I get that some people don’t like Kristen Stewart. Some find her smug, incoherent, bratty and snotty. Some people think that she needs to get a grip. Some people think that she needs to understand that the world does not revolve around her. I am not one of those people, although I will admit that I do find her bratty, in that way that all 19-year-old girls are brats. I like and defend Kristen because she’s not some cookie-cutter starlet, jacking herself up into some hyper-sexualized, jailbait-esque bimbo (like, say, Megan Fox). Kristen seems to have a very genuine tomboy vibe, and she seems to know her own mind, which I admire – probably because I wish I was as cool as she is when I was 19 years old.

I bring up my defense of Kristen because in this just-published interview with Entertainment Weekly, she comes across as sort of bratty. EW asked about her romance with Sparkles (Robert Pattinson), and Kristen went off:

Kristen Stewart, the 19-year-old star of the Twilight franchise, knows that she can come across as sullen and self-conscious in the public eye. But during an exclusive EW roundtable in Vancouver, Canada, where the cast was prepping for their last week of the Eclipse shoot and then the immediate onslaught of publicity for the November 20th release of New Moon, Stewart was funny, quick and outspoken in a wide-ranging conversation with co-stars Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson.

Asked about the endless rumors of her supposed off-screen romance with Pattinson, for instance, Stewart got nicely fired up.

“I probably would’ve answered it if people hadn’t made such a big deal about it,” she said. “But I’m not going to give the fiending an answer. I know that people are really funny about ‘Well, you chose to be an actor, why don’t you just f—ing give your whole life away?! Can I have your firstborn child?’”

Pattinson himself, who clearly loathes confrontation, tried to softly interject with philosophical statements about the need for an actor to hold onto his individuality.

But Stewart cut him off. “I’ve thought about this a lot,” she said. “There’s no answer that’s not going to tip you one way or the other. Think about every hypothetical situation: ‘Okay, we are. We aren’t. I’m a lesbian.’ I’m just trying to keep something,” she said. “If people started asking me if I was dating Taylor, I’d be like ‘F— off!’ I would answer the exact same way.” Without missing a beat, Pattinson looked at Lautner, promising “Me too.”

See? To some people, she would come across badly, like she‘s willfully trying to alienate fans of the Twilight series. To me, I admire that she has the balls – once again, at 19 years old – to not play the game. It is her private life – and although we all know she and Sparkles and hitting it like it’s on fire, Kristen has never confirmed or denied anything, which is fine. I also like that she’s not afraid to play the “lesbian” card, because that what a lot of the little Twihards think. They think that because she’s not some swooning romantic heroine in her real life – or some jacked up Megan Fox type – that Kristen might be (gasp) a lesbian! Whatever.

By the way, yesterday we saw the photo outtakes from Kristen and Sparkles’ Harper’s Bazaar cover story, but we missed the full interview. They’re both very funny in it, and there are some excellent quotes. Here’s the full interview, and here are some excerpts:

Sparkles on being attacked by rabid Twihards: “But at least that’s an experience, something new. If it’s just screaming — and I know this sounds so ridiculous — that gets old. But sometimes when there’s literal chaos, it’s like being in a war zone, and that’s kind of exciting. You’re just running through the crowd of people chasing after you and no one knows what’s going on.”

Kristen on who is more romantic: “I have a no-bullsh-t detector,” says Kristen, “so I’d have to say Rob is. I think romance is anything honest. As long as it’s honest, it’s so disarming.”

Sparkles & Kristen on their “bedroom scene”: “It wasn’t like we had to lie down together,” Kristen says, “but we were very reactive. We had a very responsive, palpable thing.” Robert notoriously took half a Valium beforehand. “I was calm and collected, and then we do this thing where we’re pretty much making out. I’ve since tried to do it at another audition, but it completely just collapsed.” He adds, “Kristen was very different from how I expected the girl who played Bella would be. I was kind of intimidated.”

Sparkles on Kristen: “Kristen doesn’t take any slack,” Rob says. “She sticks to her guns — and that’s difficult to do.” He also thinks she’s a better actor than he is. “I don’t really know how to act. I’m kind of guessing everything. … Even though I can conceptualize stuff, she can actually do it. I can make something so complex and then be like, That was pout 27.” He reckons she’s a better judge of character too. “She’ll decide on someone a lot quicker. She has a lot more self-esteem than I do, so she’s like, ‘You’re an idiot and I don’t want to talk to you,’ and I’m like, ‘I’m an idiot too!’ So I’ll talk to an idiot for like three days before deciding.”

Kristen on Sparkles’ athleticism: “I’m definitely claiming that one [that she‘s more athletic]. Rob can barely jump rope. I call him Flippy because when he does his stunt rehearsals, he flips around [makes a gesture like a penguin]. And, God, when he tries to run …”

See? They’re very cute together. Just don’t ask Kristen if they’re dating. She’ll cut you. Sparkles probably loves that she’s like that. She probably dominates the hell out of him in bed, and everywhere else. And I f-cking love that he had to take a Valium before he filmed a scene with her in a bedroom. That’s still cracking me up. Swoon!
