Prince Harry: My mother ‘most certainly will never be forgotten’

Prince Harry was in Aspen last week for the annual Sentebale Polo Cup, a charity polo match. Harry flew from Montecito to Aspen to play polo, glad-hand donors and attend a dinner for Sentebale, the charity he cofounded in 2006 to provide support to people and children with AIDS in Lesotho. After Harry and Nacho Figueras’ team won – with Harry scoring two goals – Harry made a speech at the post-polo-match dinner. The dinner was held at the St. Regis Aspen Resort, and he spoke about his mother:

“My dear friend Prince Seeiso and I founded Sentebale 16 years ago in honor of our mothers with a mission to support many of the most vulnerable young people on the planet—and to give them care and help so that they can thrive,” he said. “In Sesotho, the language of the Basotho—the word Sentebale means ‘forget-me-not.'”

“Next week is the 25th anniversary of my mother’s death, and she most certainly will never be forgotten. I want it to be a day filled with memories of her incredible work and love for the way that she did it. I want it to be a day to share the spirit of my mum with my family, with my children, who I wish could have met her,” Harry said.

He added that every day, he hopes to “do her proud” and is inspired by her tireless work to support and destigmatize those experiencing HIV/AIDS.

“Fittingly, her favorite flowers were forget-me-nots,” he said. “I hope we can remember my mother’s legacy by recommitting to those that we serve, whoever and wherever they may be. For Sentebale, our commitment is to ending HIV and providing meaningful care and support for the children and young people whose lives have been affected by this disease. Because they, too, will never be forgotten.”

The duke also introduced a special music video written and produced by three young artists from Lesotho titled We Are the Future. The short film told a story “grounded in the agency of young people, who are the changemakers at the center of solutions that they know work best for their communities,” per a representative.

While Diana never met her grandchildren, I believe she’s looking out for them, all of them. Especially Archie and Lili, as her youngest son faces the kind of life-threatening barrage of horsesh-t she similarly faced. Harry really got so many of the Spencer genes – the temper, the joy, the red hair, the charisma. I always wonder if that was another reason why Charles was fine with Harry leaving – Harry was always too much of a reminder of Diana and Charles couldn’t have that.

It’s heartening to see him sticking up for his mum at a time when the official family line is to smear her. I think she would have been very proud of him.

  2. Southern Fried says:

I really believe the same, that Diana is looking out for them and very proud of Harry. It’s been said before but worth repeating the fact that he chose to protect his wife and family over the monarchy which would have been her dream life for him. Charles and Bad Grandma threw her to the wolves. It’s heartbreaking that Willy has not stayed true to his own mother. She was right, prophetic even, about her Good King Harry.

I too believe as Kaiser stated, Harry reminds his father too much of his mother. I continue to wish Harry and his family light and blessings as they navigate their journey. It is incredibly saddening to see how his father casted him aside so easily. A reminder of how careless he was in the treatment towards his mother as well as the complete lack of care he showed her. Karma will not be kind to that family. They will rue the day they betrayed the Sussexes.

@ Maxine Branch, it does seem to cement the comment with regards to the article featuring Meghan that Harry lost his father as well once they left Salty Island of the Petty and Jealous. I too wish them nothing but happiness, love, peace and joy. May Archie and Lili grow up living free from prying eyes and royal expectations as well. And may Karma come calling to all that betrayed, lied, smeared and endangered their lives, especially Meghan.

Charles could possibly realize his mistakes and make an apology in Montecito, without purpose of his own image, then possibly their relationship would rebuild, carefully on H side to be certain. This is all contingent on Charles though so I am not holding my breathe.

The guy in the second picture played Rugby for New Zealand All Blacks, now he is an Ambassador for Sentebale, Harry sure knows how to network.

    • Southern Fried says:

No kidding! All the wonderful people in his life and the causes he champions prove Harry is a great person. That seems to be in direct opposition to Willy’s world. How that must piss Willy and Kate off.

      • Both Sides Now says:

@ Jan, how fabulous!! What a lovely partnership as well as friendship too, I would think.

Willy the Wanker only has superficial friends v no true friendships. As for CruelCate, we know her story….

    • Feebee says:

Wow, I had no idea Dan Carter was involved. Yes, Harry networking game is A+ as Carter was no ordinary All Black. He was Tom Brady-level.

    • Steph says:

I’ve always felt that his networking skills are his second biggest asset, the first being a prince. He’s really good at getting and keeping people on board with his projects.

  5. K8erade says:

If I were the ghost of Diana, I would rest easy knowing Harry has grown into the man he has. I genuinely believe wherever she is, she’s incredibly proud of him.

  6. C-Shell says:

So poignant. No, Harry, we will not forget Diana. I can’t believe it’s been 25 years. Her spirit is as fresh today as it was then, and that’s in large part due to Harry honoring and carrying on her legacy.

Also, Polo Harry pics **never** get old!

    • Both Sides Now says:

@ C-Shell, no, we won’t and would never forget Diana. As Diana was a year older than me, I fondly remember her from when she married Charles, which I woke up in the middle of the night to watch no less, to her travels across the world. As for Harry, his is a Spencer through and through, much like his aunts. And Harry is certainly not going to forget his Mum as he seems intent on keeping her memories and activism alive and well supported.

On a nasty side note, if I remember correctly when Charles saw Harry he made mention that he looked like a Spencer and trotted off to do his thing. Apparently being born a Spencer to Charles was an insult to either him or his genetics. But he has Willy the Wanker to have and to hold as he is certainly a Windsor through and through.

As part of her generation, I have the same reaction to what my parents had when Kennedy was shot. I remember where I was, what I was doing and how I reacted, first with shock thinking that it was a mistaken statement. I guess we all have moments that rocked our generations, in one form or another.

25 years probably went by quickly for him, relative to the loss of his mom and the hole it’s left in his heart. The last time he saw her alive must feel like yesterday. Loss and grief are strange things. They warp time, like black holes.

  8. Lady D says:

OT: Does anyone else think Harry is learning Castilian Spanish?

    • Both Sides Now says:

Of course he is!! Probably from Meghan!!! I love Castilian Spanish, my father and my entire maternal side still live in Argentina.

BA is such a gorgeous and vibrant city 💗💗. If any one wants a fabulous place to visit, eat steak, dance, drink and purchase fabulous leather goods as well, head to BA!! I can’t wait to go back and visit family!!

“I always wonder if that was another reason why Charles was fine with Harry leaving – Harry was always too much of a reminder of Diana and Charles couldn’t have that.”

This is an excellent point and I believe it’s true. There’s a reason why Harry always says he’s his mother’s son and I think it’s because Charles probably threw that him in his fits of anger towards him.
