Critics on New Moon: ‘The cinematic equivalent of a Jonas Brothers concert’

20092_the_twilight_saga_new
You know that critics hate a movie when celebrity-friendly People magazine runs a negative review. The much-anticipated second film in the Twilight series, New Moon, opened to record-setting crowds at midnight yesterday. It’s sure to rake in a ton of money at the box office, but that doesn’t mean that non-fans will necessarily love it. Critics are saying it’s way too long at over two hours, too teen-focused and too dark. It’s probably loyal to the book, then, because Meyer’s New Moon really dragged in parts and was full of depressing naval-gazing. The film has an aggregate critics’ rating of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t abysmal, but isn’t that good either. Here’s what people are saying about it.

Though the battles between good and evil vampires and between vampires and wolves generate excitement, mostly Moon is a stilted, soapy supernatural romance. – People

The cinematic equivalent of a Jonas Brothers concert, The Twilight Saga: New Moon is slickly packaged entertainment that’s nonetheless predicated on a creepy vision of teenage sexuality that is desiccated of, well, sexuality. *Two out of five stars – Times Online

New Moon offers few of the juicy, go-for-broke romantic pleasures of its predecessor, and the movie is so badly shaped that it’s hard not to blame Weitz as a director. – Salon.com

If the first instalment of The Twilight Saga was a celebration of teenage sulkiness, then this sequel positively drowns in it. – Digital Spy

The film is a major let down from the first one, which I found to be intense and powerful. There was such great chemistry between the characters of Edward and Bella in Twilight and that, to me, was completely lacking in the sequel. – BDKReviews

In “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” the boys preen way more than the girls. Robert Pattinson’s Edward has the stylish wardrobe, the eyeliner, the rouge, the lip gloss and the perfect hair, while Taylor Lautner’s Jake spends most of his time whipping off his shirt in the rain so his abs can sparkle. At the screening I attended, dozens of teen girls squealed multiple times at the sight of Pattinson walking in slow motion, Lautner flexing his pecs. The only thing missing was a cameo by the Jonas Brothers. In the meantime, Kristen Stewart’s Bella is now 18, but she wears no discernible makeup, dresses like a 12-year-old boy and has two moods: pouting and sullen. No wonder 14-year-old girls love these books and movies. The female lead isn’t threatening, and the boys are studly and always fighting over her. – Richard Roeper

I love reading scathing reviews, and I could include more, but you can read them through Rotten Tomatoes if you like. The bottom line is that fans are going to go see this movie and that they’ll probably drag their moms, cousins, and friends along. I’m kind of iffy on it now that I’ve read these reviews and I might just wait for the DVD. This is part of my job and I write off all my movie tickets, but if the film is too long and lacks the appeal of the first one I’m likely to skip it. I have a short attention span and walked out of this year’s Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince because it seemed too boring.

Not that occasional decisions like mine will hurt ticket sales at all. This film will be a huge hit, and that’s why there’s absolutely no pressure on the Twilight filmmakers to put out a decent story. Director Chris Weitz seems to realize that he’s put out an inferior product for whatever reason. He told MovieMaker Magazine “Every time I make a movie I’m pretty much convinced it’s the last time I’m going to be able to do it and that really it’s a rather silly occupation to undertake.” Weitz seemed to be complaining about the final, unapproved edits to his film The Golden Compass, but he might have been talking about his more recent experience with New Moon. Filming guys taking their shirts off and swooning over a brooding girl might not be artistically rewarding, but it does earn a boatload of cash.

The thumbnail picture of the 4 men with their shirts off… is that from twilight?

Because to me, it looks like the cover of a really cheesy gay pr0n.

  2. snowball says:

Pattinson said (on the Today show, I believe) that he doesn’t get much face time in this one, it’s more Taylor and Kristen’s story (well, their characters’ and I can’t remember Taylor’s). He also said it was very faithful to the book, that the fans would have gone nuts if they’d deviated much.

  3. Brandy M says:

I thought it was much better then the book, even my husband enjoyed it!

  4. lucy2 says:

They’re going to have this problem with all of the sequels, I think, because the books themselves got progressively less interesting and increasingly ridiculous as they went on. The first book was pretty good, though I thought the movie was kind of flat, but after the first book I steadily lost interest.
I don’t doubt that the movies will continue to get bad reviews but also continue to rake in tons of cash.
I do think the review that talks about the female lead being non-threatening makes a very good point.
I found the character to be exceedingly wimpy, whiny, and needy.

  5. stacy says:

it sounds like these critics didnt even read the books. I’ll admit New Moon was my least favorite of the books but damn, these critics are harsh.

  6. M says:

Wasn’t this movie filmed this spring? Editing and post-production can ruin a film just as much as bad acting and direction. Having only six months or so to work on a film as big as New Moon is cutting it too thin imo.

But I love Roeper’s qoute about the 14 y.o. girls … it’s very true. It’s the same reason why women buy romance novels — same premise just with older characters.

  7. Jillian says:

I wouldn’t see this if they were giving tickets away for free. Anything that 13 yr old girls get so hyped up about is just not my kind of movie.

  8. ruru says:

Ebert’s review of this movie was hilarious.

  9. Roma says:

One reviewer talked about the chemistry being gone between Edward and Bella… maybe that’s because the actors were finally banging each other. Often, real life couples have zero chemistry on camera.

  10. Nebraska says:

Wasn’t the director of the first edition of the twilight series fired or something?

  11. Tia C says:

I’m with Jillian. I’ll definitely be skipping this teenfest. Saw the first Twilight and I thought it was BOR-ING!! I’d like to think I had better taste as a teen, too, but…probably not, lol.

  12. viper says:

or heres a novel idea: the audience grew up and are free of the unstable hormons that reduces them into humping craving machines and now have actual TASTE.

  13. Kolby says:

I cannot wait for the Pajiba review of this to be up. Scathing is probably too mild a word. Cannot wait.

  14. e says:

“The bottom line is that fans are going to go see this movie and that they’ll probably drag their moms, cousins, and friends along.”
Or maybe it is the moms dragging their kinds along? I am 31, I tried to read the books but the dialogue was SO BAD and I am a regular reader of romance novels so that is really saying something. That said, I cannot believe the adults I know who act like screaming teens over all things twilight…I think they might actually eclipse (HA!) the teens with their insanity.

  15. CrystalJ says:

I don’t think it’s the writers or directors fault that movies suck. The material is not steller the begin with (I’ve read all four), and then the writers and directors don’t have many liberties with the films. I think they could have made the dialog and action more intense and probably made the movie a lot better, maybe even, they would have cut out some of the moping and despression. Actually it, would probably have made both movies better. However, the aurthor is very hands on, and sometimes, there are just too many cooks in the kitchen.

My personal opinion, thats why there is a new director every film.

  16. wow says:

I liked the books enough that I will see the movies … just not on opening night with a bunch of hormonal teeny boppers screaming and squealing.

  17. fizXgirl314 says:

Well I really do hope this movie doesn’t do well… They had a female director who they fired because she was basically a “bitch” by their account… yet many assholish men are directors, and nobody blinks an eye… I’m glad that the second movie got far worse reviews than the first…

  18. Eileen Yover says:

I think its hilarious they are reviewing and criticizing this movie like it was some major Oscar contender. Dude, its a teeny bopper movie….relax! Frankly I’d be weirded out if this content about teenage vampires and warewolves would be a huge hit with critics.

  19. Iggles says:

@ Roma: “One reviewer talked about the chemistry being gone between Edward and Bella… maybe that’s because the actors were finally banging each other. Often, real life couples have zero chemistry on camera.”

Only if the actors don’t have talent.

Sophia Bush and Chad Michael Murray from One Tree Hill dated for two years and then got married and they still had major chemistry! Heck, they been divorced for years and their character still had chemistry!

  20. fizXgirl314 says:

Actually, after watching the interview the authord did with Oprah, I started to have a little more respect for her… I think it’s kind of a cool story that she had one dream and then spawned like 6 or 7 books and major movie deals from it… if only I took my corny dreams so seriosuly lol…

Although, I have been really disillusioned by how deceitful people really are so I’m not sure she’s making that story up just to garner some sympathy…

I am starting to resent people saying they don’t tan when they are clearly an inhuman shade of orange, they don’t have botox when they can’t even move their face, they don’t have lip implants when their face is all busted and they haven’t gotten lipo when you can see the fresh lipo scars… I mean seriously, do people take us for idiots???? It kinda pisses me off :/

  21. lucy2 says:

“One reviewer talked about the chemistry being gone between Edward and Bella… maybe that’s because the actors were finally banging each other. Often, real life couples have zero chemistry on camera.”

I believe that is the Joey Tribbiani theory of on screen chemistry… 😀

  22. Squirtle says:

I’m a big fan of the books; I don’t see why so many people are criticizing them. It’s not like they are trying become these deep philosophical films; it’s just a cheesy romance flick, that doesn’t mean it’s not a good story, it just is a different type of film. I pretty much knew what I was getting into for the first film, so I didn’t go in expecting an Oscar nominee…I heard the second film is better and has much more action so I’m dragging my boyfriend along with me tomorrow! Haha

  23. Praise St. Angie! says:

ya know, I don’t feel one way or the other really about the whole “twilight” craze.

it’s not my taste, but then I read/watch things that make others go “HUH?”

however, I will say this about the trailers that I’ve seen. The CG is SO obvious and over the top. I realize that a movie like this needs special effects, but the CG in Jurassic Park (STILL!) looks better and more believable than what I’ve seen in the trailers. and that was made in 1993!

  24. princess pea says:

Wait, isn’t “the cinematic equivalent of a Jonas Brother concert” Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience ?

  25. Meh says:

@fizXgirl314, it’s only 4 books and I’ve read them all. I will see the movie at some point but definitely not in the opening week. Roeper’s review talks about Jacob’s abs sparkling, what? Werewolves don’t sparkle. heh.
People are taking this too seriously, these are not world class actors nor is this great material.
I believe they choose a different director for each movie because each story is completely different. If they stay true to the books, those who enjoy the books will love the movies and those who thinks it’s crap will continue to think so.
No one will be converted either way.

  26. ~M says:

Whatever. This movie will make more than Noriega because of tween cutters and 30-year old chicks with undead fetishes, so no amount to critical backlash will stop that. This movie could be called Madea Goes To Registered 5ex Offender Class and as long as Robert Pattinson has a scene where he pouts and cries, the producers will need dragons and Hannibal’s elephants to carry all the money this crap is gonna make.

  27. Moore says:

I took my little sister to see it last night/this morning. While it wasn’t worth an oscar, it really wasn’t that bad. Better than the first, I think, though the special effects could have been better and the other director did a better job.

  28. irishserra says:

It’s not the most sophisticated series in the world, but it’s not terrible. The books were mildly amusing and while the “Twilight” movie was cheesy, it did stay pretty true to the feel of the book.

I just got back from seeing “New Moon” and it is a better movie than the first; however, it is slow and drawn out through much of it.

I’ve seen worse movies. I’ve seen better movies.

  29. GatsbyGal says:

It’s not the director’s fault OR the actor’s fault, really. It’s Stephenie Meyer’s. Give the greatest sculptor a bucket full of poop, and there’s really only so much he’d be able to do with it…and at the end of the day, it’s still shit.

  30. Jennipurrr says:

I went last night. I like the books, they are great escapist material. The movies are not quite as good… though the thing that bothers me the most about them is the deviation from details in the books. Pattinson had that right on the money.

I enjoyed it for what it is. Sometimes people need the escapist fantasy stuff because the world is so ugly. I find these stories very easy to get lost in.

We were talking about it last night after the movie and we discussed the fact that Steven King said she’s a terrible writer. I wouldn’t go that far. I don’t think she’s a literary genius, but I think she’s a great story teller with a lot of imagination. I got hooked right from the beginning, and I’m 32. No undead fetish, though, sorry.

  31. Anj says:

The Movie was worse comedy than Twilight.

But all Twihards will still be drooling over seeing the three monkeys (kirsten and other 2 ugly guys)

i just wonder the emergency rate of psycho Twihards who drooled and fainted in theaters.:|

  32. SageAdvice says:

I’ll say now that I’m 23 years old and I went to watch this at midnight (after watching Twilight for 5 dollars in the same theater at 9pm).

The reason why I like going to see movies like this is because of the audience reactions. There were about 20 teenage girls in my audience and the rest were clearly college students and above (I live in a college town, so it makes sense) and we were all laughing and having a good time.

The theater had a raffle and gave out hats and pins and things and people talked throughout Twilight and sang and giggled and it was just a fun experience, like going to see Rocky Horror or something.

The films aren’t that great, but neither is the source material and really, they aren’t supposed to be Oscar winning films. They are supposed to be cheese-tastic romance books/films for tweens. That’s all. And for what they are, they do a great job at it.

Personally, I am going to see it again tonight and dragging my 21 year old sister so we can giggle and squee at hot boys running around with their shirts off and I see nothing wrong with that.

  33. Legend says:

It’s a tween movie, not “Gone With the Wind”. I haven’t seen it, but it probably holds up pretty well compared to the tween crap from my childhood. (I decline to name any, but there were indeed moving pictures at that time ;)).

  34. Ana says:

I saw the first one…thought it sucked. The acting was horrible the CGI laughable. Sparkles taking Bella up the mountain–hilarious.

Heard this one wasn’t much better but will probably watch it anyway.

I really wished they had cast a prettier Bella. I agree with the no makeup, dressing like a young boy and not being threatening. I guess it’s smart because other not pretty girls can believe that Edward could’ve been theirs as well.

This is the ONLY case so far I have found where the movie could have been better than the books. Everything went wrong.

I still haven’t read the other two books. But I am planning on it…in Spanish becuase I’m trying to learn it and the books are on a 6th grade level.

  35. Cat says:

I saw it too, but thought it was awful! I wanted to slap the three main characters and tell them life’s tough, suck it up 🙂
PS. Plus the dialogue (or lack thereof) is killer! It’s almost all one line then silence, or cheesy awkward jokes. I wanted it to be over long before it was.
I was disappointed; I loved the first one and this one was supposed to be soooo much better! Not for me though.

  36. Em says:

I saw it today. I liked it. The only two things I found annoying were Roberts lipstick and Kristens screaming. Taylor was hot as hell though 🙂

  37. Lia says:

Who, exactly, are they trying to insult here? Being compared to a Jonas concert OR the Twilight movies is equally embarassing and insulting.

  38. kimberly says:

yes new moon may not be the best book of the series. I like #4, but more important then anything else is the fact that we don’t have to hear shit about hannah montana or the jonas brothers!!!!

    I will celebrate that!!!

  39. JaneLane says:

Part of the profits from this $hitfest movie go towards the Mormon Church. The same one that helped ban gay marriage. But do people care? Of course not. This world makes me sick.

  40. lin234 says:

Meh, Stephanie earned her fortune fair and square. What she does with it is at her own discretion and I don’t see why people should care. If people want to get self righteous about it then it’s better that she give her money to a church (even if it is Mormon) rather than blowing it on drugs, prostitutes, etc.

When I first saw Twilight, it was mainly curiosity regarding all the hoopla around it. I found it really cheesy but sweet. Afterwords, I was in Target and was curious about the books since they generally are better than the movie. I was sucked into reading all four within a week.

After reading the book, I thought that the casting for Rosalie and Alice was quite off. Rosalie is supposed to be drop dead gorgeous but the actress for her just looks really bad as a blond and I just imagined Alice to be a lot more dainty and petite. I didn’t care much about the casting for Emmet and Jasper either. But I think the rest of the cast was well placed. I think Kristen is pretty without being overtly so which is just as the book describes her. The movies aren’t going to be Oscar contenders. It’s all in good fun. I’m going to wait another week or so before I see New Moon so (hopefully by then) I won’t have to hear any screaming.

  41. Emily says:

My god, I would have to be paid a lifetime’s supply of alcohol to watch this thing. And I’d have to consume half of the during the movie. I just don’t get the hype around it, did the current generation of teens get free lobotomies at birth or something?

  42. CB Rawks says:

Does that girl’s mouth actually close? Mouth breather.

  43. Monica says:

I just saw New Moon and man…it’s easily the most ridiculous thing I’ve seen in years. I have read the books too, mainly because I wanted to see for myself just how bad the whole “saga” was. And I gotta give it to Stephen King – the guy was totally right, S. Meyer can’t write. The whole series is obviously her way of dealing with long years of pent-up frustration (vainly) spent waiting for a really hot guy to come sweep her off her feet.

What really troubles me is that she painted Bella as a weak, stubborn idiot who spends her time being trampled by men, grieving for men, being emotionally abused by men or else forgetting how to breathe (!!) at the sight of…you guessed it…men (and I really don’t care if they sparkle, they’re still men to me). How can such a weak heroine appeal to modern, independent women? I mean really… And in the movie, she’s just as bad as in the books…teary-eyed, sulky and with a bad case of the night sweats. Pathetic, really…

  44. Jojo says:

“No wonder 14-year-old girls love these books and movies. The female lead isn’t threatening, and the boys are studly and always fighting over her.”

    I agree with this

  45. MooMoo says:

I liked it too. I laughed at it and cringed plenty because it did feel like a mills & boon novel or something.. like when Jake whips off his shirt to dab Bella’s forehead – HAHA!

Actually, I remember feeling annoyance thinking that it could have been not ridiculous and then more people could enjoy it. Straight afterwards I started reading Eclipse, Twilight is now becoming my dirty little secret. Although I know how much it sucks, I still love it!

    I wish they’d make a grown up
version that didn’t say things like, “Promise me you won’t do anything… …. … ..RECKLESS”.

“Jake, I know what you’re thinking. My new obsession with bikes is RECKLESS”

‘Wow, going on this motorcycle with a strange man would be so RECKLESS’

Oh and the night terrors are fucking amazing! i love it!

  46. Gail says:

    WAY too much Cheeze!!

This movie will make money because of high expectations not because it was good.

Alice’s vision of Edward and Bella running through the medow with chino’s on was just the final straw for me.
    I literally canned myself.

The movie was made as if it were a super long trailor with all the best bits squished together, with no real connection to the caractors emotions.

The soundtrack had no synagy with the movie… and bella’s relationship with Jacob was unbelievable because it was rushed.

I loved Twilight, but new moon really disappointed me. Very sad about this.
Please bring back the original director.
Weitz just couldnt capture the essence of the movie… there was no mood, and no emotion….

    Pity…
