Prince Andrew will attend his late father’s memorial service ‘alongside the Queen’

We were told for weeks in advance that Queen Elizabeth’s Accession Day would be spent quietly, in reflection of her 70 years on the throne. Then the Queen stepped out for an event at Sandringham and the palace released several new photos and videos. It was kind of odd, especially since QEII seemed… okayish. She was walking with a cane, but generally she seemed pretty with it for a 95 year old. So what were the past four months about? I still don’t know.

In any case, the Queen returned to Windsor on Monday, and her people briefed the press that Liz was expecting to resume her normal duties and keep up a public schedule. One of the things on her new schedule: an appearance at a Service of Thanksgiving honoring Prince Philip. They finally set the date for it: March 29th. As part of her return to work, she must have been promised something very special: the chance to spend time with Prince Andrew. The memorial service will happen just weeks after Andrew is deposed in Virginia Guiffre’s civil case against him for sexual abuse. Now sources say that Andrew will attend his father’s memorial service “alongside the queen.”

Prince Andrew is set to appear alongside the Queen to attend a remembrance service for his father the Duke of Edinburgh next month. The monarch, 95, who has since returned to Windsor Castle to resume her duties, will appear alongside the Duke to attend a thanksgiving service for Prince Philip on March 29 at Westminster Abbey.

The Duke of Edinburgh – the nation’s longest-serving consort – died aged 99 on April 9, just two months before he would have turned 100.

This news comes after it emerged last weekend that the Duke of York is set to meet lawyers representing Virginia Roberts in London on March 10 – nearly three weeks before the remembrance service – where he will testify under oath according to sources close to the royal.

Personally, I think if the story was “Andrew will attend the service,” that would be… okay? Like, Philip was still his father, and while I think Andrew is a sniveling, pathetic bully and rapist, I don’t have an issue with him mourning someone in his family. The issue is that it’s being framed as “Andrew will appear alongside the Queen.” As in, he’ll be beside her, just like he was at Philip’s funeral (he was the one seated closest to her at the service). The problem is that we know the Queen’s nature is to do the most to protect Andrew and make excuses for him and try to rehabilitate his image, even at the expense of her own. That’s what makes it uncomfortable.

    Andrew is Porchie’s son, obviously.

    • Noki says:

Now i can see how even someone like the Queen getting infactuated with someone else especially since she had no other love interest since she was young other than Phillip. His affairs must have made it easier for her to LIKE someone else, but having any other relations or a child is a bridge too far for someone like her and her ‘family values’ and reputation.

    • Jaded says:

He is NOT Porchie’s son. Andrew was conceived AFTER Philip came back from a long naval excursion. The Queen and Porchie had a deep friendship and bonded over their mutual love of horses, it was an emotional affair rather than physical. As @Noki commented, the Queen would never have an affair outside of her marriage, she is the head of the Church of England and upholds its family values.

      • SarahLee says:

Geez, @Jaded – hit a nerve? “The Queen would never……” LOL! And WTH not? I also think the original comment was in jest.

“…….the Queen would never have an affair outside of her marriage, she is the head of the Church of England and upholds its family values.”

Erm…..how come this sounds so full of irony…..like a laugh held in check.

      • teecee says:

Kings who were the Heads of the Church of England had affairs all the time? This just seems like a naive statement. The only reason she may have restrained herself a bit is because she’s a woman, and the rules have always been different for us (the men see to that.) Even then, women heads of church and state have also had lovers.

    • Lexistential says:

I totally think he’s Porchie’s son. He has a really strong resemblance to Porchie’s grandmother Almina Carnarvon (who herself was born an illegitimate Rothschild). Nor has he inherited the slender body types of King George VI/Prince Philip- Prince Charles and Prince Edward have that slimmer physique, and Andrew is anything but.

      • Bread and Circuses says:

The problem is so many English aristocrats look alike. When I look at Prince Andrew’s face, I don’t see much of Lord Porchester there, but I also don’t see much of Prince Philip there. If there’s a resemblance, it could come from generations of inbreeding rather than some more direct genetic input.

To me, there’s a hint of Prince Philip’s eyebrows in Prince Andrew’s eyebrows. And Andrew may have gotten the stockier build from his mother.

  2. Chaine says:

Yeah I don’t have a problem with him attending his dad memorial service with his mom. That’s not really an official duty. Even convicted criminals get let out sometimes to come to funerals.

    • Lizzie Bathory says:

I actually don’t have a problem with it either, but it feels odd to put out a story about it. My guess is this is like the test balloon stories about Andrew wearing his military uniform to Philip’s funeral when Harry wouldn’t be allowed to do the same. I suspect the Queen & Andrew would like to attend this together but the courtiers are worried about backlash (especially post-deposition), so they’re trying to gauge the public mood.

  3. BothSidesNow says:

Yes, of course he will be there next to his Mummy. Let’s face it, without her, he would be homeless and no longer have personal protection, the final payment for the Lodge or be seen in public. Pedrew has one ally in his corner and she is at deaths door, so he is holding on for dear life. Granted PP was his father as well.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of his “family” treat him.

  4. lunchcoma says:

I see your point about the alongside thing. My initial reaction was that banning even someone horrible from his father’s memorial service seemed like a bit much, but there are other ways to go about allowing him to attend than seating him right next to the Queen.

  5. Jais says:

Yeah framing it as he’s attending alongside the queen is a choice. Just why? Does the queen want it known that she is still supporting Andrew? At this point, it’s pretty clear that the queen does not have the best instincts or judgment. That’s been known for a while but this is just another confirmation.

  6. susan says:

So I think QEII looked pretty good in these photos.

    A bit of medical perspective:
she has lost a great deal of weight. Her clothing doesn’t fit.
I suspect one of her medical issues is compression fractures in her spine, from osteoporosis. She may be wearing a back brace. Also getting shots of a bone builder (calcitonin) which can help relieve the pain.

her “glam squad” is doing a very good job, as likely is her physical therapist.

    • Laura-Lee MacDonald says:

I agree (I work in community health care) but I did make a crack in my head that maybe she has a bacta tank? Uh. Any other Boba Fett fans here? Hopefully? Ha!

  7. Jay says:

But which uniform will he try to trot out? We know how much Andrew loves to flash his medals and braid, regardless of his honourary military patronages trying their best to distance themselves from him. Pity the queen is doing the opposite.

I think Andy is delusional enough to say he’s just wearing his fanciest regalia to honour his late father. Everyone will love it and see it as a sign of respect!

If you were Charles, and you have bought in to the continuity of the monarchy at all costs, honouring the direct line of heirs, etc etc, how would you feel about this? Or is this the quid pro quo, vocally support queen Camilla and I won’t raise a fuss about you being escorted by your favourite boy. Or maybe QEII don’t give a single f#*& anymore.

  8. LeonsMomma says:

My grandmother lived to 99 and I have to say Queen Elizabeth looks great for 95. My grandmother started to get significantly smaller at 95. Also, the skin is paper thin, so it bruised easily and I know anything tight fitting (such as a bra) was painful and would create bruising and sores. My grandmother was a tall strong Scotswoman and I swear when she turned 95 and became so fragile in person, it looked like she could topple over with a small breeze. In photos, she looked fine.

  9. Charm says:

They say this now. This is how these men-behind-the-curtain operate….they fly a kite and then, based on the volume of public outcry, they swerve.

Two things about this: (1) its definitely a quid pro quo: the announcement of camilla as queen consort in return for no more leaks/bad-mouthing from the palaces abt andrew.

    (2) its definitely a kite being flown as show of support leading up to his Mar 10 deposition. However, if the stories leaked from the depo turn out to be as bad as the BBC News Night intvw (and I expect the aftermath of the depo to be worse) then watch them make a swerve on this slap to the face about “alongside the queen.”

    • Jay says:

Yes, that seems about right – if things go poorly, suddenly we’ll hear that Andrew (who supposedly will storm out of a room and remake his entrance again if he doesn’t get enough claps) wouldn’t want to draw focus on this solemn occasion, and will support his dear mum from afar. So noble!

  10. Mrs.Krabapple says:

“to protect Andrew and make excuses for him and try to rehabilitate his image, even at the expense of her own” — imho, the Queen’s image SHOULD be damaged. She and other members of that family enabled Andrew and his crimes for years/decades. They share in the blame, and should not be let off the hook for their part in it.

  11. Fascinating+Fascinator says:

It’s just SO shocking that they completely assume Andrew will have zero new problems following the deposition. I personally can’t wait to see what happens after that depo. If the after math of the Newsnight interview was the warm up act of his downfall, just wait until a deposition. Looking forward to seeing what ends up happening with this church service – keep us posted! 🙏
