Penelope Cruz was on The Late Show last night to promote her new film Broken Embraces (review here). I thought she might be on for Nine, but alas, she was not. Anyway, David Letterman was very nice to her at first, asking her about winning her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, and she says she doesn’t remember part of the night, but she remembers sitting in her seat and trying not to have a panic attack. I’m watching part of the interview now… and I have to say something. I actually really, really like Penelope, I think she’s a wonderful actress, but her accent is terribly annoying isn’t it? David even asks her about her accent and being a Spanish actress, and she says she speaks a ton of languages, so God bless. I’m just finding her kind of grating. And I like accents! I love most accents, but hers plucks my last nerve. Argh.
Anyway, David brought the conversation around to her relationship with Javier Bardem. Last month, Penelpe was flashing a big sapphire and diamond ring, and the rumor was that it was an engagement ring. But when David asked about it, Penelope avoided the questions like a champ:
Ever since Penélope Cruz wore a sapphire-and-diamond sparkler on her ring finger at the October premiere of Broken Embraces, buzz has mounted that the actress is engaged to actor Javier Bardem.
It’s a question she just won’t answer – no matter how hard she’s pushed. During her Late Show appearance, airing Tuesday night, David Letterman asked the actress, 35, point-blank if she’s engaged to Bardem, 40. “I don’t feel comfortable talking about my private life in public,” she said, laughing.
Letterman pressed and Cruz continued, “I’ve been here a few times with you, you know I’m tough. One thing I don’t do, I don’t lie about my personal life,” she said. “It’s sacred to me. It’s my life. But I don’t give details about it because I am allergic to that.”
Relentless, Letterman finally asked, “So you know, but you don’t want to tell me?” Responded Cruz, giggling, “I know, but I choose not to share some things!”

I think she did well with those questions. In the past few months she’s had to deny rumors that she was pregnant, and that she and Javier were adopting from India, so I’ll give her some credit for not confirming or denying the engagement stuff. I get the feeling that her deal isn’t some publicist-driven “look at me no don’t look at me” crap.
Many are saying that Penelope will get another supporting actress Oscar nomination for Nine, where she’s playing Daniel Day-Lewis’s mistress. I think the chances are good that she could walk away with a lead actress nomination for Broken Embraces, though. I haven’t heard much about the film, but the Academy seems to love her in Pedro Almodovar’s films. In any case, I wish Penelope luck – who knows, if she gets nominated for some stuff, maybe she’ll walk the red carpet with Javier.

Poor Penelope, she didn’t just hate that question about Javier, she hated the whole interview and having to be there from the start. Look at her body language, she’s facing as away from him as she politely can. She is upright, almost rigid, the crossed legs seem forced and she has a stance that makes you think she’s, in her mind, sitting there with a wire around her chest and some clamp on her finger. Her manner of speaking is also reserved, serious and almost cool. She passes over the jokes Letterman is trying to lob at her and only laughs when not doing so would be rude. No wonder she got really pissed off when he started asking about Javier.
She and RPatz are fierce when it comes to questions about their private lives. RPatz walked out on Seacrest the other night when asked about KStew.
Kstew needs to take some lessons from Penelope on this. They both basically said the same thing in regard to their private life, but Penelope comes off sounding way more better and non-bitchy, unlike Kstew.
Good job. That’s how it’s done. This is how you tell the public that it’s none of their business in a classy way. Love it.
I’ve always thought she was classy about her private life. I appreciate people not spewing everything out for all the world to see. A little mystery is not a bad thing.
Now. those shoes. They make her feet look HUGE on little stick legs! LOL
@Wow- Could it be that Stewart is 19 and Cruz is 35 and has a several years of experience in dealing with the media and their questions ?
rzrlvr, ITA on the shoes!
I know Louboutin is “in” right now, but those 6″ platform heel things are awful-looking. Christina Aguilera wears them all the time, but she really is a midgety thing.
Does anyone really need heels that high other than strippers and hookers?
I hate those shoes!! It’s worse than Chinese foot binding!
what a hot couple!
I used to love Penelope Cruz and Pedro Almodovar, but it really made me sad to learn that both signed the Roman Polanski petition to free him, so I find myself turning away from things about them…
Her accent’s genuine, so I like it.
she hurts my ears slightly more than she hurts my eyes.
wtf is she saying?
Maturity showing, as Firestarter stated. And Kaiser, I have to agree with you, I adore her but do not want to hear her speak. And I’m an absolute SUCKER for accents, usually. I loved her when she gave her Oscar acceptance speech though.
Too bad a sex tape with her and Bardem (aye!) will never be “leaked”. I’ll risk sounding creepy and say I’d be all over that. Why is always the f*king Limp Bizkit and Creed dudes?
I always though I was the only one that get annoyed with her accent.
@Trillion – well,it’s not exactly a sex tape, but did you ever see the movie ‘Jamon Jamon’ that Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem made together in 1992? I think it was her first movie. It’s kind of a dark comedy – but there’s some VERY steamy scenes between them in it!
now I’m sounding creepy 🙂 but it was hot!
