Wednesday evening, Ron DeSantis tried to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination for president. DeSantis tried to make the announcement on… Twitter. As opposed to, you know, making a speech in Florida with supporters, or even renting out some VFW hall and hanging “We Hate Woke Disney” posters all around. No, DeSantis tried to bring Elon Musk into his bullsh-t and Musk was happy to be co-opted. The problem is that the Twitter Space kept crashing and it was marred by dozens of technical difficulties. Somewhere deep inside the Mar-a-Lago compound, Donald Trump guzzled ten cheeseburgers and prepared his next diss track against Meatball Ron.
The start of a much-anticipated Twitter event in which Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis planned to announce his 2024 Republican presidential bid was repeatedly disrupted Wednesday when Twitter’s servers apparently could not handle the surge in traffic.
The app crashed repeatedly as Twitter users tried to listen to the event where Twitter owner Elon Musk joined DeSantis for the announcement.
DeSantis eventually was able to speak, about 20 minutes after the scheduled start, after Musk closed the initial Twitter Spaces event and started a second one on the app. That space attracted about 161,000 users, according to Twitter’s public-facing data, as DeSantis read a short speech.
“I am running for president of the United States to lead our great American comeback,” DeSantis said.
The audio-only event, which ultimately lasted over an hour, featured a string of known conservative media figures and operatives praising DeSantis and then posing questions aimed at many of the candidate’s favorite talking points.
DeSantis’ entrance into the race immediately sets up a direct confrontation with former President Donald Trump, who since announcing a third bid for the White House in November has regained his status as the leader of the modern Republican Party. Voices early in the Twitter Spaces event were openly concerned Trump would take advantage of the early glitches, a notable admission because the event was set up by DeSantis supporters.’
“This is going to be a stain that Trump is going to leverage for at least a few weeks,” one person could be heard saying amid the event’s early glitches.
Apparently, Musk and DeSantis claim that as many as 600K people tried to join the Twitter Space and that’s why it crashed, except – as CNBC noted – the data indicates that only 161K people were on. It’s also kind of ridiculous because, given the “importance” of the event, you would think that the DeSantis campaign AND Twitter would ensure that everyone was set up for a large number of people. Instead, even curious gawkers, political operatives and journalists found it difficult to stay on the Space without it crashing. Oh well! “DeSaster” started trending and everyone is dunking on Meatball Ron and his pudding fingers.

YEAH SO DESANTIS TRIED ANNOUNCING HIS CAMPAIGN ON TWITTER SPACES BUT IT WAS A TOTAL DISASTER WITH DAVID SACKS RAMBLING ABOUT DOGECOIN AND IT CRASHED LIKE 5 TIMES—NOW TRUMP JUST DROPPED A PARODY OF IT WITH AN AI VERSION OF ADOLF HITLER AND DICK CHENEY pic.twitter.com/iwrIzmKYgx

I’m loving DeSantis’ candidature for Donald Trump’s salty tantrums alone.
Big Orange is declaring full conspiracy theory war.
So a social media app meant to host millions in order to follow events in real time without interruption has turned into a shit all that constantly crashes when 150k people try to listen to something.
Brilliantly done Elon. You took “if it ain’t broke” and broke it.
One less oppressed voice amplifying social media platform.
A$$hole.
The rural MAGAs tend not to have broadband, Ron.
And audio only generates no footage to play over and over on cable.
I hope and pray that Trump and DeSantis don’t end up combining their evil forces. I cannot bear the thought of their insanity. Or the thought of them eating together at state dinners. That image is the new Ozempic.
Trust me. This will be total war before they’re finished.
They won’t. Their egos are too big.
If they do, it will be because DeSantis is the Horcrux that Trump made by accident.
Felicity Fox, this made me laugh out loud.
He’s going to lead “the great American comeback” and he can’t even do an announcement that he’s running for president. Then Mickey Mouse laughed at him. Nice try, Ron.
I read some conspiracy theory yesterday that DeSaster is a Deep State plant to thwart Trump. If the Deep State wanted to thwart Trump they would chose someone who is actually electable.
Don’t underestimate DeSaster in this day and age. He’s been elected governor of Florida. Twice. And Trump was (sort of) elected president once. Remember we have to overcome the electoral college.
I share Brassy Rebel’s concern. DeSaster has little charisma, but he’s been around a while and he’s not dead in the water. And Agent Orange is a weaker, but still strong enough at the moment, version of himself. The people who vote for them do have a huge electoral college advantage and looking at what’s happened to Republicans the past few years is seriously frightening. You can’t underestimate them, because someone in that party wants one or the other to be (a fascist overlord) president.
He really is so terrible at politics–astoundingly so. Trump is an abhorrent piece of shit but he knows how to shmooze, he knows who’s ass to kiss, and he makes his insane supporters laugh. They like him so much more than this jabroni. DeSantis’s only hope is MAGAts throwing their support to him *only* because they feel Trump is too polarizing. Otherwise, he’s f*cked.
Unlike Trump, DeSaster has a record of “accomplishments” to run on and it is positively horrific. Republicans in the Florida state house are so extreme they are forcing through legislation that makes DeSaster appealing to no one but Trump’s base and they are all voting for Trump.
Nothing good ever came from Twitter spaces.
That’s unfortunately not true.
Ukraine was able to counter Russian propaganda being backed by the media in multiple countries with Twitter.
That couldn’t be allowed to happen again so they had to get rid of it.
I know you are being obtuse, but honestly, I’ve seen some great Educational PDs on Twitter Spaces. It’s a great tool when used appropriately. If I had more guts I would use it for some ideas I have about a podcast but I don’t so I won’t.
Do it, @Imara! Speak out and crash Twitter!
Seriously tho. The world needs your voice. Do your podcast!
“renting out some VFW hall”
I took nothing else from this article. The flashbacks I just had about birthday parties and baby showers at my hometown Elk’s Lodge, my god. LMAAAO
Am loving the jokes and memes, esp the Disney ones. Twitter has convinced me it was the Mouse that did it – i guess he chewed the cables a little.
Every little event that helps to derail Ron D. in his run for POTUS is a good thing.
There were actually rumors of him doing a launch event from his hometown of Dunedin. And even some political talking heads said he should have done something traditional with his cute kids and his wife by his side. But since he despises mainstream media and we all know how awkward and weird he is in public settings, his hubris thought this was a good idea. I will never underestimate his cruelty or that he got elected 2x as governor of Florida (even bigger numbers the second time), but this presidential campaign thing isn’t going so well for him either. And I am loving it for him! With him and his wifey manager running the show and being difficult to work with, expect more of this, not less.
He has the worst instincts. I could see how Elon could play to his ego even though his broken app couldn’t work properly. And supposedly, Twitter’s remaining employees did no preparation for the event (lol).
Lots of old folks live in Florida. Old folks don’t like change. They want the world to be like it was when they were young. Republicans claim they can make that happen. They can’t but those people believe them anyway. That is how Ron got re-elected.
Everyone talks about Disney’s lawyers, but watch out for their programmers (hackers)!
These guys are hilarious. “The Great American Comeback”….from what.
Doesn’t bode well for Tucker who says he’s bringing his show to Twitter.
Ya gotta love it!
(wonder how much his campaign paid Elon for this disaster)
The amazing thing is that Musk and his sycophants and claiming victory and declaring that this is ushering in a whole new world for political discourse. We’re at a point where Musk’s rocket blows up and it’s a triumph and where his platform crashes repeatedly and it’s evidence of his genius.
These cults of personality are really terrifying.
I just watched part of it on Meidastouch and burst out laughing! The best part was Biden trolling him with an announcement on his social media with a link to donate to his and Kamala Harris’s 2024 campaign and at the top of the page was this:
THIS LINK WORKS
This was a great news morning!
The irony of these idiots doing what I assume is “trying to appeal to the younger people” (Twitter LOL) while simultaneously stripping away their education, healthcare, and bodily autonomy is mind-boggling. So it’s hilarious to watch it fall flat.
Love that our options going into 2024 are Biden (corporate democrat) and two Nazis. Really looking forward to this disaster as women lose rights and the backlash against LGBT+ heats up.
Not lecturing you because I’m sure you know this but…. I dislike Biden strongly but he is the only choice here. It f*cking sucks that he’s who the party has chosen but we cannot afford to not vote or worse yet, to vote for evil. Really looking forward to the day that Dems nominate someone who is actually going to fight for massive change. Doubt I’ll see that in my lifetime, sadly 🙁
Spot on Veronica especially at a time when real Americans need good leadership
Is it true or not that there has been issued a travel advisory in Florida for minorities or have I imagined this?
@julia8524 – Yes, the NCAAP issued a warning about traveling to Florida, saying it is “openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals.”
I wonder if Trump will feel the need to rub him out. I know trump’s dil already threatened him. Good times to come.
