At the start of the pandemic, The Batman’s production kept starting and stopping. It took more than a year to complete filming because of all of the lockdowns, quarantines and positive-Covid cases, including Monsieur Batdude himself, Robert Pattinson. Before he caught Covid, Pattinson was just some dude living in a flat with Suki Waterhouse, eating like a feral animal and NOT staying in shape for the movie. That spring, he gave a hilarious interview to GQ where he explained his gross eating habits and talked about how he wasn’t keeping in shape. The studio hired a trainer for him but he was, at the time, “ignoring her.” He told GQ:
“I think if you’re working out all the time, you’re part of the problem,” he says, sighing. By “you” he means other actors. “You set a precedent. No one was doing this in the ’70s. Even James Dean—he wasn’t exactly ripped.” He says that back when he was the star of the Twilight franchise, “the one time they told me to take my shirt off, I think they told me to put it back on again.” But Batman is Batman. Pattinson called another actor on the film, Zoë Kravitz, the other day, and she said she was exercising five days a week during their exile from set. Pattinson, well: “Literally, I’m just barely doing anything,” he says, sighing again.
That admission, while hilarious, went over like a lead balloon with Bat-fans and women and the studio. Even though Pattinson is well-known for saying stupid sh-t and lying his ass off in interviews, this admission FELT truthy. Well, now Pattinson is saying that it was sort of a lie, or just a very English way of trying not to brag:
As is often the case with Pattinson, the actor made a joke with dry humor only for it to get picked up across the internet and social media as fact. Pattinson set the record straight this week in an interview with MovieMaker that he did work out plenty in order to play Reeves’ iteration of Batman.
“That really came back to haunt me,” Pattinson said about the workout joke. “I just always think it’s really embarrassing to talk about how you’re working out. I think it’s like an English thing. Unless you are in the most unbelievable shape, where people are just genuinely curious, going, ‘How have you achieved, like, physical perfection?’ or whatever.”
Pattinson clarified, “You’re playing Batman. You have to work out. I think I was doing the interview when I was in lockdown, as well, in England…I was in a lower gear of working out.”
Pattinson compared the outrage over his “The Batman” workout joke to another bit of interview humor that has since followed him around as fact: “It’s the same thing as saying in an interview when I was like 21 that I didn’t wash my hair. It just sticks for 15 years.”
[From Variety]
Obviously, someone at Warner Bros screamed at him for hours after the GQ interview came out, and I would imagine his director Matt Reeves yelled too. But I found it funny! I still do. Rob was truly like “I’m going to play the Batman as a schlub with a beer gut, AND?” And yes, I’ll buy that it’s “very English” to be embarrassed to talk about workouts.

I LOL’ed at this headline. Of course. 😆
Also misread Batdude as Batitude. I think I need some more coffee.
Omg, I’m absolutely rolling at Batitude. I’m wheezingggg 🤣
I remember reading on here during the Twilight years that they had to paint abs on him when the was shirtless as Edward so when I saw the Batman trailer and his body I knew he’d been hard at work. I think he’s naturally very lean so it must be hard work to bulk out
Oh yeah, I gotta say in New Moon he is not what Edward is described to look like in the book lol which I thought was kind of lame since it was obvious he didn’t really workout and if he was a female he would be expected to look on point in a role like that.
LOL in the original GQ interview he said that when he took his shirt off for Twilight they immediately told him to put it back on.
This press tour is going to be entertaining
Ugh, this guy. I used to find it sort of amusing, but now I find him tiresome. He isn’t some misunderstood genius–he’s just some dork who happens to have unique bone structure that helps him give a good glowering look, but mostly, he’s just winging it.
That’s why he’s so entertaining- he is actually just winging it!
He has never professed to be any sort of genius, quite the opposite in fact. His professional reputation is great- he puts in the work and is very dedicated by all accounts. But with the media he clearly is a loose cannon.
Exactly @Anname. He gets such pleasure trying to spoof the media.
This is a different Batman, ya know? Like, I’m sure he needs to be in shape but the version of Batman that he’s playing isn’t a ‘roided up, thick-necked superhero guy.
Anyway, I remember in that same interview he mentioned going for a run so he was obviously had some sort of fitness routine.
Bottom line, Rob loves to troll the media/press. I never take much of what he says in press interviews too seriously. 😀
I think he’s hilarious and very entertaining. I still have a soft spot for him.
No woman would be able to get away with this, and if a woman of color tried it?!!
I wish one of these skinny English artistes would acknowledge their privilege when delivering their “witty” remarks for their online fangirls.
What Teecee said. His attitude reeks of entitlement. Remember when Kumail Nanjiani was getting buff and the interviews he did? It was clear he was working extremely hard. And I doubt he could have gotten away with half assing it or even implying as much in interviews.
This Robert Patterson guy has been in some of the most interesting flicks I’ve seen in the past 3-4 years. Good Time, The King, the friggen Lighthouse! He’s one of the greats. I just watched the Lighthouse and it was probably the best film I’ve seen in the past, well, ever? I never want to watch it again, but whoa. Holy cow. I ain’t no professional in this area, but this Batman could be something super interesting. Let’s just say, if it fails, it won’t be because of him, if that makes any sense? Dare I say he’s so good, he could even make Star Wars look good, and that ain’t easy these days…yikes…
