Hayden Panettiere was septic, had liver failure: ‘my eyes were yellow’

Hayden Panettiere seems to be slowly easing back into Hollywood and her career after being away from several years due to personal struggles. She started doing interviews where she opened up about her sobriety journey and giving up custody of her daughter. She also reprised her role in Scream VI, which was released in March, but had to step back from the press tour due to the sudden death of her younger brother. This interview with The New York Times seems like it was originally meant to be part of the Scream promo, but it was rescheduled after Hayden’s personal tragedy. She talks more about her struggles with alcohol and the current state of her relationship with Brian Hickerson.

The demand of her career took its toll. “When I went home after acting out what I was really going through, the last thing I wanted to do was properly manage or talk about what I was feeling in a healthy way,” she said. “So I turned to unhealthy coping mechanisms.”

That meant cocktails with friends and hiding under the covers and pouring herself a drink almost every day. Her life, she said, could be summed up by the adage “Idle hands are the devil’s workshop.”

In some ways, Ms. Panettiere said, her tumultuous behavior stemmed from the time she lost in growing up as a child actor. “I wanted that control back,” she said. “I wanted to do things I wasn’t supposed to do, and I wanted to just let go and act like a kid.”

Ms. Panettiere said that at some point she couldn’t recognize herself in the mirror anymore. “My eyes were yellow,” she said, adding that doctors told her that her liver was failing and she was septic. She was 27 at the time and would wake up shaking, needing an entire bottle of alcohol to get through the day. She would often swap in opioids to stave off drinking alcohol, she said.

In 2021, Ms. Panettiere re-entered a treatment center for eight months. She has been sober for almost two years, now swapping substances for Peloton rides and organic meals, and has deleted most of the photos from her time deep in addiction, except for one.
Why? “To remind myself what I looked like,” she said. “The fact that I thought I looked OK at that time is the scariest part to me.”

At the height of her addiction, she dated Brian Hickerson on and off for about four years. In 2021, he pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring the actress and served time in jail. Mr. Hickerson was in the condo during our interview, walking around, vacuuming and shooting a basketball through the hoop in her living area.

Both Ms. Panettiere and Mr. Hickerson became sober and later reconnected as friends. During the photo shoot, Ms. Panettiere called him “babe” a handful of times. When asked if they were dating again, she was hesitant to define their relationship, but said, “There are feelings there, yes.”

She added that she doesn’t condone what he did. “He knows he deserved what happened to him,” Ms. Panettiere said, referring to his arrest and jail time. She noted that their relationship was “contingent on him continuing on this road of recovery,” and she is self-conscious about how people may perceive her letting him back into her life. “I did not do any of this lightly,” she said.

[From The New York Times]

Hayden alluded to the toll alcohol took on her liver in her Women’s Health interview, but this interview was the first time she plainly confirms how much she was drinking. She was septic and in liver failure due to alcohol. Thankfully, she was able to get healthy and come back from that and seems to now be in a much better place health wise. But what’s more concerning is the extent to which Brian Hickerson is still in her life. There were multiple abusive incidents throughout their relationship, he pleaded no contest to two felony counts for hurting her, and he was in jail. Last summer, she said she was single, but they were friends, but they’ve been in this cycle for years. And the NYT’s description of him wandering in and out of the interview seems a bit ominous. Abusers don’t just stop abusing because they get sober; there are plenty of teetotaler abusers. I really hope how Hayden’s presenting it is how it actually is, and that she’s okay.

To be septic means she had sepsis? I thought that was a blood infection and had no idea that could be caused by alcohol! Yikes! As for Brian, girl run! You don’t need that kind of toxicity in your life, especially as you’re newly sober.

    • aimee says:

it’s different. they can be related but what most likely happened is she went into liver failure first as an alcoholic and then had an infection or she went into shock from liver failure and they called it sepsis. either way, she’s lucky to be alive bc liver failure is super dangerous.

      • May Bench says:

I don’t understand how or why people drink themselves into this sickness and damage to their bodies. I guess it’s addiction. Glad she conquered her demons.

    • Celebitchy says:

This was my error as I retitled the story for Peridot. I will change it to “septic” as that’s what the article said.

    • Lola09 says:

Alcoholism is a horrible condition and I think because alcohol is such an inherently addictive substance and available everywhere that (almost) anyone has the capacity to become first psychologically and then also physically dependent, given the ‘right’ circumstances. Just takes a bit of poor mental health, life trauma etc and it doesn’t discriminate. I didn’t even drink much until I got to about 32….7 years later it’s escalated to life threatening either to continue OR to stop. Anyway I really appreciate her honesty about the depths she went to, I hope she really is doing well now but it’s a lifetime struggle.

      • SquiddusMaximus says:

Congrats on your recovery, Lola — and I 100% agree! I was never inclined to drink much, until at ~37 the right cocktail (haha!) of trauma, isolation, lingering psychological conditions, blah blah blah turned me into a full-blown alcoholic. Life threatening, too. It was amazing how quickly it came on.

I think part of the struggling with confronting addiction is that it’s not a one-size-fits-all paradigm. My personality doesn’t fit in the conventional idea of an alcoholic, nor does my path to drinking. AA and therapy is so necessary for people to truly understand what insanity this disease is.

Anyhoo, 2+ years in, I don’t miss it a drop (ahHA!), my life has never been better, and I so appreciate open stories like this.

Being this honest is so fecking brave, so major hugs to Hayden. No one in my life knows exactly how bad it was medically for me(though my husband probably suspects), so I can appreciate the sheer amount of strength it takes to talk about it to a larger public.

Wandering around during the interview sounds like he’s making a point. I wish her well in living healthily and getting all toxic influences out of her life.

    • MrsCope says:

Yup. That makes me sad for her.

    • BeanieBean says:

Yeah, that gave me shivers. That’s creepy & he knows it–‘better not say anything bad about me’. It’s all about control.

      • Gelya says:

He was playing basketball in the living room during the interview? That gave me shivers. She is never going to be healthy until she breaks ties with him. I know it is a process. Poor baby girl. I worry for her. I always had a soft spot for her since the first time she played Lizzy on Guiding Light. Even then she seemed lost. You could really see it in Heroes.

  3. MrsCope says:

The Brian stuff is concerning because even when she soft re-launched their “friendship” about a year ago, she ended up being with him when he got into a fistfight outside a club. There is video of her getting knocked over trying to calm him down. Him making sure the writer and everyone knew he is in her life is an abuser/controller move. None of those activities had to happen while she was working (being interviewed). I’m praying for her continued recovery.

    • Farah says:

100 in everything you said.I really hope that she is in a better place… Hollywood is really a fucked up place when you are a child actor .

  4. Digital Unicorn says:

She needs to cut that guy out of her life – if he’s there during the interview its because he’s monitoring what she’s saying and letting it be known that he’s there and in control. He clearly still has influence over her and she can’t see it. He’s probably leeching financially of her as well as he was doing before.

    • Mia4s says:

“He’s probably leeching financially of her as well as he was doing before.”

Given that I believe he’s stated his occupation as “actor” (…..riiiiggt) I’d say that’s a safe bet.

Very sad to hear she still has him in her life. That is not optimistic for the future at all. And certainly damages if not destroys any chance she might have had of solo visits from her daughter. Just sad all around.

  5. ML says:

I’m really glad Wladimir has custody of their daughter—a while back Hayden was complaining about that. It’s great that she’s on her sober journey and has gotten healthier. However, no way that a known abuser should be anywhere near her if she wants custody of her daughter. She seems somewhat aware of how having Brian in her life looks, but doesn’t seem to understand why that’s a problem. And it sounds as though the interviewer was uneasy about Brian’s presence during the interview and didn’t feel totally safe.

    • Mia4s says:

“And it sounds as though the interviewer was uneasy….”

This exactly. The interviewer said a lot without saying it. Why exactly was he there during the interview? Does he live there? Let’s be generous and say he’s a roommate only…..whose roommate wanders around and makes themselves noticeable while you are in an important meeting? You couldn’t go for a walk? Go see a movie. Weather’s bad? OK, go watch TV in another room, read a book.

I get exactly what the interviewer was saying and it makes me sad.

      • Sue Denim says:

he also wasn’t just wandering around — vacuuming and shooting hoops are noisy, intrusive and would prob feel hostile to a visitor…

      • ScorpioMoon says:

I think the interviewer was smart to note his presence and include it in the article. Something tells me that Hayden’s handlers are none too pleased about it, because it more or less does blow her comeback story up all to smithereens. I’ll take it one step further and suggest that this is the reason this interview got shelved for so long; they probably figured this dude’s presence and Hayden’s addiction would dominate the reporting on this and no one involved with Scream 6 wanted that to overtake or be connected with the film’s publicity.

It’s also possible the interviewer was feeling equally uncomfortable about it, knows his presence is a red flag/etc. because he’s an abuser, and/or maybe was just looking for the scoop. Either way, I’m glad they noted it, because it suggests he controls a lot about her life. It’s not a good omen for Hayden’s future career prospects that she’s still attached to this guy who has been convicted of beating her; it’s tough to sell a comeback story when a dude like that is still in the picture.

      • Kitten says:

YES. The interviewer was subtly pointing out the red flags. I worry for Hayden so much,,,she’s come so far in terms of recognizing and managing her addiction (you never really “overcome” it) but she still hasn’t worked through her issues with men. I’m going to try to stay positive and hope that Brian’s abusiveness is tied to his alcoholism but honestly, who knows. I just want the best for Hayden.

  6. LooneyTunes says:

She is still not well. She may be “sober”, but hasn’t removed the triggers from her life that drove her to addiction and making bad choices.

  7. ScorpioMoon says:

Hayden gives me Dana Plato vibes at this point. Wish her all the best I guess, because it does sound like a lot of what she’s gone through since 2014 or so is connected to postpartum stuff (which likely kicked up other old demons she had too, hence self-medicating with alcohol and opioids).

But also, she’s a famous actress—she has the means and resources to get the help she needs, so my sympathy is limited. Sounds like she chose the violent boyfriend over her daughter and still is; glad to hear that Wladimir still has custody, but I dunno, does he have a sketchy past himself? Either way, sounds like a bad situation and the abuser boyfriend still hovering around and interrupting her interview to make his presence known is a big red flag.

    • Kitten says:

I mean, yes she’s in a better place than many DV victims in that she has resources and wealth, but does she have the support? Also, those things shouldn’t preclude her from being worthy of sympathy. At the end of the day, DV victims follow the same patterns regardless of how wealthy they are and it’s so important for people to understand that this can happen to ANYONE, regardless of their background/circumstances.

      • blue says:

How “wealthy” is she? She hasn’t worked regularly in recent years. Rehab is expensive. So are legal fees, hers & maybe Hickerson’s. How many leeches does she support?

    • tealily says:

In my own experiences with loved ones, resources and support do not equate to sobriety and good choices. I hope she can move forward from all these and get herself to a healthier frame of mind.

  8. julia says:

It’s extremely difficult to move on from the toxic people in your life along with everything else, but man I sure hope she kicks him far, far away.

  9. Coco says:

I agree with everyone dude wandering in and out of the interview is Brian monitoring what she is saying, and making sure she stays on script. He also wants to make sure she not making him “look bad”.

I know some people didn’t see anything wrong when Hayden was dating his brother while he was in jail, but that was always a red flag. It seem like a way for him to keep track of her and make sure she stays close by and that’s exactly what happened because once he was out of jail she was back with him.

I’m glad her daughter is not around that toxic relationship and that she doesn’t have kids with him. Hopefully one day Hayden will be free of himself and his family.

  10. Bingo says:

Sounds like she has transfer addiction she drops drugs and alcohol. But is still addicted to Brian and their toxic relationship. He may just be love-bombing her now to keep her on the hook.

I think she still has a long road ahead to full recovery. She isn’t there yet. But I have hope for her. She is very talented and with the right role she could do great work again.

  11. Surly Gale says:

There’s a big difference between being sober and being dry. Being dry just means you’re not drinking. Being sober means you’re doing the mental and emotional work. It’s very, very hard work. My lover got dry a couple of times but never made it to sobriety. When push came to shove, he chose the bottle every time, until I eventually realized the pattern and refused to participate. Still the best lover, the most generous lover I ever had. It just wasn’t enough to build a life with, and wasn’t what I knew I deserved.
Hayden hasn’t gotten there yet. I hope with my whole being she does get there.

  12. Nicegirl says:

    💕

  13. Peanut Butter says:

I have a real soft spot for her and hope so much that she will be okay. I’ve long wondered to what degree unresolved trauma symptoms may be running her show, and to what extent her childhood needs went unmet. I know firsthand how much that can drive unhealthy behaviors, self-medication, etc. If that’s the case for her, I hope she’s got a great trauma therapist or will find someone who is.

  14. ohhey says:

Him being in earshot during the interview and running a vacuum to appear like he can’t hear? Huge red flag. This man is not a good person.
