Mia Farrow’s 21-year-old son Ronan gets high-level State Dept. appointment

ronanfarrow
Ronan Allen, the 21-year-old biological son of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen has been appointed to a high-level State Department position. According to Politico and other sources, Ronan was appointed as a liason between the Richard Holbrook (the special envoy to Pakistan) and humanitarian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) working in Pakistan, such as Save the Children, Church World Service, the International Rescue Committee. When people realized that someone so young (with such famous parentage) was given such a high position, you can bet that some feathers were ruffled.

One critic (from an NGO) was anonymously quoted as saying, “You have seasoned, experienced NGO officials dealing with some very sensitive foreign policy and humanitarian aid issues, whose main contact in Holbrooke’s office is a 21 year old whose experience has been travelling to southern Sudan with his mom.” Translation: Holbrooke should have hired me! Another unnamed source sniffed, “It was a surprise but we don’t see this really as a big deal. He’s not the only point of contact for us.” Translation: We don’t want to talk to the kid, so we’ll go over his head. Holbrooke’s office is holding strong, though. The State Department even officially defended Ronan, saying “He’s very qualified for the job, and has already helped explain the current situation (regarding) Pakistani procurements to key NGOs.”

To his credit, Ronan does seem rather qualified. He’s something of a wunderkind. He was accepted to Yale Law School before he was 16 years old, but deferred to work as a Special Assistant to Richard Holbrooke. He ended up entering Yale Law in 2006, and graduated earlier this year. Ronan has also published essays and articles on Darfur and human rights issues for the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, and Forbes Magazine. His previous jobs include a gig with the United Nations Children’s Fund, a UNICEF spokesperson for youth and he also helped his mother in her work for Darfur. He’s also kind of hot – don’t judge him from these older pictures from 2004. He does take after his mother more than his father, but now that he’s all grown up, his features aren’t so delicate, and he’s a babe! (see current pictures here, here and here).

Special Representative to Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke has appointed Mia Farrow’s 21 year old son as his team’s liaison to non-governmental organizations working in Pakistan, humanitarian group officials tell POLITICO.

Representatives from Save the Children, Church World Service, the International Rescue Committee, and Care met with Holbrooke this week to talk about what his team is trying to do with humanitarian assistance in Pakistan, an NGO official told POLITICO on condition of anonymity.

And there’s this young guy with Holbrooke who nobody recognizes, the humanitarian group official said. And Holbrooke tells the group that this is Ronan Farrow, who will be his special liaison to NGOs working in Pakistan. And that among Farrow’s experience, he has traveled to southern Sudan with his mom.

(Actress Mia Farrow has been an advocate for international action to stop genocide in Darfur.)

“You have seasoned, experienced NGO officials dealing with some very sensitive foreign policy and humanitarian aid issues, whose main contact in Holbrooke’s office is a [21] year old whose experience has been traveling to southern Sudan with his mom,” the humanitarian official said, describing the NGO representatives in the meeting as taken aback by the news.

Ronan Farrow’s Wikipedia page says that he was born in 1987, with the birth name of Satchell Ronan O’Sullivan Farrow, the son of Mia Farrow and Woody Allen (and the subject of their famous custody dispute). But while he’s only 21 (he turns 22 in December), Farrow’s biography describes him as something of a prodigy, who has worked in some unspecified capacity for Holbrooke since he was a teenager. It says he was admitted to Yale Law School when he was 16 years old, but deferred admission until 2006 to “work as a Special Assistant to Richard Holbrooke, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations” and for additional work as a UNICEF spokesperson for youth. He apparently recently graduated from Yale Law School.

A State Department official confirmed the appointment, and said Farrow was qualified for it, and brings solid NGO experience with Save Darfur, and UNICEF. “He’s very qualified for the job, and has already helped explain the current situation re: Pakistani procurements to key NGOs, including a meeting he organized today with InterAction and its affiliated NGOs.”

“Kid’s a friggin’ genius,” another official said. “And a true activist for Darfur … Went to college at age 11 and then to law school at 16.”

Another associate of Farrow’s writes, on condition of anonymity: “I know and have worked with Ronan Farrow. … I can reveal that his actual title at State is as Special Advisor on Humanitarian and NGO Affairs … He has the policy chops. He wrote columns on human rights issues for the Wall Street Journal, LA Times and International Herald Tribune for years. Working for UNICEF – not just with his mother in Sudan, but in Eritrea, Angola, and Nigeria – is just a fraction of what got him hired. He was a human rights law guy at the House Foreign Affairs Committee, ran a research team for the CDC in Nairobi, and has testified as an expert witness before Congress repeatedly. … He’s young but he has a depth of experience that many people twice his age lack. ….”

[From Politico]

I’m fascinated by child geniuses. The Doogie Howsers of the world are so cool. I think that’s what Ronan is – I mean, college at the age of 11, Yale Law School at 16? So. Awesome. He’ll probably be president in 20 years. Either that, or he’ll crash and burn like those Enron guys (they were allegedly “the smartest guys in the room”). But Ronan’s hot! No one that hot can be bad, right? Forget Sparkles Pattinson, I’d go cougar for Ronan. He looks like such a baby in the 2004 pics below, but he turned out so hot.

Wow, he sounds brilliant and very driven. He has two intelligent, creative parents, so it’s no wonder. But the cynic in me can’t help saying that he wouldn’t have had the jobs/experiences he’s had without those parents and his wealthy upbringing. I’m sure he works hard, but money definitely does buy opportunity.

  2. Roma says:

Although his name may have originally got him noticed, any kid that intelligent (ie law school by 16) would make things happen for himself. And I agree Kaiser, I’d so coug it up for him.

  3. Firestarter says:

    Good for him.

  4. Maritza says:

His parents must be so proud of him.

  5. Tess says:

Wasn’t his original name Satchel or something like that?

  6. YoMomma says:

Thank god he got his mother’s looks. His eyes are BEAUTIFUL. I honestly didn’t know that Woody had any biological children except the one he had with this adopted daughter. Woody is a smart guy so I guess he gets his brains from his dad.

  7. bros says:

he looks like a woman. and also, he may be qualified for a mid level job in the state department, but not something with this much sensitivity and this much at stake. pakistan is probably our #1 international problem, and even though he has a law degree, his years of experience in the field seems light. im sure that other, more qualified but less famous and connected people were passed over for this, also with law degrees, 10 or more years experience, and probably speak pashto or urdu. smart as he may be, the kid is an interloper and it makes me nervous that mia farrows kid is close to anything with this much consequence. it doesnt even appear that he has been to either country or has any special near east/central asian academic background. i think this is foolish.

  8. YT says:

Wow! I have not seen pictures of him in years, and he certainly has matured from the delicate looking kid he once was.

Years ago there were stories about his mom driving him for miles (hours) to his daily classes. Very hands-on and supportive.

Nice to see his genius being used to benefit others. The organizations should be proud of his involvement.

  9. Jillian says:

What a gorgeous boy. I love his mom and dad. A little suprised Woody could produce such a lovely child who apparently has none of his genes.

  10. J says:

Well, Celebitchy writer’s logic is so funny.

According to this celebrity-family logic, the young Sakorzy in France should get his position in La Defence as well. Why do the French public protest so much? He came from a privildged family, his parents are so creative and famous, SO he must be brilliant! Because he is so beautiful!

Oh, people are simply jealous. That’s right. They should get over themselves because they are so plain, born of the wrong parents.

  11. nycmom10024 says:

Allen’s kids with current wife are adopted not bio. But he does appear to be a doting father to the girls.

But my own personal radar still says ick.

Ronan is beautiful and brillant, congrats to him.

  12. Zee says:

This is fantastic! However, there are so many qualified, highly-educated Americans of Pakistani descent who would love to be part of these efforts. I know friends who have tried to get a foot in the door, but it just won’t happen. Don’t you think having an American who speaks the language, understands the culture and can be a bridge builder can be a good liaison too? Just a thought but i do agree that this young man is qualified.

  13. Bina says:

This should be interesting… I live in Pakistan and I’ll keep an eye out for this guy.

  14. lio says:

@J: the difference between Ronan Farrow (Allen?) and Jean Sarkozy is that the first one is a brilliant student while the second one is a complete failure who just have his family name and his father’s friends to get a job

  15. Jazz says:

It’s refreshing to see at least someone in Hollywood is teaching their kids to be worthwhile citizens of the world. Unlike the Cyrus’ and Lohans.

  16. bros says:

lio: being a brilliant student is not qualification to have a high level job of the greatest significance when you have literally no experience nor schooling in middle east/central asian politics nor speak any of the languages or have familiarity with the culture. this remains a ridiculous appointment and its pretty embarrassing.

  17. hmm says:

He is an extremely accomplished young man and his parents should be proud. At his already young age he has committed himself to international issues and is doing the work. Perhaps younger eyes that are not so wrapped up in politics and personal gain is a good thing. Perhaps we should see how he does before we declare it ‘ridiculous or embarrassing’.

  18. Tia C says:

Tess – yes, his name was Satchel. I was wondering the same thing, and on Woody Allen’s Wikipedia page it says that Satchel now goes by Ronan. I guess he didn’t care for being named after a bag. I wouldn’t, either.

What a fine looking young man though – I can’t believe he’s Woody Allen’s offspring! Who woulda thunk it?

  19. bros says:

hmmm: no problem if he were in an entry level position. but a high level appointment is not the place to experiment with how well the young lad might do. and this isnt the international scenario to have someone so untested on the job. to get that job, you are supposed to have already proven yourself at various stages in your career-not be jettisoned to the top simply because of name recognition and favors.

  20. Firestarter says:

He was actually named after Satchel Paige, the American league baseball player.

  21. MoMo says:

Very impressive , I hope he does a great job and I wish him all the luck in the world !

  22. Tia C says:

@ Firestarter – I know, I was just being silly. I still wouldn’t want to be named after a bag tho, even if it is a real name… just sayin! 🙂

  23. Firestarter says:

TiaC-Agreed. His new name is much nicer.

  24. Tess says:

    Thanks, Tia C.
    !!!

  25. birdie says:

Ronan Seamus is a very Irish name, he may have taken it on to feel closer to his mother and more distanced from his father.

On Wiki he says this about Woody Allen: “He’s my father married to my sister. That makes me his son and his brother-in-law. That is such a moral transgression. I cannot see him. I cannot have a relationship with my father and be morally consistent…. I lived with all these adopted children, so they are my family. To say Soon-Yi was not my sister is an insult to all adopted children.”

  26. Green Is Good says:

Thank god he looks like his mother. Woody Allen is a troll, and his last good movie was Crimes and Misdemeanors.

  27. Cheyenne says:

He sounds like a brilliant young man and very accomplished. He’s very, very young for such a position but he may be able to handle it.

On the superficial side: thank God he looks like Mom instead of Woody.

  28. Cheyenne says:

J: Well, Celebitchy writer’s logic is so funny. According to this celebrity-family logic, the young Sakorzy in France should get his position in La Defence as well. Why do the French public protest so much? He came from a privildged family, his parents are so creative and famous, SO he must be brilliant! Because he is so beautiful!

Hands down the silliest post I’ve ever read on this blog. The difference between Ronan Farrow and Jean Sarkozy is probably about 100 IQ points.

  29. Jojo says:

    SHE IS STILL GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  30. asiont says:

I never have heared of him but he’s a hottie

  31. Raven says:

What Ronan fails to say on the Wiki page is that his sister Soon Yi has a different adoptive father. She is a half sister by adoption to him.

What I wonder is where are all those Asian kids adopted by Mia. I remember one of them saying that they were treated like servants and I notice that Ronan seemed to travel with her, but not the others. I have a manager in my office at work who adopted 3 Chinese kids. Her biological daughter was sent to private school and is now in college, but the adopted kids attend public school. The manager claims she doesn’t cook or clean. I suspect these kids are being raised as servants and it reminded me of Mia and her kids.

  32. anneesezz says:

How soon before Angelina Jolie tries to get Shiloh this job? AJ wants to be Mia Farrow in the worst way!

  33. TinaWithPom says:

@ Raven – your post made me wince.

  34. Essie says:

Ronan has not seen Woody since he was about two years old. There is no relationship so I seriously doubt Woody is proud of Ronan. Also, Ronan’s last name is Farrow and always has been!!

Anyway, Ronan is a very smart young man and I’m sure he will do a great job. He has to with the IQ he probably has. Plus, he seems very dedicated (just like his mother) to the people of Darfur. Good luck to him.

  35. bros says:

how in the world does anyone know what IQ he has? how is that qualification for any job regardless of title or dutues?

  36. Gigohead says:

What a hunk! He has turned into such a handsome man!!! I’m glad he got this job and he would be embarrassed to take if it was solely based on his parents fame. He was born committed to children worldwide like his mom.

  37. Mia Farrow is a true angel on this earth,in my eyes at least. She has been a great mother to all of her children, providing wonderful and needed medical care to the children that needed such care. Her children have been blessed greatly by her love and devotion. Ronan is an exceptional young man, but then he has an exceptional mother. He also has a father who is a genius
