NY Post alleges Letterman was carrying on affair last year

The timeline in the whole David Letterman extortion/affair/scandal has been rather fuzzy regarding when he was cheating with staffer Stephanie Birkitt. Dave was married to his longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko last March. One of the big questions was whether or not he was seeing Birkitt when he was married, which is still unclear. But he was definitely seeing her within several months of his marriage. Last fall he and Birkitt spent time vacationing at his Montana ranch – the same place he married Lasko in March. Tacky for sure. The NY Post (via PopEater) has a bunch of other interesting details as well.

Not long after David Letterman made a public apology during Monday’s episode, more scandalous details about his affair with ‘Late Show’ staffer Stephanie Birkitt started to surface — including diary excerpts about their sexual relations.

Birkitt’s diary revealed that she and Letterman enjoyed romantic hikes last fall at his sprawling ranch in eastern Montana — where he was married in March — while her boyfriend Robert “Joe” Halderman stayed home in Connecticut, sources told The NY Post. While she tried to keep it a secret, Halderman eventually found Birkitt’s diary in December and learned she was still carrying on a steamy affair with Letterman.

At the time, Birkitt, 34, insisted to Halderman that she and the 62-year-old Letterman had just “a platonic relationship,” a source said. “I’m his best friend,” Birkitt allegedly told her worried beau. Letterman would also drive Birkitt home to Norwalk, Conn., where she had been sharing a house with Halderman since he divorced his wife in 2004, sources said. The comedian lived with his longtime girlfriend and their son in Westchester.

Even after Birkitt graduated in June 2008, Letterman offered her a job as his personal lawyer. According to sources, Birkitt used the offer to persuade Halderman to have children with her, saying she would bring in the bucks with her new job and he could stay home. He and Birkitt had stayed together until last month, when they split up and his financial and emotional turmoil hit a breaking point.

[From PopEater]

Who are these sources? I understand that a lot of tabloids don’t print their names, but at least give us something to back up that they’re reliable. It all sounds legit to me, but more than anything I’m curious about who would have such detailed information about something that was a secret. It sounds like it’s coming from someone who has access to Birkitt’s diaries. I’d think if she told any friends about the affair, it might have come out already.

It makes me wonder if the leaks are coming from the D.A.’s office, or if perhaps someone in Robert “Joe” Halderman’s camp is spreading the information to make Letterman look bad. And to be fair, he already looks bad, though I believe he’s handled this whole thing as gracefully as possible. But he doesn’t look like a beacon of morality or anything. But since he’s the victim of an extortion attempt, people are obviously on his side versus Halderman’s. I imagine that Halderman and his bumbling lawyer, Gerald Shargel, could be getting desperate for some public sympathy.

Obviously none of this makes Dave look good. It’s awful of him to get married in the spring at the same place he had an affair in the fall. How could he go there and not be reminded of Birkitt? That’s what bothers me the most. It’s safe to say more sordid details will come out, but I think that as long as Dave continues to handle it well and move on, he’ll probably escape relatively unscathed. But I can’t imagine how his marriage could last.

  1. Victoria says:

Regina put the time in and got the late-age baby and finally the marriage. She doesn’t care who gives him oral sex after 20 years.

  2. bros says:

it would be so ironic if, after 23 years of dating, and finally getting married, dave’s wife decides to divorce him-she would probably get a pretty penny, whereas before, she would have been left with zip. it will be interesting to see what she does as this case unfolds…..dave might have blown it.

  3. Cadiebelle says:

This is Dave’s private business – who he boinks.

  4. Sumodo says:

Looks like Regina is in the “catbird seat.” If she divorces him, she could wind up with the kind of dough never seen before in a celebrity divorce!

  5. Catherine says:

Who really cares. He apologized publicly to his wife saying he knows full well that he has a long hard road in front of him. Why dig up more dirt?

  6. cmolha says:

I’m enjoying seeing him being the butt of the joke for a while.

  7. hatsumomo says:

I dunno, he already publicly apologized to her and even stated about making it work with her. If anything Regina got THE DEAL!!!!! She can pretty much ask for whatever she wants and get it, something the rest of us dont have access to. I think when dave stated he is committed to making it up, I think he honestly wants to stay married. That woman is going to get EVERYTHING!!!

  8. minx says:

Love to hear Dave’s apologists on this site. Just because they like Dave, they’re willing to say “who cares”.. their high morals suddenly don’t matter so much ;)). Also love how Chris Rock defends Dave saying he’s “the greatest host”.. (check People’s website) LOL.. because, as we know, his skills as a TV personality have lots to do with it. ;).

  9. Iggles says:

I knew there was more to this story. This is gross and an abuse of power. He offered his mistress a high paying job – hello? Where is the fairness in that work place. Interoffice romance between the boss and subordinates are always sketchy and have real consequences for the rest of the people who aren’t doing quid pro quo…

  10. Lantana says:

The best way for Letterman to put an end to the endless speculation would be for his wife to make a statement saying she didn’t know it was going on, but isn’t surprised, and they’ve been through too much for too long not to stay together now, so say whatever you want. It would totally neutralize the gossip. Then she could wait a couple months and divorce his ass and say that even through public humiliation, she remained supportive but the differences are proving irreconcilable. Cha-ching!

  11. What evs says:

The only time I agreed with Palin was when she knocked Letterman after he made that inappropriate remark about her young daughter. She was absolutely right. No respect or compassion for Letterman at all, even if he was being extorted. The guy is a perv old man narcissist and I’ve never really watched his show anyway. I feel bad for people that actually liked him. What a dissapointing character.

  12. Diane says:

Dave works for his own company, CBS denies any legal culpability for his actions.

I still maintain Dave has an open relationship with his wife and we haven’t heard the last of his behavior.

The price of Halderman’s book is going up = )

  13. Lindsay says:

I wonder if she knew. Working on his staff, going out of the way to take Birkitt home, going on vacations without her. Maybe your right Victoria, she was just able to let it go. Sumodo, he might have a pre-nup that limits how much she gets. Plus, I bet if the divorce happens it will be settled privately. Both of them have handled this without letting the drama play out in the media, Like the whole Le Anne mess.

  14. Ally says:

Maybe that “I wish I was hiking the Appalachian trail.” joke last night was ill-considered, after all.

  15. TaylorB says:

I am no ‘Dave apologist’ but I don’t think that him cheating on his then GF is anyones business but theirs. It wasn’t illegal (like blackmail), he didn’t go hire a hooker, and it doesn’t seem like any of the women felt that their job was in jeopardy if they didn’t bump uglies with him. So basically he was a slimy, cheating BF, I have dated a few of those in my time, they suck and I assume his wife will either sort it out or throw him out. Personally, I would toss him to the curb, but I am not Regina and I don’t know how they roll as a couple.

  16. Popcorny says:

So I guess all of us who enjoy Dave’s humor and personality are being asked to burn him at the stake now? -that if we continue to watch him it’s akin to condoning what he did?
I’ve seen no real apologists for Dave’s behavior, nor need there be any -he’s doing it himself.
I mean, c’mon, now that it’s “outta the bag” it’s not like he’s lying about it and stomping around the globe “saving the orphans” trying to cover his dirty deeds and save his reputation.
I don’t like what Dave did … but, dammit, I LIKE DAVE.
    ;^)

  17. bros says:

yah i could give a crap about the morality of this. its 2009. are were really not going to watch dave because he was cheating? is anyone really apologizing for him? there is nothing anyone would need to apologize for except him to his wife. he didnt do anything to us. and please, to the person going on and on about abuse of power, boss subordinate thing-really? this is seriously the worst thing you have heard about in terms of sex and show biz? please.

  18. princess pea says:

I just can’t work up the ire, sorry. So consenting adults had sexual relations. If the women felt pressured to sleep with him because of his job, we’d have heard. Either they’d be speaking up now, or more likely, they’d have pressed charges for sexual harassment when it happened.

What happens between Dave and Regina now is between them. Dave is not a politician or a religious leader… I don’t hold him to a higher moral standard than any other human. He made mistakes, he publicly declared it, and I’m supposed to be more angry at him than the dude who was BREAKING THE LAW with extortion demands?

  19. RobN says:

Dave’s only public problem as I see it, as opposed to his private relationship with his wife, is that he’s really limited his ability to make fun of others. How would the 5000 Elliot Spitzer jokes sound now? Or the Carolina governor jokes? What used to be funny will now be slightly creepy with a tinge of “hey buddy, who are you to talk”.

  20. TwinkleToes says:

Find it odd that anyone really cares about an unattractive man in his 60’s. The whole lot of people embroiled in this scandal is neither glamorous or attractive. Just can’t get worked up about this one.

  21. CandyKay says:

The guy made his living being cruel to other people. Now the shoe is on the other foot.

  22. DD says:

I bet you most celebrities conduct affairs behind closed doors. They’re sleazy, they have power, they’re surrounded by other beautiful, vapid people who are power or fame hungry. Nothing shocking, what would be shocking are celebrities who are completely faithful.

  23. Iggles says:

CanyKay, that sounds harsh.. but it’s pretty much sums it up!

  24. TaylorB says:

    CandyKay,

He made a living as a comic, and as with most comics they poke fun at topical issues and people in a humorous way, while sometimes it does cross the line it isn’t generally intended to be cruel.

  25. jane says:

This alleged extortionist Halderman is SO much worst than Letterman. He stole his girlfriend diary. He read her private thoughts page by page. He made photocopies of her diary and now it seems he’s made her life available for the public to view. Cheating and sex are one thing. Complete violation and the selling a significant other’s soul is a whole other demon.

  26. Penny says:

Honestly, I would not be surprised if Dave’s wife knew. I am sorry, but after 20 years of dating she knew what she was getting. She worked there and I am sure heard the chatter and saw the chemistry with the mistress. I doubt she’s an idiot and I am certain she made her choices when they got married.

Also, she’s not going to get everything – why wouldn’t Dave have a pre-nup?

  27. princess pea says:

Oh c’mon. He hasn’t made a career out of cruelty. He’s not Perez Hilton.

  28. LolaBella says:

Oh Dave, remember all of those Bill Clinton jokes you made back in the day??? Karma, buddy…karma.

I feel sorry for his wife, she is the one who probably feels embarrassed and humiliated, but I think she knew about his past dalliances while they’ve been together. The two of them probably came to some sort of an understanding/agreement that he would end the affairs and that’s when they decided to get married.

What will make this whole situation worse is if someone contacts TMZ with proof that he is currently having an affair.

  29. Lindsay says:

Maybe that is why he married her after twenty years, guilt and trying to keep her from leaving – especially if the affais ended after they were married.

  30. jules says:

The difference between Letterman and President Clinton, Sanford or Spitzer is DAVE WAS A SINGLE, UNMARRIED MAN. You morally high-minded people need to come off your pedestal and go into any office in America where this behavior is rampant. Dave is just one of the 99% of single men working in an office who have slept with a co-worker. Whether you like him or not, Dave IS the victim here.

  31. Steve says:

Regina isn’t going to get squat if she divorces Dave unless he wants to give it to her out of guilt. Anyone who thinks otherwise is uneducated on divorce laws and pre-nuptial contracts. In a “no-fault” state, cheating while married does not mean the cheater pays more to their spouse. And, since Dave was not married during these other relationships, it would zero impact on a divorce.

  32. For Sooth? says:

It’s not the sex, it’s the perks these women may have received while boinking the boss, versus Joyce schmoe who didn’t make it up to Dave’s single pad above the theater. Ahem, abuse of power anyone??!!

  33. Minx2 says:

Dave was an unmarried man.. but he was not single and had a child with a woman he lived with for many, many years, which was known to everyone. Does a marriage license make much difference in this case?
I for once DON’T CARE AT ALL about what he did. It’s an issue between him, Regina and maybe his employees, if he abused power.
I just find it interesting how people who usually speak from such high moral ground (when it comes to Brangelina for ex or Clinton) bend their rules for someone they actually happen to like. Suddenly there is nothing black and white anymore. ;)))

  34. justathought says:

the higher the monkey climbs the more he shows his tail….

  35. Popcorny says:

Minx2, perhaps the difference isn’t so much in WHO we like but in the WHY.
You cited Clinton, Jolie and Pitt as your example(s) of of the “hypocrisy” you claim to see.

The problem with your examples is that the ones/people you cited LIED to the public when they were caught.
    That makes a HUGE difference.

Dave stood up to what he did, with great humility … he did not lie, he did not downplay it, he did not try to “cover his ass/rep” (other than pre-empting the info) and did not try to hoodwink/fool the public.

Can Brangelina and Clinton say the same? -absolutely not. They lied desperately, playing the public for idiots to what was true and obvious.
They added immensely to their own deserved negative backlash.

  36. justme says:

I do not feel sorry for him at all. I really do not even think he feels sorry about it. If he did, he would have come clean a long time ago. He is just sorry that he got caught!

  37. Gigohead says:

I read the NY Post article and it looks like Dave and this girl were getting it on while Dave was married and she was shacked up with this guy. Vengeance has no fury like a man scorned! So this guy came after Dave. I don’t feel one bit ounce for Dave. He should not be messing with someone else’s piece when he has his at home. So Dave got what he got coming. LOL! Halderman was dumb, he should have just sold the story and the diary to the tabloids and had someone broker it for him. He would have kept the money and his freedom too.
