Wow, and just like that, it’s over. Jerry Hall and Rupert Murdoch have settled their divorce, not even two full months after Jerry filed in California. Despite the Murdoch PR that Ol’ Rupert was the one who wanted to get out of the marriage, it looked very much like Jerry surprised the Murdochs by releasing the information to a rival newspaper (the NY Times) and then filing for divorce in California, as opposed to New York or London. Hall probably could have waited it out and really fought for a nice chunk of Rupert’s money. I think he probably offered her a nice settlement and she took it.
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch and former model Jerry Hall have swiftly finalized their divorce, which comes six years after they tied the knot. The erstwhile couple announced the end of their marriage on the same day that Hall requested that her divorce petition be dismissed in Los Angeles Superior Court.
“Jerry and Rupert Murdoch have finalized their divorce. They remain good friends and wish each other the best for the future,” Murdoch’s attorney Robert S. Cohen and Hall’s attorney Judith L. Poller said in a joint statement to The Times.
The NewsCorp. executive chairman, 91, and Hall, 66, married in 2016, and news of their separation went public in June. The “Batman” actor filed for divorce in Los Angeles on July 1 citing “irreconcilable differences” and seeking unspecified spousal support and attorneys’ fees.
On Wednesday, Hall asked the court to dismiss her petition without prejudice — meaning she could refile — though it is unclear if she did so because they agreed to settle the divorce out of court. The petition said that Hall was “unaware of the full nature and extent of all (Murdoch’s) assets and debts, and will amend this petition when the information has been ascertained,” Reuters reported. Forbes estimates that Murdoch, whose media empire includes Fox News, the Times of London and the Wall Street Journal, has a net worth of about $19.6 billion.
What’s your guess on the settlement? It happened so swiftly, I doubt Jerry and her lawyers even had time to even begin to look through the Murdoch assets. I also think it went so quickly because they don’t have children together – I remember the huge fight between Murdoch and Wendi Deng during their divorce, and so much of it was about whether Wendi and Rupert’s two daughters would be included in the family trust (they were, in the end). Hall knew she wasn’t getting her hands on any of that. She basically wanted a settlement for her retirement, enough where she can live comfortably and well for the next 30 years, plus at least one good piece of real estate.
Speaking of, the Daily Mail had a dishy piece about what Hall may have gotten and what Murdoch refused to give up. The astonishing figure the Mail has for Jerry’s settlement: “$269 million, plus two houses.” Shocking. Murdoch’s people are whispering that it’s more like $61 million though, which sounds much more reasonable. Plus, Murdoch got out quickly and cleanly, which is what he wanted. The Mail also says that Hall asked for the Murdoch family ranch in Montana but she was denied. She also asked for the Moraga vineyard in Bel Air, but that’s one of Murdoch’s favorite properties so he said no. Jerry will get one of the UK properties – a $13 million house in Henley – and one home in France, which Rupert bought for her four years ago. And what? Maybe a property in America too.

With likely an all encompassing prenup in place, this was likely a rubber stamping exercise.
I am guessing they were matched up for mutual benefit – Jerry her money woes and RM to soften his image had Trump remained in office.
She’s an older woman who already lives well – $60 mil and a couple houses is a good deal. Engaging in some crazy court fight wouldn’t have been worth it.
Yeah. It was a minimum yet good return on her investment (and probably reflective of their agreement) —$10 million for every year + 2 houses, given her age and no children involved. That seems like the going rate. Get in and get out after 5 years (with them both re-evaluating it at that time). Likely from her perspective, add in a couple months after that, up to a year, so that it can’t be contested. They are both mature adults. They’ve been to the rodeo several times. This wasn’t blind love. This was work for her & a token indulgence for him.
I agree. $60MM and two houses is more than enough to live well for the rest of her life. It’s also something to leave her kids who are going to have to split their Mick inheritance with how many other kids – I think the last count was maybe eight children with five different women that we know of. That assumes that Sir Mick Skinflint doesn’t decide to leave the whole lot to a museum with his name on it of course.
After putting up with RM for 6 years, Jerry deserves fair compensation.
She wasn’t forced to marry or stay with him. I find it hard to feel bad or happy for either one of them. Who deserves fair compensation are all the victims of his media empire.
@equality–exactly!
Why anyone who feel sorry for her is mind-blowing to me! she voluntarily married a well known scumbag!
I guess some women would do a lot for a few millions…that’s ok by the way for those; those who deserve sympathy are the people whose lives are destroyed by his hate machine! I don’t see this woman as very different from Murdoch himself!
She’s the only person who can decide “fair”. If she is happy with his offer, and it sounds as if she is because she accepted it, then that is the only thing that matters.
SIX YEARS??!! Man, that flew by.
Anyway, good for Jerry — when you marry for money you earn every penny.
He settled to keep the extent of his alleged $19 billion wealth private. She filed in a community state. She is aware that she can be entitled to half his earnings during the marriage.
Murdoch listened to legal advice that acknowledged that it will be prudent to settle, so he made Jerry an offer she could not refuse.
Regarding her filing in California, I wonder if RM would have been able to contest the jurisdiction? It doesn’t appear they spent much couple time in Cali. Or does the fact that one of his homes is in there automatically grant it?
He was advised to settle for that very reason, it was one of their homes purchased after their marriage, so on that basis it was clear why she chose that domicile, instead of the UK and France.
I would love to know what really happened to these two such as: was it his kids that drove them apart or was it his political views or did Jerry get tired off all non-stop travelling or something completely different???
Inquiring Minds Want to Know!
Me personally, I think Jerry realized she did not want to be a nurse maid in HER later years. She is only 66 now and can and should enjoy life.
Take the money, lose the husband-patient and enjoy life.
And those kids being douchbags sure didn’t help as she was the one who always made sure family events included them. She was never gonna be or want what their mother, Anna, did. Jerry really was all about being a socialite wife.
If Murdoch’s health is not up to snuff, Jerry would have still been entitled to something after his death and for his kids to believe that she shouldn’t is a them problem. She would not have wanted a seat on the board. Come on now.
The rumors are that Murdoch’s kids, especially Lachlan, pushed her out. During the pandemic she was insisting on strict covid protocol to keep Rupert from getting sick. Lachlan is too powerful to do that to. At the recent grandchild marriage family swarmed all over him with no mask.
Here’s hoping Rupert goes to his final reward/just deserts, in the next wave.
Lachlan and his dad are going to be busy with the Dominion case which looks like its going to trial.
Their marriage is still a head scratched and came out of nowhere.
But I adored and still do Jerry’s look for her wedding.
I like her wedding day look too.
Jerry got two expensive homes one in England and one in France and 61 million dollars, well played Jerry! In regards to those two expensive homes, she should sell them and buy one lesser home that will be her homestead. Most likely those two homes are very expensive to maintain and run. The property taxes alone must be hundreds of thousands of dollars a year. She will need a staff and upkeep to to keep them looking good. Rupert can afford such expenditures but not her unless she wants to spend the 61 millions dollars on them. Just sell them and buy a smaller home that she can afford.
I wonder is maintenance, taxes, etc on those homes is part of the settlement. He will be responsible for paying for them, not her.
Nice to see a swift, equitable settlement – no years-long dragging out & slagging off in the press. A divorce with no rancor or revenge in mind – I wish Brad/Ang & Johnny/Amber would take notice and think.
If you’re fifty-five and marry an eighty-six-year-old billionaire who makes a living making other people’s lives miserable, that’s straight-up gold-digging. Jerry Hall is the epitome of a golddigger. I give her credit. If you’re going for the money, make it worth it. I wish her well. They must use the same skin care therapists because his skin looks as good as hers.
