Archie and Lili.

    • Eurydice says:

Page Six couldn’t resist getting bitchy in their article, comparing “Elizabeth” to “Lilibet” and quoting tweets about how “Elizabeth” is the proper way to honor the Queen, not her personal nickname.

      • Merricat says:

Page 6 is for conservatives, for sure. Stupid ones, I guess, since it’s already been stated that Harry & Meghan named Lili after Harry’s grandmother, not the queen.

    • SuSuSusio says:

In many cultures, the first letter of a newborn’s name is done to honor a relative whose name begins with the same letter.

It has been said that “Sienna” is at once a tribute to Edo’s culture, a nod to Beatrice’s hair color (which the baby seems to have inherited) and also a tribute to her mother, Sarah.

The media would’ve gone insane if they’d named the child, “Sarah.”

As for the hypocrisy re: H&M? It screams so loud it will wake the babies.

  2. Becks1 says:

I like it. It’s a little quirky but not too out there and fits with the other non-royal baby names (Savannah, Isla, etc). I find it interesting they only gave her two names, I did expect Beatrice to lean in hard to the royal tradition of 3 or 4 names. Maybe bc Wolfie only has two and the last name is already two names? Or maybe that’s all she wanted to do all along.

    • Jan90067 says:

Totally abstract thought about the 4 names (or more, like Lili’s): I really feel for these little ones, as they learn to write their names prior to going to school lol. Remember how large 3, 4, & 5 yr olds write? Their names will take up a full page or two! Can you just see the little heads bent over the paper, tongue tips at the corner of their mouths, earnestly printing it out as their parents coach them😊 Makes me smile imaging this.

Also, as a teacher who had to help kids fill in their names in the little boxes on multiple choice computerized test sheets…their hyphenated names will *never* fit 😊 😱 😄

      • Becks1 says:

@Jan – I know! I think about that too randomly lol. Can you imagine having to “bubble in” Mountbatten-Windsor 😂

      • sparky says:

Yeah… One of my best friends in school was George’s sister, Anastasia Stephanopoulos. It was a running joke with us around college app/SAT time that there were never enough spaces provided.

      • Julia says:

Where I’m from (France) we also have several middle names traditionally (my sister has 4 in total, and I luckily only got 3!), however we barely ever used these, and definitely not at school – you would only be known by your first name and last name. Now the double barrel or very long last name must still be a drag when learning to write, I agree!

I’ve also been suffering living in London, as middle names are a big thing here, and all of mine defo don’t fit on any documents – my credit card ended up being only initials because they can’t get it all in there, which is so dumb!

      • Billie says:

I have two middle names– it’s has never been a hardship *eyeroll*

      • HarleyB says:

‘Tongue tips at the corners of their mouths’

Your description was so vivid!…and so sweet.

      • Merricat says:

Lol, our daughter has four names, no hyphens. She mostly uses just the very first and the very last.

      • Becks1 says:

@Billie and Merricat – its not the middle names that concern me for the bubbling, its the last names! Mountbatten-Windsor and Mappelli Mozzi are both pretty long LOL.

George probably just gets to bubble KING and that’s it lol.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ Becks1, I agree! It’s a lovely name and given that it’s directly a reference to Edo’s home country, it sounds good with Elizabeth. When is someone going to NOT give their female child Elizabeth as an additional name? I would imagine it’s tiring to ‘Ol Betty the Battle Axe!!!

    • sassafras says:

And Zara! In the early 80’s was quite different. And Zara was the first granddaughter of the queen! Shocking.

What I want to know is, did Anne or Beatrice or Peter or William get “permission” to honor their mother/grandmother with her name like apparently Harry had to?

  3. Amy Bee says:

No bad response from the Palace and press about the use of the name Elizabeth. I’m convinced the aggressive reaction from the Palace was because they weren’t allowed to make the announcement of the birth of Harry and Meghan’s daughter. Not to mention the fact another mixed race child was brought into the family. Anyway, all the best to Beatrice and her family. Compared to her sister she extremely private. It begs the question whether it was really Eugenie who wanted to be a working royal and not Beatrice.

    • Pao says:

The aggressive response of the palace about lili was because they had absolutely no idea about the birth plan, her name nor her birth. They caught of guard by the announcement and were annoyed they had nothing about baby lili they could leak to the press.

      • Seraphina says:

+1. Extra aggressive that H&M aren’t letting them in on anything. How dare they, do they know who we are????? Yeah, and that’s why they left.

      • Ginger says:

Also, the Queen knew about the birth ( she did Zoom with Lilli before they announced the birth) and she didn’t tell her courtiers. Her couriers were probably upset the Queen didn’t tell them and her relationship with Harry.

    • VS says:

They are all following into the footsteps of H&M. H&M are true leaders, they get all the negative reactions, all the racism, yet the others do not hesitate to follow up

The fact that there are people waiting to see the children of others is so weird to me……W can show his kids if he wants, the others aren’t obligated to do so anymore, especially after H&M set the precedent.

Sienna is a beautiful name and here cries about the “no pictures”……hopefully no one ever sees LiliDi ever until she turns 20 or so

    • Lucy2 says:

I still have to laugh at that comment when the Lilibet name was released, that they had “taken everything from the queen, her nickname was all she had left!”
The lady’s the freaking queen of England.

  4. Amelie says:

I love her name. So pretty. But it wasn’t lost on me the absolute hypocrisy of the ROTA and Royals. But at this point it’s to be expected.

  5. The Duchess says:

Nice name, but I’m surprised we didn’t see any media rats demanding that the name should be revealed instantly. Two weeks to reveal a name, when Meghan couldn’t even breathe for 48 hours really sums this pathetic establishment up perfectly.

  6. Seraphina says:

I was expecting something a bit more arsito. Googled meaning of the name and came up with: The name Sienna can either mean “a reddish-orange color” or an alternate meaning is “delicate”. Interesting. And very customary to name the children after the reigning monarch. Especially when girls are born and there is a queen on the throne.

    • Red Weather Tiger says:

The name is beautiful, but whenever I hear it, I think back to the Crayola crayon color “burnt sienna,” and it ruins it just a tiny bit.

      • Anners says:

Hahahaha! SAME! My other association is actor Sienna Miller and I never really warmed to her, so secretly I felt she deserved that ugly crayon name.

To be clear – especially to all the Siennas out there – it’s a lovely name, I just have unfortunate associations with it.

      • Soapboxpudding says:

Burnt Siena comes from the town of Siena in Italy due to the colour of the buildings and soils around there. It’s a lovely, medieval walled city and I highly recommend visiting it.

      • Lionel says:

Haha yes! Siena is a breathtakingly gorgeous town in Tuscany. “Burnt Sienna” is universally known as the worst color in the Crayon box. If they were going for the Italian reference they could have at least spelled it right.

(PS — to any Siennas out there, it’s a beautiful name in any spelling!)

      • Amanda says:

Yes!!! There’s a Seinfeld episode where Jerry tells Elaine that George’s new girlfriend’s name is Sienna…
        Elaine: Sienna?!!!
        Jerry: Yeah, like the crayon….

      • Smalltown Girl says:

Burnt Sienna was my favorite crayon to use for hair when I was little so I have warm associations.

      • Ann says:

I remember being partial to “Burnt Sienna” and also to “Burnt Umber.”

    • Jan90067 says:

Sienna is a lovely, almost medieval town. It has a charming town square. I did a day trip when I was on a cooking trip in Tuscany. With Edo’s Italian roots, it’s a nice nod to his heritage.

TBH, it almost feels like such a suck-up move when all these grandkids are named after Ol’ Brenda as their middle names. While I know/understand the precedent of doing so, it just feels so *kiss up* to me. One or two kids? But almost EVERY one? What, is TQ going to cut the out of the will if her name isn’t in there? 😄

      • clarabelle says:

My best friend’s daughter also went to Sienna on a cooking tour, and a few years later named her first child same name. I think it’s lovely. (I’d ALSO love to go on that tour!)

    • Seraphina says:

Thank you everyone. Love learning more from all of you!

  7. Over it says:

Did she get permission to name the child Elizabeth,or did she just tell the queen after the fact that the child name is Elizabeth? Curious minds want to know.

  8. Nyro says:

I love the name Sienna. So pretty. And I love that we have yet another royal mommy who didn’t do the Lindo Wing photo op and who has not handed over a picture of her baby. I love that they’re taking their cues from Madame Duchess. Ha!

  9. Gk says:

In the next decade or so the palace will change its mind and try to use the mixed race royals to seem modern and diverse because it’s already weird this very old fashioned appearing yet incredibly privileged ( Botox, designer clothing, private schools, laws changed to benefit them, private planes, multiple estates/ homes) still exists in a world that increasingly calls out and cancels many things.

  10. TheOriginalMia says:

Didn’t realize they had a double last name. I like Sienna.

  11. Barbie1 says:

Love the name Sienna Elizabeth. Every royal baby girl should have Elizabeth in her name. It’s a loving tribute.

  12. Sofia says:

Yeah Elizabeth was definitely a given. And Sienna is a pretty name. I quite like it!

  13. MsIam says:

Pretty name, I like it better than August or whatever Eugenie and her husband named their son. Lucky for Beatrice, she and her husband will get to enjoy their new baby days in peace, without the world judging every little thing, unlike another royal couple we know.

  14. Jegede says:

    What no pictures released??😲

How dare they?😮 They owe the public!😮

    ‘Titles’, ‘Taxpayers’, blah,blah,blah!🙄

  15. Jais says:

More and more, I like the choice of Lilibet(setting aside my dislike of the monarchy and the queen’s role in it). Mostly because all the cousins share the same name of Elizabeth in order to show tribute whereas Lili has a name that is unique from her cousins but still pays tribute. The BM were honestly just pissed at Harry and Meghan’s creativity and innovation in naming their child.
I really like sienna too. Would have been cool to get Isabella or Elizabetta as the middle name rather than Elizabeth but it’s pretty either way.

  16. ennie says:

If H and M had named her first /only daughter something else, the press would have bewn “ but, but they snubbed the kweeeeeen!

  17. Lunasf17 says:

That’s a cute name. And I think it’s great they made such an effort to include Wolfie.

  18. Betsy says:

That’s a ghastly name. I don’t like on regular people, I don’t like it on celebs, I just don’t like it.

    • Jaded says:

A ghastly name? At least they didn’t name her Prudence or Ursula or Agatha…(apologies to anyone reading this with these names). Having been to Sienna, which is a gorgeous city, I think it’s a lovely name.

      • Betsy says:

I actually prefer Prudence and Agatha. Poor Ursula suffers from the whole sea witch connotation.

    • Lorelei says:

Ghastly?? I think Sienna is very pretty and it automatically make me think of Beatrice’s and Sarah’s hair color.

It just shows how subjective these things are; I think Prudence and Agatha are awful! I also didn’t mind August. It’s refreshing that they’re not all sticking to the Arthur/George/Elizabeth type names (as first names) that the royals have used over and over again.

  19. Coco says:

I was thinking they might use Elisabetta instead of Elizabeth.

  20. Lucy2 says:

    I like the name.

  21. Jack says:

Sienna is a Toyota model. The Italian city name is spelled with one “n”.

  22. Abby says:

I think Sienna kind of honors Fergie and all of their red hair-ish-ness.

  23. DeltaJuliet says:

I guess I’m one of the very few who doesn’t love the name? I don’t have really strong feelings about it (of the family for that matter) but I expected something…more royal sounding.

  24. jferber says:

Coco, that would have been cute.
