Screaming tweens are ripping off the lifesize Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson promotional cutouts from Burger Kings around the US. TMZ reports that BK outlets have to keep replacing the posters after they’ve been stolen by girls in broad daylight:
There’s a “Twilight” crime wave sweeping the nation — particularly at Burger King restaurants — and all the suspects seem to be the most fearless creatures on the planet … teenage girls with a crush.
TMZ has learned multiple Burger King restaurants across the country are reporting life-size promotional posters of Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson are being ripped right off the BK windows in broad daylight … horrible time for a vampire.
So far, the interstate theft has affected BKs in Maine, Delaware and Montana. One Burger King rep tell us, “The girls just walk up in the middle of the day … rip off the posters and run … we’ve had to replace them over and over.”

I finally saw New Moon this weekend, and while it was cheesy as hell and definitely geared to young girls it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. The melodrama was laid on with a trowel and the first half of the film dragged, but once the action picked up it was pretty fun. The film was true to the book and really took the material into flat soap opera territority. They could have made it a more intelligent and less centered on Bella’s one-dimensional lovelorn angst.
It seems fitting that New Moon is doing a cross-promotional effort with Burger King. It’s like they’re not even trying to protect the Twilight brand and are going for a mass marketing blitz over even a smidgen of exclusivity. There are “Team Edward” and “Team Jacob” value meals, BK crowns and water bottles for God’s sake. Oh – and in one scene in New Moon, outside a movie theater, a Burger King bag was visible in several shots. I’m surprised the characters didn’t go out for Burger King and pose with the sexy plastic-faced BK guy. Maybe Burger King will cater Bella’s wedding in the next installment. The vampires will all moan that it’s too bad they can’t eat human food and enjoy a burger packed with cheese, bacon and fire-grilled taste achieved with flavored chemicals from New Jersey. (I got that from Fast Food Nation. I still enjoy a burger now and then from McDonalds or BK.)
New Moon was finally toppled from the top of the box office in its third weekend. Sandra Bullock’s The Blind Side has also been out for three weekend, but did a little better than New Moon this weekend to reach number 1 with a $20 million take to New Moon’s $15 million. E! Online reports that New Moon will probably make a whopping $600 million worldwide. Box Office Mojo has the current take at around $500 million.
The fourth book in the Twilight series, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn will be most likely split into two films for maximum profitability. The films are being shot back to back with a new director, Spanish horror filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona. Maybe he’ll add some legitimacy to the series. Not that it will affect the very fat bottom line at all.
Update: Eclipse has already been shot and has been directed by David Slade. It will be out in June, 2010. (Thanks guys for setting me straight!)

Eclipse has been filmed and will be released June 30th 2010. It’s Breaking Dawn, the fourth book, that will be potentially split!

Hasn’t Eclipse been shot and Breaking Dawn is going to be two films?
i dont get the big deal about this whole Twilight thing..I read the books and they were good. But people are going crazy! And its not just the teens, its older women too! I literally seen two GROWN WOMEN Fight over a freak Twilight New Moon SHIRT at Hot Topic. Its sad to watch
I thought Eclipse director is David Slade?
My Twihard pass has been revoked. I actually read these books and am still screwing up the 3rd and 4th installments. I will update this, thank you!
I went to New Moon with my 2 best gays just for the boy-watching. That would’ve been enough for me, but I was happy to find some other elements that were really good in there. There’s some pretty funny dialogue (I loved all the “Face Punch” stuff and the exchange between Bella and Jessica where the writers took some obvious glee in mocking “boy movies” in anticipation of the inevitable New Moon backlash) and also really solid acting. I haven’t read the books, but from what I hear, shit’s gonna start getting real dark. Can’t wait. As long as wolf-boys are ripping their shirts off at any given moment, I’m there. Call it a palate cleanser. I catch my share of art films and docs.
Whose picture is in the reflection in the header picture showing the Lautner BK poster? (The person taking the picture, obviously, curious as to who it is.)
@Lantana, that’s “ima girl” on Flickr:

Oh Twihards.
Is this better or worse than the Leo mania that happened after Titanic? I wasn’t a part of it so I can’t remember how bad it was exactly.
I knew there would be trouble when I first saw those things at a BK. They should not be surprised. They’re inviting crazed, quivering teens to come in an support their preferred character. Oh my.
The middle book of Breaking Dawn was horrifying, so I think it’s fitting that they chose a horror director for it. I don’t see a need for two movies, though. They’re just trying to wring it dry at this point, I think.
I looked at the ima girl site. Her photos are…different? It’s not like looking thru Grandma’s scrapbook. Some of them I really like, some I’m sort of “eh” (but I’m about 98% “eh” on my own photos, so she’s doing better than I).
Does anyone else realize that the staff from the 1st pic’s BK screwed up big time?
How long are Taylor’s arms supposed to be, 6 feet each?
I think the level of furor is about equal to Leo-mania in the late 90s, but it is spread out over two guys (Pattinson and Lautner) who are pretty different, both as real people and as the characters they portray. So while in Leo-mania there was just Leo (who rang a lot of girl’s bells, but not every girl) in Twilight there’s a little something for every girl (and gay).
Hmmm, that’s interesting…*lovingly strokes lifesize RPattz poster which may or may not have the BK logo on the back*
