Angelina Jolie might sign on for another gun-toting badass role

wanted_angelina_jolie

Angelina Jolie the Actress generally has two modes – either she’s doing straight drama with some kind of yelling, crying, insanity and/or seduction, or she’s doing some kind of ass-kicking, gun-toting badass action film, usually with some kind of seduction. She’s no Cate Blanchett, but I think Angelina’s a better actress than most of the so-called A-List talent, and I’ve always liked her performances. So I’ve seen most of her films, regardless of the genre – and I have to say, I prefer her when she’s carrying a gun, jumping around, blasting away bad guys and being a badass. She’s one of the most naturally physical actors (male and female) in films today, and I wish she would do more action films instead of searching out that ever-elusive second Oscar. So this latest would-be casting news has me happy – Angelina is considering taking over an action role that Charlize Theron dropped out of. The film is called The Tourist, and it’s in development for a 2011 release.

Charlize Theron has opted out of the Spyglass-produced thriller “The Tourist,” to which she has long been attached, and in talks to replace her is one Angelina Jolie, sources say.

The tomb-raiding one, fresh off an action-heavy part in “Salt,” would take on the one-part seductress, one-part action role of the title.

The project is now also seeking a director, as Bharat Nalluri, the “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” helmer who had been attached to direct, is as of last week off the project, with producers now seeking a new helmer to pair with Jolie. Neither Spyglass nor the director or actresses’ reps could immediately be reached for comment.

Production has at least until this point been tentatively set for early 2010, which could prompt producers to act quickly on a director.

A remake of the French thriller “Anthony Zimmer” from 2005, “Tourist” centers on an American tourist who, on behalf of Interpol, goes undercover to entrap a former lover who’s a suspected global criminal. It follows in the long tradition of innocents caught up in shady activities abroad that dates back to Hitchcock (“The Man Who Knew Too Much”), Polanski (“Frantic”) and beyond, and a theme that also has contemporary echoes with “Taken” this past year.

It’s not the first time there’s been movement on “Tourist.” Tom Cruise had been loosely attached at an earlier point for the lead male role, but Sam Worthington will now play the part as he rides his “Terminator: Salvation” and “Avatar” hot streak.

There are few A-list females who producers like for lead action roles, and with Jolie not attached to star in any imminent projects post-“Salt,” “Tourist” is seen as a perfect itinerary for her.

[From The Hollywood Reporter, Risky Business blog]

It does sound like an interesting movie. Action-suspense, which I enjoy. Interesting that it’s being compared to Taken, which was sort of the surprise hit of this past Spring. I thought the ads for Taken looked terrible, so when I finally rented it, my expectations were very low. I was pleasantly surprised – Taken is actually a decent film, and a really good action movie if you’re in the mood for it.

I’m a little surprised that Angelina would actually take a role that was written for a woman – her last film, Salt, was written for a man (Tom Cruise) and had to be re-written for Angelina. It seems like The Tourist has been in development for so long, they probably considered rewriting both “the girl” role (Angelina’s) and “the boy” role (Sam Worthington’s). I think Sam and Angelina would make an interesting on-screen couple – the guy is hot, but a total moron if his interviews are any indication.

  3. BitterBetty says:

Her body looks really masculine in the Lara Croft photo.

  4. Kaboom says:

Taken had good action, Neeson was quite convincing but the deeply flawed story spoiled most of the fun.

  5. Tess says:

Increasingly hard to separate her private life (and role at the UN) from her on-screen personna du jour.

Probably will eventually erode her effectiveness in both arenas.

I see Poster 4 is in need for some attention this morning, not getting enough at home huh lol

It is a rumor for now, but I hope it is true and it sounds very interesting

Just because Angie is an ambassador for UNHCR doesn’t mean she is a peace activist or a pacifist. She is in favor of the dealth penalty and wants justice for people who have been victimized by violence. Especially Refugees who have been raped, mutiliated and killed. She has spoken about owning many guns and has stated she will kill a person who tries to harm her family. There is no hyprocricy in this area. Long Live the Second Ammendment

    Meh.

Glad to see her getting back into some serious action roles. “Wanted” was good on the action, but I was disappointed with the storyline. On the other hand, “Taken” had the opposite effect and it was surprisingly good. Hoping this movie will follow “Taken”‘s style a little more.

Love Angelina, such a beauty! She has so much more to offer than just a pretty face.

  14. Beth says:

The story is just a rumor not fact. “In talks” could just be the producer asking Angelina to read the script. I doubt she would take this role since it sounds similar to “Salt”. I don’t understand the part about being surprised that Angelina would do a role written for a woman. As far as I know all of her roles were always for females. “Salt” is an exception.

The home-wrecker got a job? Uau! Is it about a misstress who steals someone´s husband?? She would be very real on this…

  16. karen says:

She seems to be pigeon-holed in the action area, but I think that’s fine since there aren’t many action fems in Hollywood right now. At least she’s different from the rest.

I wonder why Charlize dropped out? Was the script bad? Or, did she get something better? Hmm . . .

  17. Firestarter says:

Chew- you forgot to add ‘Rubs lotion on the skin” WTF?

  18. boo says:

Chew – I think you forgot your meds today.

I love her movies – all of them and that is exactly what they are; movies. Movies don’t cause people to act violent.

  19. boo says:

“She puts the lotion in the basket”

    lol Firestarter!

  20. Miss Thang says:

Kaiser, how could you put up a Tomb Raider picture that doesn’t include Gerry!? What were you thinking!?

  21. missy says:

    Why she makes surch movies??????

  22. Kevin says:

Missy, she makes surch movies for the money.

  23. Eden says:

I love watching her in action movies, it makes me want to workout and kick some butt!!!

  24. Firestarter says:

    LOL@Kevin.

  25. d says:

Can’t help it, but love Jolie in her badass roles. They’re usually just a lot of fun. Though Wanted wasn’t that great. AlTHOUGH, James McAvoy made up for it in the best way.

  26. lucy2 says:

I’m not a fan of hers in general, but she is convincing in action roles. I think in dramas she tends to overact, but she’s well suited to action movies.
I do find it hard to buy her as an action hero when she’s as scrawny as she has been in recent years. I recently saw Wanted (which I thought was pretty bad) and she looked like a walking skeleton.

  27. Emily says:

Yeah, I’m hoping she’ll gain a bit of weight, both fat and muscle, to do this role. Or just, you know, because she needs to.

  28. d says:

re scrawny: I had the misfortune of watching one of Jolie’s early movies recently – Cyborg 2 (God. SO bad) – and her arms were kinda scrawny then too. she holds her shoulders the same way. she may always have been a bit thin and bony. I’m trying to remember what she was like in that movie with John Lee Miller (the first guy she married?) Hackers? Maybe she’s had a nose job since the early days, but anyway, meh, who cares. If I’m entertained by the movie, that’s all that matters – to me anyway. All this other stuff about her life…I have my own life to live, and what she does doesn’t really impact my life or how I live, can’t see the point of wasting energy getting worked up about what she does or doesn’t do. Like we really know the truth of it all anyway. Or that it’s any of our business.

    1. GTF over it.
    2. That implies there was a home TO BE WRECKED, which all signs indicate there wasn’t.
    3. Believe me, it takes two to make or kill a marriage. Jennifer and Brad are to blame for their own mess.
    4. GTF over it.

  30. cakes says:

Shes typecast into these roles like most actors and actresses

  31. Ursula says:

She almost always takes leftovers, Salt was for Tom Cruise, Mr and Mrs Smith was for Kidman and Pitt was for Aniston. LOL. But I just found it funny so I had to type it.

  32. Nicole says:

I see others weren’t crazy about Wanted, but I went to see that and I enjoyed it. I think she’s a great actress, but with all this Brangelina crap, I’m quickly getting sick of her.

  33. karen says:

@Hieronymus G. LOL, nice try but you can’t argue w/crazy. It’s amazing that some ppl are still holding a grudge for 5 yrs! You don’t know them! Ppl act like Brad was the 1st person in the history of man to divorce. Didn’t he KNOW that he’s NOT ALLOWED out of his marriage! 65% of America has divorced, but Brad is not allowed the same freedom? Like I said–completely nuts.

Way to go Angie, the highest paid actress in Hollywood according to the Hollywood Reporter 2009 list.Julia is #2 Reese #3

  35. snowball says:

Maybe I’m fixating because of my Gerry love, but since Tomb Raider, all her action roles just look like Lara Croft without the wife beater.

Angie probably is the highest paid actress because savvy directors and producers know *anything* she does (sneeze, wear a dress backwards, take her kids out for ice cream, etc.) gets her in every gossip mag. They don’t even need a big publicity budget, she comes with one built in.

  36. Femme Diana says:

I love Angelina Jolie in action roles, especially as Lara Croft 🙂
