PETA-advocate Dominique Swain dumped her puppies in a shelter

30th Annual The Gift Of Life Celebration - Arrivals

Okay, I had to read this Fox News Pop Tarts story a few times to get the gist of why Dominique Swain should be bashed. First of all, for those who don’t know who Dominique Swain is, she was the “Lolita” in the 1997 Jeremy Irons remake, filming it back when she was either 15 or 16 years old. Since Lolita, she’s been a string of forgettable films, and she once dated Chris Masterson (the oldest brother on Malcolm in the Middle). I seem to remember that she might have dated Dave Matthews at one point, or maybe they’re just friends – I really can’t find out one way or the other.

Anyway, Dominique was a PETA spokesperson a few years ago and she participated in an ad with the slogan “Kindness is a Class Act”. Unfortunately for all, Dominique seems to be just another dumb hypocrite when it comes to animal rights. Pop Tarts reports that Dominique dumped a litter of puppies off at an animal shelter. The puppies didn’t have any of their shots, and when the animal shelter people asked her for a “donation”, Swain was all “I ain’t got no money” and then drove off in her BMW. Now PETA is all “we barely know the bitch” and “that’s so wrong, y’all”.

It sounds like “Alpha Dog” starlet and PETA spokeswoman Dominique Swain needs a refresher course on how to treat animals.

Pop Tarts spies spotted the 29-year-old actress at an animal shelter in Malibu over the weekend, accompanied by her father and a box of eight-week-old, half cocker spaniel puppies that her dog had.

“She was really strung out and just wanted to dump the puppies there, they had never even been to a vet,” an eyewitness tells Tarts. “She was told that it was crucial that they had their shots at four and eight weeks, and they had to be kept away from the other shelter dogs.”

According to the witness, the shelter volunteers asked if Swain could make a donation so the required vaccinations could be performed, otherwise the volunteers at the non profit shelter would have to pay for them.

“She said she had no money, despite [driving in] in her BMW,” the eyewitness said. “She was really rude. Eventually she said she would make a small donation, but just left the pups there and drove off.”

It sounds like Swain may have forgotten the words she uttered in PETA’s “I’d Rather Go Naked Then Wear Fur” campaign under the slogan “Kindness is a Class Act.”

“Cruelty to animals is wrong,” Swain said. “If all I have to do is stand in front of a blackboard naked to make people think about the cruelty that animals go through to make a fur coat, I’m perfectly willing. I’m baring my skin to save animals’ skins!”

A spokesman for PETA was not impressed with the actress’s actions.

“We’ve not worked with Dominique in years and there’s no excuse for her allowing her dog to breed in a city that is overflowing with homeless animals literally dying for good homes,” said the rep. “There are free and low-cost spay-and-neuter services available all over LA. It is up to all animal guardians to fix their cats and dogs. If people don’t have the resources to pay for spaying or neutering, they can still find free clinics by doing the tiniest bit of research.”

A rep for Swain did not respond for comment.

[From Fox News Pop Tarts]

I like how they described her as “strung out”. I wonder if that’s her problem? A little nose candy, a little meth. Eh…anyway, I wonder why PETA made a statement about how the mama dog wasn’t spayed, while not even talking about the whole “rich bitch should pay for her dogs to get their shots” thing. Because not paying for the shots bothers me a lot more than the not spaying your dog thing. My dog isn’t neutered (his balls give him so much pleasure!) – and I don’t think that makes me a horrible person. Of course, he doesn’t have access to any un-spayed girl dogs. But I will pay for my dog’s shots!

Another pain in the arse who shouldnt be allowed to keep an animal.
if you dont want to fix you dog or cat then you are responsible for to keep them confined when they are on heat.
I pity the mother dog who is no doubt forgotten about for days at a time while this moron is getting high.

    dearie my.. methface, anyone?

  3. Nicole says:

Hello!! I have to say, I am MORE bothered by her not having her dog spayed..and u should also be ashamed. Ppl who do not hv their dogs nuetered/spayed are the reasons there are THOUSANDS of dogs in shelters around the world. Be a little more responsible and send out the right message!!!!

  4. Firestarter says:

*Steps on soap box, clears throat*

    Hmmmm…..

Stories like this INFURITATE me. Here is why:

I am not what I would consider poor, but I certainly am not movie star status wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. I live in a rural area where there is no regard for animals at all. You would think that folks in the country would value animals as they are surrounded by nature, but NOOOOOOO. They hate animals. They go out of their way to hit dogs, cats, turtles, skunks etc on the roads. It is a lovely rural pastime!

Anyway, since moving here a number of years ago, I have taken in every stray thjat has made it’s way to my door step via it’s own 4 legs or dropped off by some ignorant asshole who knows my reputation as a sap! Currently, I have 8 cats and two dogs. All of whom I rescued. They have the best medical care, food and home. I have a large home and 12 acres that they can run around on. They have all been SPAYED AND NEUTERED the minute they are old anough. My vet bill, annually, for their routine shots runs $1,200. That does not include Frontline, food or 911 situations.

Yesterday, my Samoyed mix brought a kitten home. The last thing I needed with the brood I have. What did I do? Brought her in, put her in my bathroom (quarantine) and made her a bed, gave her food and cleaned her up. Friday she has an appt. for her shots and will be tested for Feline Leuk and Aids. Can I really afford this at the moment? No. Will I end up keeping her? If I cannot adopt her out, of course. Does it piss me the eff off to read a story like this about a woman who can afford to spay her dog? Yes! Does it piss me off that she left them? No, as it is better to have left them than to have dropped them off on the side of the road or in a plastic bag in a pond (a hoosier favorite as a way to get rid of puppies

Could the dumb bitch have left money? YES! She is probably spending that money on drugs/alcohol and partying, but cannot help out a shelter?.

I hate animal abusers and irresponsible pet owners. I am the one who ends up having to take care of cast offs because people cannot spend a few dollars ONE time to spay and neuter.

*steps down off of soap box*

P.S- I love my pets DEARLY, and would not change a thing. I even love the new addition to my home, but beg the man upstairs to PLEASE not send me anymore needy animals! I am at max! Beyond maxed out on furry friends!

  5. Laura says:

At least you keep your dog in, but don’t forget that neutering can also improve his general health!

  6. Juice In LA says:

Here Here, Firestarter. Step on that soap box anytime.

  7. Icecat says:

Thanks for all you do Firestarter. I personally appreciate it. I do what I can when I can, but being poor and working 50hrs a week it isn’t much. I donate when there is an animal in need. It’s a bad situation out there and most of the general population have no effen clue do they?

  8. Sakota says:

Excellent post Firestarter. A perfect example of celebrity hypocrisy.

  9. wow says:

If she can’t take care of the puppies or just chooses not to do so, I have no problem with her turning them in to an animals shelter as oppose to just letting them roam around and fend for themselves. There are people out there who have dogs just for the “cute” factor but don’t take care of their needs. I’d rather the dogs be returned to the shelter so that at the very least they can have the chance that someone loving to adopt them and take care of them properly.

Sorry, I just can’t hate on this girl for turning them over when she knows she isn’t responsible enough to take care of them.

However this behaviour, IMO, is reason enough that people should have licenses in order to have an animal. Not just anybody should be a pet owner. There should be some rules in place just as they have for when people want to adopt children.

  10. Oh My says:

meh just another example of a PETA supporter being irresponsible and clueless

  11. Praise St. Angie! says:

Firestarter, I am SOOOOO not surprised that you’re an animal lover/rescuer.

    you rock, girl…keep it up!

  12. Shannon says:

Neutering your dog won’t do anything to impede his enjoyment of his balls. Trust me, my neutered dog is a chronic masturbator and will hump anything that moves (other male dogs, cats, peoples’ legs..). Just think of it as a vasectomy, because that’s more or less what it is.

This woman is horrible. Not for being a hypocrite, but for mistreating those poor puppies. She should sell that stupid BMW if she’s so hard up on cash, dumb b****.

  13. Alecto says:

    wow! 29? really? geez

  14. Fire says:

You can’t tell me with the number of movies IMDB says she has made since Lolita and the 5 recent ones in various stages of production due out that she can’t afford to make a donation to at least cover the cost of vaccinations! I’m not going to get into an argument about neutering/spaying (I think it should be done, but am not going to bash people that don’t do it but are responsible about keeping their animals indoors), but once she allowed her dog to get pregnant – those puppies are HER responsibility! It’s ok to me that she had the forethought to realize she couldn’t take care of them and wanted to drop them at a shelter, even though she should have tried to find them homes herself. (Maybe she did – doesn’t sound like it.) She should have paid for the shots AT THE VERY LEAST. It does make you think that the little jab looking “really strung out” could possibly have some validity.

And all this is not even taking into account that she was once a spokesperson for PETA. But, well, look at another of their choices – good ole Pammie….

  15. Firestarter says:

I do not have a problem with her turning the puppies in, but I do have a problem with her dog not having been spayed. As a pet owner, you know that in order to keep your pet from reproducing you HAVE TO HAVE THEM SPAYED/NEUTERED. If you cannot do that, don’t have a pet, period. It is not only for population control but for the pets own health as well.

You cannot tell me for one minute that I have more money than this actress does. I will never believe it. If you cannot afford a pet, fine, I can understand that. The ASPCA and Humane Societies are over loaded these days due to the economy and people struggling to feed even themselves, let alone their pets. To own a dog, not spay it and then carelessly let it roam around to where it gets pregnant , IMO, INEXCUSABLE. Also, to drive off in a BMW that gas alone cost money to run but not leave even $5,$10, $15 or $20 is reprehensible. To a shelter, even $5 means a lot, I know, as in 2004 I volunteered my time to a shelter several times a month until the shelter was absorbed into another one further away from me. Every donation, big or small is not only helpful but appreciated. Even donations of food, old towels, bedding, newspapers, medications you no longer use, shampoos, litter boxes, anything , is helpful. If she had even took in a bag of Puppy Chow or old bedding she wasn’ty using, it is better than nothing at all.

Animals, like children, cannot protect themselves, and that is why I am so passionate about the two. I hate abuse of anyone or anything, and I hate people who have pets or children because they think they are cute as accessories, when they are major committments. I have to plan three months in advance to travel to visit my family in California. I travel once a year, compared to every week when I was a clothing rep. I have changed my life because I took on the responsibility of all these animals and I live my life now, according to what is best for them. Just like kids, they depend on you and sacrifices have to be made.

Okay, I am done preaching. See what fires me up!LOL!

  16. Teri says:

People who would treat animals like this have a straight line ticket to hell. Bring the sunscreen, Dominique!!

    Firestarter, you’re an angel!

  17. pickelhaube says:

This sh*t INFURIATES me, especially since I just had to put my beloved 4 year old Boxer to sleep because she was dying of a brain tumor. I would have done ANYTHING to save her life (nothing could be done), and to see people just toss their pets in a shelter like they are garbage is disgusting and irresponsible.

If you decide to get a pet, you need to realize that it is a lifelong committment. You wouldn’t just dump your kid because it becomes too hard to handle, so why the hell is it acceptable to get rid of a pet? This b*tch is disgusting and I will never support her in any way now that I know she’s a f*cking hypocrite. Sickening. I would do anything to have my dog back, and this b*tch just dumps hers like they’re garbage? Horrible.

  18. Firestarter says:

    Oh and another thing:

Most shelters, epecially the Humane Society, do offer spaying/neutering and shots to those that cannot otherwise afford it. They do hope you can pay their nominal fees for the service, but will provide it if you cannot pay. You just have to show your inabilty to pay.

Also, most vets will try to work a method of payment if you ask them. The key is just asking and not being ashamed to let them know times are difficult. I have a FANTASTIC vet who allows me to have an acct that I can pay on monthly, in addition to him offering me a 20% discount on my visit if I bring in two or more pets at a time. I also benefit from him providing me with free samples of medications I use frequently, for ear infections or ear mites. You simply have to find a great vet who provides wonderful care and who LOVES animals, not just the money.

Thnaks for the kind words all! I try to make up for being a bitch by being good to animals and kids! : )

Pickel- (((hugs)) Sorry for your loss. I lost my eldest cat (he was 18) last year. I still cry about it! My Samoyed had a terrible accident in 2003 and ended up having to have his front leg amputated, and I told the doctor I would spend whatever it took if we could save his leg, but there was no way. My parents were even wanting me to look into a prostetic limb for him (they have them for animals) but my guy is great with just the three and my vet said that he would hate a prostetic limb. He is very active and people are amazed when they see him run at how fast he is, and how unaffected he is by the loss.

  19. lucy2 says:

I am glad she at least brought them to a shelter (unlike the people who just dump them by the side of the road – my family has found homes for a number of abandoned cats over the years because of that sort of thing). But it is terrible that if she did not want the responsibility of puppies, she did not have her pet fixed or kept away from other dogs. It’s also disgusting that she couldn’t be bothered to make a donation either. I hate irresponsible idiots like this, and I hope this story makes the rounds and she is embarrassed into making a nice donation, at the very least. But she probably won’t even notice because yeah, she does look strung out or something. Scum.

  20. Katyusha says:

@Kaiser, you may not care to look into this, but it’s generally known that when animals are not spayed/nuetered (and they’re not being bred), it can cause a decline in their health. It leads to problems in their reproductive organs. I had to put my first dog down when he was 8 years old because he got prostate cancer when we didn’t fix him. I’m no vet, but any vet can tell you this.

    @Firestarter
I am also a taker-in of stray animals (I can’t help it.) I now take care of 2 stray cats, but the first thing I did when I found them was take them to the vet to make sure they were fixed. I feel so much better about it.
    Yes, I want a cookie 🙂

  21. Firestarter says:

Katyusha- You deserve a cookie, hug and anything you wish. It is nice when there are people that actually care about helping animals.

  22. Julia says:

    Get your dog neutered.

Intact male dogs frequently wind up with a host of problems from testicular tumors to anal tumors and frequently must be neutered at a time when it is less comfortable for them (in conjunction with removal of a perianal tumor, for example).

Only part of the purpose of spaying and neutering is population control. It’s just better for their overall health.

Female dogs who have not been spayed are at much higher risk for mammary tumors/cancer and can develop uterine infections (pyometra) that require emergency surgery.

The belief that animals will lose out on some sense of self as a result of being fixed is an antiquated and overly-anthropomorphic mind-set, and one that results avoidable illness and injury.

    /rant off

  23. crash2GO2 says:

Count me in as one of the animal lovers here. This story upsets me. I applaud all of you who spend your time and money helping needy animals – just please be sure you don’t over extend yourselves! 🙁 At least she did take them to the pound instead of tossing them into the river. Bleh

Neutering your dog is a lot different from a vasectomy though, since they still get the testosterone produced by the testes in a vasc. In a neuter, they just yank the testes out – no more test. production.

Dogs do NOT miss their testes. They may miss the hormones, as far as health goes, however. Of course they aren’t going to get cancer in organs that aren’t there anymore. I think spaying and neutering is generally a great idea, but I accept that there are responsible owners who can keep an unaltered animal.

  24. snowball says:

    Yay Firestarter and Katyusha!

I’m only mom to one cat, but I love her to pieces and am going to be one sorry sight when she leaves. She’s an expensive cat – she’s all white (green eyes, the blue ones are deaf, I think?) and allergic to plaque, so I spend about $500 a year just on dental cleanings.

I cry and feel like a crappy pet mom when her claws get too long. She’s totally my baby now that my son’s off to college next year. I just can’t comprehend someone having such a blatant disregard for basic care – or a donation – for that litter. Yeah, she could have dumped them by the side of the road or tossed them in a river, but that’s not even the point.

Argh, now I’m gonna go brush my cat and cry. I can’t even watch those pet rescue shows on Animal Planet because when I see those sweet little faces I want to rescue them all.

  25. GatsbyGal says:

Firestarter, you’re the real deal, I wish more people were like you in the world.

Also Kaiser, shame for not snipping your dog. What if he ever (god forbid) got loose from your home and then made the beast with two backs with every stray lady he could find? I know you say he doesn’t have access to female dogs to mate with, but he would if he ever ran away.

  26. Firestarter says:

@Snowball- OMG! I know!I cannot watch those shows either. I am not kidding when I say this, but when the Sarah McLaughlin ASPCA ad comes on tv, I cry! When I volunteered at the animal shelter, I literally cried every single day after I volunteered because I hated that so many darling cats and dogs had no one to love them and care for them. It is particularly difficult in the rural areas of the US to get people to adopt animals, because most of the people are the ones dumping them at the shelters. The one good thing was that it was a no kill shelter, so I could rest easy knowing that they would be cared for and not be killed.

Also, you are not a bad cat mom. I know how you feel though, I have to do alternate days for brushing, nail clippings, (though the trees outside lend me a hand!) and playtime. I feel guilty if I skip even one day of any of the grooming chores!

Thanks Gatsby Gal, I am not a saint, but I do love, love ,love animals and animals are never turned away from my home. Several years back, someone dropped a litter of German Shephard mix pups on a piece of property we owned and ran a resort out of. I paid 2 of the guys who worked for us an additional $5 per pup (there were 5) to bathe them and take the ticks off of them. I went to the store, bought a bag of puppy chow for each pup, bowls and collars. Placed a sign on the door of our office “free pups to good home.” I interviewed everyone that wanted to take one home (we had a canoeing/camp ground business) and by the end of the weekend, all the puppies had homes, and I even saw a couple of the pups after they were adopted, as their adoptive parents were frequent customers of our resort and would bring the dogs to visit. The only reason I was able to place them in homes was because we had customers from the city who wanted them. If I had not had that business at the time, I never would have found homes for them in all likelihood.

A little piece of trivia, we closed our resort back in 1997 because none of us in the family could stand dealing with the public any longer. We love animals, but people, sometimes, not so much!

If anyone has any ideas for a name for my new kitten, I would love to hear them. She is gray, sweet with yellow eyes. I have hit a wall with clever names and would love suggestions!

  27. WTF?!? says:

I had my new kitteh spayed yesterday.

  28. Katyusha says:

Firestarter, I know people have a way with naming their pets, but I give mine human names. And it’s not because I think of them as being human, but names like “Blacky” and “Ashes” are lame to me.

The two cats I have are Masha and Shawna 🙂

  29. Firestarter says:

Katyusha- Haha! I do think of my pets as humans~! They act more civilized than some people I have come to know.

I have some with people names and some with other types of names. No Blacky or Ashes! LOL!

    YAY WTF?!

  30. Judy says:

Firestarter: You are a good person and a woman after my own heart. I can’t add anything to what you already said–it was said perfectly. Two of my three dogs are rescues and if I had the money and the property, I would rescue every stray dog and cat possible. Thank you for being such a compassionate human being.

  31. pickelhaube says:

    Katyusha-

Me too! I name them after historical figures…my first dog was named Winston Churchill, and my Boxer was Tsarina Alixandra. I love human names for animals! I always thought I was weird, so I’m glad to know I’m not alone.

    Firestarter-

You are awesome. I always enjoy your posts, and now I will even more knowing that you are so dedicated to animals. Thank you for all you do…we need more people like you!

  32. Firestarter says:

@Judy- Thank you for the compliment. It means a lot. Like I said, I am far from perfect, but I do care deeply for my pets. I am maxed out on pets right now. I had a cat pass away a year ago, so I do have one a slot open for this newest kitten, but cannot see myself taking on much more right now. I want to be able to care for my pets in a manner which they deserve, attention wise, and with quality of care.

I am very lucky to have the place that I do. It has been in the family for over 50 yrs, and for 50 yrs my family has welcomed any stray. I learned all of this compassion for animals from my grandmother who loved animals more than anything. She nursed many kittens, puppies and wild animals in her life time, including a chipmunk she saved from a cat named Frisky, who was her companion for 2 yrs until decided he needed a girlfriend. My mother also is a lover of animals, so it is in my blood.

I am so glad there are people like you as well, who take in the helpless animals out there and give them loving homes. Every pet should be so lucky as to have you too Judy! : )

  33. Bete says:

PETA needs to wake up and realise that most of their celebrity spokespeople are hypocrites.

  34. TwinkleToes says:

Overloaded with the strays myself. Sounds like this girl has a drug or alchie problem, maybe both. Peta is dumb and isolates true animal lovers.

  35. TwinkleToes says:

P.S.- this chick has big man face which may explain her lackluster career. Time to put down the pipe and pick up a book.

  36. ccoop says:

They’re not only hypocrites, but they are stepping on the backs of animals to further their careers. “Ooh, doing a PETA ad will be so good for my image!”

Kudos to all the pet lovers and guardians here.

  37. Carena says:

Firestarter, I knew you were from Indiana before you even said the word Hoosier. You are right, it is ridiculous how animals are treated in rural areas of our state. 🙁

I have 5 that I adopted from the Humane Society (3 cats, 2 dogs). All but 1 was abused and neglected in their prior homes. It’s a shame how people treat animals.

  38. meglet says:

:O I have a 6 month english cocker spaniel (blue roan) and she is gorgeous! Just had her spayed, as we did with our last cocker. I just had to google a cocker cross because I couldn’t imagine what these puppies would of looked like. This woman sounds like a complete fool, not sure how shelters etc work in America, but in Aus those puppies would be adopted straight away. I can’t believe she didn’t care for them at all though, they would of been gorgeous 🙁 poor little pups..

  39. Firestarter says:

@Pickel- Thnak you! I enjoy your posts as well!

@Carena- Actually I live in Missouri, but I use the word hoosier quite often because I love the word! Indiana Hoosiers are way better than Missouri hoosiers!

I hate to hear that people treat animals that way there too, but I am sad to say that it is a very common problem in all states.

Thank you for adopting from the Humane Society! That is 5 precious, furry creatures who now have a home! I am so glad there are people out there like all of us on this thread who care about animals and can play some minor role in giving them happy lives.

    I really loved this thread!

By the way, the kitten is great. I cannot wait for her to get a clean bill of health so she can be with me and my other pets. The dogs LOVE her and as little as she is, she is crazy about them. Keep your fingers crossed that she gets the OK to be with the rest of her new family!

  40. Meimei says:

“Neutering your dog won’t do anything to impede his enjoyment of his balls. Trust me, my neutered dog is a chronic masturbator and will hump anything that moves (other male dogs, cats, peoples’ legs..).”

Mine doesn’t hump – apparently he just didn’t learn it before he was neutered (I’m not the least bit sorry about that! 😀 ), but another neutered male has been more into humping after his operation. So, the lack of balls certainly doesn’t bother either one of them. As an added bonus, they both get to enjoy the wonderful smells of females in heat close up; no balls means more fun, actually.

Also, female dogs are more susceptible to infections after giving birth (dilated cervix and all that), so even if the birth itself is easy, giving birth is potentially dangerous. Why risk your pets life for something unwanted?

  41. classicalangel says:

Count me in on the hoosier stray saving parade. Up to six cats and two dogs…possibly three this week to save another puppy. I don’t know any animal lovers who really like PETA, interestingly enough, I wonder if everyone else feels that way? Anyway, stories like this make me sick. Animals are a responsibility, as are any other animals that are produced by that animal. If you aren’t willing to commit to a pet for ten+ years, don’t get one.

  42. Katyusha says:

    @pickelhaube

My dog that I mentioned before (that I had to put down) was named Rommel 🙂

  43. Codzilla says:

pickelhaube: One of my dogs is named Spencer, which is Winston Churchill’s middle name. I wanted to name him Larry, but my Dad insisted on a more “dignified” moniker, so he suggested Spencer in honor of Sir Winston (one of his heroes). The irony is that Spencer (the dog) is the biggest dork on earth, so Larry would have probably been more fitting, LOL.

OK, I suppose I should contribute to the critter count here: I have two dogs, three cats, three horses, and one miniature donkey. All are rescues, save for one of the horses and the donkey, although I picked up the latter for a discounted price on the grounds that I never breed her (too bad, because she’s a fine genetic specimen).

High fives to all the animal lovers on this thread!

  44. Orangejulius says:

Ditto on the high-fives to the animal lovers. I volunteer at a shelter and foster abandoned kittens. I sometimes have 5 critters on my lap all snuggled up. I completely agree with you, Firestarter, that I have more problems with people than I do with animals!

Oh, and that idiotic woman needs help learning how to dress. That hat with that dress? Completely ridiculous looking.

  45. julie says:

    first of all….who?

    whatever.
what a sad, sad, sad BITCH!

    wait…who is this?
let me know when Lindsey Lohan throws kittens out of an Escalade, now that would be news worthy!

  46. paul says:

Dominique Swain si very very beautiful and sexy 😛
