Chris Evans is doing the rounds for his new film Ghosted in which he stars with Ana de Armas. I find the premise funny and like that she’s the spy and he’s the victim in distress, so I’ll check it out. Fortunately, Good Morning America knows how to promote a film properly so while interviewing Chris, they asked about his adorable pup Dodger. When they returned from break, George Stephanopoulos and Robin Roberts cut to photos of Chris and Dodger, melting everyone’s hearts, and asked CapChris to retell the story of how he and Dodger found each other. We know, of course, that Chris and Dodger locked eyes in a shelter while he was filming in Savannah. But Robin wanted to know how Dodger got his name. Chris said it was a Dickens reference… by way of Disney, of course. The pup resembled the dog who played Dodger from Oliver & Company, which was Disney’s canine take on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist.
During a recent interview, he opened up about how he named the dog, and the way that a less well-known Disney movie inspired him.
The conversation turned to how he named Dodger, and the inspiration came from Disney’s Oliver & Company, which was inspired by Charles Dickens‘ Oliver Twist.
“He was a street dog. He was a little orphan. You know, the Artful Dodger is kind of that… I wish I could just say it was a Charles Dickens reference. It’s actually a more animated reference. They did a movie – Oliver & Company – the movie I grew up on that’s based on Oliver Twist. The dog that played the Artful Dodger kind of looked like Dodger,” he explained.
Was there any doubt that Chris Evans, Disney superfan, named his pet after a Disney character? As soon as he mentioned the name, we all knew there was a Disney link. This is an A-List, in-demand actor who still takes dates to Disneyland, for Pete’s sake. Had he tried to name Dodger something outside of the Disney Universe, his speech would have slurred and spun itself back into Disney-speak. However, Dodger is also the perfect name for Chris’ dog. He does resemble the cartoon mutt. Dodger and Dickens’ Artful Dodger were from the streets, but had a protective sense to look out for Oliver. Plus, Dodger the cartoon was voiced by Billy Joel and you can’t get much cooler than that. So Disney connection or not, it s also a great name for the little guy.
I posted the clip of Chris talking about Dodger below. I love that he attempts to enter the conversation about his dog calm and collected but the minute a photo of Dodger is put on the screen, Chris falls apart. I will never not be moved by how much Chris adores that dog. Oh, and I see why Dodger’s getting his name out there, looks like he just got his first sponsorship with Jinx Dog Food. Get those Benjamins, Dodger!
@gma “Look at those eyes … cuteness overload!” ❤️🐕 Chris Evans is the sweetest dog dad. He adopted Dodger when he was working on a film in Savannah: "I rounded the corner and saw him and just knew right away." #ChrisEvans #Dogs #Adopt #Ghosted ♬ original sound – Good Morning America

Dodger! 💕
Those pics of Dodger and Chris just love them.
Dodger might be Chris’ twinflame, LOL.
Omg. Of course. How darling
I’ve adopted shelter dogs and my friends have also. Every one of them seems to have an extra load of sweetness and gratitude toward the human who got them out of that scary place. One of my favorite things on YouTube is videos of dogs being adopted and how absolutely thrilled they are. If you are thinking about getting a dog please consider a shelter dog. They will spend their lives repaying your kindness with love.
This isn’t new information. IIRC when he first explained the rationale for Dodger’s name he said he got a lot of flack from friends for calling him ‘Dodger’ in Red Sox country.
Such a special dog.
My goodness Dodger is so sweet!
Pics 3 & 4 show a dog with his beloved person. Resting his chin on Chris and cuddled up in #4.
I miss my dog, she was a beloved family member for 17 years.
When I see posts about Chris Evans, who is easy on the eyes, my first thought is
“Is Dodger with him? How’s Dodger doing?”
Actually, Henry Cavills’ dog a beautiful Akita named Kal, also gets my attention first. Then “Oh, yeah. Henry looks good too.” Cavill admits that he enjoys the fact that Kal takes all the attention from him when they are out together. 🙂
Dog person….tick
Looks and personality….second thoughts.
Emme, yes. He’s rolling back his infant girlfriend who looks like his daughter and bringing back his old standby, Dodger. Now that he’s no longer my favorite Chris, I vote that this site only does stories on Dodger, minus Chris. No more riding on your dog’s coattails, Chris!
